Introduction ---------------- Welcome to the Final Fantasy X Magus Sisters Guide. The main focus of this guide is the behavior of the Magus Sisters in battle. However, since this is a general information guide, there are also instructions on how to obtain the Magus Sisters (in Part II). The in-battle information starts in Part III, which has lists of the Sisters' battle abilities and explanations of the abilities that are unique to them. Unfortunately, you do not have direct control over the Sisters' actions. The "commands" that you give them work a bit differently from the normal procedure; any given command has at least two possible results. Each command's possible results are listed in Part IV, and the methods that the game uses to choose the Sisters' actions are in Part V. Also in Part V is a section on how the Sisters' Overdrive meters charge. -------------------------- II. Obtaining the Sisters -------------------------- The Magus Sisters are at Remiem Temple, which is southeast of the main area of the Calm Lands. The exit from the Calm Lands to Remiem is accessible by chocobo only. There is a woman in the Calm Lands who will give a chocobo to you, but only after you find her and pass a chocobo training exercise. If you have not trained a chocobo, she will be in the northwest part of the Calm Lands. If you have trained to her, she will be close to wherever you enter the Calm Lands. (For example, if you enter by airship, she is only a few paces south of the Calm Lands - Central Save Sphere.) Once you are on a chocobo, go to the southeast corner of the Calm Lands. (Ride up the slope towards the Macalania Forest exit, but instead of turning south to leave the area, continue east.) There is a chocobo feather on the ground; examine it to jump to the hidden exit. As with any Calm Lands exit, the game forces you to dismount before you leave the area. Now, you are at the outside of Remiem Temple. Simply walk across the bridge and enter the temple. The interior of Remiem Temple holds just two things of interest: Summoner Belgemine in the center and the Chamber of the Fayth of the Magus Sisters on the right side. With Belgemine, you can fight versions of the aeons which you have obtained. The door to the Chamber of the Fayth is sealed; you cannot enter. To break the seal, you need the following: 1) Yojimbo (Aeon) 2) Anima (Aeon) 3) Blossom Crown (Key Item) 4) Flower Scepter (Key Item) Here is how to get them all: Yojimbo - Obtain him at the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth (a.k.a. Sunken Cave). To enter the cavern, go to "Calm Lands - Near Bridge" and take the path that goes to the right of and under the second bridge. At one end of the path is the cavern. The cavern is mostly linear; about halfway through, you will fight Yojimbo, and at the very end, there is a teleport pad that transports you to treasure rooms and the Chamber of Yojimbo's Fayth. You must pay to get Yojimbo's services; the amount depends on how you answer the first question that the fayth asks (the third choice is the best) and how well you negotiate with him. You do not have to pay his initial asking price... Anima - Obtain her at Baaj Temple. In order to open the Chamber of Anima's Fayth, get the Destruction Sphere treasures from all six Cloisters of Trials: Besaid, Kilika, Djose, Macalania, Bevelle, and Zanarkand. If you missed any of the first four, talk to Maester Mika at the Highbridge (after getting control the Airship) so that you can re-enter the temples (you must talk to him to advance the storyline anyway). Bevelle's treasure is acquired in a forced event near the end of the Trials. There is no way to miss it (barring cheat devices), so do not worry about not being able to return there later. Zanarkand's treasure requires a return visit. (Solve the new puzzle in the Zanarkand Trials by activating all the white squares.) Getting to Baaj Temple requires the Airship. It is a hidden location -- choose Search from the navigation menu, point the cursor in the range of (X: 69-75, Y: 33-38) and "confirm" (press the X button in the North American version) to put it in the destination list. Proceed to the end of the walkway, jump in the water, and approach the underwater door. Defeat the boss (TIP: Do not kill him while he has one of your party swallowed!) and enter the passageway. Inside the next room, there are six statues that represent the Cloisters of Trials in the game. They must all be activated in order to open the Chamber of Anima's