Exiled Tibetans Voting for New Leaders by VOA News Tibetans living in exile are voting Sunday to choose new leadership as they struggle for autonomy for Chinese-ruled Tibet. Beijing does not recognize the government-in-exile, based in Dharamsala in the Indian Himalayan foothills. The election is the second since the popular and aging Dalai Lama stepped down from political leadership to focus on his role as Tibetan spiritual leader. The government-in-exile represents more than 100,000 Tibetans living mainly in India, Nepal and Bhutan. The Dalai Lama and many followers fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule. In Dharamsala, Tibetans lined up at a Buddhist temple and other locations to cast their votes Sunday. Voters in several other countries, including the United States, are also eligible to vote. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/tibetans-election/3246046.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/tibetans-election/3246046.html
