/===========================================================================\ [ ] [ ] [ Evangelion: Jo ] [ ] [ For Sony Playstation 2 and Sony Playstation Portable ] [ ] [ Walkthrough ] [ ] [ Written by Grandmaster Meio ] [ ] [ ] \===========================================================================/ [ Introduction ] This walkthrough is based on a lot of trial-and-error and guesswork, because my japanese-reading skills aren't very good. So, I couldn't delve more into the character relationship system. This walkthrough will only cover the battles. Also, this guide was based on the PS2 version of the game, but both versions are identical. If you're playing the PSP version, just switch R1 and L1 with R and L. =============================================================================== System =============================================================================== ================= a) Controls ================= [ In-battle ] X: Roll []:Interact with pills O: Shoot with weapon/combo with melee weapon /\: Melee attack (with any weapon) R1 (neutral): Guard R1 (moving): Dash L1: Lock-on Left analog: Move D-Pad: Move Camera Start: Pause/info /\ while in Lock-on: Manual Aim D-Pad while in Lock-on: Section Aim (same as manual aim, but you can move) [ Shinji ] Left analog: Move /\: Menu O: Interact with people []: Interact with people (brings question list) ==================== b) Advanced Controls ==================== Discard Weapon ----------------- To discard your weapon, hold R1 and press /\+O. You'll equip the Progressive Knife in its place. Detach Cable ----------------- If you're connected to the Umbilical Cable, hold R1 and press []+X do detach it. If you're wondering what's the use of this, it makes your Synchro Rate go up by 10%. Banish AT Field ----------------- When an enemy is guarding (it looks just like you guarding), go near it and hold R1 to hold onto its AT Field. You'll enter a trial to weaken the enemy's AT Field. Just hold R1 until you can, or the enemy stops guarding. Parry/Just Defense ------------------- Press R1 right before the enemy's attack is about to hit. Your AT Field will glow white, it doesn't matter at what strength it is. ================= c) Mechanics ================= Your AT Field ---------------- Your AT Field serves a lot of purposes: defense, HP regen, and your "AP" for doing maneuvers. Guarding, Dashing or Rolling costs some AT Field bar. If your AT Field bar empties, it glows red and will need a lot of time to recover. During this time, you can't block, dash or roll, you take more damage and the red portion of your HP won't recover. Enemy AT Field ----------------- The enemy AT Field works like a passive shield. You can only directly target the life of the Angel once you Banish its AT Field, indicated by its AT Field breaking in half. Once this happens, any damage you do to the Angel will affect its life directly. AT Field Colors ----------------- Both your and the enemy's AT Fields have a color system to represent its strength. You can see the enemy AT Field color when it guards your attack, when you try to banish it, or more subtly, when you shoot at it. On this last case, you'll see the enemy blink rapidly in the color of the strength of its AT Field. The colors are: - White: Very Strong - Blue: Strong - Green: Normal - Yellow: Caution - Red: AT Field banished Pills -------------------- PILLS! These structures are resources that you can put in the map to help in your battle. There are 4 kinds of pills, and every pill has three levels. The levels only change the durability of the building (I think). - Red: Assist fire pill. This is a building that assists you by shooting at the enemy. There are three kinds of red pills: Turret (fires machine gun shots), Missile (fires missiles) and ASROC (fires ASROCs - Anti-Submarine Rockets). - Yellow: Umbilical Cable pill. This building connects the EVA to the power grid of Tokyo-3, giving it no operational time limit. If the building is destroyed or your get hit with a critical, your Umbilical Cable is cut and you have either to reconnect it by going to the building and pressing [], or finish the mission in the time limit of 3 minutes. - Green: Weapon pill. This building contains a weapon of your choice. This weapon only has one use, so if you get it from a building, you can only get another from the same building in the next fight. Note that on the Story fights, once you use a weapon, it is discarded and you must buy another one. On Simulation fights, the weapons stay even after use. - Purple: Information pill. This building makes an analysis of the enemy and gives the feedback to your screen. Basically, it shows the enemy HP and AT Field. However, note that the analysis takes some time to complete. You can see the progress by pressing Start. Once the percentage hits 100%, you get the enemy stats when you're near it. If you press Start after analysis is complete, you see some sort of "weak point", although I don't know if this works. The pills are bought from Misato, by choosing the first option when talking to her. More on that later. Also, when a pill is destroyed, you have to buy another one to put on its place. Skills ------------------ You buy skills from Ritsuko. The skills change the stats of your EVA, and each skill has 3 levels. One level takes up one slot, two levels take two slots, and so on. There are 10 available slots. The skills are, from top to bottom: Yellow: Dash Light Orange: Dodge (rolling) Orange: Critical (critical rate with weapons) Red (1st): Melee attack damage Red (2nd): Ranged attack damage (also Reloads faster) Light