April 25, 2012 First U.S. Mad Cow Case in 6 Years Found in California ------------------------------------------------------- Federal officials say they have discovered the first new case of mad cow disease since 2006. An infection was found in a dairy cow in California, but the U.S Department of Agriculture says it has been contained and poses no threat to the nation's food supply. John Clifford, the department’s chief veterinary officer, made the announcement. John Clifford: "First off, this particular animal did not enter the food supply at any time so there's no concern about that. In addition, the safety of our food is addressed through our interlocking safeguards, through the removal of any kind of material that contains the BSE agent in the United States. Therefore, we continually protect public health through the removal of these materials." .
