Whether you came here out of curiosity, or with questions to be answered I will try to help and improve your game. I am Windu, an Icon of GameFAQs.com. But, this is my 1st solo FAQ effort. Hang in there, if you have a major gripe about my FAQ, think something is amiss (TELL ME about typos, I'm a perfectionist and you'll get into my credits section.), have a question, comment or strategy, just contact me (above). You may notice that I use a lot of commas, but what can you do? I like commas. Have a problem with that, tough. Enough about me, what's this FAQ about? This FAQ is a small effort to help you keep track of which goals you have and have not done, and if you're having troubles with any certain aspect of the game, I will try to help. The majority of the FAQ is in the form of a checklist in neat-o little ASCII table form by yours truly. If you just want the checklist and not all of my little descriptions and such, the PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION is at the bottom of my FAQ. If you want to use this as a checklist, I've provided you with a box before each goal. I recommend a red marker, because I always find that they stand out the best against all of the text. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- +----------------+ | MVP Goals [02.]| +----------------+ First thing to note in this guide are ther multipliers. Each accomplishment has a base point value, which you will get if you achieve the task on the rookie difficulty. On Pro, that value is multiplied by two, on All-Star it is three, and on MVP the base value is multiplied by four. Each value posted in this guide is the base point value. NOTE: There is the difference between non-repeatable and repeatable goals: Repeatable goals can be completed however many times you wish, and multiple times per game. Example: If you hit 2 home runs in one game with PLAYER A, and 2 home runs in the same game with PLAYER B, you get points for both accomplishments. And of course, this is not applicable to the team-wide goals (For instance, you can only get the bonus for scoring 10 runs in one game ONCE per game). Anyways... The next day, if PLAYER A, PLAYER B, or even PLAYER X hit 2 more round- trippers, you cash in for that many more points. Non-repeatable goals are the polar opposite: You are only rewarded for them once EVER (ie Home Run Showdowns and Pitching Showdowns) I have written whether or not they are repeatable in the heading of each table. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | {02A.} In-Game Tasks (REPEATABLE) |MVP POINT VALUE| |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Win a game in extra innings | 25 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Score 10 runs in 1 game | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Hit 2 Home Runs with the same player in a game | 100 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit a Grand Slam in a game | 150 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit .600 in a game | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit .800 in a game | 75 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit 1.000 in a game | 120 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher pitch a Complete Game | 75 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher pitch a Shutout | 100 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher pitch a No-Hitter | 150 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher pitch a Perfect Game | 200 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player steal 3rd base | 25 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player steal home | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] *Have a player steal 2 bases in one game* | 50 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ These are accomplishments that you must complete in-game. They can be done in dynasty mode, or in an exhibition game, or whatever. Changing difficulty levels in-game does not work. Most of these goals are very easy...you will accomplish these with your dynasty sooner or later. I'm pretty sure that you can also set up in multiplayer mode and just get you/ your friend to help out do that kind of thing. I'll leave it at that for now, and confirm later whether or not I'm right about this. *This goal is not listed under "In-game goals" in the list featured in the game. It is listed under "Dynasty", but it can be accomplished (and rewarded) in an exhibition game. Thus, it is added in here. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | {02B.} Exhibition Game Goals (NON-REPEATABLE) |MVP POINT VALUE| |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Yankees in an exhibition game in Yankee Stadium| 75 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Redsox in an exhibition game in Fenway Park | 75 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Angels in an exhibition game in Anaheim | 75 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Giants in an exhibition game in SBC Park | 75 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Mariners in an exhibition game in Seattle | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Mets in an exhibition game in Shea Stadium | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Blue Jays in an exhibition game in Skydome | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Orioles in an exhibition game in Baltimore | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] *Beat the Cubs in an exhibition game in Chicago* | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat the Braves in an exhibition game in Atlanta | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat a AA team in an exhibition game with a AA team | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat a AAA team in an exhibition game with a AAA team | 50 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ These are goals that you can only set up for in the exhibition game mode. Fairly simple, just pick the team you want to use, pick the team that you want your opponent to be and go. Note that the computer team must be on the RIGHT screen (when picking teams) so they are the home team. -Exception are the last two (the AAA and AA games). Winning them shouldn't be too hard, just pick a team that you're comfortable with, and apply your skills that you have gained from Dynasty mode. *Although the in-game list suggests it can be done in Chicago, you only get the bonus and reward for doing it IN Wrigley Field (home of the Chicago Cubs). +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | {02C.