Complete Gaming History VIII. The End IX. And Last, But Not Least, The Credits I. Before We Begin ------------------ It's been a long time since I last updated, and this is the last update. That's right. This is the final version of the FAQ, and I must say goodbye. Keep in mind, like almost all other authors, I am not accepting anymore e-mails. I just gotta do other things. So enjoy this update, and game on. If you want a ton of info on the box, go to www.xbox.com. It's the official site from Microsoft itself. If you are having further problems, contact the company who made such a great video game system. II. Introduction To Xbox ----------------------- The Xbox is Microsoft's first video gaming system. Boasting impressive visuals, power, performance, and games, the Xbox is here to stay. It is priced around at $149.99 currently, and it is better than the Sony PS2, which is also $149.99. This is because most of the games on PS2 come out on Xbox either at the same time, or later on. It's power is only comparable to the Nintendo GameCube, which also boasts impressive performance, and is $99.99. However, the games for GameCube are ranged more toward the younger generations, while Xbox games are spread out across the genres of gaming. So if your looking for a next-generation system, you know what to choose now. III. Setting Up Your System -------------------------- After you purchase your Xbox, I bet your probably eager to start playing (games sold seperately). Well, you'll need to hook it up first. This section is here if you lost your instruction manual, which came in the box. If you have that, skip this section and refer to the manual, because it has pictures and they describe it better. (Note: This follows the procedure for the standard AV Composite Cables) Well, in the box, you should get an Xbox console, an Xbox Controller (or Controller S, it depends), and two cables. One of them should be the AV Composite Cables (the one with the colored plugs on one end and a big flattish end on the other side) and the AC Adapter Plug (the one with the two prongs and an end with two holes on the other side). First, put your Xbox on a clean, hard, flat surface. Put it there. Now, get the AV composite cables and plug in the colored ends using the color coding on the back of the TV to help you. Plug the flat end into the the big flat opening on the back of the Xbox. Plug the controller into the first cord terminal on the front of the Xbox. Plug in the two prongs into a power outlet, and the flat end with the holes into the back of the Xbox. Now, when you first power up the Xbox, you will have to set up the language and clock. Then put in a game and your ready to go! IV. Hardware ------------- Well, now we're talkin'! Here is all about the Xbox and its accessories and the tech specs. Let's roll! A. Microsoft Xbox ----------------- The Xbox is one mean, green, gaming machine. First of all, it is more powerful than the PS2 and GameCube, and it sports excellent games to go with it. It's also a sleek black case with the green XBOX logo in the middle. It has an 8GB (gigabyte) hard-drive, where you store your game information like you would on a memory card and also rip songs onto the box and listen to it while playing a game (only some games have this feature). Eight Giga-Bytes. Think about it. That's a lot of space. Actually enough that you might never need a memory card. But thankfully, if you want to transfer your game files onto another friend's Xbox, Microsoft made the Memory Unit (see below). Did you know that the Xbox also has a built in Ethernet port already? So that if you want to start playing online with no lag, just subscribe to Xbox Live and start kicking a**! Only works with DSL or cable modems though and has a monthly subscribtion fee of $9.99. Other fees may apply, but I'm not sure. Anyways, the Xbox has a custom made graphics chips that was made in cooperation with Nvidia, one of the best graphics chips manufacturers out there. It runs at 733 Mhz, the fastest in any recent console yet. The Xbox also supports good ol' Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, for you audio geeks out there (no offense). Xbox also has 4 controller ports, so there is no hassle over Multi-Taps (like the PS2). If this isn't enough to tell you about the Xbox's power, keep reading below for the technical speculations! Tech Specs-Straight from the source! Processor: Intel 733 MHz CPU Graphics: Nvidia GPU Storage: Built-in hard drive, Memory Unit (sold seperately) Multimedia: Games, CD's, DVD's Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1, 256 audio channels Ports: Four Controller, One Multisignal