When you are playing the game, you may notice that some players have icons next to their names. Each icon indicates a specialty that the current player has. Here are descriptions of each. Star- The player's overall rating is very high. This would be your clutch shooter. Three- This player can shoot the 3-pointer extremely well. Shoe- This player is a fast runner. Crosshairs- This player has a terrific jumpshot. Hand- This player is a strong defensive player. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Offensive Strategies [OFFST] ............................ ___________ / Dribbling \__________________________________________________________________ Ah dribbling, the basic offensive move in basketball. Dribbling consists of bouncing the ball on the court to maintain possession. Not dribbling causes in a traveling call, which gives the ball to the other team. Now, let's learn some dribbling techniques. Pressing O will cause your player to dribble the ball in between his legs. This is called a "hesitation dribble". This dribble will set up your future move. The hesitation dribble will sometimes catch the other team off guard, leaving you with an open shot. Crossovers are also an important part in basketball. A crossover is where you you use a move to try to get past the defender. This move can be a spin or another technique. Watch out though, because if the defender finds out early, he'll try to draw the charging foul on you. __________________ / Passing the ball \___________________________________________________________ Another basic offensive move in basketball. To pass the ball, you just need to press the X button. To pass to a certain person, press R2 to bring up the player icons. Then, press the corresponding button to pass to that player. During the game, you'll need to maintain good passing skills to lower turnovers and to find the open person. __________ / Shooting \___________________________________________________________________ Of course, shooting the ball and making it in the hoop scores your team points. Depending on where you shoot it determines the amount of points your team receives. I will now describe the different types of shots you can do in the game. The jump shot is the most basic shot in basketball. During a jump shot, your player will jump straight up in the air and shoot. Also, try to get an open shot to improve the accuracy of your shot. If you're well guarded, the shot might be blocked or off target. A "fade away" is when your player shoots the ball while falling backwards, hence "fading away" from the basket. This is good when you are closely guarded to provide separation between you and the defender. The layup is the most effective shot in the game. Once you can find a hole in the defense, layups will be your best friend. Since you hardley ever miss a layup, this will probably be your best bet during tight situations. The slam dunk is definitely a favorite in this game. Dunking consists of your player slamming the ball down in the hoop. This shot gives you a big momentum booster during the game. The final shot is the foul shot. Down the stretch, your team needs to be flawless from the stripe to come out on top. When shooting foul shots, try to release the ball at the top of your routine. This gives you the best opportunity to drain the shot. ____________ / Posting Up \_________________________________________________________________ Some of you may or may not know what posting up is. Posting up is when a player moves next to a defender in the paint. Once that is accomplished, you can back the defender down to move closer to the basket. Once you are comfortable with your position, you can shoot around the defender for some easy points. The drop step is also an effective move in post play. To perform this, post up to your defender by holding L2. With L2 held, press L1 and O to spin in the direction that you desire and toward the hoop for a layup or dunk. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Defensive Strategies [DEFST] ............................ ____________ / Rebounding \_________________________________________________________________ Great rebounding is the key to a great defensive team. Grabbing rebounds gives your team more possessions to score. Your best rebounder is usually your center and sometimes your power forward. Try to get the height advantage to make rebounding a lot easier. "Boxing out" is the most effective tactic to gain rebounds. To box out, you just need to position yourself in between the basket and your opponent, forcing your opponent to jump over you to gain the rebound. Try to box your opponent out if you want the advantage. __________ / Stealing \___________________________________________________________________ Attempting to steal the ball in this game is very rewarding if you succeed, and terrible if you don't. If you succeed in stealing the ball, you're left with a fast break opportunity, usually 2 on 1. However, if you fail, you'll have a reaching in foul slapped on you. Stealing is not just taking the ball from their hands, it can be intercepting a pass also. If you happen to be in between the player making the pass and the player receiving it, you can hit O to try and deflect it to turn the ball over. __________ / Blocking \___________________________________________________________________ Blocking an opponent's shot can get you a possession and a big momentum booster. To attempt a block, press the square button as soon as the opponent attempts his shot. If you time it just right, your defender will block the shot and hopefully gain possession. What's remarkable about the down-to-the-wire win was the Orangemen's starting lineup - 1 senior, 2 sophomores, and 2 freshmen. Syracuse's freshmen led the potent offense with their stud small forward leading the team in scoring and rebounding, and their play-making point guard leading in assists. 