VERSIONS/CREDITS ================================ INTRODUCTION In Rally-X, you run a car about on a course with other cars chasing you and try to collect ten flags before running out of fuel or crashing. As your fuel runs down they get a bit faster than you, although you have ways to escape them. Each way is costly, though. You can kick smoke out of your tailpipe which will stun cars for a bit, but that loses fuel. Ducking around too much and ignoring flags also costs time. The mazes get progressively tougher and the game piles the cars on until it's pretty much impossible near level eight or so. Even with bonus levels every four stages, it's a bit oppressive, as cars get faster and more numerous(three up to eight.) Cheating with MAME I found I could barely get all the flags before my flags ran out--with the other cars FROZEN. Rally-X suffers from a lack of balance that New Rally-X never fully addresses. I can't claim to be an expert on the game, but it is a neat one and I figured people would be interested in maps. This document should have an accompanying GIF. I submitted one to GameFAQs and it got posted. ENEMY AI I've seen cars turn away from you when you run straight at them. For the most part they will trail you although you can fake them out. UX X XPX X X M U=you, P=pit, M=them. It seems random which way they'll take although they seem to prefer going straight. That takes less time. With a lot of cars you may want to sucker them near a ditch. If you can get a bunch of cars straggling like that, they'll wind up bashing against each other a bit, leaving you free to get flags. SCORING --100 for first flag with one car, then 200, etc. up to 1000 --double bonus if you get the S flag until end of level or you're killed --10 points per sliver of fuel left, maximum ~ 6000 but of course you'll wind up with much less --only extra man at 20000 --fuel recharged when you die --you can solve a board with fuel run out. However, you seem to use less fuel as it gets very low, so you may just get a 40-point fuel bonus or something. --indirectly related to scoring: cars get faster quicker on higher levels --everything's free on the challenge level until you run out of fuel, after other cars try to chase you down. You can still run into them while they're standing still, and you can also waste smoke screens as well. You can also drive into rocks, so be alert! STRATEGY General: --develop peripheral vision so you can keep tabs on where cars are coming from --when going into a corner, look to make sure you aren't going to get trapped --remember that turning takes time, and you can't turn on a dime. Fortunately that goes for the enemy cars as well. Specifics: --move away from the cars at the bottom quickly. In later levels get off to the side so that the cars above don't race down and wipe you out. --tailgating car will wipe the forward one out--you OR the other guy --you can go through enemy cars if you head straight down at the start of a level --enemy cars turn around after hitting a ditch --if there's a flag below you that you see on your first radar glimpse, move directly down to nab it. You'll have an even bigger jump than usual as the enemy cars are headed away from you. --pick up all flags in an area, then move on. --similarly, if one flag is isolated from the rest, get it last. It'll save fuel and cut down on lengthy treks that might get you killed anyway. Also consider saving a flag in a loop for last. --use double-wide highways well. Often you can steer away from an oncoming car rather easily. --huge plazas where you can move about are a bit awkward as you'll never go quite where you want and smoke isn't terribly effective. --if you must use smoke, use it at an intersection and right before when you're about to loop back around. Although don't loop back around too close. I've listed the backgrounds for up to level 15 as they rotate from there. All levels have light brown trim to inner boundaries and tan roads. 1-3: light green bushes on dark green background, light green inner boundary. 4-7: dark green soil, white flowers with red center, dark brown inner boundary 8-11: green soil, blue flowers with yellow center, aqua-green inner boundary 12-15: light green pines on green background, lavender inner boundary The maze number then cycles every 16 levels as above, but there are always eight cars. THere are a lot of T-intersections, which allow you to duck and dodge, and you're still as fast as the other cars. You probably won't need to use a smoke screen here. The most tricky places to get flags are the cul-de-sac in the upper right(use a smoke screen to get through this loop) and the far upper right. Starting on level four, cars start out slightly faster than you, and fuel's eaten up a bit more quickly. The upper right may also have long corridors where you may be running toward a rock and you don't know it. That T as you go straight up is annoying, too. The worst of both worlds--lots of open spaces in large extended corridors. None of the corners are particularly safe, and you can't even use the ruse of going down to start.
