All Rights Reserved. ~ Foreword ~ The purpose of this F.A.Q is to gather every piece of information about the soundtrack of Shadow of the Colossus and compile it into a single complete guide. This is being done to answer several questions that new or experienced players might have when playing the game and enjoying the background music. Please do understand that because this guide covers all the music spanning beginning to end it might contain minor and/or major spoilers. We suggest that before reading this F.A.Q you complete the game and enjoy the amazing ending that would, otherwise, be spoiled. One last thing, the PAL version was used as reference to this guide. There are subtle differences between the PAL and NTSC games. Tracks appearing in the NTSC version were compiled by Legend 14; this guide being a joint project. I really like song's final minute, where the choir really kicks in, as well as the violin buildup around the 2 minute mark. alexrowe19 - This track is what made me get the game. There's no other track on the CD that complements the intro movie in such a motivational way. The theme depicts solitude and hope (at the 2:24 mark). Every time I listen to "Prologue" I end up wanting to play the game. Prohibited Art Playing Time - 01:53 Sample - Played During: Introductory cutscene of the game ~ after main title screen; when NEW GAME is selected - When the wanderer enters the Shrine of Worship Game's ending sequence - When Lord Emon's men shoot the wanderer in the leg Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Awesome song. Dramatic and majestic. One of the most powerful shots in the game, when the wanderer unveils Mono and stares out at the open land, is perfectly complemented by this piece (at the 1:15 mark). alexrowe19 - The feeling I get when listening to "Prohibited Art" is one of reaching a goal. The wanderer did the unthinkable, he trespassed the Cursed Lands and made it to this faraway place - where no other man would ever dare to come. Commandment Playing Time - 01:54 Sample - Played During: Introductory cutscene of the game ~ after main title screen; when NEW GAME is selected - When the wanderer places Mono on the resurrection altar Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Good, but not on the same plateau as some of the other pieces. alexrowe19 - A mysterious track. I like it. It makes you wonder what the secrets of the Shrine are. Black Blood Playing Time - 02:03 Sample - Played During: Introductory cutscene of the game ~ after main title screen; when NEW GAME is selected - When the shadows appear and the wanderer raises his sword Additional Info - Used as non-combat music for Colossus #8 (about 40 seconds) Authors' Notes Legend 14 - The song sure does evoke evilness, doesn't it? Although I don't listen to it very much, it fits its segments very well. alexrowe19 - A shadowy track. I start to like it from the 0:40 mark onwards. Resurrection Playing Time - 01:54 Sample - Played During: Introductory cutscene of the game ~ after main title screen; when NEW GAME is selected - When Dormin speak and tell the wanderer how to bring back the soul of the maiden Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - The chorus in this song is quite nice. Very good around the 1:10 mark . alexrowe19 - This is the reason I got this OST. My absolutely favourite track on the CD. 1:10 gives me the chills. I get the feeling of: "We're here and whatever happens I cannot go back, even if I wanted to." Sign of the Colossus Playing Time - 01:52 Sample - Played During: Intro theme to Colossus #1 - Played when you reach Colossus location Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Even though about 40 seconds of the song is played in the game, they are the best 40 seconds of the song. The rest is pretty good, too. alexrowe19 - A great introduction theme to the very first Colossus. Just like Legend said the 40 seconds in the game are the best. Grotesque Figures ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 02:05 Sample - Played During: Battle Theme for Colossus #1 - Played when you first see the Colossus Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - This is an amazing battle theme. It's best used when you fight Valus, the first colossus, and truly makes the gigantic creature feel even more imposing. alexrowe19 - I've always said that Valus is the most striking Colossus, being the first. When you get a glimpse of the beast you realize that no other game has opponents this... colossal :P Grotesque Figures complements this feeling to a perfect extent. The Opened Way ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 01:57 Sample - Played During: Triumph Theme for Colossus #1 - Played when you solve Colossus puzzle Additional Info - Also used for Colossi battles #3, #4 and #15 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Incredible. Perhaps the best track on the OST, and certainly one of the most epic. In a way, it's a motivational piece (this monster may be huge, but you can do it!). Breathtaking, awe-inspiring, magnificent, etc. alexrowe19 - I know most players agree that this is the best triumphant theme but unfortunately, I don't agree. By