The Master System has had a monstrously popular following in Brazil, even many years after Sega stopped making Master System games. That is why a title such as this that was released exclusively in South America towards the end of the Genesis' life cycle was able to see the light of day. "20 em 1" is an extremely simple collection of 20 mini-games that came bundled with later editions of the Master System. These mini-games are so simple, in fact, that there is no real point or reward to playing any of the games longer than the 60 second time limit granted on each stage. Each game is also so basic that there's not much to say about each one. I will try to include as much information as I can, however. If I had to pick a demographic for this game, I'd like to say "nobody," but it's probably intended for kids maybe 5 years and younger who have never touched a game in their life. +=============================================================================+ & 2.0 FAQ & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ___________________________________________________________ Q: Can I play this game if I don't understand the language? A: Yes. There's very little dialogue in the game. Most of the game is fairly self-explanatory. If you're still confused, well maybe this FAQ will be good for something. _____________________________________________________ Q: Is there any reward or point to beating the games? A: Nope, no reward. The games are the reward in and of themselves. There's also no end to the number of rounds that each game will go on. They could go on forever potentially. ________________________________________________________________ Q: Is there anything I should know if I try to locate this game? A: First realize that this game does not come in what collectors call a "complete" form. That is, there's no copy of this game that you'll find boxed by itself. The game originally came with an edition of the Master System that was released in Brazil, so it has no packing of its own. Secondly, if you really want to track down a copy, don't bother going to the store unless you happen to live in Brazil. You might want to check eBay or with other online collectors. _________________________ Q: This guide is shallow. A: This game is shallow. Also, that's not a question. __________________________________________ Q: Where can I find the rom for this game? A: Don't ask me. I'll ignore emails like these. +=============================================================================+ & 3.0 The Main Menu & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Go to game select screen, select game. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Not used. Up/Down/Left/Right - Move the finger cursor over the game to be selected. When you first start up the game, you'll see the title screen that says "20 em 1." Press button one, and you'll bring up the game select screen. Here, you'll see twenty numbers. Each number represents a different mini-game. Highlight the number of the mini-game you desire to play with the finger cursor, and press button one to go to that game. Everytime you lose a game or quit using the Pause button, you'll be brought back to the title screen. +=============================================================================+ & 4.0 Game 01 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Not used. Left/Right - Move your character. In this game, you play a construction worker. The only thing you can do is run back and forth across the I-Beam. For 60 seconds, tools will rain from the sky. Your job is to catch those tools in your bucket by moving in the way of those tools. Don't worry about getting the bucket itself directly under the falling tools. You can run into the tools from the side or let them fall on your head. It only matters that you touch the tools. Catch most of them to earn a trophy. +=============================================================================+ & 5.0 Game 02 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down/Left/Right - Move the buggy. In this mini-game, you'll control a kind of moon buggy with a creepy smile on its face. The goal here isn't to race, so there's no need to speed that much. You can go either left or right, and things will randomly generate in your path. The yellow balls and little bombs are bad. Cake and burgers are good. If you collect lots of cake and burgers while avoiding a lot of obstacles, you'll get the trophy. Hit detection is attrocious, so expect to hit some obstacles at first. I find that I avoid more if I stick to the top of the screen. You can also turn around and go in the other direction to avoid an obstacle if you wish. +=============================================================================+ & 6.0 Game 03 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Steer skateboard. Right - Move forward. Left - Brake This mini-game is cheaply and unfairly difficult. Here, instead of getting points by picking up objects, you get points by going far. You will win the trophy if you avoid most obstacles. These obstacles include yellow cone-like things, yellow popiscle-shaped things, and manholes. You can brake if things approach too fast, but it's usually not fast enough. By the time an obstacle comes on screen, it's almost always too late to move out of the way. Just try to get lucky if you really want the trophy. +=============================================================================+ & 7.0 Game 04 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Jump Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down/Left - Not used. Right - Move forward. This game is supremely, incredibly easy. Your goal is simply to hop along the screen as it moves very slowly. Don't get caught on the left side of the screen, or you'll lose. If you press right, then jump, you'll jump up and to the right. If you press jump immediately after landing from a jump though, you'll only jump straight up. So if you're trying to clear a hurdle, make sure you remember to press forward before jumping, as obvious as that sounds. There are no holes in the ground, or obstacles. Absolutely nothing that makes this difficult in the slightest. +=============================================================================+ & 8.0 Game 05 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Jump. