After seeing an influx of multiple topics asking the same questions being posted on the GFAQs forums, I decided to compile the information I've gathered on battle to contribute to the Grandia 3 community. Any corrections and suggestions are welcome. See the contact information section to reach me. Please note that this FAQ assumes that you have a general understanding of the game. After all, that's what the manual's for. Apart from that, I hope this FAQ will answer the majority of the questions that people ask. Credit goes to Ruby Sapphire of the GameFAQs forums for the answers to the following questions. How many characters do you get? 7 characters. 4 are permanent and 3 are temporary. The temporary characters are Miranda, Alonso, and Hect. What is the gameplay like? It is a semi real-time turn based system. A circular gauge appears on the top left corner of the screen which shows each character's picture, including the enemies. They all move towards a line called the COM line (Command Line) and this is where the player can input commands to that character, which are: Combo - Perform a two hit (or more) attack on an enemy. Critical - Perform a single strong attack on an enemy. (Cancel property.) Magic - Consume MP to cast a magic spell. Special Move - Consume SP to use a special move. Item - Use an item. Defend - Defend from attack, taking less damage. A player has the option to move the character to specified places on the battlefield when used. Flee - Run away from battle. Strategy - Choose from a set of AI options to set on specific characters. This will allow the computer to control that character instead of the player. Use Weapon - At times, weapons can be used in battle to cast various effects. Once an action has been taken, they move along a small red portion of the gauge towards the ACT line, where they execute the command given. After that, the character goes back to the beginning of the gauge and restarts the whole process. The system adds a bit of strategy to it with 'Canceling'. Each character can perform a Critical, which inflicts a single hit of high damage to an enemy. If the enemy happens to be on the ACT line while being hit with the critical, the enemy's action will be cancelled and will be knocked back to the beginning of the gauge. Each character also has a Special Skill that has cancelling properties in them and is usually stronger than the usual Critical command. How do I do Aerial Combos? There are several ways to initiate an Aerial Combo. 1. Critical the enemy when the enemy is on the red portion of the gauge. This will send the enemy flying to the air. The player should follow up with another character with either the 'Combo' command or the 'Critical' command to start the Aerial Combo. The combo can be continued with another character as long as the enemy is still in the air and the other character is ready to act. 2. Critical the enemy when the enemy is in the middle of being attacked by another character's combo. This will send the enemy flying. 3. Enemies can also be sent to the air if they are inflicted with various ailments, such as paralysis or sleep. 4. Some magic spells can also send the enemies to the air. Magic such as Crackle and Tremor have this effect. Aerial Combos can help rack up more gold or increase the chances of getting an item from the enemy if the enemy is defeated through an Aerial Finish. How does SP regenerate? SP regenerates in battle over time. SP also regenerates when a character Attacks enemies or takes damage from enemies. SP can also be restored with various SP restoration items. How do Mana Eggs and Skill Books work? For Mana Eggs, you equip them and buy spells for them. I'll use an Ether Egg (The most powerful Mana Egg) as an example. An Ether Egg boosts all elemental categories by three meters, which I believe is the max power. Which means, spells like Galactic Bang (Fire), Meteor Strike (Earth), Astraea Zap (Wind), Howlnado (Wind), Alhealer (Water), and Absolute Zero (Water) will take less time to charge. Skill books are the same. You equip them and buy skills for them. I'll use a Master Book (Most powerful Skill Book) as an example. The Master Book raises all skill categories by three meters. All of the skills will have a better chance of activating or skills that affect stats increase more. Sections 5 and 6 of this FAQ will display more information regarding these. What is Mana Egg Fusion and how do you fuse them? Mana Egg Fusion is the combining of two Mana Eggs into a different Mana Egg. Through fusion, new Mana Eggs are formed and can contain various spells for the player to 'extract' and equip on characters. A player can start fusing them in the Baccula Settlement. Section 5 of this FAQ will cover each of the eggs in greater detail. What is extraction? Extraction is used in the Magic Shop and Skill Shop. In the Magic Shop, the player can extract spells from a Mana Egg. However, the Mana Egg used for extraction will be destroyed. The same thing applies for the Skill Shop. The player can extract skills from a Skill Book but it will be destroyed in the process. How do you get more Special Moves? Section 4 of this FAQ has a detailed list regarding special moves acquisition. What are Secret Methods and what do the letters mean? The letters that appear next to the Special Move are: P - Increases Power/Effectiveness/Duration of a Special Move. (First Level.) S - Decreases charge time of a Special Move. P - Increases Power/Effectiveness/Duration of a Special Move. (Second Level.) R - Decreases recovery time of a Special Move. P - Increases Power/Effectiveness/Duration of a Special Move. (Max Level.) Secret Methods are learned for Special Moves. They help strengthen the special moves of each character. Secret Methods can be learned once a Special Move has been used after a certain number of uses with some randomness thrown in. How do you equip high level Mana Eggs/Skill Books? All characters have a Skill Level, a Magic Level, and a Special Level. To learn more Special Moves, that character has to reach a certain point in Special Level to learn it. To equip high level Mana Eggs, that character's Magic Level must match the level of the Mana Egg. To equip high level Skill Books, that character's Skill Level must match the level of the Skill Book. --------------------------------------------- Section 3: Battle Themes From The OST --------------------------------------------- There are several battle themes and victory fanfares that play through Grandia 3. For those of you who are fortunate enough to own the official soundtrack, this section will list on which disk and tracks the appropriate songs are located. Regarding the stat tables: Each character's initial and level 99 base stats are listed here. Please note that