Credits ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i) Basics ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Combat has 27 different types of fights built into it. There are several with tanks, bi-planes and jets. Each level lasts about two minutes and fifteen seconds. When time is running out the scores will flash on and off. The player with the most hits on the other player when time expires is declared the winner. Used the game select to choose the level and game start to play it. The Difficulty selector has a few effects in combat. When on mode A, shots will not travel as far as on mode B. Also, in jet games the jets will move slower for someone on mode A than on Mode B. Be aware of this as mode B has a substantial advantage to mode B. Also, this is a human vs. human game only, making it rather pointless with one player. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ii) Controls ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First, it is important to note the controls vary depending on the vehicle type a player is using. The most basic type of vehicle to control is a tank. The Atari 2600 Joystick has only a single button, for playing this game, the button should always be located in the upper left hand position. Now, tank controls: Left: Tank will turn left. Upper Left: Tank will move forward while gently turning left. If there are no barriers the tank will eventually do a 360. Up: Tank will move straight ahead in whatever direction the player is facing. Upper Right: Tank will move forward while gently turning right. If there are no barriers the tank will eventually do a 360. Right: Tank will turn right. Button: Tank will fire a shot. The next several game choices all involve the use of bi-planes. Bi-planes are the most difficult to maneuver as they are viewed from the side, rather than a top view as is the case with tanks and jets. There is one level in the game which uses a helicopter, its controls are exactly like the bi-plane. Left: Plane will head in its current direction at a very slow pace. Upper Left: Plane will slowly dive towards the bottom of the screen. Up: Plane will dive toward the bottom of the screen at a medium pace. Upper Right: Plane will quickly dive toward the bottom of the screen. Right: Plane will head in its current direction at a very quick pace. Lower Right: Plane will quickly climb towards the top of the screen. Down: Plane will climb towards the top of the screen at a medium pace. Lower Left: Plane will slowly climb towards the top of the screen. Button: Will shoot guns at enemies. The final type of vehicle is the jet. The levels jets can be used in are similar to those of bi-planes, but the controls are quite different. Left: Jet will turn left at a medium pace, it will eventually do a 360. Upper Left: Jet will quickly turn to the left doing very quick 360s. Up: Jet will go straight in its current direction at a very quick pace. Upper Right: Jet will quickly turn to the right doing very quick 360s. Right: Jet will turn right at a medium pace, it will eventually do a 360. Lower Right: Jet will slowly turn right which causes it to circle very slowly if maintained. Down: Jet will head in its current direction at a very slow pace. Lower Left: Jet will slowly turn left which causes it to circle very slowly if maintained. Button: Will fire missiles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iii) Types of Projectiles ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All three modes of play share some similar features. The most standard games allow for projectiles to be fired in the direction in which the vehicle was facing when it was fired. The distance depends on the earlier mentioned mode selection. Some levels allow for rapid fire of these straight shots, which will be referred to as machine guns. Just hold the button down to get the rapid firing effect. Some levels allow for guided shots to be fired. A guided shot starts off by going in the direction of which the vehicle was facing, but can be altered to go arcing to the left or right [and often both], by pushing left or right on the joy pad while the shot is moving toward a potential target. This type of shot takes a while to get used to, and is not available in very many levels, but is deadly once mastered. The final mode of projectiles is available only in tank levels. The shot will travel forward as always, but bounce off of a barrier/wall when it comes in contact with one. They shot will bounce exactly 90 degrees. Multiple bounces can take place, limited only by the distance range of the shot. Generally, with this mode of projectile the game forces a player to strike a wall before hitting the opponent, but a very few games allow for bounce hits or straight away hits to take place. Another cool aspect of tank games are the invisible tanks. While they really do not fall under the category of projectiles, I was uncertain of where they do belong. Tanks will stay invisible until they shoot, or run into a wall. Either of these conditions will make the tank visible for a brief moment. Bi-plane and jet games often allow for two, or even three planes to fly on the same team. They will always stay in formation, being right next to each other and fire their projectiles at the same time. Any of them are valid targets to hit and score points. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iv) The Levels ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With 27 different levels to choose from, a small section showing a player exactly what he or she is getting into before selecting it seems warranted. As such, I will list them in order of game number. Tank levels have three different layouts. The first is a wide open field, the second has a couple of barriers to avoid while the third has a lot of barriers to move around. Some of the bi-plane and jet levels have clouds. They do nothing if you hit them aside from momentarily hide the object flying through them. Make sure to be mashing the fire button if a close pass by occurs after a point, you may well get another. - When a tank is hit, it will be pushed a ways away facing in a random direction. This can be a good way to get several quick hits on an opponent, but be careful not to shoot him/her through a wall, or you will need to move all the way across the map go get them! - Bouncing shot is a lot of fun, it is a good idea to find nice bounce "patterns" to take advantage of in a game. - Remember, planes can go fast or slow, do not be afraid to "hit the brakes" to avoid getting creamed by enemy attacks. - If you are up in points on a straight shot tank game, do not be afraid to just hide behind a barrier and make your opponent come to you. It may be cheap, though it works. - Likewise, with guided shots, practice shooting "around" walls to hit an opponent trying to camp out and ambush you. - When playing with invisible tanks, it is often not a bad idea to fire once to see where you are, if uncertain. However, this will give your position away so use it sparingly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- vi) Disclaimer ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 2004, Apathetic Aardvark All rights reserved.
