XENOSAGA II: JENSEITS VON GUT UND BOSE SKILLS/ETHER FAQ (v1.1, 7-12-04) by Edward Chang (chang.459 (at) osu.edu) Revision History v1.1 (7-12-04) Some minor corrections. v1.0 (7-6-04) First version. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introduction 2. Learning Skills 3. Skills List -Level 1 -Level 2 -Level 3 -Level 4 -Miscellaneous Skills 4. Secret Key List 5. Frequently Asked Questions 6. Credits 1. INTRODUCTION This is an FAQ for Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose, and it deals with the new Skill and Ether system. Unlike XSI, Skills and Ethers are consolidated into one system in XSII; learning skills is now done in a completely different fashion than from XSI (you no longer extract skills from equipment), and there are new things to pay attention to when deciding what skills or ethers to teach your characters. Since in XSII, your characters don't equip any equipment at all (no weapons, armor, accessories, nothing!) skills are pretty much the only thing that gives them any sort of edge over the enemies. This FAQ makes use of SJIS encoding in order to display Japanese characters. I included this feature so that if you do not know Japanese, you can easily match up the characters on your TV screen to the characters in this guide. You will need to have support for viewing Japanese characters on your computer, however. Certain versions of Windows should have it built in; otherwise, you'll either need to get a program like NJStar Communicator, or you'll need to get Japanese character support for Internet Explorer (free from Microsoft) and open this file in IE instead of Notepad/Wordpad. 2. LEARNING SKILLS Learning skills requires the spending of points, like in XSI. In XSII, there are two types of points: Class Points and Skill Points. Skills come arranged in levels and classes; Levels 1-3 come in Classes A-H, and Level 4 comes in Classes A-D. In order to learn a skill, you must first spend Class Points to unlock the Class that the skill belongs to. Then you must spend Skill Points to learn the skill itself. For instance, to learn the skill "Medica", which was Shion's healing ether in XSI, you must first spend 300 Class Points to unlock Level 1, Class A; then you must spend 200 Skill Points to learn Medica. Each Class has 4 different skills. Learning all of the skills in a particular Class gives you "Class Complete" status. This has two benefits. First, it allows you to learn the next higher Level of skills. Thus, if you teach a character all of the skills in Level 1, Class A (Medica, Refresh L, Poison R, and Black R), that character will now be able to learn Level 2 skills. Second, it gives your character a "Class Bonus" in Class Points, typically 1.5 times the number of points you needed to unlock the Class. Since Level 1, Class A requires 300 Class Points to unlock, getting Class Complete for 1-A gives that character 450 Class Points. This is important as Class Points are generally in short supply - while all enemies give Skill Points, generally only bosses will give Class Points. Thus, getting many Class Completes is the only major way to get your character to be able to open more Classes of skills. Also, whereas all of your characters gain experience after a battle, only the three active party members will gain any skill points. Aside from defeating enemies, there are also Class Drugs and Skill Drugs that can give a single character more of those respective points. Some skills are "secret" skills. These show up initially as just a bunch of question marks in the skills list, and you cannot learn them even if you spend the Class Points for that skill's Class. To enable learning them, you must find rare "Secret Keys" throughout the game. There are 31 Secret Keys in the game; see Section 4 for a list. There are also two miscellaneous skills in the game. These skills are not learned, but rather gained through special events. I have labelled these as "Miscellaneous Skills"; see the end of the Skills List for details. There are three types of skills: -Ether Skills have a green droplet icon and function like magic spells in most RPGs. Unlike Xenosaga I, you do not have to equip Ether Skills; any and all Ether Skills your character has learned will be available to cast from the Ether menu in battle. -Equip Skills are denoted by a red ring-like icon. These skills MUST be equipped via the Status menu to have any effect. Your characters have three slots to equip Equip Skills, although this number can be increased to four by learning a particular skill. -Learned Skills are denoted by the kanji character "shuu" (for 'shuutoku', learning). These skills are always active once you've learned them; there's no need to equip them. Think of them as like 'passive skills' from some other games. 