This forest will soon be lost due to the creation of a dam. The story goes that on the eve of a special ritual, this village suddenly vanished and its population disappeared. This ritual went horribly wrong, leaving the forest wreathed in a thick fog. Many also say that if you should happen to get lost in this forest, you will be spirited away to the village. The village where the Crimson Butterflies dance; the village held forever in the grip of a never-ending night... (Extracted from www.fatalframe2.com) Well that sums up the introduction of the game. This is the first time I'm writting a full guide, so please bear with me if I make any mistakes. The reason why I started this is to provide in-depth game information (story- related) and plot analysis for this one great game. Please note that this is NOT a game FAQ/Walkthrough, so please do not e-mail me asking for gameplay tips. You are welcomed to e-mail me if you find mistakes in my guide, or to futher discuss certain subjects or theory related to this guide. It would help if you included something related to Fatal Frame (may it be a header FF, or something similar) on the subject field of e-mails so that I would not confuse it with any spams that may appear on my Inbox. --> Shameless plug on the author. I'm a 21, Chinese male. Currently residing in South-East Asia. I am madly involved in gaming, anime and manga. My other interest are PCs and cars. Part-time student and part-time worker, I have still got a long ways to go in life. My spoken language is English, Cantonese, Hokkien and little Malay. I can understand Japanese and Mandarin, though I can't converse fluently in it. I can read English and most Hiragana/Katakana. Can't read Kanji sadly. <--------------------------> | Section 1 - Readme First | <--------------------------> OK this section is for me to explain exactly how this guide works. I had archieved first the stuff and information that you can obtain throughout the game, namely the Memo, Scraps and others section. This is because it is real important to go through those first since they provide ALOT of information. I will then start my in-depth game analysis and plot analysis after those section. Please note that all the sections belows contains spoiler, so it is really recommended that you finish Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly at least once before reading. And also, forgive me for any gramattical or information mistake that I might have done. I'm still new in writting, and I'm only human. It would be appreciated if you would point out the mistakes that I might have done by e-mail. <---------------------------------> | Section 2 - In-Game Information | <---------------------------------> This is a section to archieve in-game information that you can obtain throughout the game. I copied this directly from my last gameplay, and please note that I have yet to finish hard mode and there are missing notes that I missed along my first gameplay. I will continue adding the missing stuff once I get submission for it or when I obtain it on my second gameplay. All of this information can be accessed (once obtained) from the in-game Menu. I might add rantings near the bottom of individual field, just to add some notes or personal in-sight about the particular field. ################ # In-Game Memo # ################ [Lost Village] |Description :- A village and its inhabitants vanish during a ceremony. |Memo Content:- This village and all of its inhabitants vanished from a mountain forest during the night of a ceremony. Ever since then, the forest has been dark and shrouded in fog. The entire village disappeared completelt, leaving behind only a Twin Deity Statue. Even now, the spot where the village once stood is covered in thick fog, and whenever someone gets lost in the forest, people believe the village spirits them away. |Ranting :- This Memo is later replaced by All God's Village. [All God's Village] |Description :- Mio and Mayu wander into the lost village, "All God's Village". |Memo Content:- The place Mio and Mayu have wandered into is the lost village, "All God's Village". It vanished long ago on the night of the "Forbidden Ritual". The spot where the village once stood is covered in thick fog, and now only a Twin Deity Statue marks its location. A single young girl was left behind when the village vanished. Legend of this village are recorded in the writtings of a folklorist's assistant. This assistant was said to have come out of the village just before it disappeared. [Lost Couple] |Description :- Miyako enters the village seeking her missing boyfriend, Masumi. |Memo Content:- Masumi Makimura, a geological surveyor, went missing during an investigation of the forest that would be submerged once a local dam was built. Legend has it that people who get lost in this forest are spirited away by the lost village. Could that what happened to Masumi? Masumi's girlfriend, Miyako Sudo, believing him to be still alive somewhere in the forest, went in search of him. She, too, ended up wandering into the lost village. |Rantings :- This Memo is replaced with Miyako's End after a certain event. [Miyako's End] |Description :- Miyako is strangled by the spirit of her lost boyfriend, Masumi. |Memo Content:- Masumi and Miyako, who had come looking for him, finally ran into each other in the lost village. Together, tehy looked for a way out, but Miyako got hurt and had to be left in the Osaka House. Masumi went into the Kurosawa House looking for clues, but got killed by the "Kusabi" there. Miyako, waiting alone in the Osaka House for Masumi, was attacked by his dead spirit. All she could do was beg to known why as Masumi's ghost spirit began strangling her. [Trapped Boy] |Description :- The white-haired boy calls Mio "Yae" and tells her to leave. |Memo Content:- As Mio wandered around the village looking for the lost Mayu, she came across a white-haired boy locked up in a storehouse cell. From the small cell window, the boy called Mio "Yae", and urged her and Sae to get out of the village before the ceremony started. |Rantings :- This Memo is replaced with Itsuki in Chapter 8 after gaining access to the Storehouse. [Itsuki] |Description :- After helping Sae and Yae escape, Itsuki Tachibana commits suicide. |Memo Content:- Itsuki Tachibana, is "The Remaining". He was left behind by his twin after the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual the year before The Repentance. Itsuki loved his twin Mutsuki so much that the ritual ended up in failure, and a year later it was Yae and Sae's turn to perform the ritual. Itsuki, who made a pact with Mutsuki not to let the same thing happen to Yae and Sae, wrote a letter to his friend Ryozo, asking him to help after their escape. Keeping his promise to Mutsuki, Itsuki distracted the villagers. He was locked up in a cell and commited suicide. Sae was captured after Itsuki's death, and when she saw what had happened to him, she wept, saying "It's all our fault! We shouldn't have tried to escape!" [Hidden Ceremony] |Description :- The Hidden Ceremony performs a sacrifice to calm the Hellish Abyss. |Memo Content:- People sacrificed to calm the Hellish Abyss's rumblings temporarily until the next Crimson Sacrifice Ritual were called "Kusabi". The ceremony for sacrificing a Kusabi was the "Hidden Ceremony". Village outsiders were subjected to the Cutting Ritual then made into Kusabi. It was believed that the more pain the Kusabi was subjected to before sacrificed, the more effective it would be in appeasing the Hellish Abyss. The very first Kusabi, a ceremony master, performed the Cutting Ritual on himself, slashing and cutting his own body. Ever since then, the Cutting Ritual was part of the Kusabi tradition. Legend had it the villagers captured visitors to the village and forced them to be human sacrifices. This practice was probably the origin of the rumor that people who went near All God's Village got "spirited away". [Twin Doll] |Description :- Mr. Kiryu makes a doll that looks just like Azami to comfort Akane. |Memo Content:- Long before The Repentance, the twin Kiryu daughters had to perform the Crimson Sacrifice. To comfort Akane, The Remaining, her father created a doll just like the murdered twin, Azami. But when he discovered the doll had become possessed by Azami's spirit he vowed to destroy it. But Mr. Kiryu never managed to destroy the doll. In the end, his daughter Akane, controlled by the possessed doll, strangled and kill him. [Massacre] |Description :- A woman laughs maniacally in a sea of dead villager bodies. |Memo Content:- One theory about the lost village held that there was once a great massacre there. All the villagers were killed, and that's how the village came to vanish. A woman wearing a red sash, laughing maniacally in a bloody sea of corpses is the vision of Mio saw of the "massacre". On the day of the ceremony, Sae laughingly attacked and slaughtered the villagers gathered in the great hall. She then went out and began killing the rest of the willagers one by one... |Rantings :- This Memo is replaced with Sae Kurosawa after beating Hard mode. [Sae Kurosawa] |Description :- Even after becoming an evil spirit, Sae waits for her sister. |Memo Content:- The last of the Twin Shrine Maidens, Sae and her older sister Yae. They tried to run away from the village to escape their fate as twins, but Sae fell from the mountain path and was captured by the villagers. Sae firmly believed Yae would come back to save her, but Yae never returned. "She left me behind..." The villagers completed the ritual by their own hand. Sae, now in despair, was hung to death with a sacred rope and then thrown into the Hellish Abyss. But because the ceremony wasn't performed properly, the Hellish Abyss broke open, and The Repentance occurred. Reappearing from out of the Hellish Abyss, Sae slaughtered the entire village and then sat waiting in desolation for her older sister's return. [Twin Shrine Maidens] |Description :- The energy radiated when Twin Shrine Maidens become one seals the hell gate. |Memo Content:- In All God's Village, twins were born at certain regular intervals. The villagers believed that twins were a single person that split and got born as two. Twins were thought to radiate a great energy when they become one again. At times, boy twins also perform the ritual. These twins are called "Altar Twins". [Crimson Sacrifice] |Description :- The "Crimson Sacrifice Ritual" reseals the Hellish Abyss. |Memo Content:- The ritual performed to calm the rumbling of the Hellish Abyss was the "Crimson Sacrifice Ritual". In this ceremony, the older sister of Twin Shrine Maidens strangled her younger twin and became one with her again, and the energy thus produced resealed the Hellish Abyss. [The Repentance] |Description :- The Repentance, when the darkness spills from the Hellish Abyss |Memo Content:- When the seal on the Hellish Abyss was completely broken, darkness spilled out from its depths. This calamity was called "The Repentance". All God's Village was covered in this darkness from the Hellish Abyss and sealed there permanently. No one could escape its endless night... Some villagers were swallowed up by the Hellish Abyss's darkness and died in madness. Others commited suicide rather than face such hell. Sae and the Kusabi, returned from the Hellish Abyss, began slaughtering the survivors. They said Sae's maniacal laughter could be heard beyond the village... And that is how the village came to be deserted. From the outside, this village covered in darkness now only appears to be a forest shrouded in thick fog. But whenever there's an earthquake in the region, more darkness spills from the Heliish Abyss and spreads... [The Hellish Abyss] |Description :- The enormous pit at the Forbidden Ritual site, "the Hellish Abyss". |Memo Content:- The enormous pit at the site where the Forbidden Ritual was performed was called "the Hellish Abyss". The villagers believed it was the entrance to hell, and threw the Crimson Sacrifices into it to appease the darkness and keep it from spilling out and covering the village. In All God's Village, it was forbidden to approach this site or even to speak its name. In books, the name of this forbidden place was only written as "the X". Anyone who looked into the Hellish Abyss's darkness woudl die in madness. Those who performed the Hellish Abyss's rituals were called "The Mourners". Their eyes were sewn shut so they couldn't see. Anyone who tried to look into the Hellish Abyss was also called "The Mourners", and had their eyes sewn shut, too. [Crimson Butterfly] |Description :- The mark on the strangled twin's throat turns into a Crimson Butterfly. |Memo Content:- The crimson mark left by the two strangling hands of the older Twin Shrine Maiden on her younger sister's throat turned into a Crimson Butterfly after the ritual. The younger sister's body was thrown into the Hellish Abyss and her soul flew around the village in its new butterfly form. [A Passageway] |Description :- Only priests and the Mourners are allowed to enter this site. |Memo Content:- The cave that spread beneath All God's Village was called a passageway. It secreted a forbidden place at its deepest point. Only a few priests and special people called "The Mourners" were allowed to enter this site. [The Camera Obscura] |Description :- The camera Obscura created by Dr. Aso to capture supernatural phenomenon. |Memo Content:- The "Camera Obscura" is a special camera created by Dr. Aso to capture supernatural phenomenon that couldn't be seen with the naked eye. It was designed to photograph visions of the past and spirit entities, but it was a prototype and its functions hadn't