New Memos Show US Toned Down Benghazi Talking Points by VOA News Newly leaked memos from the Obama administration about last year's killing of the U.S. ambassador in Libya show they were edited to remove references about a possible al-Qaida link. Media outlets are reporting that e-mails between the State Department, White House and intelligence agencies went through multiple versions and extensive editing to create the so-called "talking point" memos that explained the attack. In one e-mail exchange, the State Department's top spokeswoman at the time, Victoria Nuland, objected to mentioning specific groups that might have been behind the attacks. She said the information could be abused by members of Congress to criticize the State Department for not paying attention to warnings about the groups. The White House said Friday's public disclosure of the e-mails is an attempt by Republicans to "politicize" the investigation into the attack in Benghazi, Libya. Spokesman Jay Carney said lawmakers have known about the e-mails since earlier in the year. The attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi last September killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/us-libya-memos-benghazi/1658966.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/us-libya-memos-benghazi/1658966.html