AV, One Power Supply, One Ethernet Online Capabilities: Broadband only (whew, I have DSL) HDTV Ready: Requires special add-on pack Dimensions: 12 x 4 x 8 inches (w\h\d, respectively) Special Notes: The Xbox is also a music manager. It can play CD's, but it can also RIP music because of the hard drive! The Xbox also has a front-loading DVD tray, just like the PS2. B. Xbox Controller ------------------ The Xbox Controller "is the result of over thousands of hours of durability testing." That's what Microsoft says on the official Xbox site. And it's true. It might be big, but boy, is it one of the most durable controllers ever! It is a nice, smooth, ergonomic shape which sports the Xbox jewel logo right in the middle. It has six main buttons on the front, with 256 levels of analog pressure. That means that if you press the button really hard, you would basically accelerate faster in a racing game or punch harder in fighting game. Cool. The buttons are all in the right places, so you don't get messed up in a good game of Halo. But then comes the two analog triggers on top. They are nice and big so you can grip them easily. Press them in all the way, and you are at the 256th level of analog pressure. Then you have the two analog thumbsticks, an eight-way directional pad, start and back buttons, and the two slots to put your accessories in. Also, you can press in the thumbsticks, just like the DualShock 2. Mix that all up with a 9.8' cord, and you an awesome controller. Tech Specs-Straight from my observations! Number of Buttons (including start, back, thumbstick buttons and, triggers): 12 Number of Analog Thumbsticks: 2 Rumble Feature: Yes Number of Accessory Slots: 2 (on top, with the triggers) Cord Length: 9.8' Special Notes: Every Xbox controller comes with an in-line release built-in. It disconnects if there is too much pressure on the cord, so there is less chance of the Xbox falling over and damaging itself and other things around it. However, there is still a chance of this happening, so play safely. C. Controller S --------------- After people complained about the Xbox Controller being too big, Microsoft, or Bill Gates (being the genius that he is), thought of the Controller S. It is much smaller, has a new arangement of buttons, and I think its cord is 9.5' now. However it is still a great controller. The four main buttons (A, B, X, Y) are in a diamond shape, like the DualShock 2. The buttons are also circular instead of ovalish. The two secondary buttons (Black, White) are underneath the main buttons. They are circular also and they are a litte lower (you'll see what I mean). The jewel logo is no longer a jewel but a plastic logo. The thumbsticks have better grips, and the start and back buttons have been located under the left analog stick. They are also lower. The controller is as comfortable and durable as ever. Tech Specs-Straight from my observations! Number of Buttons: 12 Number of Analog Thumbsticks: 2 Rumble Feature: Yes Number of Accessory Slots: 2 Cord Length: 9.5' (I think) Special Notes: Scratch the plastic logo with your finger. Yes, I just said that. Now rub the scratch with your finger. You must be thinking I'm insane, but maybe I am. Just rub the scratch. The scratch is gone! Awesome. (I'm going cuckoo today) D. Memory Unit -------------- The Xbox Memory Unit is for people who want to transfer their game files to another friend's house. Or it's for people who just dislike the hard drive. It stores 8MB (megabytes) of game information, just like the DualShock 2. However, it saves in blocks, not KB (kilobytes). They fit into the little slots on the top of your controller. They're not much bigger than the PS2 Memory Card, and are like the Sega DreamCast (it died so soon, so sad ;(, it brings a tear to my eye) VMUs (Virtual Memory Unit, I think) minus the mini-GameBoy resemblance (you know, the small screen, the little buttons). Even if all your games can fit onto your hard drive, the memory unit is still a cool accessory to have and to show your support for the Xbox. Tech Specs-Straight from my observations! Amount of Space: 8MB Where to Insert: On top of the Xbox Controller Special Notes: I don't know. It's just a memory card, after all. V. FAQ ------- Q: Why are there no release games on your hardware FAQ? A: Because when I sent this document in, the Xbox is already 2 years old. So almost everyone knows about the release games. Unless you are a complete idiot. Q: Why is this hardware FAQ so short? A: First, it's not complete. I just started it, I do plan to update it and complete it one day. Hopefully it will not be so short. Q: Is there any way to play DVDs or