Purple: Lock (lock-on from far away and shots don't miss as much) Purple: AT Field Damage (I suppose this makes you Banish the enemy AT Field faster) Dark Blue: Guard (the guard gets stronger) Blue: Hayflick (HP regen) Light blue: Armor Green: The time limit of operational control (when you're not connected to the cable) rises up. ================== Options ================== When you bring the question list of a character ([]), some of them have options marked as green words. Misato 1st option: a) Buy pills b) Place Pills 2nd option: Repair Tokyo-3 areas (this doesn't seem to affect anything inside the battle...) Maya 1st option: Simulations 2nd option: Cure pilot. If Shinji, Rei or Asuka are bandaged, it removes the bandages - this only affects dialogue. Shigeru 1st option (not always available): No idea. But I think it shows how many Angels are left. Hyuga 1st option: Buy weapons. Ritsuko 1st option: Skill Program a) Buy Skills b) Set Skills 2nd option: Repair EVA units Kensuke 1st option: Relationship ranking (you need to score some points with him first) Touji 1st option: Synchro rate +10% (only one time, needs to score some points with him first) =============================================================================== Walkthrough =============================================================================== [ Notes ] - To skip cutscenes, press Select. - To repair an EVA, talk to Ritsuko and choose the second option. If there is more than one option, it's because more than one EVA is damaged. Strangely though, you only use EVA-01... - If you don't repair the EVAs after they finish a battle with less than 50% health, they are repaired automatically for the next battle, but only up to 50% HP. - To save your game, go to Misato's Mansion (last location in the menu) and choose the first option. - The locations are, from top to bottom: 1) NERV Central: You talk to Misato, Maya, Shigeru and Hyuga here. 2) Cage: You start missions here. You can also talk to most characters here. 3) Ritsuko's Office: You talk to Ritsuko here. 4) Streets (1): Some of Shinji's classmates appear here. 5) Streets (2): Useless chatter. 6) Misato's Mansion: You can save the game, talk to Pen Pen, or advance the story here. [ Battle 1 ] Enemy: Sachiel (3rd Angel) Area: Central Tokyo-3 Misato will ask you to move around (analog stick) at first. After the scene, complete the QTEs. * The final QTE seems to give people a lot of trouble. I haven't really looked into it as much as I wanted, but you HAVE to mash O to pass. I don't know if there's a rhythm or something, just do it as fast as you can. I guess this was an error on their part, since there are more QTEs where you have mash O on the game, but they're nowhere as hard as this one. * Update: I looked into it again, and it seems this is a controller issue. Since the Dual Shock 2 (in the case of a PS2) has analog buttons (sensible to pressure), the game mistakenly attributes a "clear" push of a button only when you push it all the way down. In other words, mash HARD and fast. From now on, whenever you are in EMERGENCY status, go to the EVA Cage (2nd location), go near EVA-01 and press O to begin the mission. [ Battle 2 ] Enemy: Shamshel (4th Angel) Area: West Tokyo-3 Just attack it normally until you get the QTEs to finish the fight. * From now on, you can advance the story by going to Misato's Mansion and choosing the topmost option (if Pen Pen is in the house, then it is the 2nd option). Whenever you see the ADVANCE marker on the guide, you need to use this option to go to the next fight. ADVANCE ADVANCE [ Battle 3 ] Enemy: Ramiel (5th Angel) QTEs, QTEs, QTEs. After you fire the first shot and Rei blocks the counterattack, you have to aim manually (align the markers in the middle). After this battle, you finish the Evangelion 1.0 part and the credits roll. From now on, the story is from the anime. ADVANCE [ Battle 4 ] Enemy: Jet Alone (Failure Super Robot) QTEs, scenes and such. Remember when EVA was a happy robot show? ADVANCE [ Battle 5 ] Enemy: Gaghiel (6th Angel) You finally control EVA-02, but the battle is just QTEs. It takes 5 hits to end the battle. ADVANCE [ Battle 6 ] Enemy: Israfel (7th Angel) Area: North Tokyo-3 Go to the central area of Tokyo 3, and fight the Angel there. I think the QTE only activates if you're there. ADVANCE [ Battle 7 ] Enemy: Sandalphon (8th Angel) More QTEs, just like the first Asuka battle. However, now there are 3 QTEs to complete an attack. Like the other fight, you need to perform 5 attacks to finish the enemy off. ADVANCE [ Battle 8 ] Enemy: Matariel (9th Angel) Area: East Tokyo-3 If you're having trouble defeating it, go to Central Tokyo-3, because the QTEs only seem to activate there. ADVANCE [ Battle 9 ] Enemy: Sahaquiel (10th Angel) Area: Center Tokyo-3 This one is pretty difficulty to figure out. Do you see the red "fog" on the minimap? The fog will disappear a fraction at a time. When the time limit is almost over, there will be only one place with the fog. Go there and press R1 to start the QTE and end the battle. * Don't mistake the fog with the coverage area of a Turret/Missile/ASROC pill. The fog is stronger, while the coverage of these pills is weaker. ADVANCE [ Battle 10 ] Enemy: Iruel (11th Angel) Not a battle, just a bunch of QTEs. If counter-hacking was this easy... ADVANCE [ BATTLE 11 ] Enemy: Leliel (12th Angel) Area: South Tokyo-3 Equip just a Progressive Knife for this. What you have to do here is run up to the Angel, attack once and retreat until the Angel stops blinking. Then attack once more. Repeat this until you break its AT Field. Then, the