While a lot of Championship Wrestler's appeal was stripped away in the home console port, it still contained a simplistic Wrestling engine, hidden moves and in true Japanese Puroresu traditional, a memorable cast of Wrestlers all disguised under fake aliases. All in all, Champion Wrestler on the TurboGrafx16 was the closest any gamer would get to playing the Arcade port in their homes. Now, on with the FAQ! ======================================================== ******THE CONTROLS****** ======================================================== -While standing: Approach enemy: Lockup Forward + Forward: Run Button I: Punch Button II: Kick While grappling: Button I + Forward/Back/Up or Down: Irish Whip Button 2 + Forward/Back/Up or Down: Strong Grapples While near a turnbuckle: Up + Back/ Up + Forward: Climb the upper left or right turnbuckles Down + Back/ Down + Forward: Climb the lower left or right turnbuckles While on the turnbuckle: Down/Up: Climb down from the turnbuckle Button I: Light Turnbuckle Strike Button II: Medium Turnbuckle Strike -while opponent is laying on the ground: Button I: Stomp Button II: Submission Hold (at opponent's feet) Button II: Stomp (at opponent's upper torso)/ Pick up opponent Button 1 + Button II: Pin {Note: in order to perform a successful pin, you must mash buttons while you are attempting to pin your opponent who has little to no health remaining in their life bar. The darker the colour of the LIFE Bar, the easier it is to perform stronger grapples, apply submission holds and pin the Wrestler. Over time, the LIFE Bar does rejuvenate health by refraining from attacking or grappling. -POWER Bar: An energy meter used to determine a Wrestler's energy for grapple attempts , escaping submission holds or by pinning/kicking out of a pinfall. The POWER Bar increases and decreases with how well you mash buttons during these specific situations. -Grapple system: The use of throws or grapples in Championship Wrestler. Grapples are performed by simply walking up to an opponent which then instantly initiates a lock up animation. Once both Wrestlers have locked up, a button mash sequence begins. Both Wrestlers can monitor how well they are button mashing by keeping a close eye on their POWER Bars located directly below their LIFE Bars. Stronger grapples and finishing moves (also referred to as "Favorite Techniques") can only be activated when either Wrestler receives a considerable amount of damage, otherwise the stronger grapple or finisher will be reversed. -Submission Holds: Grapple techniques that requires button mashing to escape. The amount of damage inflicted in a Submission hold depends on how quickly either Wrestler escapes from the submission. -Turnbuckle Attacks: Strike attacks initiated after climbing either the top left or top right turnbuckles also known as "Top Rope Maneuvers". -Strike Attacks: Punches, kicks and dropkicks available to each Wrestler. -Stomp Attacks: Strike attacks performed on a grounded opponent. Strike attacks cannot be reversed or blocked as long as either Wrestler is laying on the ground. -Reversals: When either Wrestler attempts to perform a Strong Grapple on a Wrestler with favorable health remaining, the Strong Grapple will be countered into a Reversal or move cancellation. -Special Moves/Finishing Moves: A Wrestler's special finishing manuever that can be executed in a match under certain conditions or requirements. For more info on a specific Wrestler's Special/Finishing moves, check out "THE WRESTLERS" section of this FAQ. ========================================================= ******THE RULES****** ========================================================== -Pinfalls: When either Wrestler attempts to perform a pin on a downed opponent. A Wrestler can attempt to escape a pinfall if: they have enough health remaining, are pinned near the ropes/turbuckles (which results in a rope break) or a team member breaks up the pinfall. -GIVE UP: When a submission hold is applied to either Wrestler containing little to no health remaining in their lifebar. If the submission hold is applied while either Wrestler is touching the Ropes or turnbuckles ,the submission will be broken up with a rope break. -Rope Break: When either Wrestler is pinned or put into a submission hold near the ring's ropes or turnbuckle, the submission or pin will be broken up up resulting in a rope break. -TIME UP: During a match, if the time limit is reached, the match will result in a "Count out" or draw game where the Wrestler with the more health remaining wins the match. -Draw: Where both Wrestlers lose the match after being counted out outside of the ring or by having the same amount of health after a TIME UP occurs. -Count out: When either Wrestler remains outside the ring for a 20 count, the match the match will end with a "Ring out" resulting in an automatic loss for the Wrestler remaining outside the ring. If both Wrestlers remain outside the ring for a 10 count, the match will end as a "DRAW" where neither Wrestler wins the match under the condition of a "Double Ring out". ========================================================= ******MODE