Estimate of Chronically Hungry Passes 1B

A top UN official says the global economic crisis has pushed the number
of chronically hungry people past the one billion mark for the first
time. Food and Agriculture Organization head Jacques Diouf disclosed the
figure to the Financial Times. Last year the FAO estimated about 960
million people were chronically hungry worldwide.
