Official Says Treasury Department Had No Role in IRS Targeting by VOA News The Treasury Department's number-two official said his agency played no role in the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups. The U.S. tax collecting agency has revealed it subjected Tea Party and other conservative groups seeking non-profit status to extra scrutiny from 2010-2012. In a prepared statement to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin said he learned last year a Treasury inspector general was investigating the IRS targeting. He testified he told the inspector general to follow the facts wherever they lead and Treasury would stay out of the way. As he opened the hearing, Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said IRS officials who knew earlier about the targeting did not tell Congress about it. "Congress was misled. The American people were misled,'' he told lawmakers. Lawmakers are trying to learn whether the IRS targeting was politically motivated. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/official-treasury-department-had-no-r ole-in-irs-targeting/1666116.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/official-treasury-department-had-no-role-in-irs-targeting/1666116.html