CDs? A: Yes, you can play CDs. However, for the DVDs, you will need a special remote that Microsoft is selling. I'm not totally sure why you need the remote, but it comes with a reciever that plugs into an Xbox Controller Terminal and a remote so you can watch DVDs. "Sent in from Miles Varalli" Apparently, the deal is that Panasonic (I believe) created the technology and owns the rights to DVD video technology. The manufacturer of any device capable of playing DVD's has to pay Panasonic an approximately $10 liscensing fee per device for the technology. To ease production costs, the XBOX cannot play DVDs out of the box. Microsoft works the liscencing fee into the $25-$30 cost of the remote and infared reciever, and that is consequently the reason that the "DVD" logo appears only on the receiver and not the console itself. "Sent in from Amad300" Q: Does the Xbox read any CD-R's? Please help. A: Seems like a lot of people like to ask this question. See for yourself at EMSOX's Xbox FAQ (on GameFAQs, of course). The Xbox can't read CD-R's, however, you might have hope. In EMSOX's FAQ, someone says that a CD-R that has been burned fully can be played on the Xbox. I tried it myself; it worked! If this doesn't work, well, let's hope that Microsoft learns from their mistakes. "Sent in from damian black" about ur repeated questions about why the xbox won't play normal cd-r's, i came across the same problem when i wanted to burn some music onto my hardrive, until i tried using a cd-rw instead. Not only does using a cd-rw work, but by leaving the cd-rw open u can just keep using the same cd-rw to transfer as much music as you would like. "Sent in from Killa Kamillac" The reason that some xbox’s can read and burn cd-r’s and some cant, is that the Xbox can have 1 of 3 dvd drives. Thompson DVD Drive- most common among older Xbox’s. also the least reliable and most problematic by far of the 3 drives. Cannot burn from CD-Rs. Philips DVD Drive- Was the standard drive starting around February 2003. Very reliable. Can burn from CD-Rs. Samsung DVD Drive- Easily the best, most reliable, and quietest DVD drive. Microsoft only recently starting using these in the Xbox systems. Cannot Burn CD-Rs. So basically while the Samsung is clearly the best for 90% gaming and 10% music, the Philips is the best for 50% gaming, 50% music. "Sent in from UndarkGoth" I have found that if you record your music onto a cd-rw (only in audio format, not mp3's ONLY AUDIO-and yes I have an older version of xbox) then, it will play, and rip the music on the cd-rw (audio format only-I tried the other way, (mp3 style-didn't work :()) Just thought anyone who has an older one would like to know about that. Also, talking to an "xbox rep" they said if you are running win xp (unfortunately I'm not running xp) and media player 9 + have a ethernet crossover cable then you can copy ur mp3's and pics onto your hardrive. "Sent in from Ravenspark" Hi! I just read through your Xbox Faq on gamefaqs... just a little feedback... You've got the 1 out of 3 possible cd drives issue mentioned twice in there, and its kidna confusing to someone who's not well verseed on the issue such as myself. The Thompson drive (which my friend had) WILL NOT read CD-R's, or CD-RW's The drive I have (which i'll check and get back to you on) will NOT read Cd-R's, but ONLY cd RW's.. The third kind of drive, (which my friend now has) can read BOTH CD-Rs, and CD-RWs) We've mangaged to figure out that first wave of X-Boxes have the Thompson drive, and that due to the high demand, microsoft had to add two other companies to to make the xbox disk drive. But the more recent XB's (thankfully) don't have the Thompson drive in them. I'll get back to you with the brands of which drive is the best, and which is the medium in about a day or two. "Sent in from Jon Grandstaff" Hey SkullDeath, I was reading your FAQ and I ran across some misinformation. It said that the Phillips DVD drive can read CD-R's and the Samsung cannot, but in actuality, it's the Phillips that can't read CD-R's and the Samsung that plays all different kinds of media. Just thought I'd give ya a heads up. "Sent in from Killa Kamillac" Ok, I need to fix what I said earlier... As far as the Thompson drive goes, it as I said CANNOT burn from CD-Rs but can burn from CD-RWs << Tested by me and confirmed, unfortunately my Thompson drive completely disabled itself after burning 2 CDs... As far as the Philips drive goes, it can burn from CD-RWs and SPECIFIC CD-Rs << Tested by me and my friend, but mostly by my friend. -I forget which specific CD-Rs it burns from, but there is at least 1 company that has CD-Rs that work for