This means that no combinations of dungeon maps that the game throws at you will ever be the same. You might have played the likes of Azure Dreams or Chocobo's Dungeon on the PSX; both of which are good examples of RPGs whose attractions lie with the random generated dungeons. In the latter's case, the gameplay is remarkably similar to that of Eternal Quest. There are no cutscenes, FMVs or even opening sequences to this game, nor are there villages to explore or a world map to make your way around. You begin the game directly on Floor 1 of the 50 floor dungeon. Every time you perish or use the Bell of Maria, you return to this floor to start from the beginning. Writing a level-by-level walkthrough is nigh on impossible with the random dungeon generator and the different floor layout each time you play, but I will try my best to help you cope with the mammoth 50 floors (or is it?) in the game. ==================================================================== S T O R Y [STY1] ==================================================================== In a world where a terrible war is taking place between Shogun Kagetora and Realm King Higul, demons and foul beings crop up at an alarming rate. You play as Gyokuro, a champion of champions ordered to defeat demons that are arising out an underground shrine beneath the village of Jinuma. ====================================================================== G E N E R A L A D V I C E [GA1] ====================================================================== Things to note: - You begin the game with the Bell of Maria (Bell M) and a Blade. The Bell M enables you to return to the first floor wherever you are in the dungeon; doing this will allow you to keep all the items that you may have found during your trek down. However, you level will reset back to 1. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: How does HP Regeneration work? ==================================================================== A: HP regenerates after taking a certain amount of steps or defending. After a battle or two, if you are wounded, walk around the area until your HP fully recovers before moving on to another room or unexplored area. It's worth the hassle if you don't want a blade stuck in your gut by a surprise enemy. :) -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: What are Jewels used for? ==================================================================== A: Jewels are special panels that are placed automatically in the local vicinity when you select the Jewel command on the menu. The green bar on the top right hand corner indicates how many jewels you have collected via killing monsters; the higher the bar, the more jewels that'll be placed on the screen when you select the command. What jewel panels do is damage the enemy whenever it steps on one. The damage done is 10HP per step/action. Note that even when enemies are hurt even when they're merely changing direction (to face you) so take advantage of that. Obviously, it would be best to select the command when the bar is full/near full and when there's a group of enemies waiting to ambush you. Activating Jewel when the bar is low will only place a measly one panel on the screen and that's just no good to you. -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Argh! I died and I lost everything I have! ==================================================================== A: If you ever die in the dungeon, you will be taken back to the first floor WITHOUT any of the items you found whilst you were down there. Make saves regularly! This will save you the heartache of losing any precious objects and weapons you find. Should you die, reset the game and load up your last save. -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: My weapons keep breaking! What can I do? ==================================================================== A: Weapons use up durability. When you run out of durability, the weapon will break. Although accessories don't use up durability, they are vulnerable to breaking, and some enemy attacks are specially focused on breaking your weapons, armour and accessories, so keep a watch out for those. These enemies usually have the word "break" in their names. If you find an item called Repair Book, you can restore your equipped weapon's durability to the max. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Ugh! It's so awkward trying to move diagonally! What can I do? ===================================================================== A: Yet another important factor left out of the dire manual; the R button is your best friend here. Press and hold onto R to move in diagonal directions. Also use this to select and target an enemy when you are surrounded; this also complements well with the Forked Weapons' diagonal strikes (see below). --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: A group of monsters are chasing me and I won't be able to hold them off! I don't want to use Bell's M. What else can I do? ===================================================================== A: If you see a group of enemies heading your way and you feel that you can't cope with a group attack, save your game and exit. When you reload the save, you will be placed in a brand new map. