         Obama to Meet Treasury Department Officials about IRS Scrutiny

   U.S. President Barack Obama will meet with Treasury Department
   officials later today, after reviewing a government report that showed
   the Internal Revenue Service targeted conservative groups for extra
   scrutiny.

   Obama has called for those responsible for the IRS' actions to be held
   accountable.

   White House spokesman Jay Carney did not go into details on what kind
   of consequences the president would seek.

   But House Speaker John Boehner raised the possibility of jail time for
   IRS law violations.  The top Republican in Congress said Wednesday, "My
   question is not about who is going to have to resign, my question is
   who is going to jail over this scandal.

   Attorney General Eric Holder has ordered an FBI criminal investigation
   into the tax agency's activities.

   Two congressional committees have announced they will hold hearings
   about the IRS matter on Friday and next Wednesday.

   A report released Tuesday by the Treasury inspector general said
   Ineffective management allowed IRS agents to improperly target Tea
   Party groups for more than 18 months.  The report blames IRS
   supervisors in Washington who oversaw a group of specialists in
   Cincinnati that screened applications for tax exempt status.

   The report does not indicate Washington initiated the targeting of
   conservative groups, but says a top supervisor in Washington did not
   adequately supervise agents even after she learned they were acting
   improperly.

   The agency started targeting groups with ``Tea Party,'' `'Patriots'' or
   ``9/12 Project'' in their applications for tax exempt status in March
   2010, the inspector general's report said.