2002 Oklahoma Team With thier stellar guard running the show and their tough forward, who was selected to the All-NCAA Tournament team, the Oklahoma Sooners won the Big 12 Tournament and earned a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. After a tough run through the brackets, the Sooners advanced to the Final Four where Indiana defeated them 64-73, ending their season with a 31-5 record. 2002 Maryland Team Lead by thier amazing guard, who was named ACC player of the year, the Maryland Terrapins won their first ACC regular season title in 20 years. Despite losing in the ACC tournament semi final game, the Terps earned a #1 seeding in their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament. The ninth time was the charm for Maryland as they advanced and won the National Title game, defeating the Indiana Hoosiers, 73-64. 2002 Kansas Team Leading the nation in team offense with 90.9 points per game, the Kansas Jayhawks went 33-4 and were undefeated in conference play. Their junior led team, with creative play, great shooting from both guard positions and solid play up front earned the Jayhawks a Big 12 regular season title and and a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. With their #1 seed, Kansas advanced to the Final Four behind their All-American center eventually losing to that year's National Champion, Maryland 88-97. 2001 Duke Team The year that brought the turn of the century saw the Duke Blue Devils (35-4) win the NCAA title against the Arizona Wildcats. It was a thrilling game that featured 10 starting players who each averaged over 10 points a game. But when the clock showed 0.0, the Blue Devils stood victorious by 10 points. Their coach would later be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. 2001 Arizona Team Ranked #1 in teh preseason polls, National Championship expectations put plenty of pressure on the 2001 Wildcats. The death of the coach's wife left the team without their head coach for a three-week span. Upon his return, Arizona became the hottest team in the nation reeling off 18 victories on the last 21 games propelling them to their second national championship game in five years. Despite a monster game from their senior center, scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, the Wildcats were defeated by Duke, 82-72. 2000 Michigan State Team Strong leadership and tough play from the forward position, a saavy point guard and an excellent recruiting class, led the 2000 Michigan State Spartans to obtain a Big Ten Championship, four All-NCAA Tournament Team selections and a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. With this strong team the Spartans went on to win the NCAA National Championship, defeating Florida 89-76. 2000 Iowa State Team Led by their star big man, who became Iowa State's first ever First Team All-American and the Big 12 Conference Player of the year, the Cyclones garnered a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. With their highest basketball seeding in school history, Iowa State advanced to the Elite Eight where they lost to eventual Champion Michigan State, 64-75. Their amazing year finished with a 32-5 record with their coach winning Iowa State's first ever National Coach of the Year honors. 2000 Florida Team The 2000 Florida Gators gave their fans the greatest season in Gator hoops history as runner up of the National Title. With eight underclassmen on a 13-man roster, Florida went 12-4 earning a share of the SEC Regular season title. As a #5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Florida continued to dazzle fans in the first round when a buzzer beater fell in for the win. Three wins later the Gators competed in the National Title game for the first time in school history, losing to Michigan State, 76-89. 1999 Duke Team With a mean center and an outstanding shooting guard, Duke led the nation in offense with 93.2 points per game. Their center earned All-American team honors and both were selected for the all NCAA Tournament Team. Entering the Tournament with only one loss, Duke was heavily favored to take the National Title. Facing fellow #1 seed Connecticut, Duke was defeated 74-77 in the National Title game. Finishing 37-2, the 1999 Duke team became the first-ever school to have four players chosen in the first round of the draft. 1999 Connecticut Team The 1999 NCAA championship was won by Connecticut, who went 34-2 that season. Although they had an excellent regular season, the Huskies were underdogs against the Duke Blue Devils in the final game. Connecticut received a big contribution from their star forward, and squeezed out a narrow victory. 1998 Stanford Team Led by an All-American guard and a legendary coach, the 1998 Stanford Cardinal finished 2nd in Pac-10 with a 15-5 conference record and 30-5 overall record. The Cardinal entered the NCAA Tournament as a #3 seed and continued on to the Final Four. Stanford, however, would have their season ended in the semi-final by the 1998 National Champion, Kentucky Wildcats. 