the stats don't include bonuses from their default equipment, skills, or seeds, while assuming they've reached the cap for their magic, skill and special levels. Regarding Special Moves: When a character's Special Level hits specific values, choosing to perform a combo in battle gives the character a chance to learn new skills. Each character earns their moves once the conditions listed below are met. The one exception to this rule is Alfina's Armageddon spell, which is learned during a specific point in the story. In addition, information concerning each skill and its secret methods can be found here. Casting time is defined as the amount of time it takes for the character's icon to travel from the COM to ACT points. Regarding Expert Levels: Though there isn't a list that's been released, there are invisible stats that keep track of the amount of "Expert exp" the for Magic, Skill and Special levels. According to the official guide's chart, every battle a character participates in and is alive at the end, gets 8 points to each of the 3 categories. In addition, each action that at character performs in battle has a fixed point value, which is added to the default 8. For example, every time Yuki uses the Combo command, he gets an extra 4 points of "Skill Level exp", while using magic adds 1 extra point of "Magic Skill exp". Using special moves would add 3 points for his "Special Level exp". Once the respective skill exp levels are reached, the Magic, Skill, or Special level are increased, just like leveling up normally. However, each character's actions give different bonus points. This means that performing a combo with Yuki will give him 4 bonus points towards Skill level but Alfina would only get 1, while they could be reversed with Alfina getting 4 points for using magic, compared to only 1 with Yuki. This explains why it's easier for each of the chars to raise specific levels faster than the others. Also, Miranda and Alonso only get 4 points toward each category after a battle, in addition to only gaining 1 extra point per action they perform, explains why they almost never gain skill levels. Regarding the Expert Level Experience Table: this is an experimental attempt at determining how many expert points are required to reach the next skill level for the 3 categories, based on each character. Theoretically, the table would apply to all characters, which each character's growth rate being influenced by the different bonus points which are applied to each of their actions in battle. For example, it's easier for Yuki to level up Skill level and harder for him to level up Magic level. Conversely, Dahna has an easier time raising Magic level, but takes a lot longer to level up Skill level. ---- Yuki ---- Starting stats: Level: 1 EXP: 0 NEXT LEVEL: 80 Category Growth rate ----------------------------------- HP: 175 Average MP: 68 Average SP: 60 +10 per Special Level, up to maximum of 190. Whirlwind!", then spins once counter clockwise holding his sword with both hands, creating a whirlwind which damages all enemies around him. Special Properties: Wind elemental Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 2.5 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 30% S - Casting time reduced to 1 second P - Total damage increased by 80% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 140% Notes: A useful move, due to its ability to hit more than 1 target with a reasonable SP cost. Later, it gets superseded by Dragon Slash. ---Flash--- How To Obtain: Yuki's Special Level is at least 4; choose the Combo command in battle Power: N/A Range: Self SP Cost: 25 Description: Yuki spreads his legs to the side, holding his sword in front of him with both hands, roars, says "I feel the power!", and a small whirlwind starts encircling him to show that the buff is in effect. Special Properties: Yuki's attack, movement, # of hits with his Combo command/Swallow Slash aerial combo are doubled Secret Methods: None - 1 second casting time, 45 second duration, short move recovery P - Duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - Duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Duration increased by 50% Notes: A powerful support move, due to its ability to increase Yuki's damage potential for a small SP cost, and making it harder for him to miss his target due to fatigue. The movement speed increase can also be used to dodge some attacks with the Defend command. Useful even late in the game. Excellent when combined with maxed Berserker and aerial combos. ---Blade Storm--- How To Obtain: Yuki's Special Level is at least 6; choose the Combo command in battle Power: 4 stars Range: 1 enemy SP Cost: 50 Description: Yuki runs toward his target, performs a 9 hit combo, with the 9th hit sending the enemy up into the air. As the enemy falls back down to Yuki, he takes a baseball batter's stance, yells "Take this!" and bats his target across the battlefield with his sword, doing major damage for the 10th hit, while doing minor damage to other enemies his target slams into. Special Properties: Wind Elemental Secret Methods: None - 10 hits, 2.5 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 30% S - Casting time reduced to 1 second P - Total damage increased by 80% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 140% Notes: A good skill for focusing damage on 1 target. Though the SP cost is a bit steep, it's usually worth the cost. A great skill to use on Lucky Minks as well. Visually enjoyable to watch too. ---Invincible Aura--- How To Obtain: Yuki's Special Level is at least 7; choose the Combo command in battle Power: N/A Range: Self SP Cost: 75 Description: Yuki spreads his legs to the side, holding his sword in front of him with both hands and roars. A black and gold dome shaped shield then flashes on and off him to show that the buff is in effect. Special Properties: Absorbs damage Secret Methods: None - Absorbs 400 damage, 1 second casting time, 40 second duration, long move recovery P - Absorbs 200 extra damage, duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - Absorbs 600 extra damage, duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Absorbs 1200 extra damage Notes: This move is equivalent to the Crystal Wall spell but has a limited duration. Please note that the shield doesn't protect you from status ailments. Rather high SP cost but could be a lifesaver during boss fights. However, I personally didn't use it much since I prefer using SP for doing damage and cancelling with Aerial Slash. ---Dragon Slash--- How To Obtain: Yuki's Special Level is at least 9; choose the Combo command in battle Power: 6 stars Range: All Enemies SP Cost: 99 Description: Yuki raises his sword above his head with 1 hand, and golden energy waves begin to gather into