Spain to Tackle Mortgage Reform Following Eviction-Related Suicides

In the Basque region of Spain, residents of the town of Barakaldo held a
vigil Friday to pay homage to a 53-year-old woman who jumped from a
balcony to her death as she was about to be evicted. The death of Amaia
Egana marked the second suicide in two weeks related to evictions in
Spain as a growing mass movement has put pressure on the authorities to
act. Spain’s government and opposition leaders were expected to meet
Monday to work on changes to the country’s mortgage laws, which
critics say favor banks and fail to cancel debt even after homes are
repossessed. Spain has seen a mounting economic crisis with unemployment
now exceeding 25 percent. A general strike in Spain has been called for
Wednesday.
