November 19, 2019 U.N. Condemns U.S. for World's Highest Rate of Children in Detention -------------------------------------------------------------------- The United Nations has condemned the United States for having the world's highest rate of children in detention. The U.N. experts particularly condemned the Trump administration's policy of forcibly separating children from their parents at the border and then detaining children away from their parents or family members. This is Manfred Nowak, who is leading the U.N. global study on children deprived of liberty. Manfred Nowak: "Of course, separating children, as was done by the Trump administration, from their parents - and even small children - at the Mexican-U.S. border is absolutely prohibited by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. I would call it inhuman treatment for both the parents and the children. And there are still quite a number of children that are separated from their parents and where neither the children know where their parents are nor the parents know where their children are." .