his sword. During this time, he yells "Dragon of life, lend me your power!". Once the sword is glowing, he yells "Dragon Slash!" and thrusts his sword into the ground in front of him, creating an energy build up which forms cracks on the ground. After a few seconds, a huge explosion occurs from under the ground, causing extreme damage all enemies on the screen. Special Properties: None Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 3 second casting time, long move recovery P - Total damage increased by 30% S - Casting time reduced to 1 second P - Total damage increased by 80% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 140% Notes: The 2nd most powerful multi target move in the game, just behind Armageddon, due to its ability to hit all enemies on the screen for massive damage. Best used when there are multiple enemies on the screen which are resistant to magic. The damage caused is well worth the SP cost. ------- Miranda ------- Starting stats: Level: 6 EXP: 1290 NEXT LEVEL: 646 Category Growth rate ----------------------------------- HP: 260 Average MP: 103 Slow SP: 80 10 per Special Level, up to maximum of 150. She then performs a back flip, says, "But I'll fry you up anyway!" and throws a set of daggers, which hit all enemies within the attack's range. Special Properties: Earth elemental Secret Methods: None - 3 hits, 2.5 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 30% S - Casting time reduced to 1 second P - Total damage increased by 80% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 140% Notes: A useful move, due to its ability to hit more than 1 target with a reasonable SP cost, as long as the enemies are within the skill's range. Though it has more range than Yuki's Whirlwind, it's harder to target multiple enemies at close range. That said, it's best used when she's far away from the group of enemies as possible. ------ Alfina ------ Starting stats: Level: 1 EXP: 52 NEXT LEVEL: 28 Category Growth rate ----------------------------------- HP: 171 Average MP: 112 Average SP: 60 10 per Special Level, up to maximum of 180. Special Moves: ---Comet Spike--- How To Obtain: Alfina knows this move by default Power: 2 stars Range: 1 enemy SP Cost: 25 Description: Alfina raises her staff above her head with both hands and the tip begins to glow with light. She then leans back, says, "Oh divine comet, bringer of light. Illuminate the darkness!" in disk 1 or "Oh divine comet, slice through the pitch black night!" in disk 2, then bends forward, causing the light on the staff to form a projectile which arcs to her target's head. Special Properties: Cancels attacks. Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 1.5 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 20% S - Casting time reduced to 0 (executes instantly) P - Total damage increased by 45% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 75% Notes: This is Alfina's cancel skill, with its usefulness being self explanatory. As I stated with Yuki, its usefulness increases as you progress further into the game. ---Stun Force--- How To Obtain: Alfina's Special Level is at least 2; choose the Combo command in battle Power: 1 star Range: 1 enemy SP Cost: 30 Description: Alfina holds her staff in front of her with 1 hand and spins around once counter clockwise facing her target. She then says, "Sorry, this might hurt!" in disk 1, "I won't hold back!" in disk 2. Shortly, a cage of lightning surrounds and shocks her target, causing minor damage. If her target isn't immune to paralysis, it falls and lies on the ground, paralysed, thus cancelling its attack, with the lightning continuing to surround its body. Special Properties: 100% chance to paralyse the target as long as it isn't immune to paralysis. In addition, the target's action is cancelled. Duration is dependent on secret methods and the target's INI. Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 2 second casting time, 15 second duration, long recovery P - Damage increased by 20%, duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 0.75 seconds P - Damage increased by 45%, duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Damage increased by 75%, duration increased by 50% Notes: A fun move to use, as it prevents an enemy from harming the party, provided it's not immune to paralysis. As an additional bonus, it can also be used as a ranged cancel. For some odd reason, it takes Alfina ages to learn this move's secret methods. ---Ripple Shot--- How To Obtain: Alfina's Special Level is at least 4; choose the Combo command in battle Power: 3 stars Range: Line SP Cost: 40 Description: Alfina holds her staff in overhead and in front her with both hands and the tip begins to glow with light. She then spins around counter clockwise twice, while saying, "A blade of light to strike out at our enemies!", followed by "Ha!" in disk 1 and "You won't escape!" in disk 2. As she completes the 2nd spin, the light on the staff forms takes the shape of a chakram and travels in a line in front of her, damaging all enemies it hits. Special Properties: None Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 2.5 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 30% S - Casting time reduced to 1 second P - Total damage increased by 80% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 140% Notes: A useful addition to Alfina's arsenal, which gives her the ability to hit more than 1 target without using MP. The damage is worth the SP cost, as long as you hit enough enemies. Line up your shots for maximum damage. ---Holy Circle--- How To Obtain: Alfina's Special Level is at least 6; choose the Combo command in battle Power: N/A Range: Self SP Cost: 60 Description: Alfina holds her staff in front of her with both hands, concentrates and says, "Oh divine light, protect me!". 