Golf Terms and Lingo: Here are some terms and lingo you may not recognize if you're unfamiliar with the sport/game of golf. General Terms: These are terms you're likely to hear when talking about golf. STROKE - Hitting the ball, also called a shot or swing. FADE - Hitting the ball so it starts of to the left and curves to the right, same thing as left sidespin. DRAW - Hitting the ball so it starts of to the right and curves to the left, same thing as right sidespin FAIRWAY - The shorter grass, this is where you want to be on your way to the green because you can hit the ball unhindered. ROUGH - Taller grass bordering the fairway. As the grass is taller it can often make it more difficult to hit the ball cleanly. GREEN - The putting surface where the hole is located. LIE - Where your ball sits. For example if your lie could be in the fairway, the rough, a sandtrap, on the green, etc. HOLE (also called the cup) - Exactly what it says a hole, the goal of golf is to put the ball in the hole. PIN (also called the flagstick) - A metal pole stuck into the hole to the location of the hole from a distance. Scoring Terms: Remember in golf fewer strokes is ALWAYS better. PAR - The number of shots a hole should take to complete. For example a par 4 should be completed in four (4) shots. HOLE IN ONE (also called "acing a hole")- To finish a hole in one (1) stroke. DOUBLE EAGLE (also called an ALBATROSS) - To finish a par 5 in two (2) strokes. These can only be accomplished on par 5 holes. Lowest probability shot in golf as it can only be accomplished on par 5's. EAGLE - To finish a hole in two (2) less strokes than par. For example to eagle on a par 4 you would need to finish in two (2) strokes. BIRDIE - To finish a hole in one (1) less stroke than par. For example to birdie on a par 4 you would need to finish in three (3) strokes. BOGEY - To finish a hole in one (1) more stroke than par. For example to bogey on a par 4 you would need to finish in five (5) strokes. DOUBLE BOGEY - To finish a hole in two (2) more strokes than par. For example to bogey on a par 4 you would need to finish in six (6) strokes. TRIPLE BOGEY - To finish a hole in three (3) more strokes than par. For example to bogey on a par 4 you would need to finish in seven (7) strokes. QUADRUPLE BOGEY - To finish a hole in four (4) more strokes than par. For example to bogey on a par 4 you would need to finish in eight (8) strokes. +(insert number) - Finishing a hole in 5 or more strokes will result in a score of +(insert number). For example if you finished +12 it means you took twelve (12) more strokes than par to finish a hole. ============= 3. Shots: There are various "special" shots that can be performed by pressing different direction combinations while setting shot power and accuracy. Rising and Homing shots are available when you obtain a character's second (2nd) loyalty heart. Spiral shots become available after obtaining a character's fourth (4th) loyalty heart. To perform any of these shots PERFECT IMPACT is necessary. Super sidepsin left = Spiral shot - Hold left when setting shot power, then hold right when setting impact. Perfect impact is necessary. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can you play Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee with two (2) people and only one (1) PSP? A: No, there is no gameplay mode for two (2) players to play a round of golf on one (1) PSP. Q: Is there online play for Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee? A: The short answer is no it isn't supported. Only ad-hoc (people within range of the PSP) is possible. HOWEVER, It is possible to play online with someone across the country or world for that matter with a piece of software called XLink: Kai. All it requires is that you have a computer, internet access, and some kind of wireless access. It's free and contains no spyware, more information can be found at http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/ Q: Want to play over xlink kai? A: Sure, leave me a post on the Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee board at gamefaqs.com and we can set up a match or if we can get more people a tournament. Q: How do i win with a called game and what pleasant surprise do i get for winning a VS match with a called game? A: To win with a called game