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: My inventory's already full. How should I go abouts deciding what's worth keeping or not? ===================================================================== A: You can hold a maximum of 24 items in your inventory. This pitiful amount of space means that you'll be discarding/throwing objects away a lot. Each item takes up one space, even the same items (with the exception being the dagger which has its own item count of 99). If you need to throw stuff away, be constructive; if there are enemies nearby, chuck worthless weapons (for example) at them so you can at least inflict some damage instead of simply discarding it on the ground. To deal with what one should keep or not, I recommend that you have at least a couple of Vampire Grass or Sweet Grass. Poison and Plague can be very annoying if you don't have the antidote at hand, and the latter can suck your HP like there's no tomorrow. Keeping several types of weapons is a good idea so you can switch between the types to deal with specific situations. If you plan to take advantage of Reverse Conditions, Reversed Weeds and Insane Monk's Notes are ideal as well as adverse effects items such as Snake Grass for when you want to use them. The items I don't recommend holding for any lengthy period of time are the stat builders such as Spheres (HP), Demon Crackers (+1 level), Resistance Oil (+1 Defence), Blood Wine (+1 Attack) and so on. There's no point in holding onto them if you're not going to take advantage of their bonuses. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: What the hell is up with the Snake Grass? Who in their right mind would want to poison themselves? ===================================================================== A: There are two useful things you can do with Snake Grass (and any other items that give you negative status ailments). 1. Throw these items at enemies as it's possible to inflict negative statuses on them. In the case of a Snake Grass, you can poison one enemy unit. 2. More useful in the long run, it can be used for Reversed Conditions. See sub-section "Reversed Conditions" under the category "Status Ailments" of this guide for more details. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==================================================================== A D V I C E : T A C K L I N G T H E D U N G E O N [TTD1] ==================================================================== - This one's an obvious one but nevertheless it's an important piece of advice - Kill every monster you come across. You will need all the experience points possible. - Some floors actually have 2 floors. You can take the lift down (represented by a circular icon on the ground) to another section of the same floor. Sometimes the exit is down here; sometimes it's not. In any case, try to visit every avenue and hunt down those bastards for experience and find items. - If you have a spear and there are two monsters chasing after you, try to lure them down a narrow corridor. This way, it'd give you much of a chance to hit both of them with one strike of the spear. - Reading the map; pay careful attention to the symbols shown on the map. Some floors have very awkward colour schemes (very dark, mixed colours) that may camouflage the objects, herbs and other items making it hard to spot them without a map. ==================================================================== A D V I C E : S T A T B O O S T I N G [SB1] ==================================================================== Spheres are probably the niftiest items in the game. Not only do you get to heal yourself, they also serve, if used correctly, by giving permanent HP boosts to your character. The requirement is simple: Use a sphere whenever Gyokuro is at full energy. Simple. For a standard Black Sphere, you get 2HP boost to your maximum HP. For a Large Black Sphere, you get 4HP. And since they are incredibly common items, it wouldn't be difficult to rack up your HP levels. This could easily be an overlooked aspect, seeing as the manual mentions nothing about this and common sense would normally dictate that you oughtn't use a restorative item when you don't need it. With the HP regeneration in place, doing this couldn't be any easier. It's best to start as soon as you can and it will most definitely help you cope with the heavy damage that later monsters can inflict on you. Raising HP stats up by traditional levelling up is slow and may give you a lot of trouble later on. NOTE: Dying or using Bell M will cause you to lose all the stat gains. ==================================================================== A D V I C E : E X P E R I E N C E [EE1] ==================================================================== There are a few monsters out there that give out a ton of experience points for thrashing them. All these monsters can crop up anytime during the game and aren't restricted to certain floors or whatever. Living Granite: --------------- You can identify these as mere rocks and are shown up in red on the map. Smack them one and these babies will rise up and begin hunting you down. Towards the beginning of the game, these can be heavy hitting and one should hurt them from a distance, otherwise they get the first attack in. I usually use my jewel power for these monsters and lure them onto each spot, depleting their HP without laying a finger. Later in the game, the experience isn't so great but in the early stages, beating them will give you a head start in the levelling up stakes. Heppil ------ Easiest. Monster. Ever. Put simply, you get a crap load of experience simply by beating the hell out of them. Heck, they start off by giving approximately 1500 experience points! Even monsters on the 40-49th floors don't give out this much. Heppils are also easy to hit, unlike the likes of cactuars from the Final Fantasy series. If you ever see a Heppil (they look like bulb insects), be sure to kill it. The experience gain is simply too good to miss out on. ==================================================================== W E A P O N T Y P E S [WT1] ==================================================================== The game adopts a grid like system in which you move at the same time as the enemy. You will need to be aware of the weapons as well as the positioning of yourself and the enemy to make the most of the situation. We'll go through it one step at a time. Besides the standard one hit blade, there are the following types: Thrust Weapons (Spear) +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- A spear is a thrusting weapon that has a long reach. With this, it is