Fayth, but they can only be activated after the Destruction Sphere treasures of their corresponding Trials have been acquired. The statues are arranged as follows: Besaid Bevelle Macalania Djose Zanarkand Kilika After all the Destruction Sphere treasures have been obtained, simply activate the statues and enter the fayth chamber. You have Anima. Blossom Crown - Obtain it at the Monster Arena. Capture one of each monster in the Mt. Gagazet list, and the monster trainer will give it to you as a prize. If you have never heard of monster capturing, go to the east exit of the Calm Lands (not the Gagazet exit in the northeast; it is the one in the middle of the eastern wall). The Monster Arena is there. Talk to the man there to get started. (Note: The first task that the monster trainer gives you is to capture each monster in the Calm Lands. He will NOT give you *any* prizes until that is done, so you really need all the monsters from the Calm Lands and Gagazet to get the Blossom Crown. Also, different monsters appear in different areas of Gagazet. You must go to the Mountain Trail, the Cave/Z.Ruins, and underwater to find them all.) Flower Scepter - Obtain it at Remiem Temple. Defeat Belgemine's Bahamut, and she will give it to you as a prize. Directions to Remiem are above. Once you have both aeons and both Key Items, you can open the door in Remiem. Go inside and the Magus Sisters are yours! -------------------------- III. The Sisters' Arsenal -------------------------- Below are lists of all the actions that each Sister can perform, grouped by categories. The player does not have exact control of what the Sisters do. Instead, the player "commands" a Sister to use a type of attack or spell, and she may or may not comply (see Parts IV and V for more details). ********************** A. Cindy's Abilities ********************** Attack White Magic: Cure, Cura, Curaga, Life, Full-Life, Auto-Life Black Magic: Drain, Osmose, Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga, Waterga, Flare, Ultima Special: Pray Aeon Special: Camisade (physical attack with 21/16 of normal 'Attack' power; targets one enemy) ********************** B. Sandy's Abilities ********************** Attack White Magic: Cure, Cura, Curaga, Haste, Protect, Shell, Reflect Aeon Special: Razzia (physical attack with 21/16 of normal 'Attack' power; targets one enemy) Other: NulAll (adds NulBlaze, NulFrost, NulShock, and NulTide; targets all allies) ********************** C. Mindy's Abilities ********************** Attack Black Magic: Drain, Osmose, Fira, Blizzaga, Thundara, Watera, Bio, Death, Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga, Waterga, Flare Special: Lancet, Doublecast Aeon Special: Passado (physical attack consisting of 15 hits, each with 1/8 of normal 'Attack' power; targets one enemy) *********************************************** D. The Magus Sisters' Overdrive, Delta Attack *********************************************** Delta Attack can only be used when all three of the Magus Sisters' Overdrive meters are full, but any of the Sisters can trigger it (with the command "Combine powers!"). Delta Attack is not the same in every release of Final Fantasy X; there are two versions of the Overdrive. The first is present in the North American and original Japanese versions of FFX, and the second is in the International and PAL versions of FFX. North American and original Japanese versions of FFX: Delta Attack is Strength-based, but it is neither physical nor magical. It consists of one hit with 375% of the power of 'Attack', and it targets all enemies. It can be triggered by any Sister (once all three have full Overdrive meters and are not in Curse status), but Cindy's Strength determines its base damage. The maximum total damage possible (per target) is 99999. International and PAL versions of FFX: Delta Attack is Strength-based, but it is neither physical nor magical. It consists of six hits, each with 62.5% of the power of 'Attack', and it targets all enemies. It can be triggered by any Sister (once all three have full Overdrive meters and are not in Curse status), but Cindy's Strength determines its base damage. The maximum total damage possible (per target) is 599994 (but the damage will fall well short of this mark against enemies with high Defense). Attack, Camisade, Razzia, Passado, and Delta Attack (both versions) can make critical hits. There is one other action that any Sister can do (not counting Dismiss, which is covered in "Commands" below)... ************************ E. "Taking a break..." ************************ "Taking a break..." means just that; the Sister does absolutely nothing (she does not even Defend against physical attacks). Her turn is completely wasted. ------------- IV. Commands ------------- As stated in Part III, the Magus Sisters' actions are not directly controlled by the player. In place of direct and precise commands are indirect broad statements (such as "Do as you will" and "Help each other") that give the Sisters a choice from a group of attacks. This section contains all the Magus Sisters' commands with their in-game descriptions (based on the North American version), as well the range of actions that the Sisters may perform with each command. Only general behavior is covered here; specifics on how the game decides which action is chosen are in Part V, Advanced Command Mechanics. "Do as you will." (All) -- Let the Sisters do as they please. As the name states, this command leaves the sisters to do whatever they want, without any particular direction. Cindy may use Auto-Life, Full-Life, Life, Attack, Flare, or any of the "-ga" elemental spells. She may also "take a break". Sandy really likes to cast Reflect on Cindy (in order to set up Mindy's magic spells). She may also use Razzia or Attack with this command. DO NOT use this command on Sandy if you want the best chance to get Mindy's Passado. Mindy may cast (or even Doublecast) various black magic spells, but only if Cindy has Reflect (all of Mindy's magic from this command will target Cindy). She may also use Passado or Attack, or she may just "take a break". "One more time." (All) -- Ask the Sisters to repeat their previous action. The description is accurate; this tells the Sister to repeat her last action. She will comply...sometimes. Other times, she may use either her Aeon Special or a regular Attack. (Mindy may also take a break.) Cindy follows this command the best, but by default, each Sister has a better than 50% chance of doing whatever she did last. Note that for "last action" copying, Delta Attack and "Taking a break..." do not count, and other restrictions may apply (for example, Cindy cannot cast Flare if she does not have enough MP). "Fight!" (All) -- Ask the Sisters to physically attack. Regardless of which Sister is being commanded, she can only do three things here: her Aeon Special attack, a normal Attack, or "Taking a break..." "Go, go!" (Cindy) -- Ask [Cindy] to use offensive magic and skills. Interestingly enough, the very first spell that Cindy may do from this command is Pray (the chance she has of Praying depends on the percentage of her maximum HP she has lost). Failing that, she may use Osmose, Attack, Ultima, Flare, Drain, -ga black magic, Camisade, or "Taking a break..." "Help each other!" (Cindy) -- Ask [Cindy] to use healing magic on [her sisters]. This is Cindy's healing command, and the only way to access her Cure series (besides "One more time."). Cindy may cast Full-Life, Life, Auto-Life, Cure, Cura, or Curaga; she may use Camisade or "Taking a break..." as well. There are safeguards against wasting MP (along with the turn) in place: - Cindy will not use Life/Full-Life if neither of her sisters has the KO status. - She will not use Auto-Life if all three Sisters have Auto-Life. (Both of the above also apply for the same spells in "Do as you will.") - She will not use Cure/Cura/Curaga if both of her sisters are at full HP. (She never casts Cure/Cura/Curaga on herself.) Use this command wisely. "Defense!" (Sandy) -- Ask [Sandy] to use defensive and support magic. Sandy may use the following: Shell, Protect, Haste, NulAll, Cure, Cura, Curaga, Razzia, Attack, or "Taking a break..." Cure/Cura/Curaga usage is dependent on her sisters not being at full HP (Sandy never casts them on herself, so her HP is not a factor). Note that Reflect is NOT among the spells that Sandy may cast from this command. "Do as you will" is the only command that can produce Reflect. "Are you alright?" (Mindy) -- Ask [Mindy] to absorb HP and MP from the enemy. This one is quite straightforward; Mindy may only use Lancet, Drain, Osmose, or "Taking a break..." Obviously, if you are trying to get Passado, you should stay away from this command. "Combine powers!" (All) -- Ask the Sisters for their combined attack. If all three Sisters have their Overdrive meters full and they are not in Curse status, this command appears on each Sister's turn. There are two possible outcomes from this command: Delta