you need to be up 3 at any time in VS or match play. If you win a VS match with a called game you unlock that characters fifth (5th) loyalty heart. So if you beat Alia with a called game she will now have a maximum of five (5) loyalty hearts to max out. Q: Help! I can't advance from (insert) challenge mode level because no stars are available! What do i do? A: There will be times that of the three (3) available matches/tournaments none will give you a star if you win. If this happens Just keep on playing matches/tournaments eventually a match/tournament will come up that will give you a star. It's pretty random so don't worry about it, just keep playing it'll come up. Q: I just received Head/Body/Acce. Piece and it said that Power/Control/Spin was increased. What character does this go to? Do i need to equip the item for the increase? A: It goes to your entire profile so there is no need to equip any item for the stat boost. Anytime you increase a level in Power/Control/Spin it increases for every character you have access to. This means you could wear your default items and still get the stat boost Q: Is there a maximum that i can increase my stats to? A: Yes, the maximum level you can reach in Power/Control/Spin is 10. If you obtain all items for every level you should hit level 10 in all 3 stats approximately 25% through the Platinum Challenge Level. Q: How many caddies are there, who are they, how do i unlock them, and what do they do? A: There are five (5) caddies, Mari, Debby, Mr. K, Lisa, and Jon. Mari and Debby are available from the start and the other three need to be unlocked through the challenge mode levels. Mr. K is unlocked after clearing the novice challenge level, Lisa is unlocked after clearing the grand challenge level, and Jon is unlocked after you clear Gold. The caddies are only there for commentary. You never see them unfortunately. Q: Is there a way i can manually save replays of my choice? A: Yes, after clearing the novice challenge level, it unlocks the ability to manually record shots by pressing L1 during the replay. Q: What is easy mode, how do i unlock it, and can i unlock it anytime? A: Easy mode allows you to win and stay competitive with lower scores. It's unlocked after you lose a total of any combination of 7 tournaments or match play events. It can be unlocked at any time, just lose. Q: What's Q: I can't raise my HSG rank past king, what am i doing wrong? A: To raise your rank past king you need to improve your scores on each course. After you complete any stroke play round in regular stroke play or challenge mode you will see a chart showing your best scores for each course. There will be a column with anywhere from one to five (1-5) golf balls in it. The greater the number of golf balls the better. Make sure you have scores for 18 holes and not only 9 in and out, short and long tee. For example to hit the rank HSG Star you need to have 5 golf balls for every course. Q: Do you have a 100% save game you can post? A: Yes i do, but no i won't post it. Keep plugging, 90% of the game can be finished without being that great at the game quite frankly. This includes unlocking all the courses, items, and maxing out your stats. However, to obtain all the medals and the highest ranks does take what some skill and really should only be reserved for HSG Stars heh. Q: What do your stats look like, what's your score on (insert) course? A: As of June 6, 2005 this is what i'm looking like South Alps C.C. - 84 Rounds Short 18: -21 / OUT: -11 / IN: -11 Long 18: -21 / OUT: -11 / IN: -12 Autumn Pagoda C.C. - 59 Rounds Short 18: -18 / OUT: -10 / IN: -8 Long 18: -17 / OUT: -11 / IN: -9 Olive Coast C.C. - 65 Rounds Short 18: -18 / OUT: -9 / IN: -9 Long 18: -15 / OUT: -8 / IN: -9 Golden Desert G.C. - 37 Rounds Short 18: -14 / OUT: -8 / IN: -7 Long 18: -14 / OUT: -7 / IN: -7 Royal & Links C.C. - 47 Rounds Short 18: -12 / OUT: -7 / IN: -8 Long 18: -8 / OUT: -6 / IN: -4 Dino Park G.C. - 25 Rounds Short 18: -8 / OUT: -4 / IN: -4 Long 18: -8 / OUT: -5 / IN: -4 Best Score (18H) = -21 (S) Best Score (OUT) = -11 (S) Best Score (IN) = -12 (S) Best Putt = 81.2 ft (S) Best Chip-in = 274.2 y (S) Best Drive 389.1 y (S) Fairway Hits = 82.5% (B) Par Pace = 75.8% (B) Perfect Impact = 43.1% (B) Near Pin Average = 24.3 ft (B) Total (A) ============= 10.