no means, don't get me wrong. The track feels epic but there's another one that I find magnificent. The end of the battle Playing Time - 01:42 Sample - Played During: Cutscene of dying colossus - Colossi Death theme Game's ending sequence - When the wanderer is being sucked in the pool of light Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I love this song. It's very bitterweet when used in the game, and it evokes different emotions, especially after you've killed a colossus for the first time. alexrowe19 - Sorrow. That's what this song was written for. It makes slaying the Sixteen (like I love calling them) feel wrong. Idol Collapse Playing Time - 00:34 Sample - Played During: Cutscene of collapsing idol- Played after each colossus is defeated and idol collapses Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Meh. I'm not a big fan of pipe organs. alexrowe19 - I like this one. The pipe organs make you feel something's wrong with slaying Colossi. Maybe it's the eerie feel to the track. Green Hills Playing Time - 00:33 Sample - Played During: Intro theme to Colossus #4 - Played when you reach Colossus location Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - An O.K. introduction to a new area, but not very memorable. alexrowe19 - One of my favourite introductory samples. I like it. A violent Encounter ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 01:57 Sample - Played During: Battle Theme for Colossus #4 - Played when you first see the Colossus Additional Info - Also used for Colossi battles #2 and #9 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I like this song a lot. Very dramatic, especially around the 1:10 mark. alexrowe19 - A one track which inspires me to fight. Long-loved since I've watched the NICO trailer demo reel. Revived Power ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 02:18 Sample - Played During: Triumph Theme for Colossus #4 - Played when you solve Colossus puzzle Additional Info - Also used for Colossi battles #2, #6 and #9 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - A good complement to "A Violent Encounter." I like it, but it's probably the weakest triumph theme in the game. alexrowe19 - I loved this song when fighting my mate Basaran (#9), my favourite Colossus. But apart from that I agree with Legend. It's not one of the strongest triumph themes. Lakeside Playing Time - 00:26 Sample - Played During: Intro theme to Colossus #3 - Played when you reach Colossus location Additional Info - Also used for Colossus #7 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Very peaceful song, and fits the lake themes well. alexrowe19 - It's a peacful track, just not very memorable. Silence ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 01:49 Sample - Played During: Battle Theme for Colossus #5 - Played when you first see the Colossus Additional Info - Also used for Colossi battles #7 and #13 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - This could be the most beautiful piece in the game. Fits Avion the best, and made my first time against him unforgettable (the songs in this game tend to do that ^_^). I love the buildup to the 30 second mark, and the song is even better after that. alexrowe19 - "Silence" is one of those songs that fit the battles and Colossi where it's used like a glove. I like it a lot especially at the 1:20 mark. In awe of the Power ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 02:12 Sample - Played During: Triumph Theme for Colossus #3 - Played when you solve Colossus puzzle Additional Info - Also used for Colossi battles #7, #12 and #13 Special Note - This track is interchangable; It plays both the battle and triumph themes - depending on the battle Also, since #13 has three different themes, it is the middle track played, after you shoot its air sacks Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Again, another great battle theme. The flutes around the 40 second mark, as well as the violins at around 1:00, help make this one of the most memorable themes in the game. alexrowe19 - The battle with Phalanx, #13, wouldn't be the same without this song. A truly magnificent peace of music. Wander's Death Playing Time - 00:46 Sample - Played During: Game Over Screen Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Nothing special, and I usually hate hearing it for obvious reasons. alexrowe19 - One of the weaker songs in the game, not "weaker" as in "bad" but as in the feeling it presents. The wanderer is dead when it plays, so it does make sense... -_- The Farthest Land Playing Time - 03:23 Sample - Played During: NTSC Version - Agro/Hawk roaming scenes PAL Version - ? Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - It's a shame the PAL version doesn't have this song, because I think it's one of the best on the soundtrack. There really isn't a specific segment of the song that I can point to; the whole thing is incredible. alexrowe19 - I have mixed feelings for this one. I like it as it's perfect for the travelling aspect of the game, but apart from that I'm not overly fond of it. Nonetheless it's a good track. Creeping Shadow ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 01:47 Sample - Played During: Battle Theme for Colossus #8 - Played when you first see the Colossus Additional Info - Also used for Colossi battles #4 and #12 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I really like this track. It's the most mysterious battle theme in the game, and it does a nice job of capturing that feeling during the battles with Phaedra and Pelagia. alexrowe19 - "Creeping Shadow" is good at what it does, makes you wonder what's around the next corner. I share the same opinion with Legend on this one. A messenger from Behind ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 01:52 Sample - Played During: Triumph Theme for Colossus #8 - Played when you solve Colossus puzzle Additional Info - Also used for Colossus battle #10 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Does a great job of conveying that feeling of being rushed while facing Dirge. It's also kind of unnerving, which is the exact feeling you would get if you were facing something that could dissapear one moment, and suddenly be right under your feet the very next. I like it. alexrowe19 - This song was an extra reason why I loved battling Kuromori, #8. Just like the title implies, the Colossi you battle with this song in the background seem to appear behind you from nowhere. >.< Counterattack ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 02:04 Sample - Played During: Triumph Theme for Colossus #10 - Played when you solve Colossus puzzle Additional Info - Also used for Colossus battle #13 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - This song, kind of like "The Opened Way," really establishes that epic feeling of being on top of a colossus. Although I don't like it as much as "The Opened Way," it's still an excellent triumph theme. alexrowe19 - This is my favourite triumph theme. It reminds me of one of the best battles in the game - pursuing Phalanx on Agro's back. It far surpasses "The Opened Way", in my opinion. Sky Burial Playing Time - 01:45 Sample - Played During: Hawk roaming cutscenes - When game is left on standby at main title screen Additional Info - PAL Version Only. "The Farthest Land" plays in NTSC version Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Well, in place of "The Farthest Land", PAL users get an excellent track of their own in "Sky Burial." Even though it is a little bit on the short side, I still love it. alexrowe19 - I prefer "Sky Burial" instead of "The Farthest Land". It's a nice little song that accompanies the Agro/Hawk scenes perfectly. A closed off City Playing Time - 00:30 Sample - Played During: Intro theme to Colossus #14 - Played when you reach Colossus location Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - A good introduction to Cenobia's area. alexrowe19 - A short and sweet intro track to one of the smallest Colossi... Liberated Guardian ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 02:07 Sample - Played During: Battle Theme for Colossus #11 - Played when you first see the Colossus Additional Info - Also used for Colossus battle #14 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I like this song, but it's kind of dire the whole way through. It does help accentuate the danger and tension of the battles. It serves its purpose in trying to say that the two smallest colossi (Celosia and Cenobia) are still just as dangerous, if not moreso, than the others. alexrowe19 - This theme just screams: "RUN" all over the place. It perfectly matches the smallest Colossi battle tones. It keeps you on your edge. A despair-filled Farewell ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 02:13 Sample - Played During: Battle/Triumph Theme for Colossus #5 Additional Info - Also used for Colossi battles #8, #11 and 14 Authors' Notes Legend 14 - One of my personal favorites. It's a battle theme at first, then it seamlessly changes to a swift triumph theme with vocals. It's a fast, loud and beautiful theme, and fits Avion's battle like a glove. alexrowe19 - I love this piece of music. It's like it was written with Avion in mind. Like Legend says, it fits its battle like a glove. The choir overtones are quite the best in the game soundtrack and the finale closes the track triumphantly. Prayer Playing Time - 01:51 Sample - Played During: Cutscene after Colossus #8 battle - When the wanderer walks to Mono's altar Game's ending sequence - Secret Garden scene, Pal the Squirrel appears Authors' Notes Legend 14 - A very soft, beautiful track. A great piano solo is complemented by some nice ambient background music. Works very well for a "halftime" track, as well as when the deer/squirrel enter the scene in the final part of the game. alexrowe19 - I love this piano solo. Very, very beautiful. Another plus for this song being Pal (the squirrel in the PAL version) appears when this track is playing. :P Swift Horse Playing Time - 01:45 Sample - Played During: Game's ending sequence - Played briefly at unlocked modes' screen Additional Info - Does not play in the NTSC version Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I'm not a huge fan of this track, since I think it's awfully repetitive, but I can see the appeal. It's