Movie Anthology Brief Descriptions Rocky I: It's the film that inspired a nation - and won the 1976 Best Picture Oscar®. Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) is a Philadelphia club fighter who seems to be going nowhere. But when a stroke of fate puts him in a ring with the world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), Rocky knows that it's his one shot at the big time - a once in a lifetime opportunity to "go the distance" and come out a winner! Audiences and critics alike cheered this American success story of an "everyman" triumphing over all odds. Rocky II: It's the rematch of the century, as Rocky Balboa takes on Apollo Creed in this powerful follow-up to one of the most acclaimed movies in film history. After club fighter Rocky goes the distance with the world heavyweight champion, boxing fans clamour for a rematch. But Rocky, having sustained massive injuries in the bout, announces his retirement. Though he tries to make a new life for himself, Rocky realizes that he can't escape his true calling. The ring beckons once more, and the "Italian Stallion" must prepare for the fight of his life. Rocky III: Rocky battles his most powerful adversary yet - the ferocious Clubber Lang (Mr. T.). As Rocky fights his way into the hearts of millions, life couldn't be better. He scores ten consecutive wins, lands lucrative endorsement contracts, and becomes famous throughout the world. But when Clubber Lang K.O.s Rocky in a humiliating defeat, it becomes apparent that the "Italian Stallion" has lost his edge. Considering hanging up his gloves, Rocky receives encouragement from an unlikely ally: his old nemesis, Apollo Creed. With Creed's help, Rocky strives to regain the "eye of the tiger" before confronting Lang in a gruelling rematch for the world heavyweight championship. Rocky IV: East meets West when Rocky takes on a vicious Soviet fighter who literally killed his last opponent! Rocky proudly holds the world heavyweight boxing championship, but a new challenger has stepped forward: Drago (Dolph Lundgren), a six-foot, four-inch 261-pound fighter who has the backing of the Soviet Union. This time, Rocky's training regimen takes him to icy Siberia, where he prepares for a globally televised match in the heart of Moscow. But nothing can truly prepare him for what he's about to face - a powerfully charged fight to the finish in which he must defend not only himself, but also the honour of his country! Rocky V: Upon returning home from his latest triumph, Rocky learns that an unscrupulous financial advisor has lost all of his money. To make matters worse, his fight-related injuries force his retirement from the ring. So Rocky, his wife Adrian (Talia Shire) and his son Rocky Jr. (Sage Stallone) move to their old low-rent neighbourhood in South Philadelphia. There, the fighter must resolve the deep-rooted resentment held by his son, a bitterness that grows when Rocky trains Tommy Gunn (Tommy Morrison), a young boxer who soon rises to national prominence. When Tommy turns against his mentor and publicly taunts him, Rocky knows he must fight once more. 2. Game Modes Exhibition Mode The no nonsense, straight into the thick of things, mode. The Boxers The following list contains information relating to all 30 characters featured in the game. The stats included are out of a possible 50 (the higher the better). The stats are correct for the boxers as featured in the exhibition mode. There are some slight amendments in the movie mode but these are negligible. The stats affect the boxers as follows: Strength - This indicates the power of the boxer’s punches. Speed - This determines the boxer’s punch speed. Stamina - If this stat is high, the boxer’s can take more punishment. Determination - This determines the boxer’s ability to get up off the canvas. Higher numbers will mean that you’ll find it easier going when pressing that A button to get up. Movement - The speed of the boxer’s movement around the ring. He has a granite chin and remarkable heart. Rocky has the guts and courage of a great fighter but lacks finesse. His basic fight style can make him predictable; use this to your advantage." Name: Rocky Balboa 2 Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 31 Height: 5'11'' Weight: 202lbs Reach: 74'' Nickname: “The Italian Stallion” Strength: (40) Speed: (25) Stamina: (35) Determination: (42) Movement: (18) Trainer's Comments: "Rocky's skills and fitness have greatly improved under the watchful eye of Mickey. Since taking a battering from Apollo Creed in their first clash, he has been struggling to cope with a damaged eye, reducing his vision." Rocky still has his granite chin and superb punch strength. With many victorious defences of his belt his confidence has soared. However, his training regime has suffered, reducing his stamina and true staying power." Name: Rocky Balboa 4 Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 36 Height: 5'11'' Weight: 204lbs Reach: 74'' Nickname: “The Italian Stallion” Strength: (39) Speed: (24) Stamina: (34) Determination: (44) Movement: (19) Trainer's Comments: "Rocky's learnt everything there is to know about boxing. His focus, courage and strength are at a peak. His ability to take punishment is at an amazing level right now. Although slowing down slightly, Rocky has stepped up his training using old-fashioned, gruelling methods. His speed and power aren't quite what they used to be, but he's still tough as nails." Name: Rocky Balboa 5 Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 36 Height: 5'11'' Weight: 209lbs Reach: 74'' Nickname: “The Italian Stallion” Strength: (40) Speed: (25) Stamina: (30) Determination: (40) Movement: (25) Trainer's Comments: "Retired from boxing due to injury, Rocky now runs a gym and still trains daily. What he lacks physically he makes up with experience. Once a fighter, always a fighter', this still rings true for Rocky. He isn't in the ring anymore but he could still knock out most that come up against him." Name: Apollo Creed 1 Nationality: American From: Los Angeles, California Age: 32 Height: 6'2'' Weight: 210lbs Reach: 81'' Nickname: “The Master of Disaster” Strength: (22) Speed: (42) Stamina: (34) Determination: (20) Movement: (42) Trainer's Comments: "Apollo is very experienced and has the fastest hands of any heavyweight in the game. Get in close and throw quick combos to the body, then step out of range. Stay away from his stinging jabs, and remember to block his flurries." Name: Apollo Creed 2 Nationality: American From: Los Angeles, California Age: 33 Height: 6'2'' Weight: 220lbs Reach: 81'' Nickname: “The Count of Monte-Fisto” Strength: (28) Speed: (40) Stamina: (30) Determination: (27) Movement: (35) Trainer's Comments: "Apollo has learnt to take his training more seriously since his clash with Rocky. He's a little slower but much stronger, and determined to win. Skirt around Apollo, popping out jabs. Stay on the move early in the fight, then dish out the punishment mid-way through. Keep the pressure on and pray he runs out of steam before you do." Name: Clubber Lang Nationality: American From: Chicago, Illinois Age: 28 Height: 6'1'' Weight: 235lbs Reach: 78'' Nickname: “The Southside Slugger” Strength: (42) Speed: (31) Stamina: (41) Determination: (37) Movement: (27) Trainer's Comments: "You gotta stay switched on when fighting Clubber, he has immense KO power in both hands. Don't go toe-to-toe with Clubber, he's too strong. Wear him down with jabs and quick combos, wait for an opening and start throwing those big bombs for a KO finish." Name: Ivan Drago Nationality: Russian From: Moscow, Russia Age: 24 Height: 6'5'' Weight: 261lbs Reach: 84'' Nickname: “The Siberian Bull” Strength: (50) Speed: (25) Stamina: (38) Determination: (25) Movement: (22) Trainer's Comments: "Drago is a new breed of fighter, ultra-fit and trained to perfection. This guy is tough but he ain't unbeatable. To win against Drago you have to take the fight to him and break his spirit. Don't mess about with fancy footwork - just hit him hard, hit him fast and keep your guard up." Name: Tommy Gunn Nationality: American From: Jay, Oklahoma Age: 23 Height: 6'2'' Weight: 225lbs Reach: 80'' Nickname: “Tommy “The Machine” Gunn” Strength: (40) Speed: (35) Stamina: (40) Determination: (15) Movement: (30) Trainer's Comments: "Tommy Gunn is described as the 'Great white hope'. He's young, fast and has a lot of heart. Gunn has youth on his side and gallons of stamina in his tank. Use a balanced attack, stick and move then mix it up with a few body blow combos to keep him on his toes." Name: Randy Rate Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 26 Height: 5'10'' Weight: 193lbs Reach: 72'' Nickname: “Rapid Randy Tate” Strength: (4) Speed: (42) Stamina: (45) Determination: (21) Movement: (48) Trainer's Comments: "Randy Tate is a good fighter, sparring with many heavyweights. His relatively small size enables him to duck and dodge with ease. He's also a swift mover round the ring. Tate's usual fight tactic is to harass and frustrate. He likes to keeping moving, popping out jabs then shifting out of range. Push forward with this guy and disrupt his rhythm, keep the pressure on him until he makes a mistake, then grind him down." Name: Jack Reid Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 30 Height: 6'0'' Weight: 215lbs Reach: 75'' Nickname: n/a Strength: (32) Speed: (32) Stamina: (32) Determination: (32) Movement: (32) Trainer's Comments: "Jack is a stocky powerhouse with superb power. He's always in the gym training, and loves nothing more than a good tear up. Jack ain't the tallest of fighters and has a short reach. He tends to take two hits to land one of his own. Play a waiting game, block his blows, move around, keep throwing one-two's and you might just catch his chin." Name: Bob Cray Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 34 Height: 6'2'' Weight: 268lbs Reach: 80'' Nickname: “Battlin’ Bob Cray” Strength: (47) Speed: (11) Stamina: (49) Determination: (45) Movement: (8) Trainer’s Comments: "Cray is a seasoned fighter with an amazing chin. He can take just about any shot. Slightly overweight and in his boxing twilight years, Bob is looking for his last big pay cheque and will go that little bit extra to get it. His chin is his best attribute, but his soft stomach isn't. Sap his stamina by going to the body only, then go to the head." Name: Spider Rico Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 35 Height: 5'11'' Weight: 207lbs Reach: 72” Nickname: n/a Strength: (12) Speed: (42) Stamina: (37) Determination: (22) Movement: (47) Trainer's Comments: "Spider Rico's been on the circuit for over 15 years now and is past his best, but don't take him too lightly. Rico's strengths lie in his vast experience, he knows every trick in the book and will use them. Dodge his hooks, then counter with jab combos. Grind him down until he runs out of steam." Name: Dipper Brown Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 33 Height: 6'3'' Weight: 225lbs Reach: 80'' Nickname: ”The slick moving Dipper Brown” Strength: (42) Speed: (27) Stamina: (47) Determination: (12) Movement: (32) Trainer's Comments: "Dipper's an experienced journeyman who will give any boxer a run for their money, so stay alert! Dipper can pound all day, he also has good power too. Take the fight to him and keep piling the pressure on, at some point his concentration will slip, then step it up and let him have it." Name: Ernie Roman Nationality: American From: Houston, Texas Age: 37 Height: 6'2'' Weight: 289lbs Reach: 78'' Nickname: “Big, Bad, Ernie Roman” Strength: (47) Speed: (7) Stamina: (37) Determination: (48) Movement: (21) Trainer's Comments: "Ernie is a massive slugger with amazing punch strength. He's been round the block and knows the game. To beat Ernie you gotta take it easy during the first few rounds. Keep chipping away at him, dodging his powerful blows. When he starts to tire, hit him with all you've got." Name: Mac Lee Green Nationality: Canadian From: Toronto, Canada Age: 28 Height: 6'0'' Weight: 218lbs Reach: 76'' Nickname: “The Ultimate Psycho” Strength: (29) Speed: (34) Stamina: (29) Determination: (34) Movement: (34) Trainer's Comments: "Green is Canada's sharpest fighter. This guy has built his reputation on his no-nonsense, get the job done, boxing style. You won't get any surprises from this guy. He uses a head-on approach. If he can get on the inside and dig away, he will. Dance around him and use your jab, then try straight rights and big hooks to demoralise." Name: Buddy Shaw Nationality: American From: Catskill Mountains, New York Age: 24 Height: 6'3'' Weight: 215lbs Reach: 84'' Nickname: “The Dancing Assassin” Strength: (17) Speed: (45) Stamina: (20) Determination: (30) Movement: (48) Trainer's Comments: "Buddy is a lean, mean, fighting machine. He has an exceptional reach and a stinging jab, making him a tough target to hit. He also loves to frustrate his opponents. Buddy has great hand speed and can blind his opponents with lightning quick flurries. To get the edge on him try to dodge or get round the side of his jab, then hook and