Sega GT 2002 is a great racer, and anyone who is remotely interested in simulation racing and owns an X-Box should definitely pick this up. Considering its FREE, there's nothing to lose to see if you like it. I can't say I wanted to write a guide for this. But considering the summer months are crappy for new games (thank god), I noticed I hadn't taken advantage of my two free games. I put in Sega GT 2002, and I was surprised on the amount of detail in the game. The numbers of cars rank up there with other racers (granted, there's like 10 WRXs and NSXs) to keep playing for quite some time. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * t a b l e o f c o n t e n t s * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 1. updates 2. game overview 3. starting out 4. official race walkthrough 5. license tests 6. prize list 7. driving techniques 8. parts 9. car manufacturers 10. car list 11. courses 12. frequency asked questions 13. thanks and disclaimer ========================================================================= 1) UPDATES ========================================================================= Version 0.5 (May 9, 2003) - Cleaned up everything. - Updated most sections. - Michael Mattai is my new god. In this mode, you're given a a small amount of money to purchase a car, and start racing; rack up dough through event races, and earn licenses to increase the amount of money races reward you with. Involves two seasons, with the second being significantly harder. Full of awfully long loading times, it's hard to move around here without being totally annoyed. Quick Battle Basically a racing game's version of a sport's game 'exhibition.' Choose from most of the game's cars, and race on any of the courses. Can choose from Single Race, Dual Race, or CPU Race. Below are the list of cars available in this mode. Maker Make --------------------------------------------------------- Alfa Romeo 145 155 T.Spark Giulia Sprint GTA Audi S3 Quattro Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Fiat Barchetta Giovane Due Coupe 20V Turbo Honda NSX Type S Zero NSX-R '92 Civic Type R '98 S600 Lexus IS 300 5-Speed Mazda RX-7 Type RS (IV) Efini RX-7 Type R (I) Savanna RX-7 Infini (FC) Savanna RX-7 GT Turbo Savanna RX-3 Mercedes-Benz E500 190E 2.5-16 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Markinen Edition Lancer GSR Evolution IV Lancer GSR Evolution III Lancer GSR Evolution II Lancer GSR Evolution Lancer GSR IC Turbo Starion GSR-VR Nissan Skyline GT-R (KPGC10 240Z Opel Speedster Peugeot 406 Sedan 3.0 V6 SE 307 2.0 Renault A110 Subaru Imprezza WRX STi Version IV Imprezza WRX STi Version III Imprezza WRX STi Version II Imprezza WRX STi Version Alcyone SVX Alcyone VR Turbo Toyota Celica XX 2000GT Celica 1600GT Levin TE27 Sports 800 MR2 AW11 MR2 SW20 Chronicle Mode Allow you to race against 70s and early 1980s cars. Pick a car from the available list, then race! If you place in the top 3, you earn points, which allow you to upgrade your car. After you've won a number of races, you'll be able to complete a 'bingo' type screen that awards you cars as you fill the columns and rows. Time Attack An excellent mode to test your skills on certain tracks. You can select one of your cars from your garage to practice, luckily. You may also race against a 'ghost.' This is based on a previously saved replay. If you're 'in' to getting the best time possible, this is your main game ;). Replay Mode Watch your replays over and over again. I never personally did this as the replays are pretty ugly looking, but if you ever came back from 6th to 1st in the final lap, this is where you can show it your mad skillz off. Can take snapshots as well as edit your replays. ========================================================================= 3) STARTING OUT ========================================================================= The following section describes the main game, which is basically a simulation mode similar to Gran Turismos. Along with explanations of everything, I'm also including hints and tips to get you through the game. For the most part, this is simply a nice tutorial for the main Sega GT 2002 mode. Below is an description of each mode in the simulation game. [ Official Race ] ------------------------------------------- The Official Race is the main 'storyline' of Sega GT. Meaning, you need to complete this to get further in the game, and into Season 2. This mode is set up in multiple stages, with three different races each. Each race rewards you with different things; check the OFFICIAL RACE section of this guide to see what the rewards are for winning each race. When you successfully place in the top 3 of each race, you will be given access to the License Test. Each test has to be completed under certain requirements; when you do it, you are allowed to move on to the next stage. Unlike other simulation games, I found the license tests to see fairly easy, up to the last two. Those do require some use of your mad skillz, and can be quite frustrating. Which is why I've added a separate section just for that! Once you receive the SS License, you will end the first reason of gameplay, and move onto the second. The second season involves higher cash-outs, but a much higher difficulty. This is where you get a majority of the 'hidden' cars in the game, as well as the better upgrades in the game (like stage 4's). [ Event Races ] --------------------------------------------- Event races are nothing but extra races to raise your funds. Every now and than one will reward you with a new car, but for the most part, we do this simply for the winning prize: cash! There are a total of 15 event races. For the most part, you will only be able to complete roughly 10 of them, as certain races have restrictions. For example, the Battle of 70s race obviously only allows cars from the 1970s. Payouts range from $3000-4000 with no license to around $16,000 with an SS license in Season two. You want to do these so that you don't increase the difficulty of the competition by going through the official race portion of the game, but you still get money for racing. [ My Garage ] ----------------------------------------------- In my garage, you can do a number of things with your game. This is the only place where you can switch cars, as well as changing parts (like tires). Also, when you sell your car, I recommend selling it for much higher then the starting value. Well, not super high, but double the amount unless you absolutely need the money immediately. Someone will always buy it. Always. And in my opinion, the test run is worthless. [ Car Shop ] ------------------------------------------------ Sega GT 2002's many cars are available here to buy. Because of its slow loading