a very booming, lively song. alexrowe19 - For some reason, apart from its title, this song reminds me of Agro. I like Agro so obviously I like this track as well. A battle-like march. Great finale. Gate Watcher of the castle ruins ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 02:03 Sample - Played During: Battle Theme for Colossus #15 - Played when you first see the Colossus Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - This is a very good battle theme. It does an excellent job at capturing that breathtaking, yet intimidating feeling while fighting Argus. (As a side note, when I first played him, I thought the music had kind of a Russian feel to it. Because of this, I refer to Argus, at least while talking to my friends, as "That Russian Guy.") alexrowe19 - One of my personal favourites. It feels very epic and the choir echoes make this (in my opinion) the most effective battle theme. Sanctuary Playing Time - 00:32 Sample - Played During: When gate to Colossus #16 is opened When the wanderer is transported to the Shrine of Worship, after battle #16 Additional Info : N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - This is a nice intro/exit to Malus' battle. alexrowe19 - One of the very few tracks I actually do not like. Demise of the Ritual ~ Battle with the Colossus ~ Playing Time - 02:20 Sample - Played During: Battle Theme for Colossus #16, until battle ends Game's ending sequence - When player assumes control of Dormin Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Even though many feel like Malus was a letdown, it can't be denied that his theme is truly remarkable. If there's a theme in this game that replicates the feeling of a dark, tense battle in a major Hollywood film, this would be it. This is one of my favorites, and that has a lot to do with the fact that it's different from every other battle theme on the OST. It takes its time, instead of rushing into the heat like some of the other themes. It clearly represents some dark evil, but the source is hard to identify. Is it the colossus itself which exudes this manner of malevolence? Does the magnitude of the colossus, coupled with the theme itself, serve as a constant reminder that this is, indeed, the final battle, and that the wanderer, or the player, has no idea what is to come? Yeah, Malus doesn't move much during the fight. He even unknowingly helps you up his massive body. But the dark storm, the battlefield, the colossus' salient figure in the distance, the beams of light coming down from the sky, and this song shape what is really a battle not of skill or any degree of difficulty, but one of sheer majestic, dark imagery, which will be part of every player's memory forever. In short: The song kicks ass! alexrowe19 - Woah! What can I say? Well, I'll tell you about my first time beating the game. I watched Agro falling down the river at 2AM and when I reached Malus this track kicked in. With thunders booming in the background and rain pouring down, this felt like the most epic battle I've ever had in a videogame. It's like the whole thing is bigger than you. I cannot think of any other, better song that could portray what I was feeling right then. I don't agree that this song represents any dark or evil nature. What I think it does say is: "This is the end." The wanderer knew what he was going through. He knew he was going to die. He could sense the shadows inside him. And the feeling of knowing you're going to die, knowing that your hour has arrived makes the whole thing seem less intimidating, less threatening. Up there, on Malus' head, being able to see the Shrine of Worship in the distance, knowing that the reason you're up there is in that temple waiting to be awakened... When the song ends / Malus is slayed, there's always a thought that comes in my mind: "It is done." "Demise of the Ritual" is the second best track on this CD, in my opinion. A Pursuer Playing Time - 00:30 Sample - Played During: Game's ending sequence - Lord Emon and his followers arrive at the Cursed Land's bridge Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Not that great of a song, and very short, but well used in the game. alexrowe19 - I really despise this song, probably because it's tied with Lord Emon and his followers coming to stop you from reviving Mono. Premonition of Revival Playing Time - 00:50 Sample - Played During: Game's ending sequence - Lord Emon and his followers arrive to find Idols crushed Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Again, I'm not a fan of pipe organs, but it's a fairly good track. alexrowe19 - This song marks the whole thing Wander does as a mistake, blasphemy against his peoples' beliefs. Quite well used and serves its purpose. Epilogue ~ Those who Remain ~ Playing Time - 07:09 Sample - Played During: Game's ending sequence - Played when game credits are rolling Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - The ending theme. When you make a game this good, you have to have a memorable track to finish it off. Kow Otani answered this nicely, combining elements from "Prologue to the Ancient Land," with some unheard ones, as well. An extraordinary adventure