This guide will update your default Madden NFL 2003 rosters to complete accuracy for the start of the 2002-2003 NFL football season, September 5, 2002. These roster transactions are not easily made. Free Agent space is extremely tight, so you may not be able to release some of these players. My suggestion is to edit the players, changing them into other players that are needed elsewhere in the league. The Free Agent pool only allows for 256 players, so which fills up quickly. The only way you'll be able to make all these moves is to be creative with your editing. Instead of cutting a player, edit him into a player that you'll need to create anyway. You won't be able to change his position, college, or some other attributes, but you will be able to get around the free agency limit. Credits for this work start with splodem, who's compiled an excellent list of transactions. He's worked hard to provide accurate rosters and a lot of players that need to be created. He's the man behind all this. AlleyViper, Remer88, Suspect7, and TD3325 also played integral roles in the roster editing section of this guide, and they should be properly acknowledged. Many web sites were used to compile this extraordinary work, including OurLads, ESPN, and NFL official web sites. If you find any errors, please e-mail me with proof of the error. If I forgot to credit you for any reason, please e-mail me. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Frequently Asked Questions About Roster Updates -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Q: How do I turn on the Salary Cap? A: If the option to turn on the Salary Cap is grayed out, you must first delete your Settings File. Next, reset your game. The option to turn it on will return. - - - Q: How do you edit the players? A: Choose Features menu. Then choose Rosters. Choose the player you would like to edit and then press X to begin. - - - Q: How do I retire a player? A: Choose Features menu. Then choose Rosters. Choose the player you would like to edit and then press X to begin. Now lower all of the player's stats to zero. He will not be removed from the game, but his overall rating will be extremely low, therefore making him useless, and, effectively, retired. - - - Q: I cannot release a player! I don't have enough players at this position! A: Yes, this IS a problem. It is not my fault, nor is it anyone's fault. You will need to find a creative way of fixing this, though. Try creating a player to fill in for the player you need to cut, or try editing an already existing free agent and rename him to a player you need. Visit the NFL official web site < http://www.nfl.com > for a complete list of NFL rosters, so you know who to create. - - - Q: I cannot release a player! There are too many free agents! A: Yes, this IS a problem. It is not my fault, nor is it anyone's fault. You will need to find a creative way of fixing this, though. Instead of creating players to fill roster slots, edit free agents. Then, you can slowly unpopulate the free agent pool. There is no true solution to this problem; be creative and try your best. - - - Q: I don't want to do all this work! A: If you do not want to do this work, I recommend picking up a SharkPort and downloading EA's roster updates or Wallace Nail's roster updates. Both are incredibly accurate. Search Google for these files once you own a GameShark SharkPort device. - - - NOTE: Do not e-mail me about these rosters unless you have a correction. I can not help you solve the problems of roster space. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Roster Editing -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Bears LG#60 Terrence Metcalf Bills FB#44 Jarrett Ferguson Bills CB#30 Kevin Thomas Bills Trey Teague (#70) Bills Travis Henry (#20) Bills Tony Driver (#25) Broncos KaRon Coleman (#21) Broncos Michael Sinclair (#68) Broncos B. ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Before you start to play Madden, I suggest you change the controller to Config 2. It explains positions you may or may not know for casually watching football on television. Read up. ========= Backfield ========= QB - Quarterback ---------------- Also referred to as your field general, the QB is the man who takes the ball after it has been hiked. He is extremely valuable to the team. Quarterbacks are responsible for passing to your receivers, reading the defenses, and making well placed handoffs to your runningbacks. ================= RB - Runningbacks ================= HB - Halfback ------------- The halfback is another position vital to the success of your offense. A good halfback will be expected to run inside, run outside, make blocks to protect the quarterback, and catch screen passes. Halfbacks are usually very quick and have good hands. Halfbacks are often called runningbacks, RB. However, RB is the term most often deemed when reffering to either a HB or FB. FB - Fullback ------------- The fullback provides your team with the blocking off the line of scrimmage. All halfbacks know that the fullback is their best friend. The fullback clears open pathes for your halfback. On short-yardage situations, the fullback can be expected to punch it in for a yard or two. 3DRB - 3rd Down Running Back ---------------------------- Your quickest runningback will most likely be selected for this. This is the runningback your team brings on third downs, hence the name. ============== RV - Receivers ============== WR - Wide Receiver ------------------ At least one good wide receiver is key to every team. You'll have about two wide receivers on most plays, and sometimes you might have five receivers. The position requires extreme speed, great hands, and the ability to get open. TE - Tightend -------------- Super Bowl team always feature a strong tightend. The tightend is a go-to-guy for your quarterback. Tightends are expected to block, catch over the middle passes, and run out patterns towards the sidelines. A good tightend has your team's best set of hands and is built big, but still has decent speed. It is preffered that a tightend be tall and weigh a lot to break tackles on short passes and to give the quarterback a bigger target. ====================== OL - Offensive Linemen ====================== T - Offensive Tackle -------------------- The tackle (LT Left Tackle or RT Right Tackle) lines up on the outside of the line of scrimmage. Offensive tackles provide passing defense for your quarterback. They must be quick on their feet in addition to extremely strong. G - Offensive Guard ------------------- Guards (LG Left Guard or RG Right Guard) provide your team with the inside run game blocking. Offensive guards are usually the strongest players in the entire NFL. C - Center ---------- The center hikes the ball to the quarterback. A center must be extremely intelligent and must constantly be aware of the game around him. Centers are usually paid the biggest bucks, out of all offensive linemen, because of their vital importance to the game. There are not many extremely capable centers. ====================== DL - Defensive Linemen ====================== DE - Defensive End ------------------ The defensive end plays on the outside of the defensive line (LDE Left Defensive End or RDE Right Defensive End). Defensive ends are quick players who must be able to catch the quarterback if he starts to scramble. Defensive ends usually pick up the team's most sacks. DT - Defensive Tackle --------------------- Defensive tackles (LDT Left Defensive Tackle, RDT Right Defensive Tackle, or NT Nose Tackle) are the biggest players on the defensive squad. DTs are the first line of defense against a pounding running offense. If you can't stop the run, you can't win football games. Simple enough, you need a strong defensive line. And it starts with the defensive tackle. ================ LB - Linebackers ================ OLB - Outside Linebacker ------------------------ Stopping the outside run and the short pass are the outside linebacker (LOLB Left Outisde Linebacker or ROLB Right Ouside Linebacker). Your OLB must be quick and agile, but his tackling skills musn't suffer because of his speed. MLB - Middle Linebacker ----------------------- The middle linebacker plays the short passes over the middle and stops the inside runs. Middle linebackers are bigger than the outside linebackers. The middle linebacker is often the "defensive quarterback". He's your defensive leader. A strong middle linebacker is key to a strong defense. ==================== DB - Defensive Backs ==================== CB - Cornerback --------------- Cornerbacks cover the receivers. Cornerbacks need to be as fast as the receivers they cover to be effective. With good hands, your cornerbacks might also intercept a lot of passes thrown their way. FS - Free Safety ---------------- The free safety, also named weak safety, plays the side of the field without the tightend. He's effectively "free" to do as he so pleases, doubling up a receiver, blitzing the quarterback, etc. SS - Strong Safety ------------------ Your strong safety must be able to make strong tackles. He'll be covering the tightend or possibly a receiver, so he also needs to be quick on his feet. The strong safety is a critical position when building a team. ================== ST - Special Teams ================== K - Kicker ---------- Your kicker will attempt your field goals, point after touchdown (PAT), and, by default, kick the ball off. A strong kicker is important, but don't sacrifice your kicker's kick accuracy. Nothing is worse than missing an easy kick. KOS - Kick Off Specialist ------------------------- This is where your strongest kicker/punter should be placed. In addition to regular duties, this player also kicks off for your team. P - Punter ---------- The punter, obviously, punts the ball. Hopefully, your punter has high kicking power. You may switch your punter in for kickoffs if he is stronger than your kicker. The punter punts the ball away after a safety, too. LS - Long Snapper ----------------- The longer snapper is your center on punting plays and kicking plays. Veteran players usually perform this job, as they have more experience in tight situations. PR - Punt Returner ------------------ Most often your cornerbacks and wide receivers play this position. Be careful starting your best players at PR, though. You don't want a senseless injury to your best wide receiver on a meager special teams return. KR - Kick Returner ------------------ Like PR, the KR is another position that requires speed. Don't risk injuries to your best players, though. KR and PR are often third or fourth string positions. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Chapter Four: Football Terms _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ If you don't understand some of the football speak, you'll want to check this section out. Backfield --------- It's the area between the two tightends behind the line of scrimmage. If there is only one tightend, then the backfield is drawn from where the other tightend would line up. In the backfield you'll find the QB and RBs. Conversion ---------- Either PAT (Point After Touchdown) or 2 Point Conversion. The PAT is a field goal attempt for one point after a touchdown. The 2 Point Conversion is a regular play ran after a touchdown in hopes of gaining two points. End Zone -------- Also known as pay dirt. This is where you need to reach to score a touchdown. Field Goal ---------- The kicker's attempt at kicking the ball through the goal post. Worth three points. If this attempt is successful, the offensive will kick off. If the attempt fails, the defense gets the ball from the spot of the kick, not the line of scrimmage. Interception ------------ When the defensive team catches the QB's pass. Play Action ----------- When the QB fakes a handoff to the RB in hopes of fooling the defense. Wideout ------- Another name for a wide receiver. I'll be adding more terms next release. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Chapter Five: Play Online With A Cable Modem _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This is an alternative, for those people who want to go online with Madden NFL 2003, yet they do not want to pay (or wait) for Sony's adaptor. This will only work with the PlayStation 2 console, so don't go trying it with your GameCube or Xbox. In addition, I am writing this for the NORTH AMERICAN version. If you happen to get a version other than that, this might not work. ============ Requirements ============ - Linksys 10/100TX USB Ethernet Adapter - cable modem - ethernet cable - USB cable to connect adapter to PS2 - Sony PS2 Memory Card (400KB Free) - Sony PS2 System - Sony PS2 Madden NFL 2003 Game - USB Keyboard for PS2 (recommended, although not entirely needed) ========================= Diagram: How To Set It Up ========================= You'll need to hook your ethernet adaptor up to your cable modem with an ethernet cable, before you can do anything. Next, use your USB cable to hook the ethernet adaptor up to your PS2. This is not complicated, as long as your cables are long enough. Make sure the cables you buy can reach sufficiently: you don't want the cables to tear or pull the adaptor or PlayStation 2 apart. Here is a useful diagram: +-------+ +--------+ +--------+ | Cable +--ethernet--+Ethernet| USB | Sony | | Modem | cable |Adaptor +--cable---+ PS2 | +-------+ +--------+ +--------+ ============== Getting Online ============== - Turn on Madden NFL 2003 - Select Features, Online - Create a new account - Load, dark blue screen appears - Add new settings - Proceed until it asks to select hardware - Select the Linksis 10/100TX USB Ethernet Adapter - Proceed until it asks for a password - If you need one to connect, select 'yes'--chances are you can just press 'no' - Your next two choices need to be 'auto' - It's all set up, so quit - Now go online, through Features, Online - Make a profile, register it online - Begin a game, making sure all goes well - Those are all the steps you must complete, in order. Do that exactly, and you will have no problems. I take NO RESPONSIBILITY if you screw something up, so work on this at your own risk. - There is a chance that you may not be able to get online, due to any possible reason, including your ISP not being compatible. I will not be held responsible for that, either, so check with your ISP before you go out and spend money on these items. - If you have problems with this, do not e-mail me. If you e-mail me about going online with any question, I will ban you forever. Ask at the message boards for help, but do not e-mail me. - If you are having problems finding the right material, print this document out and bring it to Best Buy, Radio Shack, or another similiar place. They should be able to hook you up with the right components. It might be pricey, but this is the only alternative to getting online with Madden NFL 2003. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Chapter Six: Frequently Asked Questions _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Q: Is this game blue-disc? While it has been tuned down some (in Madden NFL 2002 you could get millions of tokens), you can still earn a good deal of tokens for little work using this trick. Good luck. Edit the speed of every player on the Redskins's defense to 15. Now choose the Dallas Cowboys and begin to players' ratings. Edit the runningbacks (HB, FB) and receivers (WR, TE) to 0 overall. Edit the offensive linemen (T, G, C) to 99 pass block rating. Edit the QB to 0 Passing Power and 0 Passing Accuracy. Edit the QB to 99 Speed, Acceleration, Carrying, Awareness, Stamin, and Agiliy. Save your roster. Name it "Cheat" and be sure it is loaded. Begin a 2 Minute Drill on All-Madden difficulty, against the Redskins' defense. Start a Two Minute Drill. Choose All-Madden, and then the Ravens' defense. Offensively, select the Cowboys and then load your profile. Begin to play. Choose Single Back and then pick a passing play. Hot Route your second slot WR and your TE. Hot Route them to a buttonhook pattern. Instead of performing the play, however, take off with your QB towards the endzone, running down the right sideline. Repeat this as often as needed to score touchdowns. The more touchdowns you score, the more tokens you will receive. Expect about 500 tokens for performing this correctly. _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Chapter Ten: Madden Cards Encyclopedia _______________________________________________________________________________ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ NOTE: Alastor AlisleX is the man behind this section. If it was not for him, then the Madden Cards Enclyclopedia would be absolutely nothing in comparison. Thanks a lot man! Each of the cards are designated by their name, number, duration of affect, rarity, value if sold back, and their power rating as appraised by the game makers. The Card Description is the quote off of the back of the card, verbatim. Note however, that the rarity of some cards is very much off, and I do not at this time have the data to be able to share the true rarity of the cards. We are working on that, but are awaiting the release of