possible to attack multiple enemies at once. Looking at the picture below, you can see the possible range you can achieve with a thrusting weapon. With Gyokuro in the centre, he can hit in 8 different directions (vertically and diagonally) G = Gyokuro X = Enemy _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | X | | X | | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _| | | | | | X | X | X | _ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _ | | | | | | | X | X | G | X | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _| | | | | | X | X | X | _ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _ | | | | | | | X | | X | | X | |_ _ _| |_ _ _| |_ _ _| Forked Weapons +-+-+-+-+-+-+- Forked weapons can also achieve multiple attacks but in a different way to thrusting weapons. Where thrusting weapons can hurt enemies lined up in a straight vertical row to the player, forked weapons attack enemies lined up in a horizontal row in front of Gyokuru. As you can see from the picture, Gyokuro can attack in 8 position directions that can hit up to three enemy units at once. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | X | X | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _| | | | | | X | G | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _| | | | | | X | X | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _|_ _ _| To better illustrate the diagonal strikes: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | X | X | | X | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _| |_ _ _|_ _ _| | | | | | | | X | G | | G | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _| |_ _ _|_ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | X | G | | G | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _| |_ _ _|_ _ _| | | | | | | | X | X | | X | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _| |_ _ _|_ _ _| Hundred Weapons Hundred Weapons (Area Attack) have a wider sweep than any other weapon types. _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | X | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _| | | | | G | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _| | | | | X | X | |_ _ _|_ _ _| ----------------- Weapon Attributes ----------------- - Bloodsucker Sword - Contrary to what the name might suggest, the weapon does not grant you the power to drain monster HP and absorb it as your own. It's understandable to assume that most gamers wouldn't deliberately poison themselves or whatever, let alone drop your stats down drastically. However, with Eternal Quest, things run a little different to your other RPG titles; the game implements a system called the Reverse Condition. What this means is that when Reverse Condition takes place, the negative/positive status will be reversed. Here's a clear example of what is potentially foolish and turning it into something that's beneficial in the long run: * Eat a Doom Vine (Inflicts Doom status - Max HP drops 50%). Let's say you have 60HP; this will now drop to 30HP. * Use an Insane Monk Note or Reversed Weed (Reverse Condition). * HP level is now 90HP. Doom symbol is red to indicate condition reversed. As you can see, even if you pick up a seemingly useless item, don't be so hasty to throw it away. With the above example, the benefit is obvious and the great thing is it lasts for a very long time... well, until you die or eat a Vampire Grass. :( Note that the Reverse Condition can apply to multiple conditions simultaneously so you can turn a seemingly screwy situation and twist it to your advantage. Here is the list of status ailments again but with their Reverse Conditions effects replacing the original effects: Name (symbol) Effect Poison (Raindrop) HP gradually increases Plague (Slime) HP increases drastically Fire (Flame) Burns restore HP for set time Paralysis (Bolt) Faster movement Frost (Cube) Necromancy(Skull) Hesitant (Cup) Attack stat + 20% Illusion (Swirl) Insane (Face) Defence stat +20%; Attack stat -20% Charm (Holy cross) Can attack; Defence -100% Doom (Broken Heart)Max HP +50% REVERSE CONDITION ITEMS: Reversed Weed, Insane Monk's Note ========= - Curse - ========= Unlike the other statuses, this one isn't indicted by any symbol. When cursed, you won't be able to remove any equipment that you have equipped and/or replace them with anything else. However, with this in mind, the cursed weapon will not break even if the durability runs out. CURE: Uncurse Book ==================== - Ghost Possession - ==================== Certain monsters will try and possess you. If they do, your level will increase by 1. However, this also affects HP regeneration. If you aren't at full HP, HP regeneration whilst being possessed will reach, at best, 1HP below your max HP level. "Pfft, Is that it?!" you may ask, but combine this with the fact that you need full HP for the spheres to give out permanent HP max bonuses, it can be a pain to do so since you're always at most 1HP below maximum. One way you can tackle this is to use a sphere to recover all your HP, don't move and then follow up by using another sphere to gain the bonus. It is a waste of one sphere though, mind. The only way to get rid of this is to activate the Jewel command. = New Notes - Caution! = When you are on higher levels and the experience required for each level-up widens, you should especially be wary of what ghost possession can do. Let's use an example: Level 45 - Reach 230000 exp Level 46 - Reach 260000 exp Now, let's say you current experience is 250000 and you get possessed and the ghost raises your level to 46. Now, if you cure yourself of this status, you experience WILL drop down to approx. 