times, I suggest using the car list I've provided in this guide to look through each car. [ Parts Shop ] ---------------------------------------------- Purchase parts to upgrade your new car here. Refer to the PARTS SHOP section of this guide for more details. [ Used Parts Shop ] ----------------------------------------- Purchase parts to upgrade your used car here. Refer to the PARTS SHOP section of this guide for more details. ========================================================================= 4) OFFICIAL RACE WALKTHROUGH ========================================================================= You're forced into the world of Sega GT with a mighty $13,000. From the STARTING OFF section, you've already decided what your car is going to be. Personally, I chose the Peugeot 206 2.0 S16, as it has the best specs for a car at or under $13,000. You could definitely have bought a cheaper car, which is the beauty of games like these; there's no real answer. But the 206 at stock can get you through the Stage 1 of Season one with no upgrade necessary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Season One ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Stage 1 ----------------------------------------- Go through Stage 1, and sell off whatever cars you win. Go into some of the event races and earn 6,000 per race (assuming you don't get any damage). This leaves you with a tidy sum to purchase a new car. Yes, while it IS your first car, it's definitely something we don't really want. While upgrading your car sounds nice, we definitely need something thats on a higher level then most cars in Season one. Get through the rest of the official races (Stage 2.2 rewards you with the Cosmo Sport, something you could definitely sell for well over $10,000) go into the C License test. Why? After receiving it, the payouts for each race increases. Granted competition gets harder as well, but do you really want to do the non-license races with a top payout at only $4000. It only requires a little amount spent on upgrades to get your car going. The 206 had an easy time winning on non-straight courses. Obviously the car is already out-matched to begin with, so courses with a lot of straightaways should be avoided if you following this strategy. You could also stay with the non-license event tests, and win the races easily. If you can do them without damaging yourself (tough with those kraaazy A.I. drivers), your payout is increased by 50% - so you can earn just as much as if you had the C License (and no, it's downright impossible to go damage-free with an underpowered car). Continue winning until you get around the $40,000 range. A couple of horsepower upgrades are necessary at this point. It's easy to win stock, but gaining an extra $2,000 is well worth the few thousand it takes to power your car to a competitive level. There are a number of cars to choose from, but I'm a big fan of the Elise from Lotus. The tiny MR car can out-handle anything in season one, and its got some power to boot. The WRX and Lancer Evolutions are great cars as well, but a little too cookie-cutter as well. Audi's TT is a great car too. You can't truly go wrong with any of the above cars; plus there's more I didn't mention. Take a look at the car list, and look to see something that interests you. There is no 'right' answer for this. With your new car, win the C License, and move on to Stage 2. -- Stage 2 ----------------------------------------- With your new car, you should be blowing away the competition. Even a fairly crappy driver could take a Impreza WRX Sti and own this game like nobody's business. So I'm not going to go too indepth like I did early in the game. But instead, lets go into upgrading your new car. Power is nice, but it's not an issue on most tracks. Brakes, tires, and suspension are the first things you want to grab on. Why? Tires and suspension will add to an already great handling car (Elise 0wnz!!11), and upgraded brakes will add another dimension to your driving. I definitely recommend hitting a curvy course with normal brakes, then upgrade them. See a difference? You better believe it. The Stage 2 races offer you two cars and a new suspension upgrade. With your new car, you should have absolutely no problem. If you do, its likely you need to practice; any car you picked should have no problem winning at this part of the game. On the subject of the two winning cars you receive. They aren't anything special, but they may be comparable to your car. I see no reason why you would want to switch cars after just picking one, but do what you please. Unless you want to collect every single car, I suggest putting these guys on the selling block. -- Stage 3 ----------------------------------------- With whatever car you chose, these are as easy as possible. Continually upgrade it. Start from the priority list from the PARTS SHOP section of the guide. But ultimately, buy what you think you need. Everyone is a different driver. The official races here are all the same 3 lap runs from the previous stage (with obviously new tracks). You should be fairly familiar with the road now so this stage should be no problem. And remember, there's only about five or six tracks, but they have different routes. That means no matter what you should recognize at least a little of each track. Now that's sweet. By the time you're ready for the A License, you should have you car fairly loaded; suspension, tires, and brakes should have been the first things to buy. Weight reduction should be at level 3, and you should already have most of the upgrades that drastically increase your engine's power. The only thing left maybe some of the more expensive stuff, like the Port and Polish or the tuned ROM. -- Stage 4 & Stage 5 --------------------------------- Two stages at once? You're crazy?! Considering the 'easiness' to these stages, what else can I do? Seriously, your car should be upgraded to near ownage. That means that each race should be done by the first turn. The rest of the level is simply meant for you to practice your 1337 skillz. Unfortunately, these races are 4 to 5 laps, meaning they take forever, even with the fast car you own. I recommend just going through them as fast as possible, and getting it over with. We need to get to Season two before we earn enough money to afford the nicer cars (and to win them in races!) The Stage 4 License test uses the Tommi Lancer, while Stage 5 uses the Jaguar E-Type. Both oversteer like no one's business. The Lancer can be tamed fairly easy, and you should have no problem getting the S License. The E-Type on the other hand, sucks some serious butt. It's near impossible to drive in stock form. I suggest getting used to drafting, and use the walls to help out (remember, a small tap against the wall doesn't decrease your speed too much, and it only lowers the disqualify gauge by maybe one square. It isn't too hard where you'll be trying it over and over again; any decent driver should get it on his/her? first couple tries. -- Stage 6 ----------------------------------------- I was a little shocked on how competitive this race was. Still, if you've made it this far, this race should be easy. If you're still having trouble winning races, I recommend just stop playing. Seriously, if you haven't gotten it now, you're not going to 'get' it later with much harder competition. