                   Pakistan Expels New York Times Journalist

   The Pakistani government has expelled a New York Times reporter from
   the country.

   New York Times bureau chief Declan Walsh was expelled from the country
   on Friday, the eve of national elections to bring about the first
   successful change of civilian government in Pakistan's history.

   A two-sentence letter delivered to Walsh said he had to leave due to
   his "undesirable activities," without further explanation.

   The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on Pakistan's interim
   government to reverse the expulsion.  CPJ's Asia program coordinator
   Bob Dietz said the decision "shows just how much authorities fear
   independent media coverage."

   ''Pakistan is one of 64 countries that global watchdog Freedom House
   deemed "unfree" for journalists in its annual report on world press
   freedom earlier this month.

   CPJ says authorities in Pakistan have failed to prosecute a single
   suspect in the 23 journalist murders over the past decade.