1998 North Carolina Team In 1998, North Carolina went 34-4, but lost in the national semifinals to an upstart Utah team. Their power forward recorded nearly twice as many rebounds as any one of his teammates, and led his team with an average of 22.2 points per game. He and the team's other star forward played with a lot of flash, running and dunking their way to the Final Four. 1998 Kentucky Team The 1998 Kentucky Wildcats played the season that everyone dreams about. Led by their senior guard, they finished the season 35-4, winning the regular season title in the powerhouse South Eastern Conference with a 17-2 record, never losing a conference road game. As a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky continued to storm their way into the Final Four and then into the championship game, facing the #3 seeded Utah Utes. Kentucky became 1998 NCAA National Champions, defeating Utah 78-69. 1998 Kansas Team The 1998 Kansas Jayhawks had a record of 35-4 and went into the NCAA Tournament as a #1 seed and very high expectations. With quality players at every position, Kansas was expected to win it all...it was not to be. Despite a #1 seeding, Kansas was upset by #8 seeded Rhode Island, losing by five points in the second round. 1997 Wake Forest Team The 1997 Demon Deacons went 24-7 behind a 7-foot, two-time All-American center. The dominating post play, of what would be a number one overall pick, led Wake Forest into the NCAA Tournament as a #3 seed. Despite having one of the greatest centers in college basketball, Wake Forest was upset by a legendary coach and a Stanford team with a #6 seed. 1997 Minnesota Team 1997 was the year of the "Golden Season" for the Golden Gophers of Minnesota; going 27-3 at the end of the regular season and becoming the overall Big Ten Champions for the 9th time and the first time since 1982. With this outstanding regular season Minnesota, led by an outstanding senior backcourt, entered the NCAA Tournament as a #1 seed reaching the Final Four. Despite having an All-NCAA Tournament Team guard, the Gopher's in the end lost their semi-final game to Kentucky 78-69, finishing their season with 31 wins and four losses. 1997 Arizona Team Since the first NCAA tounament in 1939, six finals have been decided in overtime, and in 1997 the speedy guards of the Arizona Wildcats beat the defending Kentucky champs in OT. Their 25-9 season partially reflected the rough ride Arizona took in the tournament, with the Wildcats nearly losing to South Alabama and Charleston in the early rounds. The final game was no easier, with neither team ever leading by more than nine points and a game that was tied 18 times. 1996 Kentucky Team The 1996 Kentucky Wildcats (34-2) possessed so much firepower they defeated their tounament opponents by an average margin of 20 points. Their deep bench set them apart from all the other teams that fell by the wayside. With a roster loaded with six future NBA players, the 1996 Wildcats were one of the most talented teams in NCAA history. 1996 Georgetown Team Led by their dominant center and All-World freshman point guard who averaged 23 points per game, was the Big East's Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, the Hoyas won their 6th conference title. After earning a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Georgetown fell one game short of the Final Four, losing in the quarterfinals to Massachusetts and finishing with a 29-8 record. 1996 Connecticut Team This Huskies team earned a 32-2 record with their All-American small forward propelling them to their third straight Big East conference title. Starting the NCAA Tournament with the coveted #1 seed, Connecticut made their way to the Elite Eight and was upset by #5 Mississippi State, 60-55. 1995 UCLA Team Exactly two decades after winning their last championship, UCLA (31-2) took a trip down memory lane and won the NCAA title. Finishing #1 in the final regualr season poll, the Bruins miraculously escaped a second round tournament defeat on a length of the court drive and shot by their senior point guard. However, he would only play three minutes in the final before leaving with a sprained right wrist. Coming off the bench to play all 37 remaining minutes, their backup point guard led the team in assists and played like a million dollars. 1995 North Carolina Team This team powered through to an ACC regular season title and an ACC Tournament title to earn themselves a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by a powerful center and forward, the Tar Heels blasted through the bracket with double-digit victories and coasted into the Final Four. In the semi final game, the Tar Heels' season was ended by the Arkansas Razorbacks, giving them a season record of 21-11. 1994 Arkansas Team The SEC division ended their championship dry spell in 1994 when Arkansas came out of nowhere with a 31-3 record and a NCAA championship title. With the national championship on the line with 40 seconds left to play, their star guard swished a high arching three pointer that gave them the momentum they needed to complete the win. In that game, Arkansas simply out-gunned Duke with 11 more missed field goal attempts but one more successful shot to win 76-72. 1993 Michigan Team The "Fab Five" of the 1993 Michigan Wolverines took college basketball by storm, and made it to the NCAA Tournament final in both their freshman and sophomore years. However, they would come up short both times. Led by their star big men and point guard, the Wolverines captured the nation's fancy with their extra long shorts and in-your-face style. 