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Season Two ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not going to write an indepth walkthrough for season two. There's not much else left to do; there's some more cars and parts to earn, and that's about it. But to helps things, here's the important official races to go through. Autumn King Battle Super Racing Tires now available Eagle Flight Stage 4 Weight Reduction now available Ironside International Super Racing Intercooler now available Raging Typhoon Original Tuned Suspension now available Rampart Cup Super Racing Brakes now available As you can see, there are no new cars available through the 'main' part of the game. I recommend getting these first, as they will drastically increase your chance of winning the event races. So what's left once you have all these upgrades? Go through the event races to earn some money. If you don't care for a certain car you've earned throughout the game, sell it! When you buy a new car, make sure you save before to make sure it's actually a good car worth purchasing. Lastly, 'beat' the game by going through the World Tournament. ========================================================================= 5) LICENSE TESTS ========================================================================= There are five license tests that you must conquer in the first season of Sega GT mode. They are used as tests to see if you're able to move on to the next stage. You start off with no license, and you move through C, B, A, S, and finally SS. At this point, you are moved to the second season of the game, and you no longer have to worry about the dreaded license tests. But, you wouldn't be here if you already had the SS License under your belt. I don't want to include a turn-by-turn walkthrough for each test. That doesn't work, and is filler in this writer's opinion. But general tips can be absolutely wonderful. A sentence changed by perspective when braking, so I hope I'll say something that can get you past these darn tests. To begin with, the tests get harder as you go on. They start off so easy in fact, that I think its safe to assume you're stuck on the A, S, or SS License. The likelihood is you've made it all the way to the end, and you're stuck with that damn Jaguar. The first tests.... ------------------- I want to put the first three tests in one group because they're all so damn easy. It's unnecessary to drive differently then what you have been with your original, puny car. The time limit is fairly loose, and you should have no problem going through these. The 206 2.0 S16 is the most balanced car in all five of the license tests. It's power/weight ratio is excellent, so those turns you take won't be too tough. It's acceleration isn't the greatest in the world, but on the track you're on, you're absolutely fine. Overall, this short course has some ordinary turns. If there's one thing I should point out, it's the turn right after you go through the city. You're able to gain a decent amount of speed here, and the turn comes fast. You'll likely completely go off track, or brake waaaay to early and lose time. It's not enough for you to lose the race, but you'll likely end with only a second to spare. The following license test, B, uses the Integra Type R. Much like the 206, I found this car to be fairly easy to drive. Although the license test takes place on a rather twisty course, you should have no problem. Keep off from slamming on the brakes, and slowly go into each turn. Remember, we're just trying to beat the required time; if you're aiming for the top rank, there's nothing I can say to help you go through. But to simply get through the test, my best advice is to slowly go into turns. The Mustang GT390 is used for the A license test. I don't like the car very much, as it drives fairly slow; but it does handle decently, which is what we're going to need to get through this mess. Althrough the course pretty much has straight-a-ways, the key is the turns. If you mess them up, you're screwed. Like with the Integra, take these turns slowly! You should approach every single one at a fairly high speed, so brake early and straight. You don't brake as you turn in! The S License Test ------------------ The Tommi Makinen Lancer Evolution is your next car you'll need to master. Since we're approaching the final license test, these tests get hard, which is why I want to go a bit more in-depth than I have been. The Lancer naturally slides easily, which is strange since it's an 4WD car. But it surprisingly is tough to get around corners unless you take your time. As usual, brake early into your turns. Keep off the acceleration as you turn (if you're doing everything right, you should spin out / over steer if you try to accelerate) and wait until you're straighten up again before you press the gas. The key is succesfully doing this is the acceleration; you will spin out of control of you abuse it. Of course, the test isn't too hard to begin with, so there's some room of error. I suggest you don't worry about getting a good time and just get this done. The next test is a real pain in the butt... The SS License Test ------------------- The Jaguar E-Type is not your friend. Rather, its your evil nemesis. I hate this car with a passion. And if you're looking here, you probably share my thoughts on the matter. The darn thing slides on any sort of turn, which means you'll be struggling on every turn as each slide takes away from that precious exit speed. I hate to recommend bending the rules, but I found using the Slide/Gauge meter to its limit lowers the difficulty a bit on this. Yeah, I know, running into walls isn't exactly expert driving, but it saves a huge amount of time to where we can afford to slide a bit. Drifting sort of works, but my knowledge of the technique isn't very good; I do know it requires some bad use of the acceleration button ;) Other than the above, I can only offer the same strategies that I've been giving in this whole guide. Brake BEFORE you turn, not WHILE you're turning. Keep off the acceleration until after you're done turning, etc. You