UN Chief Arrives in Goma After Renewed Fighting United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has arrived in the eastern Democratic Republic Congo, where renewed clashes between rebels and army troops broke out this week. Fighting ended just hours before Mr. Ban`s visit Thursday to the flashpoint city of Goma. The fighting marked the third straight day of clashes between the Congolese army and rebel group M23, following months of relative calm. There was no fighting reported in the area early Thursday. Mr. Ban arrived in the DRC capital, Kinshasa, on Wednesday, at the start of a three-day trip aimed at promoting peace and development in eastern Congo. His trip also includes stops in Rwanda and Uganda. Mr. Ban has called for faster deployment of a U.N. "intervention brigade" that is authorized to combat the many militia and rebel groups active in the eastern DRC. He also says the region needs to see more development before it can be stabilized. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim is traveling with Mr. Ban on his Great Lakes trip, as is the U.N. envoy to the region, Mary Robinson. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/un-chief-arrives-in-goma-after-renewe d-fighting/1666666.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/un-chief-arrives-in-goma-after-renewed-fighting/1666666.html