NASCAR Thunder 2003 so that we get an accurate sample with all of the cards unlocked. Any time a "/" is used in this FAQ it denotes the difference between bronze, silver and gold information on the card. Thus a card that is good for 1 play as a bronze, 1 quarter as a silver, or 1 half as a gold will have "P/Q/H" to denote play, quarter and half respectively. In the cases where the variable by card type is a percentage, the percentages are listed. Thus, a card that affects a given attribute by 25% as a bronze, 50% as a silver, and 75% as a gold would be shown as 25/50/75% respectively. A "G" represents "Game". Note also that not all cards can be earned in packs. Some will only come as a result of getting a gold in a mini camp. Some will only come as a reward for beating a game situation. Some will only be available through another means. We are currently working on this information but again are awaiting the release of NASCAR Thunder 2003 so that we may test these with a proper sample. Some of the cards have bugs. I have not had a chance to play test all of the cards yet. I am certain there are more bugs out there. I have found some on my own. Some of the information listed on this page may be incorrect. If you find any new information or have a correction to make, feel free to contact us. Your contribution helps others! Paul Hanlin Jr has contributed the passerby cheat information, thanks! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Player Cards (#001 - #150) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Cards #1 - #150 are player's cards, and have a picture of the player on the front; they come in bronze, silver or gold. The backs of all the player cards all have the same explanation to them, except for the career stats of the player the card belongs to. Those are not listed here. Rarity: 1 in 1300 Duration of affect: Unlimited Value if sold: 10 Power rating: 0 Card Description: "[Player's name] will be added to the roster as a Free Agent." Card Explanation: It is unconfirmed that the player in question will be added to your franchise roster. He will be given the age of 36, and his attributes will be optimized to reflect the best he ever achieved in his NFL career. Yes, you have to pay the player, and some are quite expensive. We are currently gathering that information and will be adding it shortly. To the best of my knowledge, Historic players retire via the same formula as other players do. 151. Troy Aikman 168. This section provides an invaluable look at what each category means. Now you can decide who to cut and who to keep, without relying solely on the OVR rating for a player. Thanks to Scott Taylor (Development Director of Tiburon - Electronic Arts), we now know exactly what each category means. Very useful information. Thanks also goes to SystemofaLetDown for finding this information on the IGN message boards. This information is directly from Scott Taylor. I've only formatted it and reworded some confusing sections. Most of the challenges are no problem on Rookie or Pro, but when you get to All-Pro or All-Madden, they can become unbelievably tough. Consult this guide and work your way to unlocking even the toughest cards. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How To Cheat ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you simply can't do this, you can always cheat. I don't reccommend it, but you can quite easily cheat. First, turn off Auto-Save. Next, save your rosters as CHEAT. Go to your CHEAT rosters and edit any players that are involved in the Mini-Camp. For example, to easily complete the Dallas Cowboys Rookie Ground Attack game, edit Emmitt Smith's ratings to 99 and lower the Cowboys' defensive players (Dat Nguyen and Roy Williams, the guys trying to stop Emmitt Smith). Now the defense can't even touch Emmitt Smith as he runs for a lot of yards and points. You should have no problem doing this or any other Mini-Camp if simply adjust the appropriate players. Now load the CHEAT rosters any time you want to cheat in Mini-Camp (because they have altered abilities), and use the regular rosters any time you want to play a normal, fair game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground Attack ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROOKIE: Dallas Cowboys Offense: Emmitt Smith, Robert Thomas Defense: Dat Nguyen, Roy Williams Reward: Human Plow Bronze PRO: Washington Redskins Offense: Stephen Davis, Bryan Johnson Defense: Jeremiah Trotter, Darrel Green, David Terrell Reward: Human Plow Silver ALL-PRO: Cincinnati Bengals Offense: Corey Dillon, Lorenzo Neal Defense: Tadeo Spikes, Steve Foley, Lamont Thompson Reward: Human Plow Gold ALL-MADDEN: Chicago Bears Offense: Anthony Thomas, Daimon Shelton Defense: Rosevelt Colvin, Warrick Holdman, Mike Green Mike Brown Reward: Barry Sanders Historic Player Card What you really have to do is use your stiff-arm techniques to perfection, in addition to moving laterally. Head through the open hole without using your speed burst while you're behind or on the line of scrimmage. Wait until you've hit the hole, then use a well timed stiff-arm to push one defender away. Hopefully your fullback can take out one defender, leaving you with the others. Before the defense tries to tackle you, cut down in the opposite direction, away from direction the play was designed for. For example, if it was pitch left, you'll want to start by crossing the line of scrimmage from the left, but as a defender tries to tackle you, cut back right with a stiff arm; the computer's defense doesn't make tackles too well while you're running laterally across the field. This is hard challenge to unlock Barry Sanders, but a good mix of stiff-arm and speed bursts will hopefully help.