3. SKILLS LIST Here is a list of all of the skills in the game, grouped by Level and Class. Each entry will have the name of the skill in English and Japanese (so those of you who don't know Japanese can follow along by seeing the characters), the type of skill, the ether point cost if applicable, the effects of the skill, and my comments on those skills. Secret skills will be denoted with the Secret Key required to learn that skill also listed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ LEVEL ONE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CLASS A - 300 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Medica メディカ - 200 Skill Points Ether (2 EP) Heals one character by a small amount. The amount is based on the user's EATK value, so MOMO will heal a lot more than Ziggy. Refresh L リフレッシュL - 150 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Has a chance of removing L-class status effects from one character. The chance of success is dependent on the character's EATK, so MOMO is a lot better at this than Ziggy. Poison R ポイズンR - 100 Skill Points Learned Increases poison resitance by 25%. Since once you learn it, you have it forever, you might as well learn it. Black R ブラックR - 100 Skill Points Learned Increases black resitance by 25%. Since once you learn it, you have it forever, you might as well learn it. CLASS B - 300 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Attacker アタッカー - 200 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Raises the caster's physical attack and lowers the caster's physical defense. Can be useful against enemies that only use ether attacks. Defender デフェンダー - 200 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Raises the caster's physical defense and lowers the caster's phyiscal attack. Valuable for characters like MOMO, since they'll be using mostly ether attacks anyway. STR+2 - 100 Skill Points Equip Raises STR by two points, thus increasing physical damage. CLASS C - 300 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Analyze アナライズ - 150 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Shows an enemy's weak points, HP, skill points, and item drops. Does not show Break zones. Memory メモリー - 100 Skill Points Learned Once you've figured out an enemy's Break zones, this skill will assist you by remembering their break zones for you and showing them in the status box whenever you come up against the enemy again. You don't NEED this skill ever, but you might as well, since it's only 100 points. EATK+2 - 150 Skill Points Equip Raises EATK by two points, thus increasing ether damage. EDEF+2 - 150 Skill Points Equip Raises EDEF by two points, thus increasing ether defense. CLASS D - 300 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Shave Eye シェイブアイ - 150 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Reduces the hit and dodge rates of B/G class enemies. CLASS H - 600 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Psycho Pocket サイコポケット - 300 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #1 Steals an item from an enemy. This skill is an absolute must-have, as there are several rare items in the game that you can only get by stealing. You should get this skill as soon as you can, which is as soon as you start the G2 Campaign (see the section of Secret Keys for more info). Break B10 ブレイクB10 - 400 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #2 Improves Break damage by 10%. Kikou 1 (Ki Power 1) 気功1 - 600 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #3 When using Stock, regenerate 10% of max EP. This stacks with EP Regen. Aura Veil オーラヴェール - 300 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Reduces the damage taken from aura/beam by 25% for one character. Not too many enemies use Aura, but you also get Beam defense for a two-in-one. CLASS B - 600 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Ice Sword アイスソード - 300 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Adds ice attribute to a character's non-elemental attacks. Useless for Ziggy/Chaos as their attacks are all fire/aura elemental, respectively. Flare Sword フレアソード - 300 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Adds fire attribute to a character's non-elemental attacks. Useless for Ziggy/Chaos as their attacks are all fire/aura elemental, respectively. Thunder Sword サンダーソード - 300 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Adds thunder attribute to a character's non-elemental attacks. Useless for Ziggy/Chaos as their attacks are all fire/aura elemental, respectively. Aura Sword オーラソード - 300 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Adds aura attribute to a character's non-elemental attacks. Useless for Ziggy/Chaos as their attacks are all fire/aura elemental, respectively. CLASS C - 600 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Reverto リバトー - 600 Skill Points Ether (20 EP) Raises a dead character and heals them 25% HP. A must-learn skill, especially for MOMO (since any ethers she learns can be used by the ES Zebulun). Medica 2 メディカ2 - 600 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Heals one character's HP, for more than Medica does. Based on EATK, so MOMO heals a lot more than Ziggy. Another must-learn skill, especially for MOMO. Medica All メディカオール - 600 Skill Points Ether (10 EP) Heals all party members for an amount about equivalent to Medica. Quite useful, though not as