The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Will Shorten Its Name

Rhode Island's governor has signed an executive order to shorten the
state's name on official documents from "The State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations" to just "The State of Rhode Island." State
Senator Harold Metts, who is African American, said he will also push to
officially change the state's name, too. Metts said, "The word
'plantations' conjures extremely painful images for many Rhode
Islanders."