3 spheres of holy energy then encircle her which inflict damage, repel and knock down any enemies that touch them. Special Properties: Enemies hit by any of the 3 spheres take minor damage but are pushed back slightly and knocked down. Secret Methods: None - 1 second casting time, 40 second duration, short recovery P - Duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - Duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Duration increased by 50% Notes: This is Alfina's self buff and shouldn't be used very often. However, this move works well when facing lots of monsters who need to get into melee range to attack. As another merit to this skill, it's pretty hard to resist laughing when an enemy is stupid enough to keep running into the spheres, only to get hurt and repelled over and over again until the monster stops due to fatigue. For icing on the cake, command her to either move towards enemies or attack them so her attacks can sometimes stack with the sphere hits. ---Energy Drive--- How To Obtain: Alfina's Special Level is at least 8; choose the Combo command in battle Power: N/A Range: All allies except herself SP Cost: 50 Description: Alfina closes her eyes and holds her staff in front of her horizontally and chants, "Oh nurturing sun.". She then puts it away and begins floating slightly above the ground, legs spread and her body begins to glow. Upon reaching the ground again, she prays and chants "Bring courage and love to us all!". During the middle of the phrase, she lifts her arms into the air, causing a pillar of light to shine on her. Several spheres of holy energy then travel outward toward the edge of the screen, restoring SP to all allies, except herself. As the spheres go off screen and the pillar fades, she yells, "Now let's fight!". Special Properties: Alfina herself doesn't regain the SP granted by this move. Secret Methods: None - Restores 25 SP, 1 second casting time, long recovery P - Restores 40 SP S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - Restores 55 SP R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Restores 75 SP Notes: This move is among the best in the game, especially when fully developed. When fully upgraded, this move is deadly against your foes as an extra surge of 75 SP to everyone else can dramatically increase your party's total damage, by granting the ability use powerful skills like Dragon Slash, Dynamite Rush and Armageddon, multiple times in the same battle, without the use of rare SP recovery items like Warrior's Tonic. In addition, you can abuse this skill to to speed up the process of upgrading the rest of the party's skills. For maximum carnage, equip Alfina with the Fighting Spirit skill, Warrior's Charm and slam down Warrior's Tonics during tough fights. A truly outstanding move. Max this ASAP! You'll be glad you did. ---Armageddon--- How To Obtain: Alfina rejoins for the final battle Power: 6 stars Range: All enemies SP Cost: 99 Description: Alfina closes her eyes and begins to float high into the air, chanting "Let your anger and your hate be devoured by the divine light." as her body is engulfed by a golden light. She then says, "Your suffering is over." and light descends to the ground, creating an explosion which causes extreme damage, in addition to the effects I listed in the special properties section. Special Properties: Lowers all surviving enemies' atk, def, res, ini and mov for the prescribed duration, based on the number of secret methods learned. This is also the only way for the player to cause the Offense/Defense/Speed Down status ailments, as these spells have been stripped from us this time around, making it even more valuable. Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 3 second casting time, long move recovery P - Damage increased by 30%, duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 1.5 seconds P - Damage increased by 80%, duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Damage increased by 140%, duration increased by 50% Notes: The most powerful multi target move, and arguably the most powerful move in the game, with its only rivals being Yuki's Dragon Slash and Ulf's Dynamite Rush. Though Dragon Slash's damage potential is nearly identical, the main reason that that this skill is better is because of the Offense/Defense/Speed Down debuffs that this move inflicts on any survivors of this attack. ------ Alonso ------ Starting stats: Level: 8 EXP: 3100 NEXT LEVEL: 754 Category Growth rate ----------------------------------- HP: 376 Fast MP: 65 Slow SP: 100 10 per Special Level, up to maximum of 150. Unlike everyone else, Ulf really dishes out the pain with this move, from the moment he joins your party, right up to the end of the game. ---Force Wave--- How To Obtain: Ulf knows this move by default Power: 2 stars Range: Radius around Ulf SP Cost: 30 Description: Ulf curls up building up power and begins to roar. He then yells "Force Wave" as he uncurls, releasing a fast, but short ranged shockwave that damages and pushes away all enemies around him. Special Properties: The center of the area of effect is Ulf's body Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 0.75 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 30% S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - Total damage increased by 80% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 140% Notes: A skill that does nice damage for little SP. Best used when starting a battle surrounded by the enemy, since you're most likely to nail every enemy, thanks to its fast casting time. ---Flame Spike--- How To Obtain: Ulf knows this move by default Power: 4 stars Range: 1 enemy SP Cost: 40 Description: Ulf puts his flail on the ground, begins to roar and conjures a fireball. Being able to cancel multiple targets at once with only a 1 second casting time when upgraded, it's a very useful move that's worth maxing out quickly. Also keep in mind that this move does more damage compared to Rockbreaker, with double the SP cost as the tradeoff. ---Shadow Warrior--- How To Obtain: Ulf's Special Level is at least 7; choose the Combo command in battle Power: N/A Range: Self SP Cost: 25 Description: Ulf steps forward with his left leg and touches his forehead with his left hand to concentrate a little. Keep an eye on my shadow!", with a black whirlwind encircling him to show that the buff is in effect. Special Properties: Ulf's shadow will appear and add an additional hit to his target every time he performs a Combo or Critical. Also, please note that his aerial combo finisher You're Finished! triggers the shadow to appear at the end of the move, doubling it's already massive damage for even more pain. Secret Methods: None - 1 second casting time, 45 second duration, short recovery P - Duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - Duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Duration increased by 50% Notes: Similar to Yuki's Flash move, this is a powerful support move, due to its ability to increase Ulf's damage potential for a small SP cost. Although it doesn't boost movement speed like Flash, it's big selling point comes into play when you manage to pull off his "You're Finished" aerial combo finisher. Also, like Yuki's Flash, this move works well with the Berserker skill. ---Inferno Spike--- How To Obtain: Ulf's Special Level is at least 8; choose the Combo command in battle Power: 3 stars Range: Circle SP Cost: 60 Description: Ulf puts his flail on the ground, begins to roar and conjures a large fireball, saying "Get ready to fry, maggots!" as he creates it. He then leaps into the air, yells "Inferno spike!" and throws it toward his target, damaging all enemies around it for high damage. Just keep the increased SP cost in mind. ---Red