Mind you, I have only played the multi-player mode with limited time on the single player mission. The multi-player mode, especially with 4 players, is probably the best aspect of the game. This is the perfect party game. Anyway, on with the guide... =====/\========================================/\===== ][ ][ [] [0400] WEAPONS SYSTEM [] ][ ][ =====\/========================================\/===== The weapon system is fairly easy to use. In order to acquire a weapon, just drive through one of the floating boxes that are placed around the track. If you are playing in chaos mode, there will be four boxes lying across the road, picking up one will cause the other three to jump up slightly, just out of reach of any cars that go past the same area behind you. Once you have picked up an item, the name of the weapon will appear on screen briefly to let you know what you've got. To use it, just hit R1. For machine gun, flames and oil slick, press and hold R1 to continuously use it, for everything else, just hit R1 once per shot. =====/\========================================/\===== ][ ][ [] [0500] WEAPONS LIST [] ][ ][ =====\/========================================\/===== Besides shotgun and machine gun, all other weapons can affect every car, that includes your own. Technically, mortars cannot hurt you because you are shooting forward, but anything is possible. First off, let me explain this section: [Colour] Colour of the icon on the track. [What does it do] What damages does the weapon do, and to how many opponents. [Range] Short - you are literally bumper to bumper with the other cars. Mid - you are about half the screen away from other cars. Long - you are about one screen away from other cars. Not applicable - the weapon is not affected by range. [When it should be used] Obviously weapons don't shoot in all directions, so this tells you when you should use the weapon. In front - you should use this weapon when you are in front of other cars. Behind - you should use this weapon when you are behind other cars. Side - you should use this weapon when you are side by side with other cars. Anytime - Use it whenever you feel like it. [How to activate] Some weapons require aiming, most don't. This section tells you which one is which. [Usefulness] It's my opinion on how useful the weapon is. Here we go: ==================== [0501] Barrel Drum ==================== [Colour] Dark Green [What does it do] Explosion that can deal damage to one or more cars [Range] Mid [When it should be used] In front [How to activate] No aiming required. Press R1 to release. [Usefulness] Depending on your track position, this is one of the most useful weapons in the game. It works most effective when you're on a straight, in front of at least one enemy. One direct hit from the drum and it's bye-bye to your opponent. Not to mention that you have not one, but two drums that you can drop. Because the blast affects an area, rather than a specific target, you can deal damage to more than one car should they come into your blast area when the drums go off. Rating: 8 /10 ==================== [0502] Flamer ==================== [Colour] Orange [What does it do] Shoots out flames from behind the car and cause damage to one or more cars [Range] Short to Long [When it should be used] In front [How to activate] No aiming required. Press R1 to flame. [Usefulness] Apparently, extremely useful. The affected car slows down dramatically if it comes into contact with the flames, not the mention that their bonnet is on fire, which is pretty cool to look at. For short range attack, it toasts the other car. Unfortunately, it does not destroy the car. So it can still be on the track, albeit burnt. For long range attack, it's pretty much bye-bye to your opponent since the flame slows the car down so much that it would not have enough time to recover. Rating: 9 / 10 ==================== [0503] Flash ==================== [Colour] Light Green [What does it do] Cause screen to white out for 2 seconds [Range] Not Applicable [When it should be used] Anytime [How to activate] Press R1 to release. [Usefulness] The flash, I think, only works on human players. It could be an annoying weapon if it is used right. Basically, the screen will white out for about two seconds, but that's enough for cars to fall off the cliff. This will affect everyone, so it could backfire pretty badly on the user. Worst of all, if more than one player set off the flash one after another, there's virtually no chance of survival. For best results, use while not on a straight. Rating: 7 / 10 ==================== [0504] Machine Gun ==================== [Colour] Yellow [What does it do] Cause one opponent to veer uncontrollably [Range] Short to Mid [When it should be used] Behind [How to activate] Aim and Fire. The target line will turn red once target is locked on. Hit R1 to shoot. [Usefulness] The