1992 Duke Team The 1992 Duke Blue Devils were the first team to win back-to-back NCAA titles since UCLA almost twenty years earlier. Duke went 34-2 overall, but lost those two contests on the road by a total of six points. Their three All-Tournament Team starters combined for 53 of the 71 points they scored in the final game against Michigan. Their regional final win against Kentucky on a buzzer-beating shot from their star forward in considered by many to be the greatest college basketball game of all time. 1991 Georgetown Team This team, led by a legendary coach and two dominant defensive players, each holding a school record, blocks in a game and blocks in a season, used superb defense and consistent play in the paint to propel them into a #8 seeding in the NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas had their season ended in the second round by the defending National Champions and #1 seed, the Runnin' Rebels on UNLV. 1990 UNLV Team Rebels' they were called, and rebels the 1990 champions from UNLV were with a 35-5 season and an NCAA title. Their 103-73 rout of Duke was the largest margin of victory ever for a championship game, and was the only time a team scored more than 100 points in the final. Even if they had missed every single free throw they attempted, they still would have scored enough points to win the game. 1990 LSU Team This Tiger team could be considered one of the best LSU teams to ever set foot on hardwood. Led by their All-American point guard who was the 1990 National Player of the Year and their dominant 17-year-old center, who would become the 1991 National Player of the Year, the Tigers went 19-10 and entered the NCAA Tournament as a confident #5 seed. However, the Tigers made an early exit in the second round in a heartbreaking three point loss to #4 seed Georgia Tech that left them one win shy of the Sweet Sixteen. 1990 Arkansas Team Arkansas, who went 30-5, came up three places shy in 1990, taking only 4th place after losing to Texas 88-85 and to Duke 97-83 in the Semi-Finals. It was a bitter end for their star sophomore guard, who led his team in scoring and stealing with a tournament average of 19.5 and 2.3, respectively. Unfortunately, by touching the ball so much he also led the team in turnovers, and his 19.5 PPG tournament average was about nine points less than his overall average. 1989 Michigan Team The 1989 Wolverines, who went 30-7 overall, kept their fans on the edge of their seats by winning their two Final Four contests by a total of three points. Immense pressure with three seconds left in overtime in a clutch one-and-one situation didn't phase the star Michigan point guard who grew up on the streets of Detroit. Nailing both free throws to go 9-10 from the line for the game, he was later quoted as saying that more than luck was on his side. 1989 Illinois Team This may have been the most talented basketball team the Fighting Illini has ever produced. The season began with 16 straight victories followed by a No. 1 ranking midway through the season. Unfortunately, their star guard was injured and they lost three of their next four games and their No. 1 ranking, eventually finishing 2nd in the Big 10. With their star guard back in the lineup they were awarded a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Final Four where they fell to that year's National Champions, the Michigan Wolverines. 1988 Oklahoma Team Like most runner-ups to the title, the 1988 Oklahoma Sooners shot poorly in the final game despite gunning down season and tournament opponents for an overall record of 35-4. Their sub-50% shooting doomed the team, as their title game opponent, Kansas, made five more baskets while taking 15 less shots. Despite having NBA bound players in both their point guard and center, the Sooners fell to the Jayhawks in a classic title game upset. 1988 Kansas Team The senior forward (and Naismith Award winner) from the 1988 Kansas title team carried his 27-11 team to an NCAA championship with 31 points and 18 rebounds in the final game. In the previous game, he broke the steals record for a Final Four game with six in a victory over Duke. This is the last NCAA title won by the Jayhawks, although they have perennially been one of the favorites to win the title. 1988 Arizona Team Led by superior play at the guard and forward positions, this was truly one of the greatest Arizona Wildcats teams. Not only was this beginning of a four year reign as Pac 10 champions, this team gave their coach his 300th victory on March 27, 1988 defeating North Carolina 70-52 in the NCAA West Regional Final. That victory also gained Arizona their first-ever Final Four appearance. Although they lost the semi-final game, Arizona had a stellar season, finishing with a 35-3 overall record. 1987 Syracuse Team By the thinnest of margins' best describes the loss Syracuse suffered to Indiana in the 1987 title game. The 31-7 Orangemen were in the game until the very end, but were ultimately felled by a last second shot. It was anyone's game but in this title matchup it would be Syracuse who would have to watch another team cut down the nets. 1986 Louisville Team Four solid teams with a combined record of 127-23 reached the Final Four in 1986, and the team to emerge on top was the Louisville Cardinals, who finished with a 30-7 record. Their star freshman forward collected 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead his team to victory. The Cardinals ended their season with a 17 win streak and a national title. 