been fully tested. Photographing "things that ordinary people couldn't see" with this camera had an exorcismal effect. Seijiro Makabe, a folklorist who had come to investigate All God's Village, borrowed this camera from Dr. Aso to photograph the village's rumored Forbidden Ritual. Dr. Kunihiko Aso was a folklorist who studied the spirit world. He modified the latest gadgets of his time, the camera, radio and projector, trying to create a machine that could capture supernatural phenomenon. He was shunned by the academic world but friends with Makabe. [Chitose Tachibana] |Description :- Chitose Tachibana hides in the closet. She thinks Mio is Yae. |Memo Content:- Chitose Tachibana was Itsuki and Mutsuki's younger sister. Deeply attached to her brothers. she hated Yae and Sae for getting Itsuki locked up when he helped them escape. She now thinks Mio is Yae, and attacks her. A delicate child, she always hid in the closet whenever outsiders came to the house to visit. When The Repentance came, she hid in the closet to get away from the darkness. Too afraid to come out, she witnessed the entire massacre from inside. Chitose died in the closet... [The Remaining] |Description :- The twin that kills her other half is called "The Remaining". |Memo Content:- The twin that killed her other self in the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual was called "The Remaining", and was feared and respected. Some of these The Remaining went insane with grief, and others had their hair turn white overnight. Many of them turned reclusive and shunned all human contact. Twin are known to share each other's pain. The Remaining bore a vestige on her own throat of the mark her sister received during the ritual. [One Girl] |Description :- Only one young girl escaped the village before it disappeared. |Memo Content:- They saw only one young girl escaped the lost village before it disappeared. That girl was Yae, the older sister of the last of the Twin Shrine Maidens. Yae loved Sae too much to perform the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, so she and Sae ran from the village on the day of the ritual. But Sae fell from the mountain path, and the two got seperated. Yae looked for Sae, but got lost in the mountain. When she got back, the village was gone. Ryozo Munakata found Yae crying where the village used to be. He had left the village once after getting a note from Makabe, but he came back on the day of the ceremony to fulfill his promise to Itsuki. He took care of Yae, who had lost her memory, and the two eventually got married. [Folklorist] |Description :- Seijiro Makabe, a folklorist who investigates local customs. |Memo Content:- Seijiro Makabe was a folklorist who traveled all over Japan investigating local customs. He borrowed the Camera Obscura from his friend Dr. Aso and set out to make an account of All God's Village's practice of raising twins as Shrine Maidens and its hell-gate ritual, the Forbidden Ritual. Makabe's goal was to clear up the old legends about the hell gate by taking photographs and conducting research on the village and its Forbidden Ritual. |Rantings :- This is replaced with Kusabi near the end of the game. [Kusabi] |Description :- All God's Village's custom is to use outsiders as human sacrifice. |Memo Content:- All God's Village's custom was to use outsiders as human sacrifices, or "Kusabi", to temporarily appease the Hellish Abyss. The villagers told Makabe they would show him the Hellish Abyss, but they captured him and locked him up instead. Before using the key from Yae and Sae, he was sacrificed. The village believed the more pain a Kusabi was subjected to before being sacrificed, the more effective it would be. After many painful rituals, Makabe was thrown into the Hellish Abyss. But, along with Sae, he appeared as a Kusabi on the day of The Repentance and slaughtered the villagers. Makabe gave Yae and Sae a note for his assistant Ryozo, telling him to get out of the village. Wondering why, Ryozo did so, but came back on the day of the ceremony to fulfill his promise with Itsuki. When he arrived, the village was gone and all he could find was a girl standing motionless. [Twin Order] |Description :- In All God's Village, the twin born first is considered younger. |Memo Content:- Nowadays, when twins are born, we think of the one born first as being the older brother or sister. But All God's Village thought the "superior", or "older", twin would let the "lesser", or "younger", twin born first. In the same way, throughout ancient Japan, the twin born first was considered to be younger brother or sister, and the one born second the older twin. But on December 13, 1874, an eldict proclaimed the one born first was the older twin. From that day, that became the accepted rule. [The Old Tree] |Description :- The Old Tree Site where The Remainings are enshrined when they die. |Memo Content:- The Old Tree Site was created in the cavern of a huge rotting tree to enshrine the The Remainings when they died. There, pinwheels were given as offerings to comfort The Remainings' spirits. A passageway ran beneath the Old Tree Site, and wind from below turned the pinwheels. Twins once tried to escape through this old passageway, but were ambushed and killed. The angry ceremony master created a seal in the Old Tree Site over the old passageway so that no other twins could escape. The seal's pinwheel keys were given to four priests, and handed down in their families. [Spirit Stone Radio] |Description :- The Spirit Stone Radio is a modified crystal radio set. |Memo Content:- The Spirit Stone Radio was a modified crystal radio set that used crystals as part of its circuitry. It picked up voices from the spirit world. It was created by Dr. Aso, who also designed the Camera Obscura. Dr. Aso, after giving Makabe the Camera Obscura prototype and the Spirit Stone Radio, traveled Japan seeking ways to complete his Camera Obscura, but died unexpectedly. His death meant the principles behind how the devices captured the spirit would remain a mystery. ################# # In-Game Files # ################# ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ In-Game Notebook ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [Bound Diary 1] |Description :- An old diary with red cord. An escape route is mentioned. |File Content:- If we perform the Crimson Sacrifice, then Yae and Sae will not need to go through with the ritual. But if our ritual failes, they will be the only ones left for the next sacrifice. I have to get Yae and Sae out of this village. The horror has to stop. There has to be another way. I cannot let Yae and Sae suffer like this... The old passageway under Kureha Shrine has been sealed ever since some twins tried to escape through there long ago. The Ceremony Master said they were killed by a cave-in during their escape. Concerned, the Ceremony Master sealed the Old Tree which enshines the Remaining. Although the path is sealed, a passageway still leads out. Opening the seal should make it possible to leave the village. The pinwheel keys that open the seal have been handed down through the families of four Veiled Priests. I was able to find the pinwheel for this family in the storehouse. After passing through a passageway, you only have to run through the forest and remember to never look back. But will those two have the willpower necessary? [Bound Diary 2] |Description :- An old diary with red cord. Concerns a pact with Mutsuki. |File Content:- The Ritual is coming up soon. Mutsuki is too weak to run away, and there is no way. I can carry him. He said he's forgive me no matter what happens. He does not want Sae and Yae to suffer either. I promised him that I would help Sae and Yae escape after the ritual. Mutsuki will remain here as a butterfly. I plan to remain here in the village with him too... [Bound Diary 3] |Description :- An old diary with red cord. About Ryozo Munakata. |File Content:- I heard Munakata is here. I wonder if it is because of the letter I sent him! The warm welcome he is getting can only mean that they are going to use him as a Kusabi in the Inner Ceremony... I cannot let him get caught up in this. I must tell him to get out of here quickly. [Bound Diary 4] |Description :- An old diary with red cord. Left by imprisoned boy. |File Content:- will Mutsuki ever be able to forgive me? I could not make him into a butterfly. I could not become one with him. It is all my fault. Please forgive me... [Bound Diary 5] |Description :- An old diary with red cord. About the location of keys. |File Content:- The three other pinwheel keys are hidden in the Kiryu, Osaka and Tachibana houses. Nobody expect me to run AFTER the ritual. At that time it should be easy to take the keys. Helping Yae and Sae escape may well be the last task I ever perform... [Butterfly Diary 1] |Description :- Diary with a Crimson Butterfly. Girl name Yae and Sae wrote it. |File Content:- Munakata and his teacher came to the village today. He said he was worried about Itsuki and come to help. But I can't tell outsiders about the village. Itsuki's locked up in the storehouse. I doubt he'll be allowed to talk with an outsider. Yae Mr. Makabe made a picture of us with his picture box. My face looked strange, but it was interesting to see. He's probably going to be X X, because our cleansing isn't finished yet. Before that happens, we have to help him escape. If I can become one with you Yae, I'll be happy. That's the only thing that matters to me. Sae [Butterfly Diary 2] |Description :- Diary with a Crimson Butterfly. About freeing the scholar. |File Content:- I was wrong. It's just like Itsuki said. Munakata's teacher is going to be a X. This has to stop! People like Mutsuki shouldn't have to die. I have to do something. A Veiled Priest took one of the cell keys to the rope temple. Yae It seems father plans to make that man a X. Even though he's Munakata's teacher! I know one cell key is hidden in father's bookshelves. To keep the X appeased, there's only one thing to do. If we perform the Crimson Sacrifice, perhaps people won't suffer like this... Sae [Butterfly Diary 3] |Description :- Diary with a Crimson Butterfly. About escaping the village. |File Content:- The time of the ritual is coming soon. Itsuki and Mutsuki's ritual didn't work, and this year it's our turn. I'm leaving the village with you. Itsuki will help us escape, and we'll be together forever, like I promised. Yae The truth is, I don't want to run. But as long as I can be with you, I'll follow you anywhere. Just don't leave me here all alone. Sae [Butterfly Diary 4] |Description :- Diary with a Crimson Butterfly. One side of the pages is blank. |File Content:- (blank page) Yae... Why did you leave by yourself? It's our fault that this is happening to Itsuki. You promised we'd always be together. Sae [Butterfly Diary 5] |Description :- Diary with a Crimson Butterfly. About a childhood promise. |File Content:- When we were small, we once went to the river that flows out of the village. The day we made a promise. We said we'd always stay together, forever. Even if we left the village, we wouldn't part. Yae We promised to be always be together. But my body is weak, and I might not be able to follow you. You might leave me behind... Just thinking about being alone scares me. As we grow older, we'll grow apart... We were born together, as one. I want to be with you again Yae. Then we can be together forever. Sae [Butterfly Diary 6] |Description :- Diary with a Crimson Butterfly. One side of the pages is blank. |File Content:- (blank page) If I stay here, someday Yae will come back for me. Can I become a butterfly without her? If I could, I'd always be near the village, waiting. Waiting at the place we made our promise. She'll come. I know she will. Sae [Crimson Diary 1] |Description :- Diary with a peony on the cover. Found in hiding spirit's closet. |File Content:- Both inside and outside are pitch black. Nobody is in the house, but I feel a presence. Itsuki! Help me! I'm so scared. I can't get out of the closet. Help me Itsuki! [Crimson Diary 2] |Description :- Diary with a peony on the cover. About a boy named Itsuki. |File Content:- The day after the ceremony, my brother Itsuki came back alone. His black hair was white! Where has my older brother Mutsuki gone? Since Mutsuki disappeared, Itsuki doesn't want to talk. He is still nice to me, but his eyes is always sad. Whay happened on the say of the ceremony??? Itsuki gave me a bell. My eyes are not too good. The bell will tell him if I go near a dangerous place. Itsuki said he will always come when he hears the bell. He said even if I am hiding away and crying, he will find me. [Crimson Diary 3] |Description :- Diary with a peony on the cover. The entry is about a key. |File Content:- Itsuki told me to hold the key for his room. He said I can't let anyone go in there. He said if his friend comes, to give the key to his friend. I am so happy that he gave me such an important job! Itsuki friend came to the house. I got scared, so I hid. I couldn't give him the key. [Crimson Diary 4] |Description :- Diary with a peony on the cover. Yae is blamed for Itsuki's disappearance. |File Content:- Because of Yae, Itsuki has been taken away somewhere. How come? Itsuki did nothing to her. It's all her fault for running away! [Green Diary 1] |Description :- Diary kept in a green book. Belongs to the folklorist assistant. |File Content:- It's been at least 10 years since I last came here with my father. The village still looks exactly the same. Coming here when I was a boy was what made me want to become a folklorist. I wonder how Itsuki and Mutsuki is doing? The letter Itsuki sent me worries