can also turn off TCS, which prevents the game from 'taking over' the car. If you're a decent driver, this means you should be able to improve your times across corners. Unfortunately, if you drive automatic, it doesn't work too well. You are VERY prone to slide on an automatic transmission, and with TCS off, this slide will lower the Gauge on the right. This means that you can end a test real fast; even on one single spin out on a corner. From what I've been reading on the GameFAQs messageboards though is that taking off TCS will help, and that its worth it see it helps through your struggle. Just for the record, I kept TCS on. ========================================================================= 6) PRIZE LIST ========================================================================= A note for the event races. Winning the special prize is a strange feat. You must fall to the back of the group through the first lap, then move up three places in the final lap. Fortunately, you don't have to actually win the race. You merely have to move up three places. So, 6th to 3rd, 5th to 2nd, and 4th to 1st. Remember, you need to be in the back three spots as you move onto the final lap (the second lap). Lastly, on the Sega DRAG Race, you just have to win the whole thing three times in a row. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Season One ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stage 1 =========================================================== Speed Ring 2002 nothing Tide Street Battle Win Mazda Cosmo Sport Rampart Cup nothing Complete one race Lotus Elan Sr.1 now available Complete all 3 races Nissan Z432R now available Stage 2 =========================================================== Spirit Hawk Cup Win Fiat 1000TCR Berline Corsa Imperial Garden 2002 Racing Suspension now available Desert Heat Cup Win Fiat Abarth 131 Rally Complete two races Skyline 2000 GT-R now available Stage 3 =========================================================== Emerald Challenge Win Skyline GT-R Racing Ed. Since every car is different, depending on what your driving is going to greatly influence how to take the turn that's coming up. I can give some maps to help you out. But the best driving technique is to practice, practice, practice; in that order. By the end of Season one, unless your braindead when it comes to racing games, you should be damn decent at this. Note: Order of position is from a, b, and so on. If there's anything else on the map, read the comments. [ Braking ] ------------------------------------------------- The most important aspect of driving is also the hardest to learn, and even harder to get good at. I'm not some sort of brake-master, but I think I'm decent at it. Which is more then most people ;) The biggest problem I see is people brake waaaay to late. As in, they brake as they're turning. Not good. I can't say I learned how to brake on my own. From JCulbert's GT2 guide, he describes how to brake: "Braking really should not be used TO corner, rather to slow heading INTO the corner." I was never really good at Gran Turismo, so when I read these words, it drastically improved the way I drive. The key to braking is to do it well before most think to do it. Another thing to note is that simply slamming on the brakes ain't going to cut it. Of course it drastically depends on the speed you're going at, so practice is the key to find out how hard you need to use your brakes. If you're constantly going out of control when you're using them, you're braking too hard, too late. Start by braking earlier, and see if this improves anything. If it doesn't, take advantage of the Xbox's analog buttons, and slightly press down the brake button, then harder as you slow down to the speed you need to take the turn. That should help a bit more. [ Acceleration in Turns ] ----------------------------------- I felt this deserved a little section in here, as its hardly a subject you hear much in messageboards (or in most FAQs even). I'm not even very good at this technique, and I probably have the whole concept completely wrong. I'd hope someone who knows what their talking about can please speak up if I'm giving everyone bad advice. When you approach a turn, you're obviously supposed to brake to the highest possible speed that your car is capable of keeping enough traction to turn. This means as you begin to turn, you're technically going as fast as possible. So what does this mean? You want to lay off the gas until well into the turn. I'm not positive exactly where you should begin acceleration, so I'll draw up a small diagram. /------------------\ / \ / \ | __c__ | | b / \ | | / \ | | | | d | |a | | | | | | | | | | | | | | E| We will use the 180 degree hairpin as an example. A lowercase letter means you should not be accelerating. As you can see, there's no reason to accelerate through most of the turn. You are at the highest speed possible to take this turn. Any more acceleration will cause the wheels to spin, and you'll likely lose tons of your exit speed. So, turn in as normal, and accelerate as you straighten out of the corner. [ Basic 90 Degree Corner ] ---------------------------------- |--------------------- | c | | /---------- | b/ | / | | | | |a | | | Comments: As you can see, the key is to get the biggest turn possible through the apex of the corner. This not only means less braking, but it should give you an exit speed (your speed out of the corner) much higher then the dumb A.I. (and most of your friends). [ 180 Degree Hairpin ] -------------------------------------- Comments: As common as regular 90 degree corners really. While at first very intimidating, these aren't too hard to tame; at least, no harder to tame corners. /------------------\ / \ / \ | __b__ | | / \ | | / \ | | | | |(D) |a | | | | | | | | | | | | | | c| Comments: Again, you want to get away as far as possible from the inner edge to get the largest angle possible here. Especially for a hairpin, where things can go easily wrong. Following a normal brake period, turn in and nail that apex. If you missed it, or hit it too early, you'll immediately know. At this point, if you car understeers, this is where you're going to find out anyway. If you haven't fixed it through your suspension, you're likely to head right where (D) is. Make full use of the track to get the highest possible exit speed. [ Shallow S - Turn ] ---------------------------------------- \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \a \ \ | | | | | | b | | | | \ \ c\ \ \__________ \ \ \____________d_ Comments: On an S-Turn that's fairly shallow, you're able to significantly cut on lost time due to braking. As you approach the first turn, just cut right through the apex in a straight