Christmas in New York City Draws Tourists, Locals Alike

   NEW YORK --

   In the nation's largest city, the busy holiday season sees both locals
   and tourists out in droves. Whether it's shopping for last-minute gifts
   or simply enjoying the sights and sounds of the season, the hustle and
   bustle of New York City is seemingly endless.

   The air is brisk and chilly on a recent evening in New York City, but
   that did nothing to deter the crowds at Rockefeller Center. After all,
   there was a Christmas tree to see. The 28-meter-tall tree here is a
   famous symbol of the holiday season, and both locals and tourists had
   ventured out for it.

   "It's magical -- the lights, the tree, the people," said an elderly
   woman. "It's really magical."

   Capturing a "selfie" proved to be a popular, albeit tricky, activity
   given the crowds, but it was all part of the fun.

   "It's what makes New York New York," said a young woman. "It wouldn't
   be New York if it wasn't for the crowds."

   Whether a skating rink or ornate store window, the city provided
   numerous backdrops for photo opportunities ... and just as many options
   for those looking to do some shopping.

   "We started our shopping at Thanksgiving," said a man, "and we'll
   continue until, like, New Year."

   "Last minute's always my problem, added a young woman. "I'm always a
   last-minute shopper."

   Luckily in New York, there are plenty of vendors inside and outside ...
   but if you're looking for free entertainment, outside is the place to
   be for a performance by singers from the Salvation Army.

   Representatives of charities like the Salvation Army dot the city this
   time of year, and it's hard not to be moved by the generous spirit of
   the season.

   "New York is a wonderful expression of a big city," said a women.

   New York '¦ a big city with a big heart.