me... I asked around, and was told that Itsuki and Mutsuki died of an illness. There was no mention of anything like this in the letter we exchanged. I looked through Itsuki's writtings. His family were covering it up, but I found that he was looking for a way out of the village. Since he was a little boy, he was always afraid of some sort of "ceremony". I wonder if he ran away from the village? If not, then he has to be somewhere. [Green Diary 2] |Description :- Diary kept in a green book. About Yae and Sae. |File Content:- I met Yae and Sae. The Ceremony Master says they will be the Shrine Maidens in the next ceremony. I asked them about Mutsuki, but they wouldn't answer. The last letter from Itsuki said to come for Sae and Yae on the day of the ceremony. I wonder if he was trying to help Yae and Sae escape from the village? [Green Diary 3] |Description :- Diary kept in a green book. About Itsuki's little sister. |File Content:- I saw Itsuki's sister in the corridor. She is usually frightened of strangers, and runs away and hides. But today was different. It seemed she wanted to tell me something, but she ran away without saying a word. Maybe Itsuki left a message with her? [Green Diary 4] |Description :- Diary kept in a green book. Describes leaving the village. |File Content:- I received a letter from Mr. Makabe that said I should leave the village and return home before him. Yae and Sae brought the letter here. They told me that outsiders cannot stay because the festival is coming soon. Mr. Makabe has special permission to see it. I whispered to Yae that I would come for them on the day of the ceremony. Yae tensed for a moment, then acted like she didn't hear, and left. It seems they may really be planning to leave before the ceremony ocurs. That means Itsuki must still be somewhere in the village too. [Green Diary 5] |Description :- Diary kept in a green book. A letter addressed to Itsuki. |File Content:- Itsuki, I pray that you read this. I can't stay in this village any longer. I told Yae and Sae that I would come for them on the day of the ceremony. After they make it out of the village, I'll take care of them. Don't worry. When I get them out, I'll come back for you next. My grip seemed to cause her so much pain. At the very end, the Veiled Priest came to help me. But Azami said she wanted only me to do it. I became one with Azami... But now she's gone. I can't talk about it anymore. Father brought Azami back. All I could do was apologize. She forgave me. The killing is over now. No more. I'll never hurt anyone again. I'll never let anyone kill again. Father says Azami has been possessed, and he's trying to kill her. He's trying to kill Azami. I won't let him do it. I won't let that happen anymore. Part of a report about "Twins". |File Content:- For some reason, one of the statues is in the form of twins. I have also found a description of a "Twin Deities Statue" in the writtings lying around the house... In this region, twins serve an unusual purpose. Twins sisters and brothers perform a special ritual here. Each time a ritual is completed, a new Twin Deities Statue is placed somewhere in the village. The ritual occurs every few decades, and judging by the number of Twin Deities Statues, this tradition is very old. For some reason, one of the twins always has its head broken off. Sometimes the are sculpted without a head from the start. Maybe it doesn't mean anything, but something here doesn't feel right. I'm beginning to think that I was wrong to leave Miyako behind alone. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any detailed information about the twin ritual. I have to find a way to get out of here fast... [Village Report 2] |Description :- Lost surveyor's notes. A report about Kurosawa House. |File Content:- I looked down into the old well but it was pitch black, and I couldn't see a thing. If you listen closely, you can only hear wind blowing, and it seems that the water has all been dried up. I can't tell which was here first, the house or the well. Neither has been used in a while. According to the records, this house used to belong to the powerful Tsuchihara family. In the village, the Osaka, Kiryu, and Tachibana families were also influential. Each house had its own crest, and held power in the village. As a group they were also in charge of a special ritual. Each was a branch of the Kurosawa family, who adminstered to the ceremony. They performed the role of priests. the Kurosawa name is scattered throughout the literature, but no concrete information is written. I have no doubt that they held absolute power though. Where in the world did the villagers go? And how do you get out of this village? The answers to these questions lie within the Kurosawa house. I'm not sure how I know, but I have a strong feeling about this. [Village Report 3] |Description :- Lost surveyor's notes. A report about butterflies. |File Content:- I found a small shrine at the top of a long set of stairs, shrouded in mist. It seems very old, but it is well-made, and has not fallen into disrepair. The entrance has a large butterfly crest painted on it. It's the same as the one on the building beyong the large bridge. Butterflies seem to have a special meaning, just like twins. They are frequently mentioned in the ritual literature. "Butterfly" means something else to the villagers too. I notice that the word always appears in writtings about the ritual. I may not know its exact meaning, but the fact that the butterfly crest is on a shrine indicates that it is very special indeed. I should investigate futher. [Village Report 4] |Description :- Lost surveyot's notes. The notes are about Misono Hill. |File Content:- I came to this hill to take a look at the gate I passed through when I entered the village. But when I tried to find it, the ruined gate was buried under trees and other flora. I can't find the path that we used to come here... This hill is called "Misono Hill". According to literature, this location plays a key role in the ceremony. Right in the middle lies a massive rock, known as the "Offering Stone", and the surrounding area is protected by wards. This "Offering Stone" also seems to be a "Cover" for sealing some kind of hole. What sort of hole need a gigantic stone like this for a cover? Why does it need to be covered at all? What if this is the very thing I've been searching for, the way out of the village? I have to check this out throughly. [Village Report 5] |Description :- Lost surveyot's notes. About a passageway. |File Content:- How many days have I been in the village? 2? Maybe 3? It feels like I've been here for years. In this village of endless night, it's easy to lose all sense of time. Miyako is utterly exhausted. Sometimes she manages to give me a weak smile, but it only makes me more uncomfortable. Physically and mentally, she's running on empty. I haven't found my way out yet, but sifting through the material I gathered in the village again, I found a clue. A gigantic undeground tunnel, called a passageway, connects all the important locations in the village. It is used for travel between the houses during the ceremony, and also to store important items. It is difficult to estimate the scale of the passages from the map, but there is sure to be a way through there. I didn't find any information about the entrance to a passageway. However, there must be a clue somewhere in the Kurosawa house, as they presided over the ceremony. I've decided to leave Miyako here and search the Kurosawa house alone. I'll find a way out of the village and then come back for her. [Bloody Memo] |Description :- The bloody note looks like it was written by the surveyor. |File Content:- I have to go back. Long ago, a massacre occured on the day of a ceremony, and the village was wiped from the map. Twin Deities Statues in the forest lead lost people to the village entrance. Once you passed the gate however, you cannot go back. The village eternally relives that night of death. The insane laughter of a woman is said to echo throughout the village. The only survivor of the massacre at the village was a lone woman. [Woman's Notebook 2] |Description :- Notebook of a lost woman. About a presence outside. |File Content:- Sometimes I sense someone passing by the window. He carries a torch, and mutter things. He seems to be searching for somebody. but it is not Masumi. Even in a crazy place like this. The darkness here is creeping into my dreams. A Kusabi is an outsider, made into a Buddha and offered to the X. The more they suffer, the greater the calming of the X. [Ceremony Master's Note 1] |Description :- The note discusses the increasing strength of the X's Malice. |File Content:- The Malice coming from the X is getting stronger. I've searched, and there is no record of it getting this strong in the past. Recently, poor harvests and deaths have begun to increase. The time of repentance for Tachibana's failure to perform the ritual is drawing near. Half of the Mourners were driven mad by the Malice and jumped into the X. We must prepare more Mourners, we'll use the sinners. If we don't do something, the X will overflow in a few years. I must use my daughters in the ritual. Sae and Yae must be cleansed. For the village! [Ceremony Master's Note 2] |Description :- The note is about an Outsider being held captive. |File Content:- An Outsider visited with perfect timing. I'll use him for the Hidden Ceremony, and pacify the X. We must ensure he doesn't escape before that. [Ceremony Master's Note 3] |Description :- The note is about Yae and Sae. |File Content:- When the twins were born, I was miserable knowing that they were doomed. They were raised freely, without pain or sadness. They say the pain of the X never stops. The elder sister must kill the younger in the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. It's a cruel, horrible fate. [Ceremony Master's Note 4] |Description :- The note is about the twins running away. |File Content:- Sae and Yae ran away with that boy, a Remaining. The Kusabi calmed the X a little, but it is still rumbling. If the twins aren't brought back, the village will be swallowed by the X. They are my daughters, I must find them. [Ceremony Master's Note 5] |Description :- The note is about performing the ritual with just Sae. |File Content:- Yae is not coming back. Did she really leave Sae behind? Did she survive the forest? If Sae is cleansed and acts as Shrine Maiden alone, the X might be appeased. THe records do not mention any ritual with a single Shrine Maiden, but I will do it. I have to try. Yae, why did you run? Why won't you come back? [Doll Maker Note 1] |Description :- It explains the reasons for constructing the doll. |File Content:- Akane has become a Remaining. To comfort her, I'll make a doll that looks like Azami. She has been emotionless since the day of the ritual. I'll make the doll look exactly like Azami, so that when they are together, no one will be able to tell them apart. Akane never leaves Azami's side for even a second, always whispering things to her. I don't know what she says, but at least she seems to be slowly returning to her former self. If we didn't have this ritual, Azami wouldn't have become a butterfly, and Akane wouldn't have lost her spirit. [Doll Maker Note 2] |Description :- It's about a spirit taking possession of the doll. |File Content:- Last night, I heard footsteps. I thought it was Akane, but it was really Azami-walking by herself. Akane has spent so much time thinking of her sister, a spirit must have taken over the doll. It is said that when a spirit takes residence in a doll, it can steal the soul of others. Akane isn't a person anymore. She's like a doll. Controlled by Azami, she keeps repeating "I don't want to kill", over and over. She looks so much like my daughter... Azami must be killed, again. [Doll Maker Note 3] |Description :- The note says that the mechanism is broken. |File Content:- Akane damaged the mechanism to access the passageway, and she took part of the doll. I have to restore the twin doll to normal, and drop the possessed doll of Azami into the X, to send the spirit back to hell. But that path was the only way to the X... [Doll Maker Note 4] |Description :- The note says that he saw the spirit of his daughter, Azami. |File Content:- I saw Azami, even though she should be in the X now... She was asking me to kill the Azami doll. I have made a grave mistake. The twins had at last become one again... I was wrong to make that doll. I think Azami was trying to tell me where the head and hands of the doll are hidden. They're hidden in a box, somewhere in the house... [Doll Maker Note 5] |Description :- The note is about returning the spirit to the X. |File Content:- First I have to kill the doll by hanging it. Then I must throw it into the X. It knows this and is controlling Akane, trying to kill me. I have to throw it in, even if seeing the X blinds me. My daughter must die again... And Akane must relive the pain of losing her sister. If we didn't have this ritual, no one would have to feel that kind of pain... [Camera Obscura Pointers] |Description :- It is about a Camera Obscura. It was lying next to the flashlight. |File Content:- This camera was made by Dr. Aso to take photograph of beings in the spiritual plane that normally cannot be seen. It can reveal events from the past through the lingering thoughts of individuals. It is also able to photograph spiritual beings that are invisible to the human eye. Taking a photo of an unseen being has an exorcismal effect but simultaneously created a sort of link with them. If the Camera Obscura is used carelessly, these beings may even gain the upper hand on