September 10, 2012 100 Killed in Iraq After Sentencing of Fugitive VP --------------------------------------------------- More than 100 people were killed in Iraq on Sunday in one of the country's deadliest days this year. A series of bombings hit Baghdad shortly after fugitive Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi was sentenced to death for allegedly planning and funding attacks. A leading Sunni Muslim politician, Hashemi fled Baghdad in December when Iraq’s Shia-led government accused him of running death squads. Hashemi has denied the charges, saying they are politically motivated. The controversy around Hashemi has sparked fears of worsening the sectarian turmoil between Shiites and Sunnis. In Sunday's worst attack, more than 50 people were killed when a bomb struck a crowded commercial area. .