1984 Georgetown Team In a match-up featuring two star centers, the Georgetown Hoyas beat the Houston Cougars to take the 1984 NCAA title. Both players would go on to have stellar NBA careers, but in the championship game, it was the sparkling performance by Georgetown's two freshmen, who combined for 33 of the Hoyas 84 points to help them win the title. 1983 North Carolina State Team The 1983 North Carolina State team is one of only three ESPN College Hoops classic teams to have recorded double-digit losses but still won the NCAA championship. What makes their title run remarkable is that their margin of victory for each of their four tournament wins was less than eight. Helped by their opponents poor free-throw percentage, the Wolfpack's opponents combined to shoot a measly 56.8 percent from the line. 1983 Houston Team A coach's offensive play call that proved futile plagued the heavily favored 1983 Houston team en route to their 31-3 NCAA championship runner-up finish in 1983. Coming strong out of halftime, they went on a 17-2 run to grab a seven point lead. Unfortunately their coach then opted to implement a spread offense, and as a result, the opposing North Carolina State Wolfpack became the first team to win an NCAA title despite having double digit losses in the regular season. 1982 North Carolina Team With a 32-2 record, astounding finishes and clutch plays were the norm for the 1982 NCAA championship North Carolina team. With time winding down in the second half of the title game, their freshman guard swished a 16-foot shot for the left side to end Georgetown's title hopes. History would later mark that shot as the moment when that freshman guard began a college and NBA career that would arguably rank as the greatest ever. 1981 Indiana Team Two players shared the same last name and an NCAA title victory in 1981 with the 26-9 Indiana squad. On the defensive end we saw the only player to make the All-NCAA Tournament team while scoring less than 10 points. On the offensive end, their star point guard made history by being the only freshman guard to be the leading scorer in a national title game. 1979 Indiana State Team If there's one big "what if?" question for the 1979 Indiana State Sycamores' 33-1 runner-up team, it would be "what if their star forward had not injured his shooting thumb in the final game of his college career?" Would they have won the championship had he been able to shoot pain-free? Their star guard also helped lead their team to the Final Four in its only NCAA Tournament appearance. 1979 Michigan State Team A rising star in the 1979 Michigan State lineup showed hints of his future NBA glory as he led his team to a 26-6 record and an NCAA title. His team's opponent, a 33-0 Indiana State team, was gunned down by the Spartan sophomore, who led all scorers with 24 points. Further asserting his excellence were his back-to-back Final Four Most Outstanding Player and NBA Finals MVP awards, an achievement unmatched by any other player. 1975 UCLA Team The Bruins (28-3) led a charmed life throughout the tournament in 1975. The final game for the legendary coach who had guided them to nine previous titles saw their star center score 28 points, and their opponents hit only 25% of their shots. North Carolina State, which had won the championship the year before, did not make the tournament. 1974 North Carolina State Team In 1974, a hard head saved North Carolina State's spectacular 30-1 season that ended with an NCAA title and brought down a dyansty. After NC State's star forward took a nasty fall that left him unconscious for four minutes, many were worried if State would even be able to compete against UCLA. Led by their returning star in a game where they erased an 11 point second half deficit, the underdog Wolfpack became the new champions. 1972 UCLA Team Very few teams could compare to the dominance shown by the 1972 UCLA Bruins, who won their tournament games by an average of 18 points, and etched their perfect 30-0 record in the history books. Even with the Bruins down by a season high seven points in the final, the outcome was never in doubt. Behind their All-American center, the Bruins dismantled their other opponents in the tournament by margins of 19, 16, and 32. 1969 UCLA Team Consider by some to be the greatest team of all time, the 1969 UCLA Bruins dominated teams all season long. With arguably the best player in college basketball history at center, UCLA's fifth NCAA championship in six years was won in an anti-climatic final. Their defense in the final game restricted their opponent's field goal percentage to 29.3%, and the Bruins coasted to victory. Their toughest challenge came in the semifinals when their opponent came back from a nine point deficit to within one in the final moments of the game. 1968 Houston Team Hot steam blew out of the 1968 Houston team when they tumbled to 4th place after losing in the 3rd place game against Ohio State. Entering the tourney undefeated, Houston lost in the national semifinals against UCLA 101-69 when their top scorer (averaging 37.6 points per game entering the Final Four) was held to 10 points against the Bruins diamond-and-one defense. 1964 UCLA Team UCLA's college basketball dynasty started in 1964 with an undefeated 30-0 season. Despite not having any players over 6'5". UCLA went on to win the first championship of many more to come. Little did anyone know this was merely the beginning of one of the most successful careers in college coaching history. __________ / Trophies \___________________________________________________________________ *NOTE* Each trophy costs 30 pts.