the user. I wonder if I can photograph the site at the heart of this village's "Forbidden Ritual"? If Dr. Aso were here, I'm sure he would be excited. If a person wears a crystal for a long time, their thoughts will remain within, creating a special type of crystal, a Spirit Stone. According to Dr. Aso, the radio also pick up sounds from the spirit world, indicating feelings and intuitions in a similar manner to the sympathetic phenomenon that occurs twins. [Folklorist 1] |Description :- This note is about All God's Village. |File Content:- The Ceremony Master, Mr. Kurosawa, gave me a very warm welcome. The village has no "chief". The Ceremony Master presides over the village. I wonder if this village was founded by people who wanted to preserve their sacred rituals and festivals? Most notable among All God's folklore is the "gate to hell" lengend that has been passed down for years. It is an archetypal tale of a gate or hole that marks the border to the world of the dead, also called Hades, the underworld, or the netherworld. It is a forbidden place that is feared and hated, but it is also worshipped as well. The idea of hell has been a core belief of humans since ancient times. This village supports the theory that the belief is universal. The Forbidden Ritual regarding this "gate to hell" that takes place here is something no one is allowed to see or speak of. This strict taboo is probably the result of a ceremony concerning the border with hell coming closer to the living world. Villagers lead a simple life. Deep in the mountains, they struggle to forage food for their daily meals. The village has little contact with the outside world. They continue to practice the ways of old, frozen in time. [Folklorist 2] |Description :- This note concerns the "Crimson Sacrifice". |File Content:- The guardian deity statues in this area are different in that they are engraved with Shrine Maidens. The village children say that the statues honor the god of the village. Also, a book in the house links the statues to something called the "Crimson Sacrifice". Maybe the Forbidden Ritual is related to this "Crimson Sacrifice"... [Folklorist 3] |Description :- This note is about the village as the ceremony draws near. |File Content:- For several days, earthquakes have increased in frequency. At the same time, Crimson Butterflies are swarming, sometimes blocking the sun. Somehow, they look sad. Villagers that see them put their hands together in prayer. The entire village has an ait of impending doom. The village is quite fearful of the earth's fury. Perhaps the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual is performed to purify the ground. In the past, every area had some type of ground purifying ceremony. Many of these offered sacrifices to try to calm the gods. If that custome still remains today, it explains the stillness in the village. The Twin Shrine Maidens must be the "guardian deities" of this village. The guardian deities, the Twin Shrine Maidens, have become Crimson Butterflies, and returning to the village. [Folklorist 4] |Description :- It is about a disaster called the "Repentance". |File Content:- Ancient village records have been stored in the Ceremony Master's house. Many discuss the legends, folktales or rituals of the village. There are sure to be many records of folklore value. The Forbidden Ritual is also called the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. Twins are used to help seal the gate to hell. There are two parts. The Visible Ceremony, which occurs periodically, and if it fails, a Hidden Ceremony is performed. If all the ceremonies fail, the gate to hell will open, the dead will pour out, and the skies will go dark. They call this disaster the "Repentance". The whereabouts of Munakata's friends, the twin boys Itsukiu and Mutsuki, are unknown, which is a little troubling. If they are found, I might be able to ask about the village. [Folklorist 5] |Description :- It is about the bridge connecting the Twin Houses. |File Content:- The Kiryu house and the Tachibana house are linked by a connecting corridor and are called the "Twin Houses". The Twin Shrine Maidens will stay there before the ceremony and are apparently cleansed there too. During the cleansing they are not allowed to go outside, but they may pass freely between the houses. The bridge on the 2nd floor of the Tachibana house is called the "Heaven Bridge", and the bridge in the basement of the Kiryu house is called the "Earth Bridge". The "Earth Bridge" also connects to the passageway below. The passageway is a natural cave under the village. At its deepest point lies a forbidden place. Only a certain class of Veiled Priests and people called the Mourners may enter. It seems that the gate to hell is there and the Forbidden Ritual is actually performed underground. [Folklorist 6] |Description :- It is about a map obtained from the twin girls. |File Content:- The twin girls of the house gave me a map that shows a side door. They said that the Hidden Ceremony is near, and I should escape out the side door during the night. They left so quickly I couldn't even ask them about it. The other people in the house are acting normally. Was there some ulterior motive behind the generous hospitality? Just to be safe, I will tell Munakata to go home ahead of me. [Folklorist 7] |Description :- It is about an escape route out of the village. |File Content:- I found a map of the assageway among the old books. It seems to be of an underground cave used for the ritual. It also looks like there might be a way out of the village. This exit was also accessible from the shrine grounds, but that way was sealed long ago... [Folklorist 8] |Description :- He wrote this while imprisoned in the cell. |File Content:- Long ago, a visitor to a mountain village become a ceremonial sacrifice. When the Veiled Priests captured me, they said things like "Outsider" and "Kusabi"... What exactly is the nature of the Hidden Ceremony? The key the twin girls gave me must be for the side door of the house. They key for the cell must be in another house. According to the map, the key is hidden in a cave under the Osaka house. Maybe this is the cellar in the passageway that I read about... [Folklorist 9] |Description :- He wrote this while imprisoned in the cell. |File Content:- As expected, the jailer won't tell me anything, won't even say a word. It's a total reversal of the treatment I got when I came to the village. I guess this was the real reason I was invited to the village. The cell is also used to store documents. I was able to find several important manuscripts. I can continue my research, but I doubt anyone will ever see it. - Hellish Abyss - It is unclear how long this hole that connects our world to the underworld has existed. They say that if the cover to it is opened, it will cause a terrible disaster. This is the origin of the "gate to hell" folktale. As a taboo word, it is often represented in other texts as "X". The suffering of the sacrifice is used to seal the Hellish Abyss. - The Mourners - They are the guardians of the Hellish Abyss, and the only ones that can get near its. When the year of the ceremony comes, the Mourners sew their eye shut so they cannot glimpse the Hellish Abyss. Criminals and anyone that has seen the Hellish Abyss also forced to become Mourners. Afterwards, they live underground, never returning to the surface. What can be so bad that looking at it is forbidden? [Folklorist 10] |Description :- It is about Twin Shrine Maidens. |File Content:- Twin Shrine Maidens are sacrificed in the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. Boys are sometimes used as well. In this case, they are called Altar Twins. The people of this region believe that twins were once a single being, which was split into two at birth. The ceremony is based on the belief that when the two bodies reunited as one, the Shrine Maiden will gain the power of a deity. The text says "the older sister must X X the younger and throw her into the X". The X X part must refer to the most horrible part of the ritual, probably some kind of "sacrifice". [Folklorist 11] |Description :- He wrote this right before being made into a Kusabi. |File Content:- Activity outside the cell is bustling. It seems that the Hidden Ceremony is very near. I hope Munakata made it out of this village. If the "gate to hell" known as Hellish Abyss really does exist, I will be able to see it with my own eyes tomorrow. Even if I am to be thrown into it as sacrifice, I am at least happy that I can see this forbidden place at last. [Folklorist 12] |Description :- It is a note about the order of twins. |File Content:- Twins play an important part in the ritual. In recent years, the goverment issued a decree that the first twin to come out is the eldest. Each region used to have its own rules until that decree was made. When I asked the Ceremony Master about the village's rules, he grinnned and said that tradition is tradition. This village still practices the old way. The twin that is born second is considered the elder. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ In-Game Photos ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [Girl goes into Wall] |Description :- Photo of a girl facing wall. Amakura Family The family name of the two main characters. Not much is known about their family backgrounds, or who is the rest of the family member beside the twins. We know that the twin's childhood "secret" playground is the forest, none other than the forest that surrounds the Lost Village. When the twins are still young, they venture into the forest without adult supervision. Mio runs ahead of Mayu, while Mayu tried hard to catch up with her. But then Mayu slipped and fell down a cliff. This accident damaged Mayu's leg permenantly, that's why she walks in a limp right now and the pain on her leg comes on and off. Because of this accident, Mio somehow felt responsible and take care of her sister's well being. A) Mio Amakura The main character of the game. You take control of her almost throughout the whole game. The younger of the Amakura twins. She has slight psychic ability. She is also bright and outgoing. Due to a childhood accident, Mio seriously think that she is to blame for her elder sister injury. Since that day, she felt responsible to always protect Mayu and take care of her well-being. Her slight psychic ability is amplified after she found the Camera Obscura. She also can sometimes see the images that her sister does when she holds Mayu's hand. She ended up in All God's Village when she follows Mayu which is lead by a Crimson Butterfly during their revisit to their secret childhood play area. B) Mayu Amakura The sub-character of the game. You only take control of her sometimes in the game. The elder of the Amakura twins. She is gentle, withdrawn and thoughtful. She also has the stronger psychic ability. When she fell down a cliff while playing with Mio as a child, her legs are injured, leaving her with a weak leg. That's why she walks in a limp. She is also physically weak. It is unsure if she is born in that way or the accident is the reason why she is physically weak. Due to that, she relies heavily on her sister, Mio. Due to the reason of her strong sensitivity to the paranormal activity, she senses alot more then Mio. But she has little resistance to it, and is often used by ghosts as a medium. She ended up in All God's Village while following a Crimson Butterfly. C) Misao Amakura (Aso?) [NOTE: Not available in the game] This character was mentioned in the Tecmo's (Japanese) Website. From the gists that I can capture (I'm not very good in Japanese), Misao is the father of the Amakura Twins in the game. It seems that he is also lost in the village as well, but details are not being told. Or perhaps I don't know how to read it or something. It is also mentioned that he is a direct decendant to the mysterious Dr. Aso. No details are given why he changed his family name from Aso to Amakura. Maybe we will see this revealed in Fatal Frame III? D) Shizuka Amakura [NOTE: Not available in the game] Also mentioned in the Japanese website. Not much details are released about her. She is the mother of the Twins and wife of Misao. After Misao's dissapear into the Lost Village, she simply told the girls that he died and do not mention about the manner further. 2. The Couple The couple consists of Masumi Makimura and Miyako Sudo. Both of them ventured into All God's Village and ended up trapped in there. Apparently, they are trapped in the village a year before the events of Fatal Frame 2 take place. A) Masumi Makimura Masumi Makimura is a geological surveyor. He is sent into the forest for an investigation before the forest is submerged once the All God's Dam is built. He wondered into the village during his investigations, and is trapped there. A search party was dispatched to search for him, but is called off after ten days. Masumi roamed the lost village, searching for a way out. He also did a research on the village while trapped in there. The Village Report files are done by him. He went to Kurosawa house alone to search for clues regarding the underground passageway that he suspect could be use to escape the village. He died in the storeroom at the Great Hall after being slashed by the Kusabi. B) Miyako Sudo. Girlfriend of Masumi Makimura. Believing that her boyfriend is still alive somewhere, she ventured into the forest, hoping to find him. She is full aware of the rumors about the lost village and how lost people is spirited away by the village, but still venture into the forest. She must have deeply in love with Masumi. She is also trapped in the village once she stumbles into it. I also suspected that she has slight phychic ability, since she can sense the villager spirit passing by Osaka House window. How long is she trapped in the village is unknown. She got strangled to death by the ghost of Masumi (after he got slashed by the Kusabi). 