I'm from Germany, but as most FAQs are written in english,I will do so,too. Please don't complain about my grammar, just email me and tell me what's wrong. You can email me at principito99@hotmail.com I never played any fishing game before.Perhaps you remember the mini-game of fishing in the "Breath of Fire" games.I loved that and as Reel Fishing III was very cheap at the stores,I gave it a try.And...I love it,too... ---------------- --- 4.Review --- ---------------- Platform: PS2 Release: 09/05/03 in Europe,09/11/03 in NorthAmerica (delayed in France) Player: 1 Memory Card: min369kb Graphics: 8/10 (sometimes nearly fotorealistic, but sometimes crazy camera angles.Sometimes I can't recognize when morning ends and afternoon starts, especially when it's foggy) Background music: 8/10 (nice, not annoying, but I turned it off for real fishing atmosphere) Sound effects: 10/10 (close your eyes and it's like fishing in nature) Gameplay: 10/10 (although you always do the same thing,it never gets boring) Technic: 5/10 (many players report of problems with the vibration function and as far as I know,it's not compatible with any rod controller) Controls: 8/10 (easy after you know what to do) Manual: ?/10 (I'm really upset about this:the german version only had 5 pages and a web-link,that was incorrect.I got one in the web,and it's okay) Overall: 9/10 (Not perfect, but close to) Buy or rent??? As it is very cheap all over Europe,I'll give it a clear: BUY! ------------------ --- 5.Controls --- ------------------ I don't want to tell you how to go through the menus of the game,I think you know that. But some things are important even away from the fishing spots. Very often you can get help by pressing the "Select"-Button.When you mark a certain lure, bait, rod etc. it tells you about that.Use this for your advance! As you can see in the tackle list, there are many items in the game.Take your time to learn about the different things. When you are in the Aqua Lodge, you're guy is walking very slow.Just press X again to make him "beam" to the selected point. Maybe everybody knows that, but it took me several minutes to learn this: when you are in the tank room, press "UP" to go back to the living room. If you were brought to the tank room right from a fishing spot, this will let you go on to the next day. While you are in the tank view mode, you can feed a certain fish by pressing triangle, and tap at the window by pressing square. Some fish will swim towards you, some will get a higher stress level. Okay but now about fishing... Cast you're rod by pressing X.Press it short for a short cast and long for a longer cast. With a fly rod, press X for the cast. The longer you cast the longer your cast will be. If your cast was not good,or you want to get in your line immediatelly, press circle. Retrieve your line now by pressing X.Depending on the lure, bait etc you've choosen,it will come in fast or slow. Some lures sink by their own, some only when retrieved.Sometimes you have to wait a little until the lure sunk a bit. Some lures don't sink. If a fish approaches you're lure, the camera angle will switch. You now have to pull back the left analog stick or press Xto set the hook. But the time you have to do this may vary from fish to fish.A Pale Chub for example is fast and needs a fast hook-setting,while you will loose the bigger Largemouth Bass if you pull to soon.Try to vary the timing if you have problems to set hook on a special fish. You normally hear a sound like "tsching",when you set the hook correctly. Now you have to retrieve the fish.Pull back the left analog stick and press X.Do both whenever the fish is calm.If you hear a sound like a sonar beeping in an u-boat,that's the sound of your line. The sound will get higher and faster and at the end your line will break.Just let it break at least once.So you know how far you can go. If the fish begins to fight, you should release pressure of the line. You can do that by stop pressing X,stop pulling back left analog stick and pressing it forwards or doing both.Once more it depends on the fish. With a little Pale Chub I normally stop pulling back the stick, but don't press it forwards, still pressing X.With a big Florida Bass,I immediately release X and press the stick forward. The fish will swim away some metres, but when he is calm again you can pull him back and gain more metres. If you have retrieved him,you will pick him up automatically. Now you can choose if you want to keep him in the Livewell to put him in the tank at Aqua Lodge,or if you want to release him. If you loose the fish without breaking the line, you normally pulled on him too much.Remember:if you don't pull, and he swims away a bit,and afterwards you can pull him back even more, you gained the metres.Sometimes one step back means two steps forward. This is a realisitic game, you can't pull the fish in with one stroke. You have to fight him down. --------------------- --- 6. Walktrough --- --------------------- As you can think,I can't give you THE ONE AND ONLY advice to catch a certain fish you need.I will tell you what you have to do at each stage and give you advices how you can do that. You will hear a sound jingle when you did the expected at a stage.Don't mistake it for the biggest fish sound jingle which is a bit shorter. It's easier to catch fishes on a foggy day,as they are closer to the surface than on a sunny day.But some fishes only show up on a sunny day as the water is warmer then...Read the help screens for a certain fish to get him. If you use a bait and the fish only steals the bait and swims away you have to vary the size of the hook. PIER: Catch at least 10 fishes You need help with this? Then you should not play this game...Very easy! YAMAME MT.STREAM: Catch a Splake Use a spoon, step as far to the right as you can and cast infront or to the right of the waterfall. It seems to be easier when it is a foggy afternoon. SHALLOWS: Catch a D.B.C.Carp with at least 12 inches size Well, the only thing I can tell you is that I caught all the big ones in the evening hours. CHAR MT.STREAM: Catch at least 10 Chars It is important to set the hook quickly to get a Char. WATERFALL BASIN: Catch 3 Chars with at least 12 inches size each Nothing to be said...Just don't think the first three fishes you catch will be at least 1ft size.Just catch and catch and catch... WOODS: Catch a Florida Bass with at least 18 inches size I was going mad on this one.If you have a Spinner Bait, use it.If you catch a Florida with 15-17 inches you can keep it in the Aqua Room until he grows to 18 inches and release him to habitat. You will surely not catch him the next day,but you can be sure that there is at least one fish of that size... MISTY COVE: Catch a Brown Trout Very easy,too...You can choose to catch it with the fly rod or the lure rod for trouts. OLD BRIDGE: Catch 2 B.C.Roach and 2 Silver Carp For those who don't have vibrations...good night... The B.C.Roach takes the lure and swims away. The vibe takes 3-4 seconds to come.Without vibe you have to try a bit. It's like gambling for you... SALMON RIVER: Catch a Salmon After fishing the whole day here, you should have at least one salmon. From now on,you will get challenges. You will have to catch a fish of a certain size or bigger.Read about growing fishes of bigger sizes in the Aqua room section.Something strange happened to me in the woods. The letter about the challenge said I should catch a 25 inches Florida.I caught one with 24 inches and got the "biggest fish" jingle.A little after that,I caught another with 24 inches and got the jingle that tells me that I did the challenge! As I had both fishes in the Livewell,I compared them and as I toggled between them,I realized that indeed one was a bit bigger and solved me the challenge! So maybe you can clear some challenges with a fish that is smaller than I told you. SHALLOWS: D.B.C.Carp with 18 inches See above for the first D.B.C.Carp to get some help. YAMAME MT.STREAM: Yamame Trout with 16 inches PIER: Largemouth Bass with 17 inches You will see the fish in the water as he is much bigger than the others. CHAR MT.STREAM: 3 Chars with 18 inches each WATERFALL BASIN: Char witch 22 inches WOODS: Florida Largemouth Bass with 25 inches MISTY COVE: Brown Trout with 32 inches Another big fish that you will see in the water due to its size. Not very hard as you can choose te get him with a fly rod or the trout rod. OLD BRIDGE: Catch the Bighead Carp WATERFALL BASIN: Catch the Monsterchar The Monsterchar swims deeper than it appears so be sure to use a lure for medium, deep or bottom. You will receive an ending-video now. After that, you have to complete your fish guide. You need every fish in every size available(means juvenile, normal and lunker). If you go to the fish guide, orange names tell you that here is something missing. When you caught all the fishes,he will appear.... SALMON RIVER: Catch the legendary Giant King Salmon After catching the Giant King Salmon you open up the bonus room... CARP ROOM: Just a bonus room where you can catch black and red carps. They don't appear in any list in the game. ----------------------- --- 7.Fishing spots --- ----------------------- I will tell you the name and what fish you can catch there. PIER: Bluegill,Largemouth Bass YAMAME MT.STREAM: Bullhead,Dace,Splake,Yamame Trout SHALLOWS: Bitterling,Bluegill,Deepbodied Crucian Carp, Florida Largemouth Bass,Largemouth Bass,Pale Chub CHAR MT.STREAM: Bullhead,Char,Dace,Splake WATERFALLS: Char,Monsterchar WOODS: Bluegill,Brown Trout,Florida Largemouth Bass, Largemouth Bass,Rainbow Trout MIST COVE: Brown Trout,Rainbow Trout OLD BRIDGE: Black Chinese Roach,Carp,Cherry Salmon, Grass Carp,Silver Carp,Bighead Carp SALMON RIVER: King Salmon,Pink Salmon,Steelhead Trout,Giant King Salmon (First you only have one day there, after you caught the Monsterchar you can get there everytime) CARP ROOM: Red Carp,Black Carp ------------------- --- 8.Fish List --- ------------------- Behind each fish I tell you which sizes are available: J for Juvenile(Juv), N for Normal and L for Lunker(Lnkr). Bighead Carp N Bitterling N Black Carp N Black Chinese Roach N L Bluegill J N Brown Trout N L Bullhead N Carp L Char J N L Cherry Salmon N L Dace N Deepbodied Crucian Carp J N Florida Largemouth Bass N L Giant King Salmon N Grass Carp L King Salmon L Largemouth Bass J N L Monsterchar N Pale Chub N Pink Salmon J N Rainbow Trout J N L Red Carp N Silver Carp N Splake J N Steelhead Trout N L Yamame Trout J N The cover of the game says that there are more than 30 different fishes, but as you can see, there are only 26.If you count the different sizes of the fishes there are 42 fishes. --------------------- --- 9.Tackle List --- --------------------- New tackle: If you catch at least 5 fishes a day,you will get new tackles. When you go back to Aqua Lodge, the statistic screen tells how many new tackles you will get.It depends on your catch rate.Every yellow star under the catch percentage means one new tackle: less than 70%: 3 tackles that you already obtain from 70% to 79%: 1 new,2 you already obtain from 80% to 89%: 2 new,1 you already obtain more than 90%: 3 brandnew tackles that you've never seen before To make it clear:for 5 fishes you will get 3 new tackles, but only if your catch rate is high enough, you will get tackles that you don't obtain yet.The catch rate means how many fishes on which you set the hook correctly you retrieved.Loosing a fish due to a fight or a broken line will lower this rate. The hearts and the shields: The hearts tell you how attractive a tackle is for a certain fish. You can choose different fishes with the R2 and L2 buttons.Don't think that the highest number is a guarantee to catch the fish.Sometimes I prefer to use a fly even if it's less attractive. Some fish really are addicted to flies and can be caught much easier with a fly than with a lure. The shields tell you how durable the tackle is.Every medal has two sides, normally attractive tackles are not durable and durable tackles are not attractive. You have to find a compromise here. A.AQUA ROOM In the Aqua Room there are two tanks where you can keep and grow fishes. Every fish you have in the tank lowers the population in its habitat. You can feed a fish with the triangle button and tap on the window with the square button. Some fish like it and will swim towards you, others will get a higher stress level. If I understood the manual correctly, you WILL HAVE TO grow bigger fishes in order to catch bigger ones.If you never grow a Florida Bass bigger you will not be able catch a bigger one.In fact,I never grew a Brown Trout and solved the challenge on Misty Cove with the first catch! So I'm not sure about this. But with the Florida:from the day I released two fishes of 25 inches to the woods, there were many, many lunkers around there. So,I think it doesn't hurt to keep some fishes and grow them in order to make the challenges a bit easier. B.PUZZLE 23 pieces: 9 Fishing spots (without Carp Room) 9 Challenges 1 Giant King Salmon 1 Carp Room 1 Broken Lure 1 Bottle 1 Friend's Diary C.LETTER TRAY It's always a good idea to read a bit in the letters as they tell you many, many things about fishing. The letter tray obtains the following (numbers say how much letters are in there right now): Important: about the game, fishing, the aqua lodge etc. (33) Fishing Guide: about the fishing spots (10) A Challenge: about the challenges you have to do later in the game (9) About Fish: about the fishes (22) About Fishing: about your tackle (29) Others: a little bit of philosophy (15) -------------- --- 11.FAQ --- -------------- Q: I do not feel any vibrations with my controller. A: Many people report of that problem, seems to be a big glitch.I don't know what to do. Q: Can I play with my rod controller? A: As far as I know the game is not compatible with any rod controller. Q: I'm stuck on spot XXX,what do I have to do? A: When you watch the puzzle in the tackle room,it tells you what you have to do at each spot. Q: I found a broken lure and an old bottle. What are they good for? A: All I know is that they appear in the puzzle and on the left side of the desk.I don't know more right now. Q: The fishes always steal my bait and swim away. What can I do? A: Vary the size of the hook. Q: How can I go to Misty Cove? A: First it have to be a foggy day.I don't know why you can't go there everytime when it's foggy. Q: How long did it take you to play the whole game? A: As I wrote this guide while playing,my save game says more than 51 hours! Q: I don't know the foot and inch measurement system, what's that in metres? A: 1 ft (1') are 30,48cm. 1 inch (1'') are 2,54cm. 12 inch are 1 ft. ------------------ --- 12.Credits --- ------------------ GAMEFAQS for the best web site on games. When I'm stuck and need help, GameFAQS is here to help me.