it. Now for the Samsung drive, burns all media. However, it refused to burn from the Sunlight CD-Rs. Could just be the fact sunlight isn’t a huge brand name company... This was also self tested. Reason I said it wouldn’t burn earlier is because I was only using the Sunlight CD-Rs to test, and as I said, it wont burn from them. And to Ravenspark if your friends Thompson isn’t reading CD-RWs well its just plain starting to outright malfunction, cause mine and everybody else I know who has a Thompson does. Of course, my thompsons gotten so bad it will only burn the CD-RWs and wont even play game...and after the testing it actually stopped reading at all until I got a DVD cleaner lol. Anybody says any different from this may be deemed incorrect now, besides maybe stating the specific CDs that the Philips will burn from. "Sent in from Ace Sunstar" I have noticed on my xbox that the only cd-rs that seem to work is ones that have a coustom lable put on. I only have one cd-r like that but i guess it just makes the cd-r heavier or something. "Sent in from Randy Fray" Just thought I'd give you a heads up on this. I was also having problems getting my x-box to read cd-r's, so I tried using a cd-rw and it worked perfect. Haven't had a problem since I stared using rw's. "Sent in from B Mao" Q: If I copy songs into my Xbox, will that slow down my gaming? A: As far as I know, no. I myself have three full albums and my Xbox runs just fine. Copy as much CD's as you want, it won't slow down your gaming, but be careful, you might run out of space on your hard drive. But since the hard drive is so large, I doubt you have to worry about that! "Sent in from B Mao" Q: How come my Xbox does not play CD-R? Can you help me on this one? A: Well, I did explain this question above, but since I'm a nice guy, I'll say it again. Seems like a lot of people like to ask this question. See for yourself at EMSOX's Xbox FAQ (on GameFAQs, of course). The Xbox can't read CD-R's, however, you might have hope. "Sent in from Chris Spillins" Q: Do you know why there isn't a Gameshark out for the Xbox? I know they have that action replay and game save crap but after playing through games like Ninja Gaiden and Halo a multitude of times, I think it would be fun to go postal with some fun cheats. I appreciate any info you can provide. A: Hmm, this one's a toughie. Could be that Interact doesn't produce any more Gamesharks. Check back later. I'll do more research and try to get more info. "Sent in from ME" No, looks like Interact doesn't make anymore Gamesharks. Check the link below for something interesting... it has the Gameshark logo... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1066094570264&productCategoryId=cat08130&type=product "Sent in from MckellenGandalf" Hi just thought I would let the people reading your faq know this, that is if you wanna put it in. This is about the harddrive space. Apparently when the Xbox first came out they had a a lot of little harddrive from their old computers that never got used. So they took that opportunity to use them in the Xbox. But a few years into production they ran out of little ones (8GB: 300,000 blocks) so they had to start using bigger ones. If you have gotten your Xbox fairly recently (around the time Samsung DVD drives came out and Xbox Live was included) you will have an absolutely HUGE harddrive. So to all you lucky people out there already with the awesome Samsung drive you might also be blessed with a 20GB hardrive. If you do the math that's about 750,000 blocks. I have had mine for over a year and I have barely scratched 50,000 and I have over 40 games and tons on music, So If there's someone out there that does need that space, check out your Xbox stats! "Sent in from pimpin_8_eazy" Q: yo is there anyway u can copy Xbox video games onto the harddrive so u wont have to have the disk or will u have to copy the game to a cd-rw (which everyone says works on Xbox) and copy the cd-rw to the harddrive? i know u can buy a mod chip but im a lil scared cracking my Xbox open to install that...thanks for ur time man A: Seems like everyone today is talkin' about moddin' their Xbox. But alas, (to stay on topic), you cannot burn any games into your hard-drive without modding it. I don't support it either, so please look somewhere else for any help on modding your Xbox (if you want to). "Sent in from Adam Carroll" Q: Hiya Sorry if I missed this in your FAQ that you wrote for the Xbox. But I would like to know the weight and size (maybe) of the Xbox system. I'd like to know cause I'll be travelling plane-wise and would like to figure out if I can take it with me safely as I travel. A: