------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance Microsoft Xbox Dog Tags FAQ v1.1 by savior kevinkwalter@yahoo.com Contents 1. Introduction 2. Version History 3. General Information 4. Unlocking Information 5. Tanker Tags 6. Plant Tags 7. Special Thanks 8. Legal Information 9. Contact Information ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- == INTRODUCTION =============================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This FAQ is for the Microsoft Xbox version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. I've written this FAQ because those that are written for the PlayStation2 version of the game (Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty) do not carry over to the Xbox version, due to a few differences in the games. Most notably is the fact that Substance has MORE dog tags. You can hold up the Marines in the Holds of the Tanker in this version of the game, and some of them have dog tags. This FAQ is now complete, with all of the information for 100% of the dog tags in the game, as well as full unlocking info and lots more. If you find any errors, incorrect information or know something that you feel should be added to the FAQ, please send me an email and let me know. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- == VERSION HISTORY ============================================================ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 1.1 11/19/2002 - Removed the Coming Soon section, as it is now unnecessary Version 1.0 11/13/2002 - Finally, the first full version of this FAQ - Added all info for Plant/Extreme tags - Added Unlocking Info for the Blue Wig - Added more info on hard to find tags in the Plant section - Added Konami Dog Tag Campaign info in the General Information section - Added a few more (well-deserved) Special Thanks Version 0.6 11/12/2002 - Changed Unlocking Info for Bandana (Tanker); previously incorrect - Changed Unlocking Info for Stealth (Tanker); previously incorrect - Added Unlocking info for Orange Wig (Plant) - Added "Tough Guys" info for Tanker/Very Easy, Tanker/Easy and Tanker/Normal - Added "Hang-Drop-Catch" to the General Information section - Added a new name to the Special Thanks section - Added all info for Plant/Hard tags - Added more info on hard to find tags in the Plant section - Added detailed info on hard to find tags for Tanker/Very Easy, Tanker/Easy and Tanker/Normal Version 0.5 11/11/2002 - Added all info for all Plant/Normal tags - Added a Special Thanks section - Added more info on hard to find tags in the Plant section - Added more info in the General Tips section - Unlocking info for Stealth (Plant) added Version 0.4 11/10/2002 - Completed all info for all Tanker tags for every difficulty - Added all info for all Plant/Very Easy tags - Added all info for all Plant/Easy tags - Added Unlocking Info for Brown Wig Version 0.3 11/09/2002 - Added all locations for Plant tags - Began adding all names, D.O.B and blood types for Tanker and Plant tags Version 0.2 11/08/2002 - Added detailed info on getting ALL of the Tanker Hold tags. - Added a General Information section - Added an Unlocking Information section Version 0.1 11/07/2002 - Started FAQ and finished Tanker tag locations for all difficulties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- == GENERAL INFORMATION ======================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Why do I want to collect Dog Tags? Collecting dog tags allows you to unlock bonus items that cannot be obtained otherwise. These bonus items give you Unlimited Ammo (Tanker/Plant), Invisibility (Tanker/Plant), Infinite Grip Strength (Plant) and Infinite Oxygen (Plant). See the UNLOCKING INFO section for more details. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. How do I get Dog Tags? All of the enemy guards in the game, as well as a few Marines are wearing dog tags. You can take them by sneaking up on an enemy and raising your weapon. The enemy will raise his hands. You should then walk around to the front of the enemy with your weapon still raised (see your manual to learn how to do this) and go into first-person view. Now point your weapon either at the enemy's head or crotch. The enemy will start to shake in fear and his dog tags will fall to the floor. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. What do I do with a guard who doesn't shake in fear? Some enemies will not give up their tags as easily as others. They will stand firm when you hold them up and even dare you to shoot them. There are a few different ways to handle this. A. Deafen Him While standing directly in front of a guard, point your weapon to either side of his head and fire a bullet right next to his ear. You can do this with any weapon that fires live rounds (NOT the M9) B. Wound Him Fire a single round from the USP or SOCOM into his arm, hand, leg, or foot. Do not shoot his head or torso... as this may kill him. C. Frighten Him If you have a large weapon like the Stinger Missile Launcher, point it directly into his face. If you choose A or B, after doing so, move the gun back to his face or crotch. He will now change his attitude and give up the tags. If you choose C, he'll start shaking right away and the tags will fall. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. How do I build up my Grip Strength? In order to get two of the Hold tags (one in Hold No. 1 and another in Hold No. 3) you will need to traverse the east wall catwalk. In order to do this you will either have to have full health or a Grip Level of 3. Raising your grip strength requires that you do 100 pull-ups. Find yourself a railing that you can hang off of, and then while hanging simply press and hold the shoulder buttons (or white and black buttons if using a different button configuration) at the same time to do a pull-up. Make sure that you wait until Snake has locked his elbows or the pull-up won't count. When you've done 100 you will get a call on the Codec and your meter will change to Level 2. After another 100 the meter will change but you won't get a call, so keep your eye on the meter to know when to stop. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Is there a quicker way to raise my Grip Level? A much quicker (albiet more dangerous) way to build up your Grip Level is by performing a series of Hang-Drop-Catches. To do this, you must be on a platform who's railing lines up with the railing on the level below it. In the Tanker Chapter you can do this in Hold No. 1, right from the platform you start on. Here's how it works. 1. Walk up to the railing and press Y 2. Once you're hanging press A 3. You'll start to drop, so IMMEDIATELY start tapping Y 4. You'll catch the railing below, press Y to get back on the platform 5. Go up the ladder to the top platform again and repeat the process There is also a place to do this in the Engine Room, right where you enter it. It's easier to do it here since there are stairs rather than a ladder, but if you're trying to make it to the Holds with full strength before building up your Grip Level, you won't be able to get back there if you do indeed HAVE to raise it to get those two tags. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Do I HAVE to build up my Grip Level? Actually, no, you don't. If you can keep your health full 'til you reach the Holds (or have Rations and can get it back to max) then you'll lose grip slow enough that you can make it through the Holds to get both tags. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Konami sent me a letter saying that my name would be on a tag... did you find my name on a dog tag? Probably not. I've heard/read that the most recent Konami Dog Tag Campaign was for the PlayStation2 release of MGS2: Substance which is due some time in 2003. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Do I get anything special for collecting every tag in the game? Yes you do. After collecting every tag in the game, finish your game. During the Clear Code and Save Game screens, pay attention to the bottom of the screen. You will see a message from Konami, directing you to a hidden web page where you can download MGS2: Substance wallpaper, icons and sound bytes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9. Will you give me the web page address? Absolutely not... don't even bother asking. This FAQ is my help to you to get 100%, but in order to get that reward you're going to have to earn it. Good luck, and be patient. The bonuses on that web page are worth the effort. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- == UNLOCKING INFORMATION ====================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unlock Bandana (Infinite Ammo - Tanker Mission) Collect a total of 50 dog tags in the Tanker Mission and complete the game. Go to the railing and press Y to hang from the outside of it. Now, press Up to go all the way to the other end of the room. Press Y once you reach the other end to swing back over the railing. He's in a spot where you don't have to worry about any of the Marines seeing you hold him up. The last Marine in this hold is up on the ledge on the right of the room. The only way to get here is to hang from the railing in Hold No. 1 (see above) and move into Hold No. 2 through the door where the Marine with the dog tag was. Again, hang from the railing and go through the second Hold the same way you went through the first. When you enter Hold No. 3 the Marine will be right in front of you, waiting for you to take his tags. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Easy (26) ------------------------------------------------------------------ ID | LOCATION | NAME | D.O.B. | BLD | ------|-----------------------------|-------------------------|--------|------| 000 | Navigational deck, wing | Olga Gurlukovich | 0923 | A | 001 | Aft deck | Nicholas M Capone | 1217 | O | 002 | Aft deck | Donal L Gilliland | 1228 | O | 003 | Aft deck | Joe T Holdren | 0915 | AB | 004 | Navigational deck, wing | Shaun P Wilson | 0513 | O | 005 | Deck-A, crew's quarters | Jeff K Hui | 1031 | B | 006 * | Deck-B, crew's quarters | Nobuyoshi Nishimura | 0218 | A | 007 * | Deck-A, crew's lounge | Tomomi Kato | 0101 | AB | 008 | Deck-A, crew's lounge | Anders E Leiro | 1122 | ? | 009 | Deck-A, crew's lounge | Skraktus Mercio | 0209 | O | 010 | Deck-D, crew's quarters | Gavin S Nash | 1206 | B | 011 | Deck-D, crew's quarters | David S Eastwick | 1108 | A | 012 | Deck-2, port | Kozaka Kh Henri | 0502 | ? | 013 | Deck-2, port | Gackt | 0704 | AAA | 014 | Deck-2, port | Thomas P Dohm | 0207 | AB | 015 | Engine room | Enrique Camacho | 0513 | O | 016 | Engine room | Takashi Ohari | 0512 | A | 017 | Engine room | Max C Wood | 0210 | ? | 018 | Engine room | John W Fleming | 1123 | AB | 019 | Engine room | Edward B Elston | 0108 | B | 020 | Engine room | Christopher D Dadah | 0303 | O | 021 | Hold No. 1 | Rodrigo Spinetti | 0918 | A | 022 | Hold No. 1 | Frank Gther | 1109 | B | 023 | Hold No. 3 | James N Janovsky | 0504 | O | 024 | Hold No. 3 | Abigail G Sanchez | 1017 | O | 025 | Hold No. 3 | Rafael Estaregue | 1113 | B | * indicates a guard that won't give up his tags easily TIP - One set of tags on the Navigational deck, wing is being worn by Olga. A Marine with a dog tag is on the platform. The next set of tags is quite difficult to obtain. It's easiest to get once you've obtained the Stealth Suit. Equip the Stealth Suit and go to the front of the Marine grouping. The Marine wearing the tags is the third from the right in the second row (and he is the only Marine in the room wearing boxer shorts). Pull your gun on the Marine right in front of him to get him to raise his arms, and then shoot him with an M9 dart to knock him to the floor. Now, pull your gun on the Marine with the tags to get him to raise his arms and you should be able to see the tags sparkling (in first-person view). Now, unequip your firearm and press the X button to put him in a headlock. Drag him to the left side of the room, letting go of the X button every few seconds and then pressing it again (this will keep him from passing out). Once there, equip your gun again and hold him up. The other way to do this (without the Stealth Suit) is to tranquilize every Marine to the right of the one you're after. You can then get behind him, put him in a headlock and drag him away to get his tags. .. Hold No. 3 ................................................................. The first guy is standing to the right of Metal Gear Ray and he keeps nodding off. He's in a spot where you don't have to worry about any of the Marines seeing you hold him up. The next set of tags is another where it's easiest to get with the Stealth Suit. Equip the Stealth Suit and go to the front of the Marine grouping, between them and the stage. The Marine wearing the tags is the fourth from the left (fifth from the right) in the front row. Pull your gun on him to get him to raise his arms and you should be able to see the tags sparkling (in first-person view). Now, unequip your firearm and press the X button to put him in a headlock. Drag him to the left side of the room, letting go of the X button every few seconds and then pressing it again (this will keep him from passing out). Once there, equip your gun again and hold him up. The first soldier is the one standing right in the first doorway of the Engine Room. The second is the guy who fixes the door near the exit to the Deck-2, port. TIP - If, after the Olga battle, you can't find one of the soldiers in the Deck-A, crew's loungs, leave the area via the southeast door and then re-enter. He should be there, now. TIP - Some enemies with tags only appear after certain events. These events will take place in the order they are listed below. -- Deck-C, crew's quarters appears after Olga boss battle -- Deck-D, crew's