3. Kurosawa Family Head family of the All God's Village. They held absolute power in the village. The house of Osaka, Kiryu and Tachibana were a branch of the Kurosawa family. A) Ryokan Kurosawa The last Ceremony Master of All God's Village before The Repentance. He is the father to Yae and Sae. He was shamed when his daughters fled before the ritual commence. He died when the Repentance spread through the village after the failed ritual. B) Sae Kurosawa Sae is the "younger" of the twins (according to the tradition of the village), but in modern term she is the elder one. She is supposed to be strangled by Yae if the Crimson Sacrifice is required. Physically-wise she is weaker than her sister, Yae. Sae has a deep attachment to Yae, and wouldn't want to be seperated from Yae. She doesn't want to escape from the village, but Yae insisted that they escape. Don't want to be separated, she followed Yae's lead. But during their escape, Sae tripped and fall down the mountain path. She was later captured by the villagers. Hoping for her sister to come back for her, she was sacrificed as the last resort of calming the Hellish Abyss. But the ritual failed, and she returned along with the failed Kusabi. The Repentance swept through the village. Corrupted by the Malice, her maniacal laughter echoes through the village on that day. The Kusabi and her then slaughtered all the villagers that survived. C) Yae Kurosawa Yae is the "elder" of the twins (according to the tradition of the village), but in modern term she is the younger one. Yae loved sae so much that she don't want to perform the Crimson Sacrifice. With Itsuki's help, she planned to run away from the village together with Yae on the day of the ritual. Unfortunately, Sae slipped and fell off the mountain path. Yae looked for Sae, but she got lost in the mountain while searching. When she finally got back near the village entrance, the whole village was gone. This was because The Repentance occured before she arrived and engulfed the whole village. Ryozo Munakata, the one who left the village under the orders of Mr. Makabe returned due to a promise he had with Itsuki, found Yae alone and crying at the place where the village is used to be. He took care of Yae, who had lost memory. The circumtances how Yae lost her memory is still unknown now. Yae and Ryozo got married later. Mikoto from Fatal Frame was their child. They visited Himuro Mansion in the future, and the events prior to Fatal Frame unfold. Yae died by hanging herself at the Cherry Blossom tree at the Atrium in Himuro Mansion. 4. Tachibana Family A branch of Kurosawa family. A) Mutsuki and Itsuki Tachibana The "Altar Twins" of the Tachibana family. They performed the previous Crimson Sacrifice one year before The Repentance that swept the village off the map. The Ritual ended up in failure due the love Itsuki had for his twin Mutsuki. The reason why they did the ritual is because they don't want Yae and Sae to perform it. Unfortunatly, it was a failure therefore Yae and Sae's turn would come next year. Itsuki, saddened by the events of the Ritual, had his hair turned white. He was then very quiet, although he still remain nice to his sister Chitose and the twins of Kurosawa, Yae and Sae. Itsuki had made a pact with Mutsuki before the Ritual that they wouldn't let the same thing happen to both Yae and Sae. To fulfill his promise, Itsuki planned the escape for the Kurosawa Twins. He also writes to his friend, Ryozo Munakata to ask for his aid on helping Sae and Yae escape during the day of the ceremony. One year later, on the day of the Ritual, Itsuki distracted the villagers so that Yae and Sae could escape by using the passageway that runs under the Old Tree Site that leads outside. He was then captured by the villagers and locked up in a cell in the Storehouse. Satisfied that he fulfilled the promise to Mutsuki, and at the same time saddened due to the fact that he could not make Mutsuki into a butterfly and become one with him last year, he commited suicide by hanging himself. If it weren't for the promise, Itsuki would have commit suicide right after the failed ritual. B) Chitose Tachibana Chitose is Mutsuki and Itsuki's younger sister. She a very delicate and shy child. Deeply attached to her brothers, she loved them very much. She always hid in closets whenever strangers come to the house to visit. She also don't talk much to anyone beside family member. Her eyes are not very good, and that is the reason why Itsuki gave her a bell, so that he could know if she goes near a dangerous place or in hiding. She blames Yae when Itsuki was taken away by villagers after Yae escaped. When the Repentance came, she hid inside the closet to get away from the darkness. She was too afraid to come out, and witnessed the entire massacre from the closet. She died in the closet, probably out of hunger and fear. 5. Kiryu Family A branch of Kurosawa family. A) Yoshitastsu Kiryu Father for the twins Akane and Azami Kiryu. He is gifted in doll making. After the Crimson Sacrifice done by her daughter, he make a doll to look exactly like Azami to cheer up The Remaining, Akane. Akane, who was emotionless previously, never leave Azami Doll, and always whispering to the doll. He thought that her daughter is finally returning to her previous state. But on one night, he saw the doll walking by herself. Suspecting the doll has been possessed by a spirit, he wanted to destroy the doll. But Akane, who was controlled by the doll, took part of the doll, the arms and head and hid it around the house. Yoshitastsu also saw the real Azami, asking him to kill the Azami doll. The only way for him to kill the doll is by hanging it, and later throw it into the X. He was killed by Akane who was controlled by Azami doll. B) Akane Kiryu The "elder" of the twins, in modern term she would be the younger one. She questioned the Crimson Sacrifice nature and don't want to kill her sister, Azami. During the Crimson Sacrifice, she couldn't kill her sister, and a Veiled Priest came over to help her end it. After the ritual, she became emotionless. That's why her father made Azami doll to cheer her up. She thought that her father brought back Azami for her, and apologize to her. She would not kill anyone anymore. But the doll took advantage of her and controlled her, slowly corrupting her mind. She ended up killing her own father. Akane died later after Azami doll sucked her soul out. C) Azami Kiryu the "younger" of the twins, in modern term she would be the elder one. After the Crimson Sacrice, she turned into a butterfly. I think that during the ceremony, her soul split into two, just like what happened to Kirie in Fatal Frame. The "good" soul transformed into a butterfly, while the "evil" one possesses Azami doll later. When Azami doll is threatened to suck out Akane's soul, the "good" Azami appeared to her father, asking him to kill the doll. In Violet Diary 3, I suspected it is written by Azami herself, explaining that a substitute for her is not needed since she has already become one with Akane, and asked so that the doll would be killed. 6. The Folklorist and his assistant. A) Seijiro Makabe Seijiro Makabe is a friend to the mysterious Dr. Kunihiko Aso. He is also the teacher for Ryozo Munakata. Borrowing the Camera Obscura prototype from Dr. Aso, he tried it on an unknown stone (that looks like a seal or offering) and found out that the camera really works. He travelled to All God's Village to clear up the old legends about the hell gate and also to make account of the practice of the village to raise twins as Shrine Maiden and the Forbidden Ritual. He is a very dillegent man, and often digs through old documents and books to futher his research. He was later captured by the villagers for the purpose of making him into a "Kusabi", or human sacrifice to appease the Hellish Abyss. During his stay in the cell, he uncover the nature behind the village culture and its ceremony. Although he knows that he would be sacrificed, he is happy that he can at last see the Hellish Abyss with his own eyes. He was subjected to the Cutting Ceremony, tortured and slashed before being thrown in the Hellish Abyss. He returns as the corrupted Kusabi alongside Sae on the day of The Repentance, killing every survivors. B) Ryozo Munakata Ryozo visited All God's Village about 10 years ago he was a boy along with his father. His exprience in the village is the main reason why he wanted to be a folklorist. He received a letter from his friend, Itsuki, asking him to go to the village on the day of the ceremony and help in an escape. He came earlier to the village though, following his teacher Mr. Makabe. When he was in the village, he searched for his friends, Mutsuki and Itsuki but could not find them. He also met Yae and Sae, and guessed that Itsuki wanted him to aid on Sae and Yae's escape. He left the village before the ceremony, after receiving instructions from Mr. Makabe to ask him leave, and that the village doesn't let outsiders stay during the ceremony. He came on the day of the ceremony to fulfill his promise made to Itsuki, but instead of finding the village, he found Yae alone and crying at the place where the village is supposed to be. He took care of Yae, who seemed to lost her memories, and eventually got married to her. Mikoto, whom are suspected to be Miku's grandmother, are his and Yae's child. He brought his family along to Himuro Mansion in the future to futher his research on the mansion. He got killed by Evil Kire after opening the giant gate door in Demon Mouth. 7. Others A) Dr. Kunihiko Aso The mysterious key figure to the Fatal Frame universe. He is the one who created the Camera Obscura and the Spirit Stone Radio. You can say he's a genius, and madly involved in reasearch about the spiritual plane. He modified the latest technology gadgets from his time, like the camera and the radio to help in his research. Like any madman scientist, he was shunned from the academic world. He loaned the Camera Obscura prototye and the spirit stone radio to one of his few friends, Seijiro Makabe. He then traveled Japan to find ways to complete his Camera Obscura. He died unexpectly and this means the theory behind how his gadgets worked is forever lost. <-------------------------------------------------------> | Section 4 - In-depth Analysis on In-Game Information. | <-------------------------------------------------------> I skipped the whole Memo, Scraps, and Old Books analysis because those are self-explanatory once you read through it. Oh yeah Photos and Maps are also ignored since its purpose in the game is to provide clues, so no point delving so deep in it. I was thinking of doing a Radio analysis as well, but decided against it. If you want to know more about the Radio, browse up and check the In-Game Radio section. I guess I would put some rantings along with it later to add some of my personal views. 1. Notebook Section Analysis. A) Bound Diary This diary is written by Itsuki Tachibana. The entry started one year before The Repentance, before the Crimson Sacrifice is done by the twin brothers. After the ritual, most of the entries are about clues and ways to help in the escape of the Kurosawa twins, Yae and Sae. The last entry is apparently done before Itsuki hang himself in the cell. B) Butterfly Diary This diary is written by both Sae and Yae Kurosawa. Normally the first page is written by Yae and the page after that is written by Sae. It holds the thoughts and events that happen before their Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, until after the escape planned by Itsuki was done. The last few entries were done only by Sae, after she got caught by the villagers. C) Crimson Diary This diary is written by Chitose Tachibana. The entry started after the Ritual done by Mutsuki and Itsuki. The last entry is done during The Repentance, when she is hiding in the closet. D) Green Diary Written by Ryozo Munakata. The entry started when he arrived at the village together with his teacher, Mr. Makabe. He searched around for whereabouts of Itsuki and Mutsuki. He also guessed that Itsuki was trying to help Yae and Sae escape. The last entry was a letter addressed to Itsuki stating that he had to leave under instructions of Mr. Makabe but he would come back to get Yae and Sae out, and later returning to help Itsuki out. E) Violet Diary Diary kept by Akane Kiryu. The timeline of this series is unknown. All I know is that this is done before and after a Crimson Sacrifice, but I have no idea how long it was ago. It is definete that this happen before the events of Itsuki and Mutsuki Crimson Sacrifice, but how long back is unsure. Violet Diary 3 is intersting though... as far as I can make it, it was written by Azami, who should turned into a butterfly. And the Spirit List stated that Azami doll was possessed by Azami's spirit, that's why I come to a conclusion that the spirit of Azami "split" like what happened in Fatal Frame (on Kirie). F) Village Report Written by Masumi Makimura. It contains the research he has done when he was trapped in the village. It also shows that he is also desperate to find a way out of the village. The last reports (Part 5) shows that he already meet up with his girlfriend, and left for Kurosawa house (leaving Miyako at Osaka's) to find clues to escape the village. G) Woman's Notebook Written by Miyako Sudo, girlfriend of