} Home Run Showdown (NON-REPEATABLE) |MVP POINT VALUE| |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Albert Pujols in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Alex Rodriguez in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Jim Thome in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Richie Sexson in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Javy Lopez in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Carlos Delgado in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Frank Thomas in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Jason Giambi in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Sammy Sosa in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Jeff Bagwell in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Gary Sheffield in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Rafael Palmeiro in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Manny Ramierez in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Brett Boone in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Aubrey Huff in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Todd Helton in a Home Run Showdown | 50 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Although a bit difficult when starting out, HR showdowns get easier once you get used to them. If you feel like cheating, pick the opponent you want to beat as yourself, and switch at the last second by pressing start, and going into the controller options. If you have balls and want it the real way, some things to know are: Don't pick left-handed hitters to do your power-swinging. There is a glitch in this game that basically prevents even the best lefties to hit with any kind of real power, compared to the best righties in the game. If you want to win, just take your time and be patient. Take a nice righty with huge power. One of the highest that I can find is Frank Thomas (97 power with good contact to go with it. Get him for your dynasty..!). Just try to pul the ball in a field with shallow left field (Fenway maybe, if you can get it over the Green Monster). If you can't manage to pull it, stick with Yankee Stadium, which has a very shallow, hitter friendly right field porch or Fenway again, and try to hook it around Pesky's Pole (the foul pole) which is actually fairly close to you. With a bit of luck and some nice home runs, you shouldn't take too long to complete these. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | {02D.} Pitcher Showdown (NON-REPEATABLE) |MVP POINT VALUE| |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Randy Johnson in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Pedro Martinez in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Kerry Wood in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Mark Prior in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Jason Schmidt in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Curt Shilling in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Esteban Loaiza in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Roger Clemens in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Hideo Nomo in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Kevin Millwood in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Tim Hudson in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Livan Hernandez in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Eric Gagne in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat Billy Wagner in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Beat John Smoltz in a Pitcher Showdown | 50 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ As with the Home Run Showdown (above), the Pitching showdown tests your strengths and weaknesses in one aspect. Again, if you feel like cheating, pick the opponent you want to beat as yourself, and switch at the last second by pressing start, and going into the controller options. My recommendation for beating this is to use one of the better pitchers listed, or using a pitcher you're already used to from your Dynasty. I would recommend Roy Halladay perhaps, because he is a solid all-around pitcher, and I have some very useful strategies that work with him (tried and true!). Here are some strategies that will help you rack up some of your easy K's: When starting off a count, pitch him fastballs or cutters in around the low corners, or hard fastballs inside (just on the corner of the plate). Swinging strike one, or a foul ball. If you screw up, it will probably screw up and go to the middle of the plate. Hanging cutters are BAD. (insta-homer) For strike 2, try a pitch like another fastball outside (not off the plate). And strike 3, since you've gotten him used to fast pitches, they will swing straight through a nice changeup out over the heart of the plate most of the time. If you don't like doing that, set up the 1st two strikes with fast-to-medium pitches (not offspeed) over the strike zone. Then come with a curveball, slider or a slurve (or any breakingball for that matter, knuckelers work very well) WELL off the plate low. I'm talking a good half foot straight below his knees here. With any luck, he will swing and miss horribly. If not, try again or bust him in with heat inside. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | {02E.} Dynasty Goals (NON-REPEATABLE) |MVP POINT VALUE| |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit 35 Home Runs in a season | 25 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit 50 Home Runs in a season | 50 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit 60 Home Runs in a season | 100 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit 70 Home Runs in a season | 150 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player hit 74 Home Runs in a season | 250 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Some key things to remember when trying to hit for power: -Get a right-handed power slugger such as Frank Thomas [CHICAGO WHITESOX] or Jon Dowd* [SF GIANTS], who both work very well. I have also discovered the glory of Carlos Lee (also White Sox) because he has 90+ power against RIGHTIES and he is a righty himself. Now THAT is power. *Barry Bonds did not sign with the MLB Players Association this year (he's a jackass, what can ya do?) so Jon Dowd is his pseudo-replacement. For some reason, lefties won't hit half as many HRs as these guys (glitch). -Know park dimensions. Hit for power to pull in fields with shallow left fields (Fenway), and go to right field with the shallow right fields (Yankee stadium). -Don't ALWAYS hit for power or you will hurt your stats. Generally, you will have one man that stands out above the rest. This is the man you want to set your HR, slugging and RBI records with. But on the other hand, against lefties when your power (and contact) marks skyrocket, that could be your chance. Two outs, close game, runner on 2nd? Depending on your batter, and your confidence in him, and whether or not it's a lefty (or righty) on the mound you may just want to go for a single up the middle. Winning by 10 runs? Let one fly. -Work the counts. You will always get better pitches to hit on 2-0 or 3-1 counts. When you see the yellow dot signifying that the opposing pitcher screwed up, HOLD UP YOUR SWING! Sometimes you will want to just set the controller down and take 2 pitches in a row, regardless. Through an entire season, you will be hitting many home runs. It takes some skill and luck (keeping healthy) to hit 74 home runs, but it is possible. By the all star break on my 1st dynasty, Frank Thomas was over 45 HRs, playing on pro. -Give him lots of at-bats. The more ABs he has, the more chances of a homer. Simple as that. Put him in the 3rd or 4th spot in the lineup and you'll give him maybe 100 more at bats than the number 9 guy in your lineup, and some good RBI chances for him also. -Keep him happy. Give him a beefy contract that he's happy with, and give him lots of playing time. Make him an everyday player high in the lineup and he should be happy. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a player slug .700 in a season | 100 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player slug .800 in a season | 150 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player slug .864 in a season | 225 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ You will probably want to use the same player to get the high-as-possible slugging %, because you will be well on your way with your HR hitting quest. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a player get 150 RBI in a season | 125 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player get 175 RBI in a season | 175 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player get 192 RBI in a season | 225 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Same here. If he's in front of some good leadoff hitters, your home run slugger should be put into a lot of RBI situations. Get some good young guns and speed demons for the 1-2-3 if your guy is batting cleanup. In my dynasty, Chone Figgins (Aneheim), Shannon Stewart (Minnesota) and Christian Guzman (Minnesota) fit the bill perfectly. Whenever you get a hit with one of those guys (anybody over 85+ speed will do it fine) just steal 2nd and 3rd on 2 pitches. More on that next. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a player score 120 runs in a season | 100 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player score 150 runs in a season | 125 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player score 178 runs in a season | 175 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ This might get tricky for some of you, but there are things that you need to know: Leadoff hitters. Go and get a leadoff hitter. As mentioned before, Figgins, Stewart and Guzman all work wonders. A leadoff hit, then being able to steal two bases on the spot is the equivalent to a leadoff triple. With only one difference: It happens once or twice a game. Paired with a good heart of the order (RBI men, doubles hitters, HR kings), you will go a long way. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a player steal 100 bases in a season | 125 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player steal 120 bases in a season | 175 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player steal 130 bases in a season | 200 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Hate to say it, but I recommend Chone Figgins, Christian Guzman, and Shannon Stewart. Tips on stealing: -take a lead. Take your 2 steps (move the C Stick) then run. When you slide, do your headfirst slide outside of the bag. That means hold diagonal Up right on the C Stick when sliding. Warning: You will get picked off occasionally. But it's worth it. If it looks like he's gonna try to pick you off (at second, you will see the SS or 2B run in behind you, or if he waits an extra long time pitch when you're standing at 1st), then hold R and move your guy back to the base with the C stick. Anyways, this should be an easy goal to complete over a season. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a player bat .400 in a season | 175 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player bat .427 in a season | 250 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Not much I can say here that hasn't already been said, but I'll recap. -Work the counts. -Keep your man happy. -Don't ALWAYS try to pull the ball. Go the other way, or bloop one up the middle by holding up JUST a touch. Again, as you may have guessed...Chone Figgins is hitting over .400 for me so I know these methods work. Speedy leadoff hitter batting over .400=run almost every time. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a player get 200 hits in a season | 175 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player get 230 hits in a season | 200 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player get 258 hits in a season | 225 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Just see above...Use those same strategies to get some nice hits. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a player walk 150 times in a season | 150 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a player walk 200 times in a season | 200 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ I have real problems with this, because just about my only walks I get are intentional...But take lots of pitches and pay lots of attention. On All-Star/MVP, they throw more balls so you may actually have a better chance there. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a pitcher win 20 games in a season | 125 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher win 30 games in a season | 200 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher win 40 games in a season | 300 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ I like to work on a 3-man rotation for boosting stats. Get some high stamina guys, and use them over and over. You should get 40+ wins just after the All Star break if you win a lot. If your starter is still fatigued before his start from lack of rest, THAT is when you send in your #4 starter. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a pitcher get an ERA < 2.50 in a season | 75 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher get an ERA < 2.00 in a season | 125 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Well, not much I can say here. Keep the ball low in the zone, hit your targets and go deep into ball games. If you give up 2 runs in a game, don't just go into the 5th inning because your average will go up. Try to go 8 or 9 innings before you go into the pen unless you REALLY get into trouble. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a pitcher get 30 saves in a season | 100 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher get 40 saves in a season | 125 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher get 50 saves in a season | 150 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher get 60 saves in a season | 175 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Getting 60 saves in a season is a tough task, mathamaticly. Simple math: 162/60=2.7 -162 games in a season -60 saves required -You gotta get a save a little UNDER once in every 3 games. That means going all out with your closer, not blowing anything, and giving him every opportunity possible. To get a save: -come into the game in the 8th or 9th inning, then finish the game (getting the final out) -you must COME IN to the game when your team has a lead of 3 or less against the other team. -if you give up the lead/tie the game, it's a blown save and you gotta try again next game. -if you come into the game in the 8th with a save situation, and your team scores enough runs to make your lead more than 3 runs it's still a save situation Kinda complicated if it's new to you but you'll catch on. But because you want to save AS MANY games as possible if you have a 3-run lead in the 8th inning, don't hesitate to bring in your closer. This is because if you wait till the 9th to bring him in, you might blow the situation with a run in your half of the 9th. Not good. Hope you caught all that. +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ | [ ] Have a pitcher get 300 K (strikeouts) in a season | 125 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher get 350 K (strikeouts) in a season | 175 | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [ ] Have a pitcher get 385 K (strikeouts) in a season | 255 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+---------------+ Work on a 3 man rotation to give your pitchers as many chances as possible and use my K strats mentioned above (in the pitcher's showdown). K's in dynasty are harder to get, but not impossible. If you find you get too tired after throwing a lot of pitches, you can adjust how fast you get tired in the slider adjustments. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [06.] | +---------------------+ 02/09/06 Well, that was my guide, I hope you enjoyed it and I hope it helped you with whatever you were looking for. That's what I made it for. I performed a spellcheck in Corel Workperfect 11 (...I think it was Version 11). *Confirmed, I DID use Corel Version 11. Yes, I know you don't care. Thank you. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