necessary as Medica 2 or Reverto. Koutai (Antibody) 抗体 - 400 Skill Points Ether (6 EP) Raises a character's status effect resistances by 10%. Has limited use. CLASS D - 600 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Attack One アッタクワン - 500 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #5 Adds one stock to a character. HP Mind 10 HPマインド10 - 500 Skill Points Learned Adds 10% to any healing that character receives. Doesn't seem like much, but it helps. ST Mind 10 STマインド10 - 400 Skill Points Learned Adds 10% to the status effect recovery chance for a character. Also fairly helpful. Rare +10 レア+10 - 600 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #6 Raises the chances of rare item drops by 10%. Not very useful thanks to the existence of Rare Steal (see the Frequently Asked Questions section). CLASS E - 600 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Heavy R ヘビーR - 200 Skill Points Learned Increases heavy resitance by 25%. Since once you learn it, you have it forever, you might as well learn it. Weak R ウィークR - 200 Skill Points Learned Increases weak resitance by 25%. Since once you learn it, you have it forever, you might as well learn it. Class F - 600 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Ether Spear エーテルスピア - 400 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Raises the caster's ether attack and lowers the caster's ether defense. Can be quite useful for MOMO or KOS-MOS. Ether Shield エーテルシールド - 400 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Raises the caster's ether defense and lowers the caster's ether attack. Useful for characters like Ziggy or Jr., who aren't going to be doing much in the way of ether attacks. Ponkotsu Beam (Junk Beam) ポンコツビーム - 500 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #7 Cancels an M-class enemy's next turn with a chance of 20%. Not very useful; if it affected more than one enemy, or if the chances were better than 20%, this might have been good, but sadly it isn't. Miracle Star ミラクルスター - 400 Skill Points Ether (8 EP) Non-elemental attack on an enemy. Can be ok for enemies weak against ether attacks but not a specific element; however the damage in general is low. CLASS G - 600 CLASS POINTS -------------------------- Ice Coat アイスコート - 400 Skill Points Equip Increases resistance to ice elemental attacks by 25%. Unlike the Veils, this is permanent, but it takes up a slot. Flare Coat フレアコート - 400 Skill Points Equip Increases resistance to fire elemental attacks by 25%. Unlike the Veils, this is permanent, but it takes up a slot. Thunder Coat サンダーコート - 400 Skill Points Equip Increases resistance to thunder elemental attacks by 25%. Unlike the Veils, this is permanent, but it takes up a slot. Aura Coat オーラコート - 400 Skill Points Equip Increases resistance to aura elemental attacks by 25%. Unlike the Veils, this is permanent, but it takes up a slot. CLASS H - 1200 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Boost One ブーストワン - 1200 Skill Points Ether (8 EP) Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #8 Raises the boost gauge by one. Kakuchou Pack+1 (Expand Pack+1) 拡張パック+1 - 1000 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #9 Adds one slot to the character's equipable skills, raising the total from 3 to 4. ESSENTIAL SKILL TO LEARN! Learn it ASAP. Meikyoushisui (Clear and Serene) 明鏡止水 - 1500 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #10 When using Stock, character's dodge rate increases until the next turn. Quite a useful skill. STAResist 2 STAレジスト2 - 1200 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #11 Resistances to all status effects raised 20%. Very useful against some enemies, although it may not warrant burning a slot on it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ LEVEL THREE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CLASS A - 1200 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Refresh H リフレッシュH - 800 Skill Points Ether (6 EP) Has a chance of removing H-class status effects from one character. The chance of success is dependent on the character's EATK, so MOMO is a lot better at this than Ziggy. Safety セフティー - 1000 Skill Points Ether (20 EP) Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #12 When cast on a character, that character will remain at one HP instead of dying the next time they take lethal damage. STMind 15 STマインド15 - 600 Skill Points Learned Resistance to all status effects raised 15%. Very useful as it doesn't need a slot. Limiter Up リミッターアップ - 1500 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #13 Max HP and EP raised by 10%. CLASS B - 1200 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Blade Coat ブレードコート - 500 Skill Points Equip Damage taken from slashing attacks reduced by 25%. CLASS C - 1200 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Hakki (Ki Release) 発気 - 800 Skill Points Ether (8 EP) Caster sacrifices half his current HP to clear all status effects. Not terribly useful. Double Power ダブルパワー - 1000 Skill Points Equip Status boosts a character receives are doubled. Good in conjunction with