In his weekly address Saturday, Mr. Obama said he is "certain" Sonia Sotomayor is the "right choice" for the country's highest court. He cited her extensive experience on the federal bench and her extraordinary journey to success after growing up the underprivileged child of Puerto Rican immigrants. Mr. Obama said critics of Sotomayor are trying to paint a distorted picture of her record, but he said he is confident such efforts will fail. If confirmed as expected, 54-year-old Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic on the high court and the third woman justice. Some Republicans have criticized comments Sotomayor has made as being sexist or racist, by! suggesting a Latina woman would reach better conclusions than a white male. President Obama nominated Sotomayor to replace Justice David Souter, who is retiring. The Democratic majority in the Senate is expected to be enough to ensure her confirmation.