ends with a very well done finale. alexrowe19 - Quoting a certain movie, "Everything that has a beginning, has an end." This track mirrors the "Prologue", and ends up the game like it started - uncertainty and hope. Hope Playing Time - 02:10 Sample - Played During: Game's ending sequence - Mono and Agro entering Secret Garden scene Additional Info - N/A Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I didn't like the first half of the track, but the second half makes the song a lot brighter and better. The second half was the one used in the game, and rightfully so; while the first half of the song has a dark overtone, representing the darkness the wanderer's actions, the second half reinforces the whole "rebirth" element which the wanderer, Mono, and, in some ways, Agro, go through toward the end of the game. alexrowe19 - A soothing track, after the splendid ending theme. If I had to choose a word that describes this song it would be: "Answer". The sunlit Earth Playing Time - 01:31 Sample - Played During: Game's ending sequence Additional Info - Hawk roaming over Cursed Lands scene, flying away from the Shrine of Worship Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I love this song. It's a very nice track to play during the closing moments of the game, perhaps indicating that, along with the soaring hawk, there is hope on the horizon. alexrowe19 - This song is so beautiful. It's like it's trying to say that there's a new start, a new beginning behind the corner. Maybe it's so. Memories Playing Time - 01:21 Sample - Played During: Gallery menu in the Extras section Additional Info - PAL Version Only. Not available in any other version Authors' Notes Legend 14 - A nice piano solo. I just wish it would've made an appearance in the NTSC version. *sob* alexrowe19 - Yay, we PAL gamers got this song to play in the game. This piano solo accompanies the art gallery section. A good choice. Wilderness Playing Time - 00:28 Sample - Played During: Does not appear in the game Additional Info - Bonus Track included on CD Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I don't really like it. I really don't know where they would've put this in the game, so it's probably for the best that it was left out. alexrowe19 - I cannot imagine where they could put this song into the game. Well, maybe that's why they've left it out? Voice of the Earth Playing Time - 00:27 Sample - Played During: Does not appear in the game Additional Info - Bonus Track included on CD Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Interesting unused intro theme. This song had a shot at being a decent intro, but I can't imagine what colossus it would've suited very well. alexrowe19 - Like Legend says, this song could do well as an intro to a Colossus location. Maybe it was going to be used for one of the unused Colossi... Marshlands Playing Time - 00:30 Sample - Played During: Does not appear in the game Additional Info - Bonus Track included on CD Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Another interesting unused intro theme, but it feels different from some of the used themes in that it's too sonorous, or heavy, for the subtlety that most of the game's environments express. alexrowe19 - A little strong intro song left unused. It doesn't seem to fit the rest of the tracks though. Anger Playing Time - 01:52 Sample - Played During: Does not appear in the game Additional Info - Bonus Track included on CD Authors' Notes Legend 14 - I'm not really sure if this was meant to be a battle theme or an introduction, but it lacks the polish that the other themes have. alexrowe19 - It's too strong to be an intro song, but mellowish, at the same time, so it can't do as a battle theme... Final Battle Playing Time - 01:54 Sample - Played During: Does not appear in the game Additional Info - Bonus Track included on CD Authors' Notes Legend 14 - This battle theme doesn't have the same emotional impact that the other ones do, but that could be attributed to the fact that I've never actually battled a colossus with this playing in the background. alexrowe19 - This could do nicely if placed with some of the Colossi. A perfect example would be #15. But it's best to keep the one we have - it's much better - probably why it was left unused. The Farthest Land (Reprise) Playing Time - 03:21 Sample - Played During: Does not appear in the game Additional Info - Bonus Track included on CD Authors' Notes Legend 14 - Basically the same as the "The Farthest Land", only without the echo, which I think really enhanced the other version. This one seems more personal, more natural, and smaller in scope, and since this game is anything but small, I can see why the developers opted not to chose the reprise for the final version of the game. alexrowe19 - The reprise version of "The Farthest Land". If I had to choose, I'd choose the other one - but strangely this closes up the CD quite nicely, so I don't complain. ^_^ ~ Special Thanks, Acknowledgements and Credits [SC05] ~ Thanks to: Fumito Ueda and the development team behind Shadow of the Colossus for trying to achieve something no other development studio ever tried to achieve before.