Masumi. It shows that interestingly enough, she knew about the village by rumors, but she risked it to find her boyfriend. She also display a slight phychic ability on Notebook 2, when she can sense the wandering villager carrying a torch. On Notebook 6 and 7, it shows that she is trapped in the village for a long period of time, maybe even weeks. It is is hard to say since the time in the village is warped. Through her dreams, she begins to get visions of what happened in the village. The last entry is done when she met up with her boyfriend, Masumi and the entry of this series ended during that time. 2. Film Reel Analysis. There are a total of 7 reels in the game. No idea what exactly is the purpose of this reels, except that it sometimes shows parts of the in-game scenes that you will find throughout the game. There are times however, if you view the reel through the Viewfinder of your camera, that the film will stop and a random ghost will attack you. (I got a Broken Neck attacking me while viewing Film Reel 1 and 3, and a Fallen Woman while viewing Film Reel 7) [Film Reel 1] |Location found :- Kiryu House, 1F Projector Room. |Contains :- Well as far as I can see, it is the footage of the scenes strating from the Family Altar Room at Kurosawa family house, making its way down to the place the Cutting Ceremony is done, and then going futher down. There is a fly on the screen, but it bears no significance. About 3 qurters through the film, I notice that the film frames skipped a little, and you will notice a girl or some sort on the right side of the film (just for a short while). At the end of the film, there are flashes of some sort of explosion, but I suspect it is the Malice exploding out due to The Repentance. [Film Reel 2] |Location found :- Tachibana, 1F Projector Room |Contains :- Well, the first scene shows the Hellish Abyss, with a lone mouner in front of the Abyss. After that the scene change to priests, and they bang their staffs up and down (just like during the normal ending). A bunch of priest is shown, and they seem escorting someone down to the Hellish Abyss (probably Sae). Then, scenes from the Repentace bursting out is shown, where earthquakes happen and priests are losing firm footing on ground. The last scene show the lone Mourner again, and it points you to look down the Hellish Abyss. [Film Reel 3] |Location found :- Kiryu, 1F Clock Hall |Contains :- It started with the Cutting Ritual, or the Kusabi Ritual. Scenes from this reel mostly showed Ryokan Kurosawa, and Seijiro Makabe being tied high up on the Rope Temple, and already been slashed many times. The flashes that happen during this reel mostly showed Seijiro's arrival at the village, meeting up with Sae and Yae, and an unknown pair holding and umbrella. [Film Reel 4] |Location found :- Kiryu House, 1F Hallway of Contrasts |Contains :- First it shows Sae being captured by the villagers after the attempted escape. Flashes later appear showing a pair of twins in Kimono running with the villagers is pursuit, presumbably Yae and Sae prior their capture, then it moves back to the event wheer Sae got escorted by a bunch of Priests down to the Hellish Abyss area. Then after that the scene shows The Repentance event, where Malice exploded out of the hole. It then shows a short frame of a white figure below an archway, presumbably the archway near the Hellish Abyss. After that it shows a pair of Mourners throwing something into the Abyss, and later shifts the scene to the earthquake and a bunch of priest losing footing prior the Repentance. The Repentance blows out after that. And then it show Sae, corrupted by the Malice and laughing maniacly. [Film Reel 5] |Location found :- Tachibana, 1F Room with Tatami |Contains :- This is an interesting reel. It shows Miyako entering the Osaka's House. Moving along the Dirt Passageway. The flashed that happen along the Dirt Passageway includes an image of Masumi (just like the non-hostile ghost you see during gameplay) and two twins being hanged on some passageway (need to pause to see). When the door open flashes of scenes from the Sacrifical Altar and Repentance are shown, and you will see the back of Masumi. After that, the scene shifted to the time when Masumi ghost returned and strangling Miyako. The last scene flashes shows Sae laughing maniacly. [Film Reel 6] |Location found :- Tachibana, 1F Sliding Screen Room |Contains :- This reel shows a scene where the Woman in Box crawled out from the "box" in Osaka's House. There are two short flashes during the reel, but I can't make out what is it. It doesn't show anything important though. [Film Reel 7] |Location found :- Below Osaka, A Passageway |Contains :- It shows a closet or a door, and then it opened. And a girl crawls out of it. What I suspect is that it shows Chitose Tachibana, who is hiding in one of the closets, climbs out. That's about it for this reel. 3. Ghost/Spirit Analysis. Ending 0 - Bad Ending (Game Over) Requirement - Choose to run away alone when Mayu and Mio got seperated at the final chapter. |Contains :- Mio running away by using the passageway located in Kureha Shrine. Mio says that she's sorry and she can't keep her promise with Mayu. She then goes down the stairways and runs along the underground passageway. A little side note, I notice there are ropes hanging at the top of the passageway, just like those at the passageway that lead to the Sacrifical Altar. Then a voice (Sae's) called out, "Are you leaving me again?". Mio then pauses, and Itsuki's reminder of "Don't look back!" rings out. While Mio is deciding whether to start running again or look back, Mayu's voice said "Mio, didn't we promise?", "Together always..." Mio then turns around, yelling out Mayu's name, and the screen turn Black and White, and Mio sees Sae lunging towards her. The screen white-out then, and it shows Mio, alone in the forest by the river. Mio then calls out for Mayu over and over again. And then she says, "I'll wait... ...forever...". And lastly, the big Game Over screen appear ;) |Analysis :- (Under Construction) 2. Ending 1 - Normal Ending (Crimson Sacrifice Ending) Requirement - Finish the game in either Easy or Normal Mode. *** UNDER CONSTRUCTION *** 3. Ending 2 - Good Ending (Hellish Abyss Ending) Requirement - Finish the game in either Hard or Nightmare Mode. *** UNDER CONSTRUCTION *** 4. Ending 3 - XBox Exclusive Ending *** UNDER CONSTRUCTION *** <------------------------------> | Section 6 - Theories Section | <------------------------------> 1. The Two Camera Theory. There is at least two Camera Obscura in existence, as I can see after scanning the huge amount of documents and memo in this game. It is mentioned that Dr. Aso loaned the Camera Obscura prototype to Mr. Makabe, and then he travel Japan to find ways to complete "his" camera obscura. That means that the camera that Miku had in Fatal Frame "might" be Dr. Aso's camera. It might get left at Himuro Mansion. The big question mark is that how Dr. Aso died. No documents has mentioned about how exactly it happen, and I guess we only have to wait until Fatal Frame 3 (if it were to be announced) to make light in this matter. 2. Crimson Sacrifice Theories. Conditions for Crimson Sacrifice to be a success (in my opinion):- -> The "elder" (in their tradition term, modern term would be the younger one) must strangle the other to death. But sometimes the kill is not done by the "elder" one, and the Veiled Priest would instead help to end it (refer to Violet Diary 2). But the strangling must be done though, and the "younger" must feel pain (maybe the more pain the better, just like the Kusabi ritual). -> After the ritual, a crimson butterfly must appear at the neck of the sacrificed one. -> The Remaining would remain in the human world, while the Crimson Butterfly would flutter down the X, appeasing it. And then later it comes back and flutter around the village (on certain times, not visible at all times) -> The sacrificed one must willing to do the sacrifice. The one who do the sacrifice doesn't matter. Azami is willing to be killed by her sister, Akane. Mayu was willing too, as seen in the Crimson Sacrifice ending. The sacrificed one also must not be disagreeing with the Ritual, or at least don't know what the ritual is about (Azami was too young back then, so she probably don't know what's the nature of the ritual. She only wants to be part of Akane, and Akane to kill her) -> The one who did the sacrifice must have at least some sort of small resentment to the other twins, Akane had a resentment to Azami because she doesn't want to kill, but Azami insisted that she do it. Mayu's was a success because deep in her heart, she resented her sister for being a burden to her since the accident. -> I also think that this Crimson Sacrifice Ritual might also be very similar to the Inner Ritual (The Kusabi). The more the twins suffer, the better the effect would be. The "younger" one would suffer physically (strangling) and the "elder" one would suffer emotionally. As you can see, most of The Remaining suffer alot emotionally, some had their hair turn white, some shunned away from human contact. Akane suffered massively, and Mio too suffer at the Crimson Sacrifice ending, where she is bewildered on what she did AFTER the Butterfly appear. My point of view WHY Itsuki's ritual is a failure. -> Mutsuki probably isn't too willing on the sacrifice, but he did it only to help Yae and Sae to escape from their fate. So the reasons he had to die is vastly different from the two examples of the successful Rituals (Akane and Mio's). He probably doesn't want to die anyway. And Mutsuki disagreed with the Ritual, always thinking there must be another way (same as Itsuki). -> Itsuki is deeply attached to Mutsuki, but does it anyway because he made a pact with Mutsuki to NOT let this happen to Yae and Sae. He probably didn't hold ANY form of resentment or dislike to his twin brother. -> The Ritual may have failed, but the Hellish Abyss DID calm down a little, since the next ritual was done one year later, not instantly (but during that year, the Hellish Abyss grows in power, according to the entries of the Ceremony Master). I think the ritual counted as failure because the butterfly did not appear on Mutsuki. Why the Hellish Abyss calmed down? That is because Itsuki suffered alot emotionally, and had his hair turned white due to it. The Hellish Abyss is probably slight appeased by this. 3. Inner Ritual (or known as Hidden Ritual OR The Kusabi) Theories. The first Kusabi was the Ceremony Master himself, slashing himself, which would be called as the Cutting Ceremony. Why the villager only use Outsider, is unknown. But it mentioned that the more suffering is done, the more effective the Kusabi would be. So maybe they used Outside because of this. Since an outsider doesn't know anything about the village tradition, he/she probably suffer heavily due to mental/emotion and physical stress. This could also be the reason why Seijiro Makabe ritual was a failure. As the documents stated (Ceremony Master section), after Makabe's ritual, the Hellish Abyss calmed down a little, but only a little. That's why they sacrificed Sae so soon, and not to waste any time. Makabe's ritual was a failure because he was actually happy to finally see the Abyss with his own eyes, and throughout his imprisonment, he already found out alot about the village rituals and culture. The Hellish Abyss calmed down a little probably due to the physical suffering that Makabe endured during the Cutting Ceremony, but emotion and mental-wise, Makabe probably didn't suffer at all. That's why he returned from the Abyss during The Repentance, fully corrupted with the Malice from it. There is also another possibility how Makabe's ritual is a failure. As stated by one of the Lazaulite, it mentioned that Makabe realised that he must not look down the pit. So he probably had his eyes close when he was thrown into the pit. 4. Timeline Theories. --> The Azami and Akane's Crimson Sacrifice. Done by the Kiryu Twins, the ceremony was a success. It is unknown when this happen, but one thing for sure that it happened before the Tachibana's turn. It probably happen a few years before, or maybe more. --> The Tachibana's "Altar Twins" Crimson Sacrifice. Done by the Tachibana's Altar Twin. It was a year before the Repentance. The Ritual was a failure, and Itsuki's hair turn white. Although it was a failure, the Hellish is probably somewhat appeased, that why they don't need to do another Crimson Sacrifice soon after that. Itsuki begin his plans on helping Sae and Yae's escape from the village. He also sent a letter to Ryozo for help, probably a few months after the ritual. (Letters don't travel fast back in ancient Japan you know) --> Around one year between Tachibana's Ritual and Makabe's arrival. The Malice coming out from the X got stronger, half of the Mourners are driven mad and jumped into the Abyss. Poor harvest and deaths are increasing in the village. --> Around year 1874 to year 18xx, Arrival of the Folklorist and Assitant. Seijiro Makabe and Ryozo Munakata arrival at the village. It must have happened AFTER 1874 because the edict where the twin who was born later was the younger was already announced, and Makabe is full aware of it. That's why he asked about the village rules on this (refer to Folklorist 12). --> Ryozo Munakata leaves the village. Not too long after their arrival (maybe a few days? Weeks?), Ryozo left the village under instructions of his teacher, Makabe and the village strict tradition to not let outsiders in the village on the day of the ceremony. Makabe had special permission, because the villagers wanted to use him as a Kusabi, but