Angel will hide into a hole in the floor. Run up to this hole, wait until it starts blinking red, then do a full combo. Repeat until it emerges from the floor, and do phase 1 all over again. After another round, the fight ends and you need to do some QTEs. ADVANCE [ Battle 12 ] Enemy: Bardiel (13th Angel) Area: North Tokyo-3 It's easier to go to the central Tokyo-3 to defeat this Angel, since it's pretty strong. You need all the support you can get. * Now you have access to another area in the map, the Geofront. [ Battle 13 ] Enemy: Zeruel (14th Angel) Area: Geofront This one is pretty easy even if you go knife-only. There are no gimmicks in this battle. Just shoot 'till they drop. ADVANCE ADVANCE [ Battle 14 ] Enemy: Arael (15th Angel) Area: Central Tokyo-3 Run around dodging the attacks until the enemy is shot down. ADVANCE [ Battle 15 ] Enemy: Armisael (16th Angel) Area: East Tokyo-3 You can't change areas here, so put every resource in the east area for now. ADVANCE ADVANCE [ Battle 16 ] Enemy: EVA-02 Area: Terminal Dogma You can't put any pills here, so bring a strong weapon. I suggest a Positron Rifle or the final weapon (the one that costs 600000). Strangely, it doesn't seem to matter if you miss the QTE at the end. ADVANCE [ Battle 17 ] Enemies: 9 EVA-Series Area: Geofront This is the final battle, so the game will prompt you to make some preparations first. The options are: MAP GIMMICKS SKILL PROGRAM BATTLE Choose the 3rd option once you're ready. This fight determines what ending you get. You're supposed to lose this fight, since it plays the normal ending from End of Evangelion. Normal Ending: Lose. Good Ending: Win. If you don't want to waste any time, just lose and be done with it. You can get more money on subsequent playthroughs to win here. BUT, if you want to win, you can, you just need to make some precise preparations, and stock up on patience. Here's what I did: 1) Level Geofront up until it gets 5 slots (you can level the place up by fighting on it, even on Simulations). 2) Buy a Level 3 yellow pill (costs 300000) and put it on Geofront. Don't put it right in the middle, or it might get attacked a lot. 3) Buy 4 or 5 of the final weapon (the one that costs 600000) and put 3 or 4 on green pills on Geofront, and give one to EVA-01 (so you start with it). 4) Get the skills Level 3 Critical, Level 3 Melee, and Level 3 Armor. Also, put Level 1 Hayflick to recover lost health over time. Now, onto the fight. What you'll do is wait for an opening in the enemy's attack, and strike it three times with your physical attack. Do it until you break the enemy's AT Field. Then, shoot the enemy with the weapon. It takes 4 or 5 shots to destroy one enemy. Once the weapon turns red from continuous use, shoot all bullets on the enemy's AT Field and go grab another weapon. Remember to only strike with physical attacks. I only had 4 weapons on my playthrough, so I used each weapon to down 3 of the enemies. When I reached the 9th and last enemy, I discarded the overused 3rd weapon and got the last one, brand new. One thing to note is that, from the 7th to the 9th enemy, you get a QTE to finish it off faster (not that it helps too much). It took me 30~40 minutes to finish this fight, for your information. After you win/lose, you get the ending and the credits roll. You can make a Clear Save, which can be used to start a new game (load this save on Continue) with all your skills, weapons and resources. If you want to know what the Good Ending is about, scroll to the ending of this file. Some spoilers. =============================================================================== Things needed =============================================================================== Well now. Even though I'm not touching the relationship system, there are some things that I still need to know about the game, to make this guide more complete. - In the Character Status screen, what's the first status? - What's exactly the purple skill? Since it says "AT Field Damage", I suppose it's for breaking AT Fields faster. Any help is greatly appreciated, and I'll fully credit it. =============================================================================== Thanks and Contact Info =============================================================================== - To GAINAX who created the anime, to Hideaki Anno who directed it, and to the folks who created this game. - To Mr. Joseph, who sent me info on what ASROC means. If you have any questions, corrections, criticism or information, e-mail me at: mastermeioh@gmail.com . . . . . . . . . . . . . SPOILERS! . . . . . . . . . . You've been warned. What happens in the good ending (at least the good ending that I got) is Maya announcing the EVA-Series was defeated, and Fuyutsuki is surprised. Then, the same scene from End of Evangelion happens, with Gendou asking Rei to start the Third Impact for him. Rei still refuses him and goes away, but it deviates from End of EVA here. Instead of beginning Third Impact, it shows Shinji inside EVA-01, talking to himself normally, and Rei opening the hatch to his Entry Plug. She has a nice chat with Shinji, and it cuts back to Gendou talking to Fuyutsuki, in the hangar. Fuyutsuki says how everything failed, and how they should continue with their lives - if it failed it wasn't so important anyway. Then Rei and Shinji walk away together, and it ends with the words: "THANK YOU, MOTHER" "THANK YOU, FATHER" I don't know if this good ending changes based on your relationships (that's what I read from magazines before the game was released), but I had good relationships with everyone.
