Introduction \=============================================================================/ Star Wars has long captured the hearts and minds of people around the world. The franchise has a long list of games that details the events of the movie but few managed to capture the Star Wars world and the epic battles that occurred in it. When the original Star Wars Battlefront was released in 2004, it received acclaim as being the first game to provide an immersive Star Wars experience. This year saw the release of the sequel, Star Wars Battlefront II, (BFII) promising more vehicles, heros and maps. PSP owners now have the opportunity to enjoy a portable version of the game faithful to the XBox/Playstation 2/PC versions with only several differences. /=============================================================================\ II. Game Modes \=============================================================================/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Galactic Conquest ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Galactic Conquest adds a strategic element to the standard BFII battles by providing a map with several planets and adding turn-based gameplay. The objective is to take over each planet by manouvering fleets around the map. Only once every map has been taken over will your team win. The only units controlled on the planet map are fleets. These are used to move to planets and to attack enemy fleets. Additional fleets may be purchased at friendly planets, once per turn. However, the more fleets under your control, the more expensive they become to produce. Prior to moving your units, you are able to purchase classes and cards for use in battle. Purchasing a class enables its use for both player and AI controlled units on the battlefield. Cards provide benefits to your team, from increasing the damage of blaster weapons to protecting control points with turret droids. They are extremely valuable and should be purchased at every opportunity. When a non-friendly planet is approached, a battle begins to take control. Upon winning, control is given to your side and you earn money from it. Once all planets have been captured, the campaign is complete. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Challenges ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Challenges are a form of mini-campaigns which require you to complete a task, such as kill 45 jawas in 10 minutes. Only 5 missions long, they are simple yet fun. Challenges are divided into Imperial Enforcer, Rogue Assassin and Rebel Raider. Each poeses a different style of task to complete. The Imperial Enforcer is required to hunt down natives of planets to prevent revolt against the empire. The Rogue Assassin must eliminate key targets and ,if required, their bodyguards to achieve their objectives. Finally, the Rebel Raider must collect contraband from around the map and return it to the base. Once all missions have been completed, the challenge campaign is finished. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instant Action ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is just the standard battle mode to create a playlist of maps to wage war in. Simply select your maps using the add button, select the game mode once a map has been selected and click launch to begin battle. /=============================================================================\ VII. FAQ \=============================================================================/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is the best control scheme to use in BFII? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's really a matter of personal preference. I have found that retro seems the most intuitive to me, as it is closer to FPS shooters on consoles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How big is the BFII Save file? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Technically, the game creates two save files: one for Galactic Conquest and another for the profile. Each of these use 64KB of space, thus giving a total save file size of 128KB. However, it is possible to have a save file of 64KB if you do not play Galactic Conquest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How do I heal my heros? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In all gameplay modes apart from assault, a hero's health (the lightsabre) can be refilled by earning points on the battlefield by earning kills, taking points or the like. However, in assault, a hero acts as a standard infantry unit and can be healed by picking up the blue packs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is the tow cable available on the Snow Speeder? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The tow cable for the snowspeeder is available only to the co-pilot. However, you can do it alone by positioning the tow cable launcher before taking off, flying towards and AT-AT, switch to co -pilot and fire it then switch back to pilot to begin circling the AT-AT. It can be difficult but with practice it is very useful. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How can I change my class during battle? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To change classes during battle, simply stand over a control point and press down. This will bring up the class selection screen. Pick your new class and you are ready to go. However, I have occasionally had difficulty getting the game to respond to this on some control points so you may have to try another one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why are some maps biased towards one side? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I guess it's just to recreate the feelings of the films. The maps that I am referring to are: Endor: Biased towards the rebels as the empire must contend with ewoks and traps. Losing an AT-ST to logs is frustrating. Kashyyyk: Biased towards the rebels as the empire must contend with wookies and heavy defences such as barriers and turrets. There are others, but I can't think of them at the moment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is the point of the marines in space battles? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is one of those things that was not really well thought out by the game designers, as infantry play no real role in space combat. The only possible use is to try to kill enemies in their hangar before they take off, but I think combat in space would be more effective. I think the marines were left in to duplicate the availability in the XBOX/PS2/PC versions. From what I have heard, their space battles include some of the large spacecraft's internals, enabling combat on foot. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How many bots (AI-Controlled Opponents) are available? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The maximum number of troops in a map at one time is 20. This means that there are up to 19 bots on any one map. That is, 9 plus the player on one team and 10 on the other. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does this game support multiplayer? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Battlefront II supports multiplayer games. However, this feature is only available using the Ad-Hoc features of the PSP to allow games with up to four human players. Infrastructure and game sharing is not supported by this title. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Should I buy this game? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It depends on the type of game you like. I think it is a fantastic game which is only let down buy some strange controls. But they can eventually be learned and this fault may be overlooked. /=============================================================================\ XIII.
