               North Korea Launches Short-Range Missiles into Sea

   South Korea`s Defense Ministry says North Korea has fired three
   short-range missiles into the East Sea - also known as the Sea of Japan
   - apparently as part of a military drill.
   The ministry said it detected two launches Saturday morning, followed
   by another in the afternoon. Officials said the North`s intent was not
   clear.
   The North routinely launches such sort-range missiles in an effort to
   improve its arsenal.
   The firing of the missiles comes at a time of high tensions between the
   two Koreas.