machine gun is actually quite useful if you're behind other cars. The car will veer uncontrollably as long as you fire at it. If another car come into the target line, it will become the target. Because the car will veer left and right during your machine gun rampage, it is very easy to fly off the edge of the road. Unfortunately you can only target one car at a time. Rating: 7 / 10 ==================== [0505] Mines ==================== [Colour] Red [What does it do] Any cars that go over the mine will explode [Range] Not Applicable [When it should be used] Anytime [How to activate] Press R1 to plant the mine [Usefulness] You can lay two mines on the track. There is a time delay between the time you plant the mine and the time it goes live. The mine will turn from green to red, indicating that it is now active. Any players that are unfortunate enough to step onto one will more than likely see their cars out of the race. Along with Oil Slick, mines are not reset after a player wins a point, it will remain on the track for as long as the race is in progress, unless, of course, someone steps on it. And don't smile just yet if you are leading by a sizable margin, because you are on top of the screen, you cannot see what's in front of you. If there is a mine just ahead, you will not have time to avoid it. For best effect, plant the mines around corners or the middle of the track. Also, if you happened to be next to an opponent that steps onto a mine, there is a big chance that the mine will take out the both of you. Rating: 9 / 10 ==================== [0506] Missile ==================== [Colour] Pink [What does it do] Cause damage to one or more cars when hit [Range] Mid [When it should be used] Behind [How to activate] Aim and Fire. The beam turns green when locked on. [Usefulness] It is not that useful due to its relatively short range. But it is devastating if it manages to hit. It means certain death in most cases, as it will flip the car over. You have to lock on and fire, like the machine gun. You can fire it at short range (i.e. when there are cars right in front), but it is strongly discouraged. The missile can affect more than one car, if other cars are in close range of the target, and that includes you. You can use it once only. Rating: 5 / 10 ==================== [0507] Mortar ==================== [Colour] Light Blue [What does it do] Cause damage to one or more cars [Range] Mid [When it should be used] Behind [How to activate] No aiming required. Press R1 to fire. [Usefulness] It's basically a forward version of the barrel drums. The firing distance is about the same. You can fire four mortars before it runs out. The only down side is that they can be easily avoided just by braking. The mortar shells will fall harmlessly in front of them. Rating: 8 / 10 ==================== [0508] Oil Slick ==================== [Colour] Dark Blue [What does it do] Make the road slippery [Range] Not Applicable [When it should be used] Anytime [How to activate] Press R1 to drop oil on the track. [Usefulness] Not a very useful weapon. All it does is to cause the car to skid. I personally haven't killed anyone by dropping oil onto the track. Your opponents can recover from the skid too easily. Like the mines, the effect last for some time. For best effect, drop them around the corners. Rating: 2 / 10 ==================== [0509] Shotgun ==================== [Colour] Purple [What does it do] Cause one or more opponents to veer sideways momentarily [Range] Short [When it should be used] Side [How to activate] No aiming required. Press R1 to shoot. [Usefulness] The shotgun is not particularly useful. The range is really short. Your opponent needs to be literally right next to you for the shotgun to be fully effective. The best time to use it is when turning, if timed right, you can flip your opponent over. Also useful when your opponent is on the edge of the road. One blast of the shotgun will cause the car to lose control. Often, it will veer off the road. Rating: 5 / 10 ==================== [0510] Air Strike ==================== [What does it do] Cause damage to one car [Range] Any [When it should be used] When you're dead [How to activate] Aim and Fire. [Usefulness] Possibly the most powerful weapon. Unfortunately, it's only available when you're dead, and only if you have turned on the Air Strike option at the start of the race. It takes a while to lock on. When the square turns into a circle, hit the trigger. To avoid being locked on, you need some skilful driving. Once a missile is release, you can still avoid it, though it requires more skilful driving, swaying left and right. Because the missile comes from behind, it often does little damage to your car if you are on a long straight. However, if you are hit on an angle, you could be flipped. Multiple missiles, however, could flip you back upright again.