uppercut to his body." Name: Billy Snow Nationality: British From: Newcastle, England Age: 29 Height: 6'1'' Weight: 224lbs Reach: 75'' Nickname: “The Iceman” Strength: (36) Speed: (36) Stamina: (11) Determination: (42) Movement: (35) Trainer's Comments: "European Heavyweight Champion, Billy Snow has been in the ring with the best, and beaten most of them with his aggressive never-say-die tactics. Snow has the heart of a lion and the strength of an ox, but lacks self-discipline and can let his temper get the better of him in the heat of the moment. Pester him with combos until his guard drops then open up with all you've got." Name: Big Yank Ball Nationality: American From: Bangor, Maine Age: 33 Height: 6'4'' Weight: 248lbs Reach: 84'' Nickname: “The Sergeant” Strength: (48) Speed: (8) Stamina: (48) Determination: (15) Movement: (41) Trainer's Comments: "Big Yank is a goliath of a boxer and as tough as they come. His punch strength and dirty tactics are unrivalled. The Sergeant is so strong he could probably knock out most of his opponents with just one haymaker punch. Thankfully his speed isn't too good, so when you see one of his hooks coming, duck or block, attack, then step out of range." Name: Joe Chan Nationality: Chinese From: Chengdu, China Age: 22 Height: 5'10'' Weight: 191lbs Reach: 74'' Nickname: “The Eastern Dragon - Quick fists Joe Chan” Strength: (10) Speed: (45) Stamina: (35) Determination: (25) Movement: (45) Trainer's Comments: "Although Chan is a small heavyweight, what he lacks in power he makes up for with guts, heart and an excellent boxing brain. He's a tricky fighter! Chan can hit and move with great pace, so tagging this guy can be extremely difficult. Try to disrupt his rhythm whenever you can. Go for lots of quick combos and throw a super-punch if he's stunned." Name: Vito Soto Nationality: Colombian From: Cartagena, Colombia Age: 27 Height: 6'1'' Weight: 217lbs Reach: 78'' Nickname: “The Head-hunter” Strength: (22) Speed: (35) Stamina: (35) Determination: (35) Movement: (33) Trainer's Comments: "Vito Soto has been the Pan-American Heavyweight champ for the last 4 years. He has all the tools of a great boxer and vast experience, so watch your step! There's not much to tell on this guy - he's a smart fighter who can handle just about any situation in the ring. Recently Soto's confidence has grown, with this his training and fitness has suffered. Looks like he may run out of steam in later rounds." Name: Big Chuck Smith Nationality: Irish From: Galway, Ireland Age: 25 Height: 6'4'' Weight: 243lbs Reach: 83'' Nickname: “Hands Of Stone” Strength: (43) Speed: (14) Stamina: (34) Determination: (42) Movement: (27) Trainer's Comments: "Big Chuck is a formidable fighter and relatively quick for his size. He has explosive power in both fists, and can mix it up when the going gets rough. Big Chuck is tough and has a rock-hard chin. He can dish out punishment for 15 rounds without breaking a sweat, however he ain't too bright and wastes punches, costing him vital energy. Pop jabs in his face early on, then mid-fight switch to big hits and take him down." Name: Burt Judge Nationality: American From: San Diego, California Age: 36 Height: 6'3'' Weight: 277lbs Reach: 81'' Nickname: “The Big Cat” Strength (48) Speed (28) Stamina (19) Determination (35) Movement (30) Trainer's Comments: "Burt Judge is a BIG boxer who strikes fear in all his opponents. This hulk of a man has been taught by the best and uses his size and power to crush any boxer who stands in his way. In the early rounds you should try and stay out of range of Judge's bombs. Stick and move, wearing him down with jabs, then when he starts to slow hit him with uppercuts. Even when he is looking worn out, watch for a stray haymaker, because it could still floor you." Name: Joe Czak Nationality: Mexican From: Monterrey, Mexico Age: 31 Height: 6'1'' Weight: 218lbs Reach: 78'' Nickname: “The Mexican Whirlwind” Strength: (24) Speed: (40) Stamina: (29) Determination: (30) Movement: (37) Trainer's Comments: "The Mexican Whirlwind, Joe Czak, is a hard hitting brawler with an unorthodox fight style. He uses short punches to great effect and can take a good shot too. Czak is at the top of his game and has gone the distance with all ranked contenders. His punches sting, but lack crucial KO power. What he lacks in punch strength he makes up for in endurance, so