line. Now, depending on the second turn, you may have to brake and turn. This map shows this situation. But if the second turn is as shallow as the first, you should be able to go straight through without braking. If I were to drift, this is where I'd go it. [ Normal S - Turn ] ----------------------------------------- _________ a \ \ \ ______ \ \b \ \ | | | | | | c | | | | \ \ d\ \ \__________ \ \ \____________e_ Comments: You should have noticed the straight line through this map. That's basically the route you'll want to take. Brake, turn in, straighten across c, brake, then finish off the S turn. These guys are the simpliest turns to take in my opinion because there's plenty of room for error. Granted, your exit speed will drop depending on how much of that error you use, but the A.I. is very slow around these turns. ========================================================================= 8) PARTS ========================================================================= Parts can be purchased from either the Parts Shop or the Used Parts Shop. If your car is old, you can only buy used. If its new, you can only buy from the Parts Shop. Nonetheless, they are basically the same thing. For the most part, I'm not going to explain what each part does. There are already a couple of guides that explain each part fairly well, and there's nothing much left for me to do. And seriously, everything minus suspension just adds better handling, or more power. Do I really need to explain to you what the muffler does? But, it's definitely worth going through your planned upgrade path. The most important thing to do to your car is to improve your handling. Why? Most courses rarely have straight-a-ways long enough to take advantage of the insane power you can have with power upgrades. Secondly, what's the point of power if you're always running into walls? Plus, since the A.I. usually has the power advantage anyway, you'll be able to burn them on the turns. In that case, Tires, Suspension, and Brakes are most haves as your first upgrades. If you feel your car is handling well enough (if you have a Lotus, for example), I'd get tires and wait on the rest. After you've messed around with your car's handing, you'll want to improve your acceleration. Weight Reduction as your answer; get it up to Stage 3 immediately, then to Stage 4 when you get it in Season two. At this point of your upgrading career, the only thing left is to up your power. The Turbo or NA upgrades are your best bet; they give a huge amount of horsepower for not so much. The Tuned ROM and Port and Polish upgrades should be left. They do give a decent amount of horsepower depending on what car you've driving, but they're cost drive their importance down. Get the low $ / high hp increase upgrades first before you get these guys. The muffler is a very cheap way to get a 20-30 horsepower increase. Suspension ---------- A note on suspension. Stiffer springs (an increase on the gauge) creates a more responsive ride. For example, increase the front suspension if your car tends to understeer (not turning when your wheels are turned). To the opposite if you're oversteering. The Jaguar E-Type is a great example of this. I would decrease it's suspension in the back, and see how it drives then. Maybe we can make a car out of this mess. There are consequences to doing this too much. You won't be able to react very well if you go on the curb or go off-road on rough terrain. But since it's hard to do this in Sega GT 2002, I'd wouldn't worry too much about it. Camber ------ Basically this increases the amount of tire you have on the road when you turn. I see no reason why you wouldn't want this at near max as the only consequence to doing this is tire-wear. Oh boo hoo. I'll only have to spend another 5 grand after 10 races and not 20 ;) I'm seriously hurt. Although I can attest to not really noticing a difference between the default setting so whatever. It appears there is no real consequence for maxing out your camber, so just put it on max on both front and rear tires. This will drastically increase your traction, and should immediately improve your driving and lap times. Luckily, SEGA wasn't too keen on the idea of making this a 'real' simulation game ;) ========================================================================= 9) CAR MANUFACTURERS ========================================================================= Just for the record, here are the car manufacturers represented in S Sega GT 2002. Type in the name in your search mode, and you should go immediately to the car list, and the manufacturers respective cars. I added some thoughts to each manufacturers line-up. Its nothing special, but feel free to add your own! Acura: No RSX? One NSX? huh?! Someone dropped the ball when putting Acura in here. Alfa Romeo: Any opinions? I don't really drive these guys much. Audi: A nice selection, but the S3 and TT are basically the same thing in terms of car after upgrades. The Sport Quattro ain't bad though. Caterham: I never heard of Caterham before, so I tried out their car. It's nothing we haven't seen before. Chevrolet: Ah, corvettes. The Z06 is likely a fan favorite, and will be picked by a lot of people. There's more, and better cars than the Z06, but it's hard to go wrong. Dohmu: Uhhh.... Dodge: Nice offering from Dodge, but we all know we just want to use the new Viper. As always, they kick butt. Fiat: Nice small cars. Ford: A nice line-up if I say so myself. Really, all five cars are definitely worth trying throughout the game. Honda: Lots of Civics and Integras, with NSX mixed in. Honda has always been a company that has a car for anyone. Jaguar: The E-type sucks. 'nuff said. Skip Jaguar for this game. Lexus: Boooooo! Lotus: Arguably the best car company represented here in my opinion. The Elise kicks ass, and the Espirit is no slouch either. Mazda: Zoom-zoom... or not. Where's the RX-8? Mercedes-Benz: A decent showing by Mercedes. The E500 is surprisingly agile, and the others are nice cars for their price. Mitsubishi: Seriously, do we need all of these Lancers? Nissan: Mmm... Skylines. Where's the petition to get them over here? Rumor has it that Infiniti may bring some sort of Skyline over here. Melikes. Opel: Only one car, but its a small, light, MR car that handles similar to Lotus' Elise. Peugeot: The 206 is a great starting car! The rest is sort of 'bleh.' Renault: MR Hatchback? YES!!! Stradale: Any opinions? Suburu: Seriously, do we need all of these WRXs? Toyota: Okay offering, but who seriously drives a Toyota other then the Supra? ========================================================================= 10) CAR LIST ========================================================================= Below is the list of every car in the game. It's a great reference in case you are getting a new car, and you want to see multiple cars' specs to compare. Thanks to Michael Mattai for the weight of most cars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Acura - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NSX -------------------------- Displacement: 3179 cc Max Power : 289 hp Max Torque : 224.1 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1400 kg Price : 91,070 Comments : Unless I'm missing something, the NSX is simply too expensive to make it worth while, especially considering the Ford GT Concept is only at $150,00 (hint, hint, hint). Historically in simulation games, it's hard not to go wrong with the NSX. I'll assume the NSX is a great car in this game as well (although it does seem to be outclassed by the big boys). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Alfa Romeo - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alfa 147 2.0 T.Spark -------------------------- Displacement: 1970 cc Max Power : 147 hp Max Torque : 133.7 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1280 kg Price : 21,000 Comments : It's got some pep, but I'm more of a fan of Peugeot's 206. Also, $21,000 is a lot for a FF car. Alfa 145 -------------------------- Displacement: 1969 cc Max Power : 147 hp Max Torque : 137.3 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1240 kg Price : 20,500 Comments : Isn't this just an older version of the 147 above? Alfa 156 Superturismo -------------------------- Displacement: 2492 cc Max Power : 187 hp Max Torque : 164.8 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1360 kg Price : 31,000 Alfa 155 T.Spark -------------------------- Displacement: 1969 cc Max Power : 143 hp Max Torque : 137.3 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1320 kg Price : 19,800 Guila Sprint GTA -------------------------- Displacement: 1570 cc Max Power : 113 hp Max Torque : 117.1 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 845 kg Price : 40,000 Comment : Purely for collecting reasons only. Tipo 33-2 Stradale -------------------------- Displacement: 1995 cc Max Power : 226 hp Max Torque : 151.8 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 700 kg Price : 65,350 Comments : Win Stage 4.1 Dancing Horizon Cup. Fun to drive, and definitely worth it to spend an hour or two driving this. I wouldn't say its in the 'best car in the game' class, but it's definitely an interesting car, and you get it for free anyway. And worst case scenario leads to an easy $40,000 in the bank if you absolutely hate this car ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Audi ------------------------------------------------------------------------- TT Coupe -------------------------- Displacement: 1780 cc Max Power : 221 hp Max Torque : 206.7 lb-ft Drive Train : 4WD Weight : 1440 kg Price : 27,800 Comments : First off, its not 4WD, althrough the game lists it as that. It's AWD. Secondly, props to Sega for getting the TT sans spoiler. With the 1.8 liter 221 hp engine, the TT chugs along. One can't help that Audi would drop something like their 2.7T in it, but alas not for this game (although for future TT owners, they are doing something ;) ). Considering you can upgrade the hell out of it, the four-banger isn't going to slow you down much, but we would all like to see a V6. S3 quattro -------------------------- Displacement: 1780 cc Max Power : 207 hp Max Torque : 195.2 lb-ft Drive Train : 4WD Weight : 1460 kg Price : 22,200 Comments : While not as cool as the V8 S4, the small, sleek looking S3 is fun to drive. The small price tag is further evidence that this is a great car for only above 20 grand. It obviously gets outclassed by the Lancers and Imprezas $10,000 more, but its a great car for Audi fans. Sport Quattro -------------------------- Displacement: 2133 cc Max Power : 301 hp Max Torque : 258.1 lb-ft Drive Train : 4WD Weight : 1320 kg Price : 53,000 Comments : Win Stage 5.1. Should drive likt a better TT. Lots of power in stock-form, and the 4WD is always fun to drive. If you're an Audi man (or woman? lol), you should be disappointed with this old-sk00l sports sedan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Caterham - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Super Seven R500R -------------------------- Displacement: 1795 cc Max Power : 226 hp Max Torque : 154.7 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 460 kg Price : 70,000 Comments : Win Stage 5.4 Ardent World Cup ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Chevrolet - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Corvette Z06 -------------------------- Displacement: 5665 cc Max Power : 399 hp Max Torque : 384.6 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1420 kg Price : 49,000 Comments : Do I need to go in detail on this guy. If you don't know a lot about cars, you'll still likely know about the Corvette. With an egnormous about of power and torque, this car stock owns. I highly recommend considering this car for your first "real" car. IMO, it gets outclassed by the very light, MR cars, but you can't go wrong with Corvette. Corvette Sting Ray -------------------------- Displacement: 5730 cc Max Power : 458 hp Max Torque : 399.1 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1605 kg Price : 49,600 Comments : Win all four stages in Stage 3, season one. More power than the Z06, but it also weighs much more. Personally, I'd take the Z06. Camaro SS -------------------------- Displacement: 5700 cc Max Power : 324 hp Max Torque : 343.4 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1557 kg Price : 29,000 Camaro Z28 -------------------------- Displacement: 5735 cc Max Power : 329 hp Max Torque : 381.0 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1504 kg Price : 33,000 Chevelle -------------------------- Displacement: 7400 cc Max Power : 449 hp Max Torque : 498.9 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1580 kg Price : 31,500 Comments : Special Prize at the SEGA Drag Race. I believe the Chevelle can get the highest horsepower rating in the game. Above 800!!11 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Dodge - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Viper GTS-R -------------------------- Displacement: 7993 cc Max Power : 500 hp Max Torque : 499.6 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1590 kg Price : 109,000 Comments : Win Season one's World Tournament. While I've always found the Viper as boring as the Lancer Evolutions and Impreza WRXs, this guy is still a winner. 