SELECT****** ========================================================== -1P VS COM: The 1st player faces off against the entire roster of computer controlled opponents to become World Champion. -1P VS 2P: The 1st player versus the 2nd player in a 1 on 1, single verus match. -1P.2P VS COMS: The 1st and 2nd player controls a tag team against a series of tag teams controlled by the computer to become Tag Team Champions. -1P.2P VS 3P.4P: The first and 2nd player controls a tag team against a tag team controlled by the 3rd and 4th player in a 2 on 2 tag team match. ======================================================== ******THE WRESTLERS****** ======================================================== In order of appearance on the character selection screen. ------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Once all the playable Wrestlers have been defeated, a special "Dream Match" will start with King The Brute as your final opponent. -Weapon: While facing off against Cobra, you'll notice Cobra's Manager walking back and forth outside the ring. Exit the ring where Cobra's Manager Was walking and you'll find a weapon you can use in the match! -The Fire Breather: Cobra Joe's special move "Fire Breath" is an excellent way to inflict serious damage on your opponents while removing the need to grapple. Cobra's Fire Breath is also the only projectile move in the game and it packs a wallop of a punch, too! Just keep your distance, use Cobra's Fire Breath and if your opponents starts running to avoid the flames, chase them down with a running kick to put an end to their agility mid stride. ======================================================== ******FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS****** ======================================================== Q: Why does every Wrestler a weird name in this game? A: This is a common practice in Japanese Wrestling games. These weird names and altered looks are aliases put into place so the developers of Champion Wrestler would avoid paying royalties to the actual real life Wrestlers or avoid being sued in the process. Q: Are there any secret characters to unlock? A: No. Though, I would love to play as the hidden boss 'King The Brute'. Q: Why can't I pin my opponent? I try pinning them but they keep kicking out! A: You have to mash buttons as quickly as possible (Button I, Button II + the directional buttons) after pinning your opponent with little to no health remaining in their LIFE Bar. You can monitor how well you are button mashing by keeping a close eye on your POWER Bar located directly below your LIFE Bar. Q: What's up with the funky names of some of the moves? Boston Club? Neck Hunnging Tree? Head Bat??!! Moon Sault???!!!!! A: Just a series of overlooked translation errors on TAITO's part. I find these errors add to the game's cheesy appeal. Q: What's a "TITLE MATCH"? A: A Title match is where your Wrestler(s) fight against the holder(s) of a title in either the singles or tag team divisions on the 7th round of 1P VS COM or 1P.2P. VS COMS. If you win the TITLE MATCH, you or your team become the Champion/ Champions. Q: What's a "DEFENSE MATCH" A: A Defense match occurs immediately after you have defeated the former holder(s) of a championship in either the singles or tag team division on the 8th round of 1P VS COM or 1P.2P VS COMS modes. The former champion(s) want their title(s) back and will request a rematch where you must defend your title(s).This time however, your opponent(s) will be much more difficult to defeat. Q: What's a "DREAM MATCH"? A: The final match of 1P VS COM mode where you fight in a fantasy dream match against the deceased Bruiser Brody (KING THE BRUTE). Defeat King and you'll be the true World Heavyweight Champion of the World and see the game's ending in the process. Q: My opponent won't stop running away. What do I do? A: Use a running kick to home in on them and take them down mid stride! Q: I was paying close attention to the intro and noticed a few moves listed for some Wrestlers that I can't find in the game. What happened? A: This was most likely another overlooked error as Championship Wrestler was ported from the Arcades to the Turbo Grafx. Q: Why did you write a FAQ for this game? A: There was no FAQ for this game, so, I wrote one hoping to clear up any confusion and provide enough information, tips and tricks for players to get the most out of Champion Wrestler. ======================================================== ******SPECIAL THANKS****** ======================================================== I would personally like to thank: {TAITO} for releasing Champion Wrestler on both the TurboGrafx-16 and in the Arcades. {HUMAN Entertainment} for introducing me to the exciting world of Puroresu video games and creating the finest wrestling game series possible ...the Fire Pro Wrestling series. {GameFAQs} for creating and continuing to host the greatest FAQ website of all time. {TheSuicidalDragon} for their informative "Top 10" video series on Youtube. {PuroGeek} for inspiring me to write and contribute my own FAQ.
