On June 12, 1963, Evers was assassinated in the driveway outside his home in Jackson. He had served as the NAACP's first field secretary in Mississippi, working to end segregation and racist violence. Among those attending Wednesday's events was Evers' widow, Myrlie Evers-Williams. .