500 cubed ain't bad, no? Charger -------------------------- Displacement: 7200 cc Max Power : 424 hp Max Torque : 477.2 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1587 kg Price : 56,500 Comments : Win the Sega Drag Racing in the EVENT portion of the main game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Dohmu - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zero -------------------------- Displacement: 2800 cc Max Power : 143 hp Max Torque : 151.8 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 920 kg Price : 60,000 Comments : Win Stage 3.3 Burning Wheel Cup. While you may think you could probably tweek this into a good car, you're half right. It just can't compete with the huge power of the better supercars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Fiat - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Punto HGT Abarth -------------------------- Displacement: 1746 cc Max Power : 128 hp Max Torque : 120.7 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1100 kg Price : 11,700 Barchetta Giovane Due -------------------------- Displacement: 1746 cc Max Power : 128 hp Max Torque : 120.7 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1090 kg Price : 14,500 Coupe 20V Turbo -------------------------- Displacement: 1995 cc Max Power : 192 hp Max Torque : 218.3 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1320 kg Price : 25,000 1000TCR Berlina Corsa -------------------------- Displacement: 982 cc Max Power : 79 hp Max Torque : 65.0 lb-ft Drive Train : RR Weight : 568 kg Price : 16,000 Comments : Received after Spirit Hawk Cup in Stage 2. Like a super Go-kart. But distinguishes this from most of the game's tiny cars is this is rear engine. It's rare to drive any RR car, so its definitely something you should try out to see if you like. Unlike 4WD and even MR, it's not for everyone though. Abarth 131 Rally -------------------------- Displacement: 1995 cc Max Power : 138 hp Max Torque : 130.1 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1380 kg Price : 22,000 Comments : Win Stage 2.3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Ford - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mustang GT -------------------------- Displacement: 4600 cc Max Power : 260 hp Max Torque : 305.1 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1490 kg Price : 35,000 Mustang GT390 -------------------------- Displacement: 4600 cc Max Power : 324 hp Max Torque : 289.2 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1280 kg Price : 41,500 Comments : Win Stage 4.2 Eagle Flight. Ford GT Concept -------------------------- Displacement: 5400 cc Max Power : 499 hp Max Torque : 498.9 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1200 kg Price : 150,000 Comments : Becomes available after winning Stage 4. Quite possibly the best car in the game. Make sure you fully upgrade this sucker, as you won't get your past lap times with that list turbo upgrade ;) Ford GT -------------------------- Displacement: 4736 cc Max Power : 379 hp Max Torque : 329.7 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 900 kg Price : 200,000 Comments : Win in Stage 5.5 - Huntsmen International. Basically a lesser version of the Concept. If you're old sk00l, I'd guess you'd prefer the classic over the newer one. Ford GT90 -------------------------- Displacement: 5400 cc Max Power : 719 hp Max Torque : 659.4 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1452 kg Price : 300,000 Comments : Win battle of 90's in season two. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Honda - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NSX-R '02 -------------------------- Displacement: 3179 cc Max Power : 276 hp Max Torque : 224.1 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1270 kg Price : 118,600 Comments : Can't go wrong with Honda's NSX. Although a bit pricey, these guys belong in anyone's top car list. NSX Type-S -------------------------- Displacement: 3179 cc Max Power : 276 hp Max Torque : 224.1 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1320 kg Price : 115,570 Comments : See Above. NSX Type-S Zero -------------------------- Displacement: 3179 cc Max Power : 276 hp Max Torque : 224.1 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1350 kg Price : 98,570 Comments : See Above. NSX-R '92 -------------------------- Displacement: 2977 cc Max Power : 276 hp Max Torque : 216.9 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1239 kg Price : 104,300 Comments : See Above. Integra Type R '01 -------------------------- Displacement: 1998 cc Max Power : 216 hp Max Torque : 151.8 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1180 kg Price : 24,100 Comments : Eh, am I missing something here? This looks like Acura's RSX. Integra Type R -------------------------- Displacement: 1797 cc Max Power : 197 hp Max Torque : 137.3 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1080 kg Price : 23,580 Comments : Read above. Ah, here's the very stealable Integra we all know and love. At the price points, its not bad, but there's simply better cars available (I'd take Honda's Civic Type R over this!). If you're some sort of Integra person, go ahead and grab this though. Civic Type R '02 -------------------------- Displacement: 1998 cc Max Power : 212 hp Max Torque : 148.9 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1190 kg Price : 22,000 Civic Type R '98 -------------------------- Displacement: 1595 cc Max Power : 182 hp Max Torque : 117.8 lb-ft Drive Train : FF Weight : 1050 kg Price : 19,980 S2000 -------------------------- Displacement: 1997 cc Max Power : 246 hp Max Torque : 160.5 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1240 kg Price : 33,800 S600 -------------------------- Displacement: 606 cc Max Power : 56 hp Max Torque : 37.5 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 695 kg Price : 5,540 Comments : Go-Kart course friendly. Seriously, my lawn mower has more power than this sucker. At its cheap price it may seem tempting, but there's so much more you can get at just around 10,000 that its not even funny. I suppose you could use this at the beginning of the game; it can perform decently in the non-license tests. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Jaguar - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Type -------------------------- Displacement: 3781 cc Max Power : 264 hp Max Torque : 260.3 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1020 kg Comments : Win Super Car Battle in season two. I hate this car. Mark 2 -------------------------- Displacement: 3781 cc Max Power : 442 hp Max Torque : 468.9 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1525 kg Price : 30,000 Comments : Win Super Car Battle in season two. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Jiotto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caspita -------------------------- Displacement: 3497 cc Max Power : 449 hp Max Torque : 267.5 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1100 kg Price : 80,000 Comments : Win Super Car Battle in season two. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Lexus - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SC430 -------------------------- Displacement: 4300 cc Max Power : 299 hp Max Torque : 324.6 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1741 kg Price : 50,000 Comments : Yawn. Although if we were able to drop the top while racing, I'd give this a go any day of the week. IS300 5-Speed -------------------------- Displacement: 3000 cc Max Power : 216 hp Max Torque : 217.6 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 1476 kg Price : 38,000 Comments : Since it doesn't have the BMW 3 Series to compete against in this game, the IS 300 is a great performing car for under 40,000. Handles great stock, and has some power to get it going. But considering its unusually high weight, this car won't make the cut on most races. When even the top of the line weight reduction mod, the damn car will still weight over 1200 kg! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Lotus - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elise Type 72 -------------------------- Displacement: 1796 cc Max Power : 120 hp Max Torque : 123.6 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 710 kg Price : 26,000 Comments : Don't let the small engine fool you, this thing is a light as a feather. With suburb acceleration and handling, you should be able to out race cars with much more power than this. Unfortunately, it's simply outclassed by its better brother, the Exige. A significant increase in horsepower is well worth the extra money. Exige -------------------------- Displacement: 1796 cc Max Power : 176 hp Max Torque : 125.8 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 724 kg Price : 55,000 Comments : Go Lotus, its your birthday, go Lotus! Arguably one of the best cars in the game (at least through season one). It's smaller than heck, and the mid-engine placement makes balance and handling awesome. Worth every damn penny in my book. Espirit (2002) -------------------------- Displacement: 3506 cc Max Power : 348 hp Max Torque : 294.2 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1380 kg Price : 38,600 Comments : In my opinion, this is probably the car I'd take with 40,000 cashed in. While the Corvette is nice has a significant more power, the mid-engine set up improves handling around curves over the Vette. Espirit (1977) -------------------------- Displacement: 1937 cc Max Power : 159 hp Max Torque : 129.4 lb-ft Drive Train : MR Weight : 1066 kg Price : 23,000 Comments : Special prize in Super Car Battle in season one. Elan Sr.1 -------------------------- Displacement: 1558 cc Max Power : 104 hp Max Torque : 107.7 lb-ft Drive Train : FR Weight : 640 kg Comments : Win Stage 1.1 Speed Ring 2002. One of the better European cars in the game for under 40,000. It runs a bit heavy, and isn't the most agile of cars (is any Mercedes), but its a great car if you're a fan of Mercedes, and want to stay away from anything Japanese. All seem to include the same ol' corners and hairpins. Like any simulation game, practice is your best bet to mastering them. Considering there's only six different courses in the game, it's easy master. Granted, there's many variations in these six courses, but they all include some of the same parts. Okay, let's get started with the most simple of races, the High Speed course. High-Speed ---------- Stages: (Season One) 1.1, 4.2 (Season Two) 2.1, 5.2 I'd create a map of it myself, but I'm simply not skilled enough to do it. Plus, Tman7 has a great file on GameFAQs that shows all the courses in their variation. The High Speed course is very simple, with just three turns. Turns 1 and 3 aren't very sharp; I've been able to take them at around 175 mph in my Exige. It is a great handling car, but that leads me to believe that these turns are easy for any car to blow past full speed. The real test on this track is Turn 2. While you can still take it at a fairly high speed, you'll have to slow down. The best way to do this is to shift down a gear. This way, you don't have to rely on your braking skills to slow you down too much. I was able to take my Exige at well over 135 mph at fourth gear after I dropped it immediately from 5th. As I past the apex of the corner, I was able to shift back to 5th, and regain most of my lost speed. ========================================================================= 12) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ========================================================================= Q: How do you get the Chevelle from the SEGA Drag event? A: Win the event THREE times in a ROW. You cannot come back three positions on the final lap on this race (obviously). This is the ONLY way you can win it. - - - - - - - - - - - Q: I heard you can upgrade your car with NOS. True? A: Unfortunately yes ;) To win, lose a race on a day with a 5. (i.e. days: 5,1,15,2,25, and so on). Don't ask me exactly why, but SEGA decided this was how you're supposed to get it. On the following X6 day, go into the USED PARTS SHOP, and scroll all the way to the right. There is our ramed NOS upgrade. To use the nitrous oxide, equip it on your car. Enter the drag race (and only the drag race), and start the race like normal. When your RPM gets high enough (it appears its different for each car), a light with 'light' up on your tachnometer. When this happens, hit the handbrake (default: B button) and watch. Again, I recommend saving so that you can reset and try again. It's hard to get it right the first time, and you'll want to do it over and over again to get the best drag time EVAR. - - - - - - - - - - - Q: What's the best way to earn money fast early in the game? A: In my opinion, you should spend most of the $13,000 on your first car. For reasons I've already mentioned in the Official Race walkthrough, The Peugeot 206 is the best car for the job. Once you buy it, its fairly easy to win Event Races; spend a couple thousand on upgrading the car, and you should be able to easily win the races with no damage. That brings up your winnings to $6000 per race. It doesn't take long to reach $50,000+ so that you can buy your WRX, or Corvette, or Elise. I highly suggest never getting to Stage 2, and the competition gets increasingly harder, and you'll likely have to spend more money to compete and win. - - - - - - - - - - - More to come soon ;) ========================================================================= 13) THANKS AND DISCLAIMER ========================================================================= Credits CJAYC - For creating the coolest site on the net and hosting this FAQ.
