TMC no longer maintains this db and it ceased answering requests a while back. Since that db was something I used quite a bit, I looked into reviving it and while WAIS Inc (now a TMC spinoff) has said that it may revive it, it may be while before it does, SOOooooo since I had a little extra disk space, I grabbed the available postings and waisindexed them. INFO-MAC is BACK! But in slightly different form, for reasons of reindexing. It is split into 2 dbs: info-mac - Volumes 10-12 (1992-1994) inclusive info-mac95 - Volume 13 (1995) The easy Web way (also gives you access to the comp.sys sgi, comp.os.linux, and rec.woodworking archives): http://hornet.mmg.uci.edu/~hjm/projects/sgi.wais.html The naked URLs: wais://ih34.hsis.uci.edu:210/info-mac?query boolean query ... and wais://ih34.hsis.uci.edu:210/info-mac95?query boolean query ... NB:If you use Netscape, you have to specify a WAIS proxy; you can use the same host (ih34.hsis.uci.edu, port 80), but note that the proxy jump is very slow - sometimes as long as minutes. I'm trying to modify it to use a local WAIS gateway, instead of jumping to CERN (the default). Mac Mosaic does not support WAIS queries directly yet. You can get free Mac WAIS clients from an info-mac mirror, of course: for example.. ftp://ftp.hawaii.edu//mirrors/info-mac/comm/tcp/wais-for-mac-12a.hqx ftp://ftp.hawaii.edu//mirrors/info-mac/comm/tcp/mac-wais-129.hqx or check out the WAIS freeware collection: ftp://ftp.wais.com/pub/freeware The bare WAIS src file for info-mac is: (:source :version 3 :ip-address "128.200.5.34" :ip-name "ih34.hsis.uci.edu" :tcp-port 210 :database-name "info-mac" :maintainer "mangalam@uci.edu" :description "Harry's test infomac server The info-mac digest from info-mac@sumex-aim.stanford.edu" ) Replace "info-mac" with "info-mac95" and you'll have the other. It is, of course, free, for the cost of bug reports and comments.