Attacker, Defender, and so on. Last Revenge ラストリベンジ - 1200 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #15 For one time only, when the character dies he is instead preserved at 1 HP, does a counter boost, and gains full stock. CLASS D - 1200 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Stun R スタンR - 400 Skill Points Learned Increases stun resitance by 25%. Since once you learn it, you have it forever, you might as well learn it. Lost R ロストR - 400 Skill Points Learned Increases lost resitance by 25%. Since once you learn it, you have it forever, you might as well learn it. Poison EPR ポイズンEPR - 400 Skill Points Learned Increases poison EP resitance by 25%. CLASS E - 1200 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Quick クイック - 1200 Skill Points Ether (10 EP) Raises a character's speed (the rate of their turns) by 25%. Charge Time チャージタイム - 800 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) The next time caster is healed, they are healed twice the normal amount. CRTC +5 - 800 Skill POints Equip Chance of criticals goes up 5%. Not that good, would've been better as a Learned skill. First Combo ファーストコンボ - 1000 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #16 When battle begins, character begins with one stock. Can be useful for getting a head start on the enemy. CLASS F - 1200 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Inori (Prayer) 祈り - 1200 Skill Points Ether (16 EP) Receive a random item as a gift. The following items appear to be possible: Aquazist S Aquazist M Rosezist S Leafzist L Leafzist H Space Tent Skill Drug D Skill Drug E Since you can get valuable Skill Drug E (Skill Points +500), this can be worthwhile, although boring. Break B15 ブレイクB15 - 1500 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #17 Improves Break damage by 15%. Revenge Power リベンジパワー - 1500 Skill Points Equip When character receives a critical hit, has a 25% chance of Counter Boosting. Only works on single attacks (attacks hitting all party members doesn't count). Not that useful as the hit must be a critical, and even then it only activates 25% of the time. Rare +30 レア+30 - 1800 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #18 Raises the chances of rare item drops by 30%. Not very useful thanks to the existence of Rare Steal (see the Frequently Asked Questions section). CLASS G - 1200 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Misty ミスティー - 1000 Skill Points Ether (6 EP) Prevents a B/G class enemy from using ethers. Not widely useful as most enemies rely on their own special attacks and not castable ethers... still, can be useful against some enemies. Shinshoku (Erosion) 侵食 - 800 Skill Points Ether (4 EP) Reduces a B/G class enemy's resistance to status effects. Guard Point ガードポイント - 800 Skill Points Learned Damage taken when defending is reduced a further 20%. Ether Burst エーテルバースト - 1800 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #19 Ether attacks do double damage, but the amount of EP needed is doubled. Can be very useful to MOMO, Shion, or KOS-MOS, since they have naturally high ether attack and high EP totals to begin with. CLASS H - 2400 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Point UP10 ポイントUP10 - 3600 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #20 Skill Points earned up 10%. Keikenne UP10 (Experience UP10) 経験値UP10 - 3600 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #21 Experience Points earned up 10%. Combo Boost コンボブースト - 3600 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #22 Can boost even if already in the turn queue. Somewhat useful if on Ziggy or Chaos and going for those long elemental chains, but it takes up a slot that could perhaps be used for better things. EP Half EPハーフ - 3600 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #23 Reduces EP consumption by one-half. Very useful, especially for Shion (if she's going to be casting Erdekaiser...) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ LEVEL FOUR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CLASS A - 2400 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Tenchi (Heaven and Earth) 天地 - 2400 Skill Points Ether (18 EP) Strong aura-elemental attack on all enemies. Imashime (Binding) 戒め - 4000 Skill Points Ether (18 EP) Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #24 Causes Imashime status on one enemy; for the next three turns, all damage dealt by that enemy is also dealt to it. Extremely useful against certain bosses (yes, it works on most bosses); trying to have it always active on a boss cuts down on battle time a lot. Damage10 ダメージ10 - 4000 Skill Points Equip All damage reduced by 10%. Cool concept, but the returns are actually a little small for having spent a slot on it. Samurai Soul サムライソウル - 3200 Skill Points Equip When an ally dies, attack power increases. Useful for certain boss strategies. CLASS B - 2400 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Messatsujin (Circle of Destruction) 滅殺陣 - 2800 Skill Points Ether (18 EP) Non-elemental damage to an enemy, and all beneficial status effects removed. Very useful