Lotus--- How To Obtain: Ulf's Special Level is at least 9; choose the Combo command in battle Power: 5 stars Range: Line SP Cost: 75 Description: Ulf spins his flail at high speed, roaring as his weapon lights up with fire, saying "These flames are scorching hot!" as it grows in intensity. He then yells "10000 degrees of death! Hiyaaa!!", and swings his flail, causing the flames to travel toward his target, causing high damage to all enemies it hits. Use it in a similar fashion, keeping in mind that the damage is much higher, as a result of the increased SP cost. ---Dynamite Rush--- How To Obtain: Ulf's Special Level is at least 10; choose the Combo command in battle Power: 6 stars Range: 1 enemy SP Cost: 99 Description: Ulf crosses his arms in front of him, roars and a pillar of fire and rocks surround him. With his arms now at the side of his head, he then yells, "I'm loaded with.... dynamite! Hiyaaaa!!!", and charges into his target. Upon impact, the explosive force of the dynamite blows him away from his target, causing him to lie down on his back, motionless as the remaining sticks detonate on the target's body, causing very high damage per hit. After the final explosion, Ulf slowly stands up, feeling disoriented and saying "Ugh... I don't feel so good". Special Properties: None Secret Methods: None - 10 hits, 2.5 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 30% S - Casting time reduced to 1 second P - Total damage increased by 80% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 140% Notes: Perhaps the most powerful single target move in the game, due to its ability to inflict over 1600 points of damage on a single target per hit. Any card." 6-10 cards then materialize in front of her, then all but the last of them home in on her target, causing damage with each hit. After a brief pause, the last card homes in her target, causing damage and knocking it down. Special Properties: Cancels attacks. Use it as you would with everyone else's versions. ---Mana Capture--- How To Obtain: Dahna knows this move by default Power: 1 star Range: Circle SP Cost: 40 Description: Dahna asks her targets, "Pardon me, but would you mind sharing?" as she conjures a pink bolt and throws it towards her target. The bolt then opens a little vortex, causing light damage to all enemies in the attack's range and siphoning energy. The vortex then closes, becomes another pink bolt which Dahna grabs and absorbs it into her body, restoring 20% of the total damage inflicted as MP for her to use. After the absorption she laughs softly and says, "Thanks!". Special Properties: Cancels attacks. Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 1.5 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 20% S - Casting time reduced to 0 (executes instantly) P - Total damage increased by 45% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 75% Notes: This move is unique in the sense that its purpose isn't to do damage. Rather, it's used to allow Dahna to replenish her MP reserves quickly without the usage of items. If used well, this move can restore hundreds of MP at a time, allowing her to continuing unleashing her deadly but expensive spells. ---Dancing Cards--- How To Obtain: Dahna's Special Level is at least 7; choose the Combo command in battle Power: N/A Range: Self SP Cost: 25 Description: Dahna bends back, holding her hands together behind her head and chants "Oh cards of light. Hear my call." then extends her arms in front of her. At this moment, 4-10 cards materialize around her and as the last one spawns, she says, "Protect me!", which makes the cards begin to fly her. Special Properties: Counterattacks enemies. However, with some experimentation, choosing to perform a Critical makes these cards home in the target, setting up a more reliable chance at setting up aerial combos. Secret Methods: None - 4 cards, 1 second casting time, 40 second duration, medium recovery P - 6 cards, duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - 8 cards, duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - 10 cards, duration increased by 50% Notes: These cards attack enemies that go after her. However, their behavior is erratic so I'll need to do more research regarding this move. ---Mana Spring--- How To Obtain: Dahna's Special Level is at least 8; choose the Combo command in battle Power: N/A Range: Self SP Cost: 75 Description: Dahna bends back, holding her hands together behind her head and chants "Oh endless spring of magic power, I call on you!" then extends her arms in front of her. At this moment, a pink vortex appears at her feet, which follows her around as she walks. Special Properties: All of Dahna's spells will require no MP to cast as long as this is in effect. Secret Methods: None - 4 second casting time, 50 second duration, short move recovery P - Duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 1.25 seconds P - Duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Duration increased by 50% Notes: This skill is valuable in the endgame and during boss fights as it allows Dahna to cast her most powerful spells without any concern for rationing her MP, which in turn allows her to reach her full damage potential when it's needed the most. A great move to develop because the longer duration will help compensate for its high SP cost. ---- Hect ---- Important Note: Unlike the other characters who join you, Hect's starting level is determined as your party's average level. Special Moves: ---Crimson Shock--- How To Obtain: Hect knows this move by default Power: 1 star Range: All enemies SP Cost: 40 Description: Hect raises her baton above her head, spins around once, says, "Here I go!", and hops. About a second after landing, a shockwave emerges and travels at lightning speed, causing damage to and knocking all enemies on the screen down. At the end of the move, she asks, "Was that ok?". Special Properties: Cancels attacks. Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 1 second casting time, long recovery P - Total damage increased by 30% S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - Total damage increased by 80% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Total damage increased by 140% Notes: Hect's cancel skill is unique in several ways, both with unique advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, it nails every enemy on the screen and has the fastest execution time of all the other cancels when none are upgraded. The downside? Well, even with the speed upgrade, it's still not instant cast. In addition, this skill consumes 15 more SP compared to the standard variants the other characters have, making it harder to use more often. But with both sides considered, use it at your discretion though it's obviously great when you can cancel multiple enemies at once. ---Freeze--- How To Obtain: Hect knows this move by default Power: N/A Range: 1 enemy SP Cost: 75 Description: Hect waves her baton in front as if she was conducting. While facing her target, she says, "Hear me, evil-doers. Stop! Freeze!" while spinning counter clockwise twice, and a red vortex appears at her feet. As she continues to spin, vortex moves toward her target, paralysing it if isn't immune to paralysis. Her target then falls and lies on the ground, paralysed, thus cancelling its attack, suffering additional damage over time. Special Properties: 100% chance to paralyse the target as long as it isn't immune to paralysis. In addition, the target's action is cancelled. Duration is dependent on secret methods and the target's INI. This move is similar to Milennia's Spellbinding Eye in Grandia 2. Secret Methods: None - 1 second casting time, 15 second duration, long recovery P - Duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 0.25 seconds P - Duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Duration increased by 50% Notes: This move is quite similar to Alfina's Stun Force, from a strategic point of view, though you must keep the higher SP cost in mind. On the plus side, this move executes 0.5 seconds faster than Alfina's Stun Force. With these factors in mind, use this move at your discretion. ---Armageddon--- How To Obtain: Hect knows this move by default Power: 6 stars Range: All enemies SP Cost: 99 Description: Hect starts to play her violin and begins floating high into the air, chanting "Let your anger and your hate be soothed by this divine melody.", as a huge golden sphere of light appears in front of her. She then says, "Your suffering is over." and light descends to the ground, creating an explosion which causes extreme damage, in addition to the effects I'll list in the special properties section. Secret Methods: None - 1 hit, 3 second casting time, long recovery P - Damage increased by 30%, duration increased by 10% S - Casting time reduced to 1.5 seconds P - Damage increased by 80%, duration increased by 25% R - Move recovery time eliminated P - Damage increased by 140%, duration increased by 50% Notes: The most powerful multi target move, and arguably the most powerful move in the game, with its only rivals being Yuki's Dragon Slash and Ulf's Dynamite Rush. Though Dragon Slash's damage potential is nearly identical, the main reason that that this skill is better is because of the Offense/Defense/Speed Down debuffs that this move inflicts on any survivors of this attack. Later inherited by Alfina. ----------------------------------------------------- Section 5: Mana Eggs, Fusion & Extraction ----------------------------------------------------- This section explains each of the 34 eggs that exist in Grandia 3. Each "*" denotes 1 boost level to magic for the element it falls under. "Lvl" denotes the magic skill level that's required for a character to equip it, and is also used in the fusion process. "Spells Extracted" lists which spells are obtained when you destroy each egg. Please note that extracting magic from an egg permanently destroys the egg in question. Be careful when using fusion. Each "*" denotes 1 boost level to skills for the school it falls under. "Lvl" denotes the skill level that's required for a character to equip it. "Qty" denotes the number of copies of the book that are available in the game. I felt this was necessary so you don't accidentally burn 1 of a kind books that you want to keep. Only the Lucky Book has infinite copies because it's a monster drop. "Skills Extracted" lists which skills are obtained when you burn each book. Please note that extracting skills from a book permanently destroys the book in question. Be careful when extracting skills. These numbers were derived directly from Brady's Official Grandia 3 Guide. "Boost 0" through "Boost 3" denote the separate effectiveness levels of each of the spells, as they're boosted by mana eggs. "Range" denotes the target selection attribute of each spell according to the legend below: Range Definition Ingame Explanation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- S 1 enemy/ally Spell affects 1 target Line Line Affects all targets in front of the spell Circ Circle Targets inside the circle are affected 30o or 60o 30 or 60 degree fan Wedge shaped area of effect All All enemies/allies All enemies or allies are affected Self Self Caster can only cast the spell on self -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's the spell table, with the spells listed by element. This table will show each skill's effectiveness at each level, as well as a description of what the skill does. "Lv0" through "Lv3" state these values. "Slots" simply means how many skill slots are required to equip the skill. Naturally, more powerful skills require more slots to equip. Also, when extracting skills from books, please be very careful as several only have 1 copy. However, that said, some skills can only be obtain through extraction. Once you use any of them, you must refill the orb gauge (which is located on the top right of the battle screen) by defeating enemies before you can use any of them again. Each orb also provides various benefits to the party and they're listed below, in order of acquisition. All orbs are obtained during the story so you don't have to worry about missing any of them. Though I don't know exactly how long these orbs last, I'm guessing that they last for 60 seconds. An accurate duration would be greatly appreciated. Drak's Orb: Initially causes a huge amount of fire damage to all enemies on the screen. If there are any enemies still alive, the orb will continually shoot fireballs which further damage and knock them down. Yoat's Orb: Revives dead members, heals over time, and cleanses negative status effects. Seiba's Orb: Keeps the party buffed with WOW!, Diggin' and Runner. In other words, attack power is increased by 20%, defense and resistance are increased by 40%, and finally, Initiative and Move are increased by 50%. Unama's Orb: Freezes time for all enemies, allowing your party to either recover or pound them without fear of retaliation. Useful for killing Lucky Minks. ----------------------------------- Section 10: Tips and Exploits ----------------------------------- This section outlines and categorizes various strategies which allow you to exploit various parts of the game. ------------------------------------- Section 10a: Egg Farming ------------------------------------- The reason these exploits work is because they take advantage of the fact that leaving an area and re-entering it, the urns, flowers, mushrooms, etc respawn, thus giving you the chance to obtain more eggs. These tricks allow you to