Press CTRL+F together, type the 5 character code next to the entry you are looking for, and press enter twice. You'll be at the appropriate section. Awesome. This method works in many programs I have tested it in, such as Notepad and Microsoft Word. I'm sure it's similar in most programs though. 1. What's New in this Version?.............. WGWNV 2. What's New in this Version? __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGWNV) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= This is the initial release, so everything is new. Obviously, this section will be more relevant if I have an actual update. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 2. Legal Info/ Contact details etc. __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGLCE) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= This FAQ is Copyright of Matthew Stephenson (Ringworm), 2005. It can be found on the following websites ONLY: www.gamefaqs.com Want to host this FAQ? Found it on another site not listed above? Let me know: ringwormrulez[at]gmail[dot]com I may let you host it. Ask. The only requirement is you post the ENTIRE FAQ, UNEDITED. No changing any of it, and it has to be all there. Try to keep it updated as well; the most recent version will always be found at GameFAQs. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION BEFORE HOSTING THIS! If not, you are in breach of the law. Obviously, you can not make profit from this guide by selling it or anything similar. Once again this is illegal. You can make a copy for personal usage though if you're that way inclined. I got no problems with that. It's your printer ink and paper you are wasting. Got a question or got some info you feel should be included? Again the best way to contact me is by emailing: ringwormrulez[at]gmail[dot]com I may take a while to respond, just letting you know. Also, make sure what you want to ask is not covered already. Generally, I respond to anybody that needs help. If I feel the FAQ makes it perfectly clear, and you just haven't read it properly though, I may not. IF YOU DO EMAIL ME: Include the game name, or something which makes it obvious what it's about. I will NOT read ANY emails with attachments, or ones with no subject line. I'd like to take some time to thank the people that have helped with this guide. Firstly, I'd like to thank Sega for making the game, which brings back fond childhood memories as I replay the game. The webmasters that host this FAQ should get a bit of credit too I guess, as you wouldn't be reading this otherwise. I'd also like to thank you, the reader, for choosing this guide, and I hope I helped in some way. Like most of my FAQs, this one is read by roughly two people per week. You can count yourself among the lucky few that have stumbled across a true masterpiece! =D All names, track layouts, and related material are Copyright of Sega, 1986. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 3. Introduction __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGINT) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= The Sega Master System had very few racing games, and this was one of them. Even from a quick play through of the game, you will be able to tell quite quickly why the game was a bargain price game, as there is not a lot to it, and it is quite poor quality, even for its time. I'm sure you'd be able to have a few hours fun with the game, even if it's making completely silly tracks in the edit mode. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 4. Controls __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGCON) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= The game is a one player game only (unfortunately). Left/right - steers the car in this direction. Down - change gears from Low to High. Up - change gears from High to Low. Button 1 - Brake. Button 2 - Accelerate. When editing a track in edit mode, button 1 will place the currently selected piece, button 2 will remove the last placed piece. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 5. Game Screen __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGSCR) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= Although it is quite obvious, the following is a quick description of the components of the game screen whilst driving. In the top left you'll see a bar which is made up of numerous small blocks. This is your rev meter. When in low gear, I recommend changing gears to high if this meter has any red blocks showing. I also recommend changing from high gear to low if the car is accelerating slowly - generally when the blue bars are around half way up the angled part. Below the rev meter is your current speed. This is fairly pointless, but if you know the best speed to travel at to get around a corner, you may use this a bit. I generally ignore it, but could probably get lap times a few seconds quicker if I used it effectively. To the right of the speedometer is the time taken. You must keep the time below, or equal to the time limit for each track to continue in the game. Just to the right of the time, you will see "Parts". For more information on this, see section 7.2. To the right of the parts you will see two indicators: one marked with an "L" above one marked with an "H". It doesn't take a genius to figure this out; these show if you are in Low (L) or High (H) gear. To the far right is a map of the track. This is probably the feature you'll use the most of the objects on screen, it lets you know in advance what direction the next bend will be, and where you are exactly on the track. Remember: All tracks are CLOCKWISE. Before starting each race, you will also see three lights. These have a sequence of red, red, light blue. Once the light blue light fades, the time begins. Obviously, hold down the accelerator when this happens. There's not really much else to add. You are the RED car, guess I should mention that. Although there seems to only be three other computer controlled cars ahead of you (blue), there are a lot more than that. Not sure where they all come from to be honest, I guess they cheat and start before you show up. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 6. General Hints and Strategies __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGGHS) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= There's not really a lot to help you with, but I'll try to find a few things. I've never used the brake in this game; I find it is quite useless. To slow down, simply release the accelerator, which you will end up doing for most corners. Opposition cars will either be on the left hand side of the track, or the right. They can also switch sides, and if they do, will only switch once. If you are not going at full speed, you will have time to change sides if a car suddenly switches sides in front of you. It's better to take an extra second or two by going slightly below full speed, than to waste around ten seconds by crashing. This sounds silly, but try to stay on the track. The edge of the track (ripple strip) will slow you down a LOT, and there are also advertising signs at the side of the track, which you should obviously avoid. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 7. Start Mode __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGSTM) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= On the main menu, you will see two options: "Start" and "Edit". This section covers the main section of the game - Start. You will be able to race on any of twelve tracks in various locations around the world, and must beat a set time for one lap of your chosen track. Fail to do so, and you will lose any accumulated points. Your best lap times will stay until you turn of the console however. _________________________________________________ 7.1. Tracks (WGTRK) _________________________________________________ To choose a track, press up and down to cycle through them. I have included here a map of each track, so you can memorise them easier, as well as times needed to get various points. I have also made a guess as to where in the world each track is. As it is not mentioned in either the game or the manual, these guesses may be very wrong, and you may think something completely different. As a quick reminder, remember that all tracks are raced in a clockwise direction. The start/finish line on the tracks is shown by OOOO symbols on the following maps. *************************************** 7.1.01. Spending Points (WGSPP) _________________________________________________ Once you have accumulated at least 100 points by beating the time limits on various tracks, you may spend these on upgrades to power up your car. Each part you buy will last for one race only. You may buy and use multiple parts for any race, if you have enough points. Available parts, and the points they cost to buy are as follows: "ACCELERATOR": 100 Points. "HANDLING": 150 Points. "ENGIN": 200 Points. If you have these parts equipped, the following will appear under the word "PARTS" on the game screen: With the "ACCELERATOR" equipped, you will see "ACCELE". With the "HANDLING" equipped, you will see "HANDLE". With the "ENGIN" equipped, you will see "SPEED". Getting enough points to purchase these parts is probably the hardest part. Find a track where you can beat the time limit easily (many people use track 1), then race it repeatedly. Once you have enough points for the desired part/s, you may go ahead and buy them. From experience, I have found that the accelerator part is by far the best value. This makes accelerating (and decelerating) much faster, and will get you to top speed around three times as fast as normal. Handling is pretty much useless, and there is no way it is worth spending 150 points on. It makes the car slide less in corners, and may save you around one second per lap. Engin (it should have a second E - learn to spell, people at Sega!), increases your top speed by a significant amount. Whether it is worth 200 points is up to you, I don't buy it very often. I recommend purchasing this along with the accelerator package to get better value. How you spend points is up to you. As the maximum amount of points you can get from any race is 200, if you buy more than one part at once, you WILL lose points overall. If you are going for the best possible time though, buying multiple parts is worth it. Be warned though that getting the points back again may take quite a few races. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 8. Edit Mode __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGEDM) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= Edit mode enables you to create your own tracks! You must include the straight that is already given to you on screen, and apart from that, you may use up to 127 parts to complete the track. The track must start at the right hand end of the straight, and end at the left hand end. You will not be able to race on the track until you meet these criteria. Why only 127 pieces? Seems like a weird number doesn't it? Well it's all because... (CUT! I could ramble on and on for pages here about some mythical reason why they chose 127 as the limit, which would be complete lies. I won't bore you, but the real reason is to do with memory restrictions.) Once you have made a complete track, you will be given an option to race on it. Press button 1 to race, or button 2 to change your track. After completing a lap of your track, press button 1 to race on it again (good for challenging a friend or two), or button 2 to quit. There is no way to save your track, unless you are using an emulator. I'll let you explore how to use this feature completely. It's very simple to use, and can be quite fun seeing some of your weird ideas for a track come to life. You can add as many loops as you want, even crossing other parts of the track (although it won't cross when you are racing, it just looks like it on the map). As long as the two ends join, and you use 127 or less pieces, anything goes. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 9. Frequently Asked Questions __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGFAQ) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= As this is the initial release, obviously, I haven't been asked any questions yet. If you need more help, send me an email, and I'll happily respond! Q: What is your favourite track? A: Of the main twelve, probably track 5. Not sure why though. Of self made tracks, I like any with long straight sections, rather than windy tracks. Q: Can't you just get 450 points, then make a save state, allowing you to buy all three upgrades whenever you want if using an emulator? A: Yes. I do this to try to beat my best times for various tracks. I didn't include it in the main part of the FAQ as a lot of people using the guide may still be playing the original game on the original system. It's a good idea if you are playing on a ROM though. Q: Where did you get your copy of the ROM? Can you send me a copy? A: Don't remember, and no. Using a ROM is illegal without purchasing the game, and I have no proof you have the original game. I do have it as well =D Q: Any way to drive a different coloured car? A: Not that I know of. Maybe you can do it with a game genie or similar device (not sure if they even made these for the SMS). Anyway, red cars go the fastest! Q: Is it possible to do more than one lap of a track, to race counter clockwise or to go in reverse? A: No to all three. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 10. Concluding Remarks __O_/ | | o--o\ (WGCRM) /o--o | | | ======================================================================= If I were you, I'd avoid this game, especially if you are considering paying money for it. It's not worth it. If the game had any form of competitive multiplayer, it'd be MUCH better. As far as I know, this is one of the earliest games with a track editor though, so you may like to consider trying it just for that feature. You can still get a few hours game play out of the game, but overall, I'd get any of the other racing games for the system ahead of this one. ======================================================================= | | | \_O__ 11.
