The Boeing 737 broke into three pieces on impact in a muddy field Wednesday, at least 500 meters short of its intended runway. There was no fire. Authorities described half of the injuries as severe. The cause of the crash has not been determined, but Turkish television said the aircraft may have run out of fuel. Turkish authorities said it is a miracle there were not more casualties. Four hours after the crash, emergency workers were still combing the wreckage. Weather forecasters said the plane, which departed Istanbul Wednesday morning, was attempting to land in light rain and fog. .