make the most powerful eggs and earn the most powerful spells in the game earlier than you would normally. You heard me right. Ether Eggs and high end spells like Galactic Bang, Absolute Zero and Astraea Zap can all be obtained the moment you have access to mana egg fusion. As tempting as it may be to equip all the best spells, keep the high MP costs required to cast these spells in mind before you dry up your MP reserves. For Bomb and Stone eggs: Once you get Dahna in Baccula, you can exploit the Stone and Bomb Eggs spawns in the Baculla Ruins - Sandy Path The urns in this part of the game have a random chance of dropping Bomb and Stone eggs. For Flare Eggs: The urns in Baculla Ruins - Earth Shrine drop these eggs. For Leaf Eggs: Head for either Dragon Valley (Rocky Terrace) or Vejas Ruins (Jungle Path) and break the flowers and mushrooms respectively. If you're feeling lucky and up to it, slay the Arlaunes in Vejas Ruins and you might be able to obtain the Blood Hammer for Ulf. This flail allows him to restore HP every time he attacks, as long as he's not attacking undead. With Yuki's Heaven Blade and Legendary Thief maxed, these enemies can also supply you with Shining Nuts and Crimson Potions. For Aqua, Wind, and Frost Eggs: The Silver Stream in the Verse Realm in disk 2's your destination this time, with the breakable glass mushrooms, being the suppliers of these eggs. For Wind and Cyclone Eggs: Nautica Plains (Great Plains) map west of Baculla's your destination this time, with the breakable mushrooms, being the suppliers of these eggs. If you're feeling lucky and up to it, slay the Woolwools here for a chance to get some Lucky Books. Eggs from monster drops: Many of the enemies in this game drop eggs rather frequently when using Legendary Thief and Yuki's Heaven Blade. I'll add more places as I discover Them but for the time being, Raflid - Northern Alps and the Vejas Ruins maps are good sources for eggs. -------------------------------- Section 10b: Gold Farming -------------------------------- Your 1st chance to rack up the gold is when you hit Arcriff Forest. Spend time killing BaaBaas as they give 80 gold each and sometimes drop Sheepskin, which sells for 1000 gold at the General Store inside Arcriff. Baccula Ruins (Sandy Path) is your next opportunity here. The trick this time around lies with the 2 groups of urns that lie east of the entrance when entering this map from Baccula. Repeatedly walk back and forth between the 3 urns close to the entrance, just past the formerly locked door, and the cluster of 9 urns on the 2nd level. The urns drop Topaz Rings pretty often, which sell for 1500 each. As an added bonus, 1 monster encounter which separates the clusters gives a god 600+ exp, as well as an endless supply of Stone and Bomb Eggs. Once you enter the Verse Realm, The Silver Stream is the place to be this time. The strategy and benefits of this place is exactly like Baccula Ruins (Sandy Path), except that this time, the glass mushrooms drop Amethyst Rings, which sell for 2500 gold each. As an added bonus, these mushrooms also drop Aqua, Wind, and Frost Eggs. For icing on the cake, the 2 Gigas Thetas monster encounter is also a nice way to bag over 1000 exp per battle with relative ease, along with a small chance of getting some Power Seeds (0.04% chance), Miracle Elixirs (6.25% chance), and even Amethyst Rings (2.5% chance) on the side. Last but not least, the corridor before the final boss is particularly lucrative with all party members equipped with maxed Legendary Thief, and Yuki with his Heaven Blade. Once you already have a Spirit Sword and Spirit Staff, farm all the monsters here because each Spirit Sword that an Excise Omega drops sells for 32000 gold. The Demon Lords also drop Thor's Boots, which are crappy compared to Warp Boots. A pair of those sells for 16500 gold. As an added bonus, as you're killing these guys, you'll get truckloads of stat boosting seeds to really strengthen your characters. If you're willing to part with your 2 Veteran Books extract the Verse Hunter skill from each of the and equip them, along with Demon Hunter on Yuki and Ulf, to allow them to do maximum damage to the majority of the enemies here. Last but not least, equip the Luck skill with a book to max it out, then farm the Desert Lord for 4000 gold before the Luck skill's effects. ------------------------------ Section 10c: Exp Farming ------------------------------ As a general rule of thumb, look for places with rainbow save spheres, which have monsters that yield good exp, with an easy way to leave and re-enter the area to force a respawn. These are areas I can think of off the top of my head which provide good exp. While farming bomb and stone eggs in Baculla Ruins - Sandy Path, the encounter with 2 Skeletal Warriors and the Undead Mage, which patrols the bridge very close to the room with 9 urns on the 2nd floor give 647 exp a pop. The gargoyles on the way to Herasell are good for gathering exp quickly. The 2 Gigas Theta encounter in Verse Realm - Silver Stream gives a little over 1000 exp and are rather easy to kill. In addition, this spawn is very close to the map exit so it's easy to leave and re-enter the area to make it respawn. All the enemies in Surmania Ruins - Cursed Tower not only give good exp, they also drop seeds, as well as the Spirit Sword and Spirit Staff. However, to really rack up the exp, the Lucky Mink is the enemy you want to farm. These fast critters yield 16384 exp. Even though they only have 18HP, even our strongest attacks will only cause 0 or 1 damage. If that wasn't bad enough, they also try to run away from battle often. Anyway, they're found in Melc Ruins and in Surmania Ruins. The best strategy here is to use Unama's Orb with this particular encounter to freeze time. Since the Orb prevents the minks from fleeing, you have extra time to kill them. Since they always take 0-1 damage, using multi hit skills and spells as often as possible. Galactic Bang and Heaven's Gate are ideal. Flash with maxed Berserker on Yuki and Shadow Warrior on Ulf (also with maxed Berserker) work well too. In the Heart Of The Underground maze, there's a fixed encounter with has 3 Lucky Minks and a Calibus. With maxed out Hero's Talent, this fight can net you 102004 exp for only 1 fight! Regardless of where you farm, make sure every has Hero's Talent equipped and boosted to maximum. On a side note, once you reach a high enough level (I think 65+), the exp required for future levels won't exceed 65535 (FFFF in hex) points. At level 99, a character will have exactly 3.5 million total exp. -------------------------------------- Section 10d: Rare Item Farming -------------------------------------- Though this is easier said than done, the best way to maximize your chances is to do the following: 1) Get a Lucky Book to drop off of a Lucky Mink. They're found in Melc Ruins and in Surmania Ruins. The best strategy here is to save your game with your orb gauge full and having Unama available. Get into a battle with a Lucky Mink in it and immediately use Unama's Orb to freeze time. The Orb prevents the critter from running away. Since they always take 0-1 damage, use multi hit skills and spells. Galactic Bang and Heaven's Gate are ideal. Flash with maxed Berserker on Yuki and Shadow Warrior on Ulf (also with maxed Berserker) work well too. If the book doesn't drop after you kill it, reload the game and try again. Eventually, you'll get one. 2) Extract the Legendary Thief skill from the Lucky Book and equip it on Yuki. Also, make sure you equip a book to boost Legendary Thief's effectiveness to max. 3) Farm Forest Protectors in Vejas Ruins until they drop a Heaven Blade. Sadly, you can't use aerial combos because they possess the Unshakable Will skill. 