both of them don't know about it. --> Seijiro Makabe is captured. Not long after Ryozo's departure, Makabe is captured by villagers to be used for the Hidden Ceremony. Sae and Yae tried to help him escape before he was captured (that's why he had the key for the side door of Kurosawa house). --> The Hidden Ritual using Seijiro Makabe. After a few days (presumably), Makabe is subjected into the Cutting Ceremony, and later thrown in the Abyss to be made into a Kusabi. The Abyss calmed a little, but still rumbling and growing in power. That's why the Ceremony Master wanted to perform the Crimson Sacrifice so urgently (refer to Ceremony Master's Note 4) --> Sae and Yae Escape. With the help of Itsuki, Sae and Yae escaped during the Hidden Ritual. Itsuki distracted the villager, and Sae and Yae escape using the passageway that runs beneath the Old Tree Site. They made it to the mountains, but Sae slipped from the mountain path. Yae searched for her, but is lost instead. --> Suicide by Itsuki. After aiding Sae and Yae's escape, Itsuki was captured by the villagers. They throw him into the cell at the storehouse. Itsuki later commit suicide by hanging in there. --> Capture of Sae. Sae is captured by the villagers after she fell. She was brought back to the village. Due to the danger of the Abyss bursting out anytime, they decided to use her for the sacrifice, even though a single person is never used before. She found out about Itsuki's suicide before the Ritual, and blamed herself for it. --> Sae's Sacrifice. When Sae was thrown into the Abyss, the seal was broken. It doesn't mean Sae was the reason that it got broken. The seal has already started to weaken since the Tachibana's Ritual, and it happened to break during Sae's Ritual. --> The Repentance. The Malice spilled out of the Abyss. The failed Kusabi and Sae was corrupted by it and appeared out of the Abyss when the Malice poured out. The Malice engulfed the whole village, killing many. It also wiped out the village from visible eye, that's why you can't see it, only a forest shrouded by mist. Some villager killed themself before they're hit by the darkness. The survivors were killed by Sae and the failed Kusabi. This is in fact the Massacre event at the hall in Kurosawa house. --> Yae's Return. Yae, after being lost in the mountain (for hours? days?) finally stumbled back to the Shinto Gate that marks the entrance of the village. But The Repentance has occured, and she can't see the village anymore. Probably due to sadness and shock, she lost all her memories. --> Ryozo Munakata's Return. To fulfill his promise with Itsuki, Ryozo returned to the village on the day of the ceremony. But he only find Yae, crying and apparently lost all her memories. He take Yae under his care, and eventually married her later. --> XX Years after The Repentance. All God's Dam was construction was announced. A geological surveyor is dispatched into the forest. But he went missing. Masumi in fact wandered into the village, and was trapped there. A search party was launched to find him, but after 10 days it was recalled. --> XX Days after Masumi's Dissapearance. Masumi's girlfriend, Miyako believed that her boyfriend is still alive and venture into the forest in search for him. She also wandered into the village. After a period of time trapped, she was reunited with her boyfriend. But when her boyfriend went to the Kurosawa house to investigate a way out, Masumi was slashed to death by the Kusabi. Miyako was later killed by the spirit of Masumi at Osaka's house. --> About one year after "XX Years after The Repentance". Mio and Mayu visits the forest, wanting to see it one last time (it is their secret playground) before it is fully submerged in water after the dam is completed. The game events start from here. --> XX years after The Repentance, after Ryozo and Yae's Marriage. Married couple Ryozo and Yae, had a child, named Mikoto. --> Around 10 years after the above. The Munakata family moved in to Himuro Mansion. Event prior to Fatal Frame unfolds. --> XX Years later, Miku's Story. Miku's story as told in Fatal Frame. To know about it, play Fatal Frame! 5. Fatal Frame and Crimson Butterfly Connection Theories. Well seriously there is not much to tie up the two games together. But first let me start this section with a "sort of" timeline theories between these two great games. --> (Spring) 1837 Kirie met her love (the male visitor). The guy was later mudered by the priests in Himuro Mansion not long after that. (Well Spring is at least confirmed since when Kirie met the guy, they are Sakura flowers failling around, well Sakura is Cherry Blossom by the way, for thsoe who don't know) --> 13 December 1837 The Strangling Ritual involving Kirie failed. Malice poured up. Himuro Mansion members are all wiped out. (This is shown in one of the in-game notes of Fatal Frame) --> After 1874 Seijiro Makabe and Munakata arrived in All God's Village. One year prior to their arrival, the Tachibana "Altar Twins" performed the Crimson Sacrifice. No idea how long ago did the Kiryu Twins performed the Crimson Sacrifice. After the arrival of the Folklorist and his Assistant, the events leading to The Repentance in All God's Village takes place. --> After The Repentance. Yae, being seperated from her sister, returns to the village, but found it missing. Ryozo Munakata (Makabe's assistant) returned to fullfil a promise with Itsuki Tachibana, found Yae all alone crying in front of what supposed to be the village's entrance. Yae apparently lose all her memories by that time. He took Yae under his care, and later married her. --> Around 10 to 20+ years after The Repentance. (May 20th, Year ????) Ryozo Munakata family, which consist of his wife, Yae Munakata and their daughter, Mikoto, went to Himuro Mansion. Munakata chooses to live there while continue his research as a Folklorist, to find out more about the culture and history behind Himuro Mansion. --> June 13th (Year ????) *Same year as above* Mikoto Munakata found the Camera in Himuro Mansion while playing demon tag with her friends. The camera apparently was given by the "girl in a white kimono" (which is the younger incarnation of Kirie when her soul split into two during the Ceremony) --> June 18th (Year ????) *Same year as above* Yae started to be delirous, and started taking photos using the camera all over the mansion. She first started using the camera on June 17th, when the Munakata family decided to take a walk in the mountains nearby. --> June 24th (Year ????) *Same year as above* Mikoto and her friend, who was playing around in Himuro Mansion, disappeared. --> June 27th (Year ????) *Same year as above* Yae committed suicide by hanging under a Sakura tree at the Atrium in Himuro Mansion. She was driven insane by the Camera's power and blames herself for Mikoto's dissapearance. --> Between June 27th and June 30th (Year ????) *Same Year as above* Ryozo was killed by The Malice from Himuro Mansion, possibily by Kirie. --> June 30th (Year ????) *Same year as above* Mikoto was found, alone. She was later adopted by the Hinasaki family, a good friend of Munakata. OK, this wraps up some of the confirmed timeline that had be specified by the in-games notes that is available on both of the games. I'm not going to add timelines that involves the Novelist group, Miku and Mafuyu since those are for Fatal Frame, not Crimson Butterfly. I'm just trying to tie up any possibly connections between the two games. It is unknown when the Amakura twins and the Hinasaki siblings stumbled to their respective "events". It might happen around the same time, or maybe the Amakura is earlier, or Hinasaki is earlier, but nothing is confirmed. OK, enough of this. I'm not here to discuss whether which happen first, but to give any theories on how to tie up the games together. Well, let's start eh? - A - The Repentance and The Calamity. Well, both of this events are very similar with each other, and you can say that it is actually the same thing, only with different names. The Repentace happens when the Crimson Sacrifice (to seal the Hellish Abyss) fails, and the Calamity will happen when then Strangling Ritual failed to seal the Hell's Gate. When either of them happened, it involves Malice pours out, corrupting certain people, killing others directly and mass killing done by the ones who was corrupted. So as you can see, both The Repentance and The Calamity are exactly the same. - B - The Blind Demon Ritual and The Inner/Hidden Ritual (Kusabi). Both of this Ritual are also very similar. Both of them are done prior to the main ritual of sealing. It is just that the theory between these two are different. -| Blind Demon Ritual :- --]Happens on 26th Novemeber, 10 years before the Strangling Ritual. --]Involves a maiden with holy power, and must exceed the age of 7 years, 8 months and 25 days. --]Done by gouging out the eyes with the Blinding Mask. -| Inner/Hidden Ritual (Kusabi) :- --]No specific time on when it happens, random at best. But normally happened when the twins are not prepared yet (cleansing or something similar) for the Crimson Sacrifice. --]Involves an outsider (though the first one who was subjected into this ritual was none other than the first Ceremony Master). It wasn't mentioned whether it must be a male or female. --]Done by submitting the subject to the Cutting Ritual (slashing the body), and later thrown into the Hellish Abyss. Apparently, the person must survive the Cutting Ritual, or else it would be considered a failure. - C - The Strangling Ritual and The Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. Well, both of this ritual is very quite different with each other, but still there are one that is similar. Which is that both of the Ritual needed one person to be sacrificed to a certain gruesome death. -| Strangling Ritual :- --]Happens on 13th December, a holy maiden, cut off from the outside world for 3669 days, will be submitted into the Ritual. --]The subject will be tied at five places, both hands, legs and neck. She will then be servered off. (VERY painful death X-x;;) --]The rope which ties the maiden, soaked by her blood will then be used to seal the Hell Gate. -| Crimson Sacrifice Ritual :- --]Happens on a regular interval. Normally when the Hellish Abyss grumbles and disaster (death, earthquakes, crops) befalls the village. Involve twins bornt into families of the village. --]The elder (according to the village's order of twins) of the twin will strangle the other to death at the Sacrificical Altar. --]When successful, a Crimson Butterfly will appear, and the body of the dead will be thrown into the Hellish Abyss, the Crimson Butterfly will follow suit. Both of the Ritual is performed to seal the Malice from pouring out. The Strangling Ritual involves on the Physical torture side, since the Rope Maiden has no attachment to the world. The Crimson Sacrifice Ritual is focused on the emotional torture, since The Remaining normally suffered heavy emotional loss, and had to suffer throughout his/her life until death. (More coming soon, pending updates) +. Theories Submissions. --> A) Nagare Ryouma's Theory. Well, you and I have the same theory about having 2 camera's invented by Dr. Aso... But one question raise; The camera Miku has possess a piece of the holy mirror, right? And the holy mirror was only shattered into 4-5 pieces due to Kirie's ritual failed... So if that's the case, then that particular camera could only be made after that incident. So does that mean Dr. Aso actually went to the Himuro Mansion when Kirie was doing all the haunting? Ryozo and Yae moved in shortly after that particular incident and that's when Mikoto found the camera.... So there might be possibility that our theory is right... If Ryozo and Yae was able to live 'peacefully' for quite sometime in the Himuro Mansion, then that means there is a possibility that: It's obvious that Dr. Aso knew about the holy mirror and it's location. Not to mention about the Himuro ritual.... So he went to Himuro Mansion and found one piece of the mirror in the outskirts of the mansion. He, with some curiousity decided to explore the mansion but end up not going in for some particular reason. Knowing about the holy mirror from rumours and research, he decided to go and check on the Himuro Mansion only to find the place deserted. With his consent he decided to go and check upon the mansion and found himself one of the pieces of the holy mirror and stays at the mansion to further on his investigation while making the camera. He later ended up being killed by Kirie. And as time goes by, Ryozo and Yae moved in and Mikito finds the camera thanks to young Kirie. Knowing about the existence and the power of the holy mirror, Dr. Aso decides to check upon Himuro Mansion to investigate about it. He ends up finding a piece of the holy mirror and manages to get out of the mansion. He finished the camera and decides to go back to the mansion due to the images he sees (rope marks) on his limbs. Witout knowing the meaning of it, he goes back to find out more and ended up getting killed by Kirie. Well, I think 'II' is the better one out of the 3, because it makes more sense but then again that's part of the speculation. So what do you think? --> B) Bruce Wafful's Theory. (egochek@yahoo.com) This is Bruce's theory that the shrine ceremony in both Fatal Frame games are the exact same ritual. Well you can say this is a theory about the connections between Fatal Frame and Crimson Butterfly. [Altar] In the beginning of Crimson Butterflies, Mio and Mayu stumble upon the altar with the five pillars closed off by a sacred rope. The same altar can be found in Fatal Frame at the place of