take your time and wear this guy down." Name: Kofi Langton Nationality: Congan From: The Democratic Republic Of Congo Age: 23 Height: 5'11'' Weight: 195lbs" Reach: 76'' Nickname: “Brawling Kofi Langton” Strength: (8) Speed: (50) Stamina: (40) Determination: (12) Movement: (50) Trainer's Comments: "Stay alert at all times when in the ring with Kofi, he has outstanding hand speed and can mesmerize with his cat-like quickness. Don't blink or lose your concentration when fighting Kofi. The best tactic is to go for the kill early on and nullify his speed by dodging or blocking, then step in and throw powerful shots to his head and body." Name: Tim Simms Nationality: Australian From: Melbourne, Australia Age: 28 Height: 6'0'' Weight: 221lbs Reach: 78'' Nickname: Tim “Bushwhacker” Simms Strength: (39) Speed: (36) Stamina: (35) Determination: (29) Movement: (21) Trainer's Comments: "Tim Simms has been inactive for some time due to injury, but is fighting his way back to the top. When fit this guy can really turn on the heat, using his squat heavy frame to throw massive jaw-breaking punches. Simms has an uncanny recovery rate, just when you think you've nailed him he seems to just shake it off and get back into the fight. However, he's not been training as intensively in recent months, making him a little weaker, so use this info to beat up on him before he beats you." Name: Union Cane Nationality: American From: New Jersey Age: 32 Height: 6'2'' Weight: 218lbs Reach: 82'' Nickname: “America’s hottest fighter“ Strength: (25) Speed: (42) Stamina: (39) Determination: (19) Movement: (35) Trainer's Comments: "Union Cane is a gifted boxer with speed and power, he's a good all-rounder. So don't take anything for granted with this guy. Cane is as sharp as a razor and extremely fit. He takes all his seriously, studying their boxing style before each fight. Mix it up with Cane, keep him on his toes using jabs, then switch to hooks and uppercuts and switch again. Remember to stay alert!" Name: The Rocky Statue Nationality: Made in USA From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 5 Height: 5'11'' Weight: 1200lbs Reach: 74'' Nickname: n/a Strength: (40) Speed: (24) Stamina: (32) Determination: (40) Movement: (24) Trainer's Comments: "The Rocky statue, presented to Balboa by the good people of Philadelphia. Cast in solid bronze, he's gonna be a hard opponent to beat. This is a boxer who will quite literally test your mettle. The statue's fists weigh around 80lbs each, so you really have to make sure his gloves don't connect - otherwise you'll end up kissing the canvas." Name: Mickey Goldmill Nationality: American From: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Age: 72 Height: 5'8'' Weight: 135lbs Reach: 68'' Nickname: “Mighty Mick Goldmill” Strength: (15) Speed: (35) Stamina: (16) Determination: (49) Movement: (45) Trainer's Comments: "Mickey's getting on now, but has trained daily for the last 60 years. He can still punch a bit and has a few boxing tricks up his sleeve. Mighty Mick ain't quite the athlete he used to be, but he has immense boxing experience. This guy is tricky - he likes to play possom, luring his opponents into a false sense of security before unleashing fearsome combos with deadly accuracy." 5. GAMEPLAY TIPS Punching The Jab The jab is the most important punch in the book because it uses the shortest distance between yourself and the opponent. It can be used as a form of attack or defence and once you have mastered the jab, you can control a fight. The weaker boxers tend to be the quicker ones. The likes of Buddy Shaw and Kofi Langton don’t throw big punches but their speed allows them to move in, fire off a volley of jabs and get out quick. The jab won’t lead to knockdowns but if your punch-power is low it’s a sure fire way to gain a points decision. The Straight The straight is used as a form of attack, but it can also be used as a counter to stop your opponent coming forward. It can also be used as a power punch to take control of the fight. Used in conjunction with the jab the straight is an ideal punch to wear your opponent down. It does offer more clout than the jab but is noticeably slower to throw. The straight is also a useful punch to use if you’re in trouble. Timed correctly a couple of straights could save you from a real beating. The Hook The hook is an extremely powerful punch, thrown