Nile Dam Project Will Not Affect Neighbors, says Ethiopia by VOA News Ethiopia said its diversion of the main Nile River tributary will not impact other countries that depend on the river's water supply. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spoke Wednesday, a day after engineers began diverting the Blue Nile to allow construction of a nearly $5 billion hydroelectric dam. The ministry said the river will return to its natural course when construction is finished. Both Egypt and Sudan have expressed concern the dam will leave them without enough water to support their populations. Egypt's ambassador to Ethiopia, Mohammed Idriss, told VOA that any reduction will affect "the life of the Egyptian people." He also said Egypt is upset because the diversion came before the release of a tri-lateral report on the dam and its impact. The report is due to be released within the next two weeks. Egypt's official news agency said the cabinet met Wednesday to discuss Ethiopia's diversion of the Blue Nile. It said the construction measures "do not reflect any approval by Egypt to build the dam." Ethiopia's water minister, Alemayehu Tegenu, said that the construction of the dam is being done in a way to maintain "mutual benefit" among countries in the Nile basin. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/nile-dam-project-will-not-affect-neig hbors-says-ethiopia/1670696.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/nile-dam-project-will-not-affect-neighbors-says-ethiopia/1670696.html