sacrifice for the rope shrine maiden. Also this is the place where we see the Crimson Butterflies for the first time, showing that this altar has a definite connection with the ceremony. There is another instance that I thought to mention. After Mio grabs the Camera Obscura for the first time we are treated to a latent psychic image of Mr. Makabe Seijiro trying out the Camera Obscura on a pillar of rock wrapped in sacred rope, taking a picture of several open hands coming towards him. I seem to remember this pillar (or ones like it) In Fatal Frame. Also the hands reaching for him were definitely included in Fatal Frame. [Camera Obscura] Though it escapes me if it was called such in the first game, there is obviously more than one camera. This suggests that Mr. Munakata probably caught up with and told Dr. Aso that his camera worked and had him create another, if not several more. this explains the appearance of the camera in Fatal Frame. Whether they all contain mirrors I don't know. [Holy Mirror] It is worth mentioning the holy mirrors in this case. The one mirror we see enshrined at the temple on the hill may in fact be one of the "False Mirrors" we heard of in the first game, which could explain its failure to keep the village safe from the ravages of the "gate to hell". [Masks] In the room were the ritual book puzzle is located there are Tengu and other "Scary looking masks" lined on the wall. What this has to do with the twin shrine ceremony I do not know but in Fatal Frame it played a big part, and they were also possessed by the Ceremony Master in that story as well. These and other ceremony tools can be found in both games. [Massacre] Though I'm not sure how this operated in Crimson Butterflies, there seems to have been a massacre of some kind in both games. The Ceremony Master in Fatal Frame killed all of his priests, but in Crimson Butterflies Sae kills everyone in sight. The ceremony master was possessed after the failed ceremony in Fatal Frame, but what about Sae? My theory is that for the ceremony master was alive to kill those priests that Sae was alive as well. Bear with me, what if, in the haste after Yae's disappearance, the monks and ceremony master were in a hurry to get things over with in the sacrifice that Sae actually hadn't died. The hellgate was offended by a live sacrifice and spat her back out. Now with her being the closest one to the center of the malice she comes back (along with the Kusabi, who might not have been all that dead yet as well) to kill with a prejudice. Also the explanation for both of these would be for the closeness to the Hellgate acting upon said victims. [Sadocism] The goal of both ceremonies is to inflict maximum pain on the sacrificed. This is evident in the rope ceremony carried out by the cult in Fatal Frame, I mean, Crap man, that has got to hurt. The peculiarity with the twin shrine maiden ceremony is the fact that most of the pain felt is emotional, except in the case of the Kusabi. Whatever is the case I believe that the ceremony can be carried out in any number of ways, so long as there is a lot of pain, usually resulting in death, and then proof to the Hellgate that said pain has taken place, for example: Bloody ropes or a dead body. The masters of both ceremonies carried out whatever seemed to work using an "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, until it became highly stylized and then tradition. [Origin] Though the origin of the ceremonies is not explained they do share a common purpose, maybe when the hellgate(s) sprung up in the towns a person who got the ceremony right the first time traveled all around ridding Japan of walking ghosts. perhaps the two places share a common background. Maybe the Gods themselves taught humanity how to deal with the problem. Who knows? --> C) revsm1@netzero.com Theory. (revsm1@netzero.com) Some new theories sumbitted. Provides some new elements that I never thought of earlier. [Itsuki's Connection] Itsuki seems to be very close to Yae and Sae. He seems as if he's in love with Sae. Though they were related way back I think. Anyway, in many guides I've read, many people haven't been stumped much, because I found out that Itsuki will help you with each task you need to fulfil, and no one mentions about that. If I was stumped, I just paid him a visit if I happened have escaped from a house. Why is he so willing to help Mio throughout the game? Did he like Yae instead? Because we all know that Mio is the doppleganger for Yae. They have the same attitude. There's not much to go on. [The Cleansing] I believe that the Cleansing is for the purpose of weakening one of the twins There’s always a weaker twin. If one of them is weak, then the other will be reluctant to escape, thus remaining at the village. In turn, this will leave a mark on the stronger twin’s mind that it is their sibling's fault that they cannot escape. A glimmer of... hate, not hope. But I think they figured it out a little too late. And a litle too close to the ritual, it just makes them want to do away with their sibling, lol! Itsuki obviously loved his brother, but was too intelligent to just remain. But he didn’t want to have his two friends go through with it for them. What a dilemma for him. [Yae and Sae’s Cleansing] As far as I know, the Cleansing has always happened, and I think that the twin’s Cleansing didn’t weaken Sae so much because the boy who carried out the Cleansing had a crush on Yae. Since Sae was her sister, he probably didn't want to weaken her too much. And part of him wanted them to get away. Another part wanted them to stay. Obviously, Sae is strong enough to run away through the forest, though a bit slow and clumsy, right? It alo says that the boy was “Unrequited￾E Did he feel betrayed that Yae could not return his love when she fled the village before the ritual? He was probably surprised that Sae returned without her, and hoped along with Sae that she would return, thus he became a a ghost, labeled “Unrequited.￾EI really believe he is one with “Cleanser.￾E <----------------------------------------> | Section 7 - Game Mysteries Discussions | <----------------------------------------> [Mystery #001] |The Mirror in Kureha Shrine :- Is it one of the 5 mirrors that surrounds Himuro Mansion? But I ruled this out since The Calamity event in Himuro happens way before The Repentance in All God's Village, therefore if it were the same mirror is should be smashed. But no doubt that The Mirror in Kureha shrine might be very similar to the mirrors in Himuro Mansion. |Futher Discussions :- (Submissions needed!) [Mystery #002] |The Tsuchihara Family :- No notes or whatsoever exist to explain about this particular family in All God's Village. From what I know, this family must be as powerful as the Osaka, Kiryu and Tachibana family. This is because their crest is one of the 4 that seals the passageway that runs below the Old Tree Site. This brings to my speculation that the Tsuchihara family is either banished or died off. There is a possibility that the Twins who escaped using the Underground Passageway that runs from the Kureha Shrine to the Forest (passing by the Old Tree Site) is done by the Tsuchihara family twins, the Ceremony Master of that time was furious, sealed off the passageway and banished the family away from the village. But this is just pure speculation on my part. |Futher Discussions :- --> Submitted by "Beth Green" (kirie_rsm@hotmail.com) Do you recall at the beginning of the game when you first enter the Osaka house and seeing the split second picture of two twins hanging in the hallway? Someone had mentioned that Tecmo originally had intended on adding another twin story to the game aside from the Kiryu, Tachibana, and Kurosawa twins. This however got scrapped, but the scene was still left in the game. I'm thinking the Tsuchihara twins were the ones hanging in the opening cutscene in Osaka house. So, they left in the scene and the crest figuring no one would question it but didn't even mention the family's connection or history in the game. --> Submitted by revsm1@netzero.com I was wondering about the Tsuchihara family’s house. Where is it? Perhaps it is one of the hollow houses in which the player can see right through it. I believe that the Tsuchihara Twins tried to escape, but were the ones ambushed in the cave and killed. Maybe they were hung by the Osakas? [Mystery #003] |The Misono Hill Altar :- No idea on what exactly this altar is for? The ropes surrounding it and the "pillars" which surrounds it looks very similar to those which is found Fatal Frame. And what's the purpose of the heavy stone which is supposed to cover some sort of great hole at the middle of the altar? Would it possible that the Hellish Abyss is located directly below it? |Futher Discussions :- --> Submitted by revsm1@netzero.com I think the stone on Misono Hill is indeed there to cover up the Hellish Abyss. I think that in order to keep villagers from accidentally gazing into the Hellish Abyss, they had to block it up like that. Or worse, they didn’t want villagers to fall in there! Plus, if it were located a little beyond the abyss, or even a long way from it, twins could escape through there. After all, who’s to say that it doesn’t lead to a path connecting to the Tree? It could help one escape. [Mystery #004] |Wells at All God's Village :- I was surprised with the number of well that appear around the village. And it is also said in the game that the wells are connected with an underground network of caverns. I am sure that it is not connected by the Undergroud Passageway that you gain access in the game, so what lies under the well? |Futher Discussions :- --> Submitted by "Beth Green" (kirie_rsm@hotmail.com) I do recall at the end when you're in the cavern hallway just before the door leading you into the long (EXTREMELY long...lol) hallway to the abyss that the angle of the camera changes to above you. It looks like a grate is above your head with moonlight shining through it. Could this be a well right over Mio's head as she passes under it? --> Submitted by revsm1@netzero.com I think that, in addition to Beth Green’s suggestion, some people may have tried to escape the village through these holes. And they built wells over them to see if people were down there. Since there was no water (wells are for water aren’t they?), the villagers probably built the wells to deceive ordinary outsiders. [Mystery #005] |Storeroom with writings, 2nd Floor of Tachibana House :- Well when entering the room for the first time, many writing (in Japanese, "Tasukete") HELP! are written over and over again on the walls behind a chest. There is also an eerie voice accompany it if you visit it at certain parts of the game. The chest which is the storeroom is "held by a powerful force" throughout the whole game, and I don't think it can be opened. So what is inside there? The eerie voice sounds very familar to Chitose, so maybe it is something Chitose held important is inside it? |Futher Discussions :- --> Submitted by "Beth Green" (kirie_rsm@hotmail.com) This is the room where Chitose hid when the Repentence came. She died inside the closet because she was frightened, and refused to leave out of fear of the ghosts now haunting the place. This is why we see "HELP!" plastered all over the walls. I'm guessing also that she hid inside that box, and her spirit holds it closed as it did in life to keep anyone from getting her... [Mystery #006] |Beyond the Hellish Abyss Chamber :- With reference to the map, it shows that they chamber which has the Hellish Abyss (place where you fight Sae in Chapter Zero) still extends beyond the torches at the rear of the chamber. Well, what exactly lies there? Does it connect to another village? Another place? |Futher Discussions :- --> Submitted by revsm1@netzero.com I believe beyond there would be the limits of All God’s Village, meaning an escape route. If the Hellish Abyss were beneath Misono Hill, the path beyond should go much farther than that. But, I don’t believe anyone has ever been able to reach there. Sae never actually goes past the candles back there either when you fight her, does she? Maybe the Tsuchihara twins got past there, but were caught and hung? They could have escaped multiple ways. And, anyway, like being connected to another village, how close are the mountains to the All God’s Village? It could even lead to Himuro Mansion. But I could also be wrong, lol. [Mystery #007] |Covered objects throughout the village :- When exploring the village, especially indoors, there is alot of stuff which is covered using cloths. Some items had feet protuding from below, some looks very big and impressive. But if examined nothing important is told. |Futher Discussions :- --> Submitted by revsm1@netzero.com The covered objects with feet are sickly persons who wrapped up to escape the freezing cold of the Repentance. They were so ill that they didn’t even try to move, and now they are stuck in an eternal limbo between Oblivion and Nirvana. Deep huh? The big ones are probably antiques! These guys did have too much stuff, and some of it ended up in the underground caves anyway, lol! [Mystery #008] |Osaka Twins :- In one of the cutscenes of the game, you will notice a pair of twins being hanged at a corridor. It is not mentioned in the game who the twins are. |Futher Discussions :- It is rumoured amongst the forums and sites that this pair of twins actually been scrapped off by Tecmo from the final product. In the beginning, Tecmo decided to have one more pair of Twins besides the current available for the game, but for some reason scrap it off before implementing it. But all of this are just a rumour anyways.