Thanks for noticing and informing me about the Xbox dimensions not being in my FAQ. Have a cookie. Do not fear. The dimensions are up there ^^^ (he-he) VI. Extras --------- "Send in from ME" When you play music, press Y, then X. The sphere on the left side will take over the screen. You can see a cool screen while listening to your favorite songs. "Send in from CHEATAH2491" I have a secret for you to add. Put in an audio CD burn it and make a album name as <> the B has to be a character that looks like a b under the accents tab. A set of credits should appear. If not recheck the spelling of the album. VII. About the Author -------------------- This is my first FAQ. I am a big gamer, and I just recently joined GameFAQs. Gotta give credit to Jeff Veasey, or CJayC, the owner of GameFAQs. He made this possible. I love to play video games, and you'll find out more about this issue in the section below. I know a lot about them, too. I'm good at video games, and do have patience (as in I won't throw the controller at the screen even if I am severely tempted to). If you think I am biased, I'm not. I do own other systems other than Xbox, and I play all types of games (again, more about this below). If you want to find out my real name, send me an e-mail at the addresses all the way at the top of the FAQ. A. Complete Gaming History -------------------------- I know you don't want to read this. But if your bored, atleast this will cheer you up. Although I am not a hardcore gamer, I do play a lot of video games. I first experienced video games when my good ol' dad bought me SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). He bought me Super Mario: All Stars and Ultimate Mortal Kombat III to go with it. Ever since, I've been addicted. Along the way, I got a PlayStation, GameCube, and finally Xbox. I also have played Sega Genesis, GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advanced, GameBoy Advanced SP, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation 2. The only system I have never tried is DreamCast, and all those other old systems (NES, Sega Master System, Atari). So you see, I am not biased, I have tried almost all systems. I just like Xbox a lot. I also treasure my GameCube and PlayStation. My SNES doesn't work anymore so I can't say anything about that. :) So no offense. Have fun playing Xbox, GameCube, or PS2. ;) VIII. The End ------------ Well, this is the end (sniff). I am currently accepting e-mails to help out my FAQ. Thank you for your help. Thanks for reading this. Have fun. IX. And Last, But Not Least, The Credits ---------------------------------------- Gotta give props to all the people who help this FAQ: Amad300: Thanks for asking a question that I could add to this FAQ. EMSOX: (Even though you might not know it) Thanks for making an Xbox FAQ in the first place; I have been inspired by your works. I also used the method for CD-R's in your FAQ. Thanks. Lard Walson: Thanks for sending a word of appreciation (if that's what it was). You sure can summarize big things in two words. :) B Mao: Well, you added two new questions to the FAQ and gotta give ya credit. Thanks! Miles Varalli: I'm sorry if you're reading this FAQ, man, I forgot to add you to the Credits List! I feel so ashamed. :( But thanks anyway for the nice little info on the DVD thing. :) damian black: Yo, damian, thanks for the help. I felt a severe need to never update this FAQ when more and more people started to ask me the same question again and again. This should satisfy them. (No offense to those guys out there, just got a little angry, ya know.) :) Killa Kamillac: Yo Killa, thanks for the final word on the CD-R issue! Now, those people have something to look at! UndarkGoth: Thanks for the info on the CD-R issue. We have another great person here! Ravenspark: Thank you for all info! Very helpful, indeed. Jon Grandstaff: You, too! Thanks for the little tidbit there, helped solve some confusions. Chris Spillins: Thanks for the great question! It also added more info to the FAQ! Ace Sunstar: Thanks for the thoughtful info, there! MckellenGandalf: He gave us some interestin' info, I never knew my Xbox had more hard-drive space than my friend's computer! Randy Fray: Nice info, thanks for supporting me! pimpin_8_eazy: Thanks for the question, it really woke me up from my sleep. CHEATAH2491: Thanks for the secret, it refreshed that section. Adam Carroll: Again, here, have a cookie. Thanks for noticing my idiocy. Big things come in small packages. GAMEBOY advanced :) Why are you still here?!? Go outside! Get some friends! Then come back inside and play some more Super Smash Bros: Melee and HALO!
