Ukraine Parliament Approves New PM by VOA News Ukraine's parliament has approved President Petro Poroshenko's nominee for prime minister, Volodymyr Groysman, after accepting Arseniy Yatsenyuk's resignation. Lawmakers voted on the new government Thursday. Groysman, a Poroshenko ally, had been the parliamentary speaker. The 41-year-old Yatsenyuk announced Sunday that he was quitting in a bid to end the country's political stalemate. The measure gives Ukraine a chance to adopt new electoral, constitutional and judicial reforms, and to move toward joining the European Union and NATO. Yatsenyuk's Cabinet survived a no confidence vote in February, but two parties left the governing coalition. He has been blamed for Ukraine's worsening economy and the slow pace of reforms. Analysts have expressed concern that the appointment of Groysman could result in Ukraine's political power being concentrated with President Poroshenko and his inner circle. If lawmakers had failed to approve the proposed new government, it could have resulted in early elections for both lawmakers and the president.
