At Least 2 Killed in Saudi Mosque Attack by VOA News At least two people were killed and seven were wounded when gunmen opened fire Friday on a Shi'ite mosque in eastern Saudi Arabia during weekly prayers. The attack struck the Imam Reza Mosque in the Mahasen area of Al-Ahsa city. The Saudi Interior Ministry said in a statement that one attacker detonated his explosives, while the other opened fire, the state-run Saudi Press Agency reported. One attacker was stopped from blowing himself up. Witnesses said security forces and ambulances quickly surrounded the mosque. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Mehasen is a neighborhood mostly populated by Shi'ite workers of the state-run Saudi Arabian Oil Company, the world's largest oil-producing firm. Shi'ites in Saudi Arabia make up some 10 to 15 percent of the Sunni-ruled kingdom's population. The Shi'ite minority has previously been targeted in attacks by Islamic State, which considers Shi'ites to be heretics. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/saudi-mosque/3167981.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/saudi-mosque/3167981.html