Attack and "Taking a break..." (the latter is extremely rare, however; the chances of of it occurring are usually at or near zero). "Dismiss" (All) -- Send aeon away. This works just like any other aeon's Dismiss command; the Sisters leave the battlefield and the characters take over again. ------------------------------ V. Advanced Command Mechanics ------------------------------ ******************** A. Attack Decision ******************** This portion of the guide contains the Magus Sisters' attack decision algorithms for all commands (except Dismiss), as well as the appearance rates/conditions of each command. Both were translated from DigiCube's Final Fantasy X Ultimania Omega guide. In order to help you understand the information in this section, definitions of some terms and a sample command algorithm are provided below. MOTIVATION Motivation is the numerical measure of the relationship between Yuna and one of the Magus Sisters. Each Sister has a Motivation value. The minimum possible Motivation is 0, and the maximum is 100. At the start of battle, each Sister's Motivation is set to 50. Generally, Motivation increases whenever a Sister performs an action, and it decreases only with "Taking a break..." (see the next section for more details on Motivation changes). Motivation is one of the major factors in the attack choice process. In the Command Algorithm Listings below, Motivation is denoted by "M", and it always refers to the Motivation of the Sister being commanded (e.g. in any of Cindy's Command Algorithm Listings, "M" means Cindy's Motivation). SAMPLE COMMAND LISTING The example command is Sandy's "Do as you will." Explanations of each term are below the listing. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ | | | Command: "Do as you will." | | Appearance Rate: Always appears | | | | Result: | | | | 1) If Cindy does not have Reflect, then | | (M+200)/256: Reflect (on Cindy) | | | | 2) 1/2: Razzia | | | | 3) Attack | | | \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Command - This is the actual command as it appears in the Sister's Command Menu in-game. Appearance Rate - This is the chance of the command appearing in the Sister's Command Menu on any given turn. The entry here may be "Always" (if the command appears every turn), a numerical value between 0 and 1, or a conditional statement (which appears with either of the first two). Result - This is the attack choice algorithm. 1), 2), 3) - These denote the steps in the attack choice algorithm. Each step may lead to an action; most have conditions that must be met in order for the action to occur (the last step never does). If the conditions for an action are met, the attack choice process ends and the action is performed. Otherwise, the process goes to the next step. (number): [action] - The Sister has a (number) chance of performing [action]. ("1/2: Razzia" in the example above means that Sandy has a 1/2 chance of performing Razzia.) Reading the Result - Assume that it is Sandy's turn, and you select "Do as you will." Following the example, the first thing the game checks is this: 1) If Cindy does not have Reflect, then (M+200)/256: Reflect (on Cindy) This statement may be read as: "If Cindy does not have the Reflect or KO statuses, then there is a ((Motivation+200)/256) probability of Sandy casting Reflect on Cindy." In order for the action to occur, Cindy must not have Reflect (or KO*), the random (M+200)/256 test must be passed, and Sandy must have enough MP to cast Reflect. If any of those conditions are not met (Cindy has Reflect or KO, the random chance test fails, or Sandy does not have enough MP to cast Reflect), then the process goes to the next step. If Reflect is to be cast, then the decision process stops here. Assume that it is not, and the game checks the next step... 2) 1/2: Razzia This is simpler; there is a 1/2 chance of Sandy performing Razzia. If that fails... 