4) With Yuki equipped with the blade and maxed Legendary Thief skill, do your best kill the enemies which drop the desired items with aerial combo finishes. Refer to the list below and kill the appropriate enemies to obtain the items you desire. Weapons ------- Spirit Sword: +125 Attack, SP restored when you attack (Excise Omega in Surmania Ruins, Cursed Tower) Maken Galcion: +0 Attack, +120 Magic (Duamutef in Surmania - Cathedral) Spirit Staff: +96 Attack, +80 Magic (Last Keeper in Surmania Ruins - Cursed Tower) Staff of Isis: +160 Attack (Gigas Pi in Surmania - Castle) Chaos Flail: +0 Attack, +150 Magic (Hyudra - Middle head in Melc Ruins - Hall Of Time) Power Cards: +180 Attack (Caveman Warrior in Raflid Alps - Northern Mountains) Blood Hammer: +62 Attack, Absorbs HP (Arlaune in Vejas Ruins - Jungle Path) Armor ----- Ninja Suit: +80 Defense, Halves Null element damage (Forest Protector in Vejas - Jade Temple) Accessories ----------- Dash Ring: +10 MOV (Mimic in Melc Ruins - Center & Surmania - Cathedral) Hurricane Belt: +10 INI (Lucky Mink in Melc Ruins & Surmania Ruins - Heart Of The Underground Maze) Mana Emblem: Restores 10% of max MP at the end of battle (Lucky Mink in Melc Ruins & Surmania Ruins - Heart Of The Underground Maze) Shoes ----- Warp Boots: +20 Initiative, warp movement (Mimic in Melc Ruins - Center & Surmania - Cathedral) Queen Heels: +30 Initiative (Calibus in Surmania Ruins - Heart Of The Underground Maze) --------------------------------- Section 10e: Stat Maxing --------------------------------- Surmania Ruins is the place to max out your stats. In particular, the corridor before the final boss, as well as the prior room are particularly lucrative with all party members equipped with maxed Legendary Thief, and Yuki with his Heaven Blade. Once you already have a Spirit Sword and Spirit Staff, your life will become easier. The goal here is to farm all the monsters here with reckless abandon. If you're willing to part with your 2 Veteran Books, extract the Verse Hunter skill from each of the 2 books and equip both Verse Hunter skills, along with Demon Hunter on Yuki and Ulf, to allow them to do maximum damage to the Demon Lords, Last Keepers and Excise Omegas. Refer to the table below and kill the appropriate enemies to obtain the seeds you desire. Answer: I'll do so when demand and desire dictate. After all, there's always work. At the same time, I'm still playing World Of Warcraft so might keep me distracted. Question: How long is this game? Answer: The whole journey can take up to 30-35 hours max. Question: Do I have to play the previous Grandia games to understand this one? Answer: No. The Grandia games are not connected in anyway. Question: Does this game have any sidequests? Answer: The only sidequests in this game are gambling at Bianca's Casino for items, as well as Otto's 5 cases. Question: Does this game have a New Game+ feature? Answer: Sadly, no. Question: Are Freeze! and Cold in this game? Answer: Armageddon's the only skill that the player can use to lower enemies' speed and movement this time around. I was pretty bummed about this as well. I can only assume that Game Arts found it to be overpowered. Why you ask? This is just my personal opinion but in Grandia 2, Cold and Freeze! made bosses too easy because you could slow their IP gauge to a snail's pace and make their regular attacks futile as they'd never reach their target. Conversely, you could stack Speedy and use items to get Ryudo to +5 Act status. Combine that with 2 maxed out Speed Up skills and you'll see his IP gauge blaze through as if he was Melfice, while the boss' gauge would move at Mareg's speed. Question: I keep hearing that Galactic Bang is good and how do you get it? Answer: Cluster and Ether Eggs net you Galactic Bang when extracted. Of the 2, the former's easier to obtain. An easy way to get Cluster eggs is to farm 1 Stone Egg and 2 Bomb Eggs from Baccula Ruins - Sandy Path for each copy of the spell you want. This is what you do: 1) Fuse the 1st Bomb Egg with the Stone Egg to create a Blast Egg. 2) Fuse the Blast Egg you just made with the 2nd Bomb Egg to create a Cluster Egg. 3) Extract Galactic Bang and Quake from the Cluster Egg. Question: Are there any SP recovery items? If so, what're they called and where do you get them? Answer: All the SP recovery items must be found or earned through the casino. They are: Warrior's Tonic: Restores 100 SP Enemies: Aton Delta Aton Omega Bigfoot Gilled Sniper Skeleton Knight Skeleton Warrior Other ways include: Arrange Dice Mushrooms in Verse Realm - Silver Stream Mushrooms in Nautica Plains - Great Plains Mushrooms in Vejas Jungle - Entrance and Jungle Golden Elixer: Restores 200 SP Chests: Nautica Plains - Dig Site Vejas Ruins - Jade Temple Melc Ruins - Center Surmania Ruins - Heart Of Underground Maze 1F Enemies: Hyudra - Left Question: Where is the Expert Book? Answer: Brady's Guide is wrong in stating that Hect starts with one. She starts with the Divine Book. To find the Expert book, you 1st need to kill the 2 Omega Breed bosses before Surmania ruins. Also make sure you destroy the nucleus. Once you've done so, walk back to the Northern Alps to where you originally found the Crystal Rose parked. The plane will be gone and the book will be lying on the floor in its place. ----------------------------------------- Section 12: Contact Information ----------------------------------------- I can be reached via the following methods: Public Email: Tigereye_85@hotmail.com ICQ: 36767111 AIM: Valgar X MSN: Tigereye_85@hotmail.com GFAQs: Tigereye World Of Warcraft: Rosara, Medivh Realm ----------------------------- Section 13: Credits ----------------------------- My thanks go out to all of the following, plus anyone else who assists in the future.