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Not used. Left/Right - Move left and right. In this game, you'll play a mouse. The goal is to grab as much of the flying cheese as possible. The cheese will come from the top right and top left of the screen, and it will either fall slowly or shoot across the screen quickly. Also make note that when you jump, you actually jump a little bit forward as well as up. To win, stand directly in the middle of the screen. When the cheese falls slowly, just walk towards it and let it fall on you, then move back to the middle. When it shoots quickly, jump for it from the middle of the screen. Then move back to the middle, and repeat until a minute is up. +=============================================================================+ & 9.0 Game 06 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Not used. Left/Right - Move left and right. This game is much like Game 1. You play a deep sea diver who's catching coins falling in the ocean instead of the tools from before. There are two differences in this game though. First, you move slower, but that's compensated by the fact that the coins drop slower than the tools did. The other difference is that sharks will pop out of the sides of the screen to try and hurt you. Like other obstacles, hitting them too much will cost you the trophy. Just try to stay in the middle when you can to stay away from the sharks and concentrate on the coins. +=============================================================================+ & 10.0 Game 07 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Down - Move forward. Left/Right - Steer. Another game that's too easy to possibly lose. Just steer the bike down the path between the tires. The only thing to avoid are these grey things. There are also blue blobs, but they don't hurt you. Survive for 60 seconds without hitting too many things, and you get the trophy. +=============================================================================+ & 11.0 Game 08 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down/Left/Right - Maneuver the car. From impossibly easy to impossibly hard. I cannot beat this game. I question whether it's even possible to beat. Cars will zig zag from the top of the screen, and they will try to lock onto you and hit you. They don't even really have to hit you. They just have to come kinda sorta close, and it counts as a hit. And once they're locked onto you, there's really no way of shaking them without getting hit. +=============================================================================+ & 12.0 Game 09 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Steer canoe. Left - Not used. Right - Go faster. This race and dodge game is much, much more fair than the evil skateboarding one in Game 2. Even if you idle the control, you will still move forward, but you can speed up temporarily if you hold down right. Even if you hold down forward though, you should still see most of the obstacles with enough time to steer out of the way, things like alligators and rocks. The only obstacle that really becomes a danger when moving faster are the arrows, so be careful of them. You don't have to hold down forward a ton to get the trophy, so speed in moderation. +=============================================================================+ & 13.0 Game 10 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - FIRE ZE MISSLES! Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down/Left/Right - Move the helicopter This game is almost fun. Almost, because it's still not actually fun, like all the other mini-games, but at least you get to have a dinky little shootout with a computer-controlled helicopter. You can move diagonally in addition to the four normal directions. Just shoot him before he shoots you. The computer will go somewhat easy on you, as about half the time after he gets shot, he'll stay still for a while so that you can shoot him again. Use those arcade skills to hit him more than he hits you. Not that tough. +=============================================================================+ & 14.0 Game 11 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Extend tongue. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Not used. Left/Right - Jump to lily pad to the left/right. In this game, you're a frog. Your goal is to eat lots of bugs. The catch is that you can't simply run into the bugs. In fact, that HURTS you. No, you have to eat the bugs by extending your tongue while in mid-air. You're not even allowed to extend your tongue when you're on the ground. No problem though. Just make sure you jump out of the way of all of the falling bugs. Then jump back towards them with tongue outstretched. Pretty simple once you get the hang of it. +=============================================================================+ & 15.0 Game 12 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Fire Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down/Left/Right - Maneuver spaceship. This level is basically the same as the car level, except it's disguised as a poor vertical shmup. You have a spaceship. Instead of cars zig-zagging at you, now it's enemy spaceships