3) Attack ...Sandy will Attack. The last line of every Command Result is always something that occurs with 100% certainty (there is no "next line" to which the process can go). Unfortunately, "Taking a break..." is more common on the last line than Attack. * - An action cannot be performed if all of its eligible targets are inactive. Overdrive and Motivation Changes ************************************* NOTE: Unlike characters' Overdrive meters, which charge in increments of 1/100 (or 1%), the Magus Sisters' Overdrive meters charge in increments of 1/20 (or 5%). Therefore, all Overdrive meter charges in this section are expressed in units of 1/20th of the full meter. Generally, a Sister's Overdrive meter charges when either of the following occurs: 1) The Sister is attacked 2) The Sister performs an action When a Sister is attacked, the formula that is most often used to determine her OD meter charge is this: Charge = max(1, [Damage / MaxHP * 20]) This applies even if the Sister evades the attack (in which case "Damage" is the amount of damage that the attack would have caused if it had hit). Some attacks may have additional restrictions. For example, the maximum charge that a Sister can get from Fenrir's "Fangs of Chaos" is 2 (even though the base damage is 93.75% of the target's current HP). The charts below contain the Motivation changes and Overdrive meter charges for each of the Sisters' actions. The actions are grouped by Sister and by command. Command/Action combinations are unique; the effects of an action (like Attack) are not the same in every command or for each Sister. Motivation/OD meter changes in the charts are subject to the "Special Rules" listed after the charts. _______________________________________________________ | CINDY | attack is evaded, or if its damage is nullified or absorbed, then the Overdrive meter charge from the attack decreases by 1 (minimum charge 0). However, if the attack occurs immediately after the command "One more time", then the Sister's Motivation decreases by 6, and her Overdrive meter does not charge. (2) - When Mindy uses Doublecast, the first spell charges her Overdrive meter one unit only (subject to Rule 1 above), and it does not change her Motivation. The second spell affects her OD meter and Motivation at its normal rates (subject to Rule 1). (3) - There are three Motivation/Overdrive meter bonuses associated with the Sisters' Dismiss command. The first is awarded during the Dismiss animation to the Sister who receives the command to Dismiss (i.e. the one whose turn it is at the time). The second bonus is awarded to Cindy after the Dismiss animation ends. The last bonus is also for Cindy, and it is awarded when the Sisters are summoned back into a battle after being Dismissed. In all three cases, the amounts of the bonuses are equal to those that the Sister received for her last action. (Exceptions Found: 'Attack' only grants a Dismissal bonus of 1 to the OD meter. Mindy's Dismissal OD meter bonuses are decreased by 1 (unless her last action charged her OD meter by 0 or 1).) Miscellaneous Findings (These are things that I have observed through play testing, but I have not proven them yet.) Curse status: In addition to disabling the "Combine powers!" command, Curse appears to stop the Sisters' OD meter charge for taking damage, as well as decrease the charge for performing actions by 1. Its effect on Dismissal OD meter charges has not been tested yet. Delta Attack: Delta Attack can increase Cindy's OD meter (after it empties) by 0, 1, or 2. ------------------ VI. Administrivia ------------------ ******************** A. Version History ******************** 1.00 (24 July 2004, 44.6 KB): This is the first version of the Magus Sisters Guide released to the public. It includes information on obtaining the Sisters, lists of their battle actions and which commands may result in them, and the mechanics of the Sisters' attack choices and Overdrive meters. In a later version of this guide, I plan to add a brief note on the Magus Sisters' first appearance as bosses in Final Fantasy IV. ************ B. Credits ************ Ronald W. Davis II ("jobber2022497") - Wrote and compiled information for the guide (including translating text from Japanese guidebooks). Sources from which some of the information in this guide was taken were the following: Final Fantasy X Ultimania Omega (DigiCube/Studio BentStuff): This is the original source of the Command Listings, OD/Motivation change charts, and Special Rules of OD/Motivation change in Part V of this guide. The "International" section of Ultimania Omega was used to get the Power value of Delta Attack in FFX International. Final Fantasy X Battle Ultimania (DigiCube/Studio BentStuff): This guide provided lists of the Sisters' attacks (which was used to confirm completeness of the section "The Sisters' Arsenal"), and the Power values of Razzia, Passado, and Camisade. Final Fantasy X - The Knowledge Within (Damir Kolar ("Split Infinity")): The Search location of Omega Ruins was borrowed from this guide. ************************ C.