230000. As you can see, the process has caused you to waste your hard earned 20000 experience points and you'll have to fight to raise that much again. It is entirely possible for you to be going through higher floors without levelling up due to the fact that you may have been possessed many times over and the experience points reset to the base of the previous level. It's easy for forget or ignore this so the point here is for you to be aware of such. You need as high and consistent a level as you possibly can without dilly-dallying around too much, and this is the biggest pitfall that you may unintentionally fall into. CURE: Activate Jewel command on the menu ====================================================================== F I N A L B O S S S T R A T E G I E S [FBS1] ====================================================================== It is entirely possible to win this fight without so much of a scratch. There are respawning enemies that'll appear, thankfully, only one at a time. The boss doesn't have a long-range attack whatsoever so use this as your advantage. The spear is the ideal weapon of choice for this battle. Move one step forward on your first turn; don't bother healing or faff around with stuff on that first turn, otherwise enemies will spawn right in front of your ideal positioning. After you make the first step, the boss will call up an enemy between you and it. With the spear, you can target and attack both the monster and boss. Keep doing this and you'll eventually come through. The monsters won't budge as long as you don't move yourself. Taking advantage of the Reverse Conditions will make your life a whole lot easier for a spear user and if you don't have a spear, there are precautions you could take to make things more manageable. Reversed Plague condition is a massive help here especially if you're low on spheres with regards to the rest of the stuff in your inventory. Doom and Hesitant Reversed are also ideal for maintaining your strength in the long run. Being able to kill off the minions in 1 or 2 turns is something you should be capable of dealing with consistently at this point of the game. Once you beat the hell out of it, enjoy the short mini ending sequence. The game isn't quite over yet as you will see. ====================================================================== T O I N F I N I T Y A N D B E Y O N D ! ! ! [TIB1] ====================================================================== Once you beat the final boss, you can continue the quest beyond level 50. You will get a new item on level 51 called a Bell S. What this does is allow you to travel between levels 1 to 99 anytime you want. However, there is a catch to this. Using this item to teleport to other levels means that you lose ALL the items in your inventory except for the 3 Bell items and your currently equipped stuff. Another thing to add is that even after you pass the 100 floor mark, using Bell S will still only allow you to teleport to floors 1-99, so basically it's a pretty worthless item really. Once you pass the floor 80 mark, you may find yourself facing monsters that have two moves per turn. As always, try not to get yourself surrounded or you will find yourself slaughtered in no time at all. Anyhoo, Have fun exploring a supposedly never-ending dungeon! ====================================================================== I T E M L I S T [IL1] ====================================================================== Each item in the game comes with its own description. The "break" monsters are immensely annoying seeing as their attacks can automatically break a weapon/armour/accessory without warning, regardless of durability. And since you cannot identify a particular monster unless you hit them or they hit you, it's a risky venture sometimes. My advice would be to try and smack them with a spear or throw a dagger from long distance, and then to pay attention to the information box for the name of the enemy. "Burn" Monsters --------------- Even though it doesn't last long, Burn sucks your HP like crazy. Couple this with the plague or poison effects and you could fall very quickly without warning. If you have less than half HP and you don't have a Fat Grass when a monster inflicts this on you, use a normal or large sphere to recover quickly. Stop attacking the monster and retreat if necessary. "Summon" Monsters ----------------- If a summon creature summons another summon creature alongside others, focus on killing the summon monsters before they have a chance to call for more help. Not quite a big a deal as Break or Burn monsters but being surrounded is still something you should be wary about when it comes to these types of monsters. Explosion --------- There is a chance that monsters explode upon defeating them. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing which monsters do or do not explode beforehand. You won't be hurt from explosions if you attack from long-range. However, this shouldn't worry you too much as it is uncommon for monsters to explode. There are also other nasties that they may leave behind instead: poison clouds/mist, Ice clouds and so on. As long as you don't step over these, everything will be just dandy. Auto-Resurrection ----------------- On the higher floors, there is a chance that the monsters you slaughter will resurrect. You can tell beforehand when this happens when a monster's corpse doesn't disappear from sight upon defeat. Two-for-one ----------- Covered in the "To Infinity and Beyond" section above, you may find yourself facing some foes that take two turns to your one. At this point in time, I do not know what directly influences this, whether it be level-based or the hidden enemy stats. ==================================================================== F I N A L W O R D S ==================================================================== I hope that you, the reader, found this guide and will continue to find its future updates helpful in conquering (or going as far as one may go) the game. It would be incredibly difficult to put in an equipment list seeing as the vast majority of them don't even have written names to begin with and are represented each by 3 symbols. Please refer to the manual in regards to what the symbols stand for.