zig-zagging at you. The difference is that now you have a gun to kill them with. That makes it a whoooooole lot easier. So instead of trying to move out of the way, try to get in front of everyone. Then kill them. If you can't get in front of a few ships and they try to fly at you sideways, move up the screen, because they're incapable of moving backwards. Very easy trophy. +=============================================================================+ & 16.0 Game 13 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Fire Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Steer Left - Not used. Right - Go faster. Yet another completely impossible game. Physically impossible. You control a little biplane. Other planes will ram into you from the back. You have to shoot balloons in front of you. The problem is that the balloons float away before you can shoot them unless you go super fast the whole time, and even then, you probably won't hit them if you're trying to dodge a plane. However, if you're going super fast, you cannot avoid the planes behind you, period. They will hit you about 95% of the time, no matter how good your steering is. If you slow down, you can avoid maybe 50% of the planes if you're lucky, but like I said, then you won't be able to hit any balloons. Good luck earning this trophy. +=============================================================================+ & 17.0 Game 14 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Steer. Left - Brake. Right - Move forward. Pretty much exactly the same as the skateboarding game, except a little bit easier. Although it's not "easy." Just avoid everything you can like in the previous game. +=============================================================================+ & 18.0 Game 15 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Move up and down. Left/Right - Not used. Here, you're a pizza maker, and you have to bounce two three-inch wide pizzas into a Franklin stove, Pong-style. Just keep bouncing the little pizzas until they land in the oven. You need two in 60 seconds. Might take a couple tries, but it's pretty easy. More luck than skill. +=============================================================================+ & 19.0 Game 16 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Unleash spray. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Not used. Left/Right - Jump to the left and right. The mechanics work the exact same as Game 11 with the frog. You can only spray while jumping. The main difference here is that the flies you're trying to spray descend the screen at an angle and so are harder to avoid. I suggest standing off to the side so as to have a better chance to avoid the flies. Then just jump towards them when they're flying low and spray 'em. +=============================================================================+ & 20.0 Game 17 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Zap enemies. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up - Jump Down/Left - Not used. Right - Move right. This game works similarly to Game 4 where you jump across the level. Except the screen doesn't scroll, and you don't have to go anywhere. The goal here is simply to kill a lot of green guys without getting hit a lot. As soon as you kill one green guy, another immediately takes his place. Fortunately or unfortunately, this mini-game is broken and fairly impossible to lose. The green guys will immediately come on the screen and get caught on a bump in the road. You can stand right in front of where they get stuck, kill one, and another will come right to you. They'll never even touch you. Just keep zapping as many as you can before the time runs out. +=============================================================================+ & 21.0 Game 18 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up - Not used. Down/Left/Right - Slide downhill. This game is yet another altered clone of a previous game, this time Game 7, where you guided the dirt track car down the path. This time, you're a skier. Instead of trees, this time there are tires. To make this one harder, the controls aren't as tight, and you need to accumulate points by weaving through the flags. You don't have to get all of the flags, but get as many as you can. The controls are the only thing that make this one aggravating, but the trophy is still easy to get. +=============================================================================+ & 22.0 Game 19 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Not used. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down/Left/Right - Maneuver the car. This level appears to be exactly the same as Game 8, the car game. And when I say exactly the same, I mean only your car and the background seem to be different. Actually, I did somehow find this a bit easier than the other awful car level, but the enemy cars followed the same general zig-zag pattern. +=============================================================================+ & 23.0 Game 20 & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________ Controls Button 1 - Serve the ball. Button 2 - Not used. Pause - Go back to the title screen. Up/Down - Move up and down. Left/Right - Not used. Much like the pizza level, this is a pong-style level. Just serve the ball, and it will bounce until it hits the back wall and then will come back toward you. Obviously, you need to hit the ball back without missing, which is easy because the ball travels at 1 mile per hour. Hit the back wall five times to win. That easy. +=============================================================================+ & 24.0 Miscellany & +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ________________ 24.1 Legal Stuff This FAQ is Copyright 2005 by me.