with a bent arm. The hook is most effective at close to medium range using the boxer’s full body rotation to deliver a K.O. power punch. You need to get in close to use hooks effectively. Combine head and body hooks to really damage your opponent. Make sure you mix your hooks as throwing the same punch will result in your opponent side-stepping your blows and letting fly with his own shots. The Uppercut The uppercut is an explosive short range punch. You bring the uppercut up and underneath your opponent’s jaw, who can’t see it coming. On impact it sends their head flying backward, dazing them or even knocking them out. The uppercut is a devastating punch that’s best delivered at the end of a flurry of punches. Get in close, throw a few of hooks to the head and body, let fly with a couple of uppercuts and watch your opponent’s health bar drop. A word of warning, leave yourself open when you throw uppercuts. Super Punches Each boxer has two super punches at their disposal. These punches are truly devastating and can lead to you flooring your opponent in one. As super punches are so powerful, they tend to take a little longer to throw. Timing is essential, get it wrong and you leave yourself open to a counter attack. Be warned, super punches cost a great deal of energy to attempt. Use your super punches wisely and they will give you the edge at any point in a fight. You should also be aware of the amount of damage that a super punch does (see the super punch section of this guide), some boxers throw devastating double super punches while others throw fast super punches that do less damage. Defending Block Use your block to defend against incoming punches. The block will automatically determine whether the incoming punch is heading for the head or body and react accordingly. Your block efficiency will decrease each time you successfully block a punch, usually you can get away with three to five blocks. Once a punch gets through your defence you should quickly drop your guard to reset your blocking efficiency. Dodge (Bob, Weave, Lean back and Duck) Use dodges to stay within fight range and make your opponent miss. Try using a dodge if your block is weakened, or even better use a dodge then throw a counterpunch from the defensive position. This technique can be deadly if timed correctly and it really irritates your opponent which may lead to them making a rash move that you can quickly step in and punish. Evasive Dodge Evasive dodges should be used when you want to get away from your opponent as quickly as possible. As soon as you start taking a beating use the evasive dodge. Don’t stand there and try to block your opponent. Get out quick, recompose yourself and get back on the offensive. A good place to use evasive dodges is when cornered, quickly tap the buttons and spin round your opponent, a practiced player can swap from being cornered to cornering their opponent and then begin to dish out the punishment. Taunting Don’t forget to use your taunt. It could be the difference between title glory and a life of kissing canvas. After getting knocked down make sure the first thing you do is taunt your opponent. Not only does it make them mad, it also replenishes some of your health and punch power. However, it’s imperative that you taunt your opponent immediately. Should your assailant hit you while you’re taunting you’ll get dazed leaving yourself open to a super punch. Another clever use of the taunt is press the button just as you’ve dazed your opponents. You should have just enough time to regain precious heath and punch power. General Tips * Stay away from the corners as much as possible. * Vary your fight distance swap between outfighting (far) and infighting (close). * Use jabs and straights for outfighting and hooks and uppercuts for infighting. * Use your jab to find your range. * Keep an eye on your punch strength, don’t waste your punches. * Use powerful combinations to stun your opponent, and then finish him with a super punch. * Use taunts to regain health and punch power. * Keep moving! Make yourself difficult to hit at all times. * Learn to counterpunch – dodge and hit. * Don’t punch yourself out too early unless you plan to go the distance and win on points. * Know your boxer’s strengths and weaknesses and play to them. * Don’t forget to use classic quotes from the film, it all adds to the atmosphere. 8.