against enemies that like to buff themselves. Kikou 2 (Ki Power 2) 気功2 - 4800 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #25 When using Stock, regenerate 15% of max EP. This stacks with EP Regen. Loss AGL ロスAGL - 2400 Skill Points Learned The delay until your next turn that normally occurs when casting an ether no longer occurs. Knight Soul ナイトソウル - 3200 Skill Points Equip When an ally dies, defense power increases. Not as useful as Samurai Soul. CLASS C - 2400 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Overload オーバーロード - 3600 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #26 When using Stock, have a 50% chance of gaining 2 Stock. STAResist 3 STAレジスト3 - 3200 Skill Points Equip All status effect resistances up 30%. Can be good against status-happy bosses. ST Double STダブル - 2800 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #27 Status effects last twice as long. Careful, this affects both positive and negative effects. HP Mind 15 HPマインド15 - 2400 Skill Points Learned Adds 15% to any healing that character receives. Doesn't seem like much, but it helps, especially in conjunction with HP Mind 10. CLASS D - 4800 CLASS POINTS --------------------------- Saiai no Kachi (Beloved Pupil) 最愛の徒 - 9600 Skill Points Ether (60 EP) Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #28 The next time a character dies, he is revived to full health automatically. Good, but prohibitive EP cost. Point UP15 ポイントUP15 - 7200 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #29 Skill Points earned up 15%. Keikenne UP15 (Experience UP15) 経験値UP15 - 7200 Skill Points Learned Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #30 Experience Points earned up 15%. Mikiri (Evasion) 見切り - 8000 Skill Points Equip Secret Skill: Requires Secret Key #31 When using Stock, if an enemy attack is guarded or evaded, that character has a 50% chance of Counter Boosting. Nice concept, expensive skill though. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MISCELLANEOUS SKILLS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mizugi (Swimsuit) 水着 Equip Character receives +1 AGL, 10% bonus on skill points, but 10-15% bonus on received damage. Also changes the character's in-battle graphics. Insanely useful skill for the AGL +1 alone. This skill must be earned individually for each character: KOS-MOS/Ziggy: Start the game with a Xenosaga I clear file on your memory card. Shion/Chaos: Complete G2 Campaign #25. Jr./MOMO: Complete G2 Campaign #7. Jin: Complete G2 Campaign #32. Erdekaiser Retsu エルデカイザー烈 Ether (50 EP) Castable by Shion only. Summons Erdekaiser to attack all enemies with an ether attack. There are actually three variants of this ether, one slash, one pierce, and one thunder. To earn this skill, you must collect all 6 of the robot parts (head, torso, 2 arms, and 2 legs), then take them to Hakase on the Elza. 4. If I miss a Secret Key, can I go back and get it? A. If the Key comes from a Segment Address or a Treasure chest, yes. If it comes from a G2 Campaign, the answer is only if you haven't tried that G2 Campaign quest yet. If you tried it and failed, you can't get the Secret Key. Q. What are Double Ethers? A. Certain ethers can be combined using Boost. To use a double ether, use a boost, then access the Ether menu. Now press Triangle over an ether. If that ether can be used in a double ether, another menu will pop up with the new ether. For instance, if the turn is currently on Shion, and I boost MOMO, and if Shion and MOMO both have learned Medica, I can now press Triangle over Medica to access Double Medica, which casts Medica on all characters. In most cases, combining two identical ethers makes that ether affect all allies or all enemies instead of just one. The following ethers can be combined in this manner: Medica Medica 2 Refresh L Refresh H Shave Eye Shave Power Shave Body Shave Brain Shave Aura Break Sensor Break Arm Break Armor Break Beam Break Shield Ponkotsu Beam Misty Ice Veil Fire Veil Thunder Veil Aura Veil Ice Blast Fire Blast Thunder Blast Aura Blast Miracle Star There are also four special combinations of different ethers that yields different effects. They are as follows: Ice Burst (Ice Blast + Aura Blast): More powerful ice damage on one enemy. Fire Burst (Fire Blast + Aura Blast): More powerful fire damage on one enemy. Thunder Burst (Thunder Blast + Aura Blast): More powerful thunder damage on one enemy. Rare Steal (Analyze + Psycho Pocket): 100% chance of stealing an enemy's rare item. RARE STEAL IS VERY IMPORTANT! Certain items in the game can only be obtained as rare steals from bosses; the Rare Steal skill will thus save you much time and frustration by eliminating the need to continuously save and reload so that the boss will drop something. Q. How many skills can I equip at once? A. Three. Four once you've learned Expand Pack+1. Q. Everybody has the same skills? A. That's right. Unlike XSI, where Medica was 'primarily' Shion's skill, in XSII absolutely anyone can learn Medica right off the bat. The only exception is Erdekaiser Retsu, which is exclusive to Shion. 6.