quarters appears after you enter the room in northeast corner of Deck-D -- Deck-A, crew's lounge appears after Olga boss battle -- Navigational deck, wing appears after walking to the east side of the area (opposite from Olga) .. Hold No. 1 ................................................................. The first one requires you to have built up your Grip to Level 3. From where you start, go down the first ladder. Go to the railing and press Y to hang from the outside of it. Now, press Up to go all the way to the other end of the room. Press Y once you reach the other end to swing back over the railing. A Marine with a dog tag is on the platform. The second Marine is walking around in the northwest corner of the room. I'm pretty sure he is the ONLY person moving on the floor. Wait 'til he moves to the north of the last crate before holding him up. In this spot the other Marines can't see him. The last Marine is standing in front of a crate in the southwest part of the room. There are two guys who are not part of the main group over here. The guy you want is further left and south than the other. .. Hold No. 2 ................................................................. The two Marines in this area are both at the northern edge of the main grouping of Marines, one on the left and one on the right. They are the two guys walking around, NOT the guys at the northern edge of the room just standing guard. Since the Marines move their sight from left to right as the projector changes, you need to time your hold up so that it starts right after the projector changes and the Marines move their heads. .. Hold No. 3 ................................................................. The first Marine you should grab is on the right side of the room. There are two over here when you first come in, but let them move a bit and one will make his way up and to the right of Metal Gear Ray, to a spot where no one can see him. The next guy is standing on the left side of the room, just north and left of the camera on the left (in front of the crate). Just make sure that the Marine patrolling between the group and the Commendant is walking away from you and not towards you when you hold him up. The next guy is the one I just mentioned, patrolling the area between the group and the Commendant. Wait for him to walk to the left or to the right of the group so he's out of their line of sight before holding him up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- EXTREME (34) --------------------------------------------------------------- ID | LOCATION | NAME | D.O.B. | BLD | ------|-----------------------------|-------------------------|--------|------| 000 | Navigational deck, wing | Olga Gurlukovich | 0923 | A | 001 | Aft deck | Sanae Shintani | 1221 | A | 002 | Aft deck | Aki Hitachi | 1024 | O | 003 | Aft deck | Mathieu Trepanier | 0609 | B | 004 | Navigational deck, wing | Yoshinori Onodera | 0909 | A | 005 | Deck-C, crew's quarters | Joshua D Casnocha | 0429 | ? | 006 | Deck-A, crew's quarters | Louis K Stevenson | 1031 | ? | 007 | Deck-B, crew's quarters | Michael D Rogers | 0818 | O | 008 | Deck-B, crew's quarters | Gianluca Peruzzo | 1121 | O | 009 | Deck-A, crew's lounge | Travis J Lujan | 1230 | A | 010 | Deck-A, crew's lounge | Brendan M Randall | 1014 | B | 011 | Deck-A, crew's lounge | Chris D Bernd | 1029 | O | 012 | Deck-D, crew's quarters | Chantelle M Blair | 1224 | B | 013 | Deck-D, crew's quarters | Eduard V Fernandez | 1031 | A | 014 | Deck-D, crew's quarters | Yoji Shinkawa | 1225 | AB | 015 | Deck-D, crew's quarters | Niko Ionixx Horn | 0215 | B | 016 | Deck-2, port | Adnan Hadzic | 0403 | B | 017 | Deck-2, port | Shu Tajima | 0928 | O | 018 | Deck-2, port | Stuart J Batchelar | 0307 | ? | 019 | Engine room | Masataka Nishiyama | 0402 | O | 020 | Engine room | Michael M Wong | 0307 | ? | 021 | Engine room | Manabu Nakamura | 0327 | A | 022 | Engine room | Simon P Sargent | 0601 | A | 023 | Engine room | Yosuke Kamezaki | 1225 | O | 024 | Engine room | Clarke A Baldwi | 0531 | O | 025 | Engine room | Hideki Sasaki | 1116 | AB | 026 | Hold No. 1 | Ho Yeung Tsang | 0215 | AB | 027 | Hold No. 1 | Ulf T Lundh | 0803 | B | 028 | Hold No. 2 | Christopher J Uzdanovich | 0908 | A | 029 | Hold No. 2 | Alex C Wilson | 0810 | ? | 030 | Hold No. 3 | Michael A Hare | 1222 | O | 031 | Hold No. 3 | Andrew N Bartlett | 0406 | AB | 032 | Hold No. 3 | Iiro Karvinen | 0713 | A | 033 | Hold No. 3 | Marcin A Cieslinski | 0630 | A | * indicates a guard that won't give up his tags easily TIP - One set of tags on the Navigational deck, wing is being worn by Olga.
