Turkish Journalists on Trial for Arms-Smuggling Story by VOA News Two journalists are on trial in Turkey Friday on allegations they revealed state secrets and aided a terrorist organization with their report on alleged arms smuggling to Syria. Can Dundar and Erdem Gul of Cumhuriyet newspaper could get sentences of life imprisonment if they are found guilty of the charges. They are accused of publishing images that date back to January 2014 of trucks bound for Syria the newspaper said proved Turkey was smuggling arms into Syria. Turkey says the reporters aided an Islamic movement headed by U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. Turkey has a poor human rights record and a history of pressing charges linked to the content of journalists' reports. Media freedom organizations have been pressing Ankara to drop the charges against Dundar and Gul. Dundar is editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet and Gul is head of the Ankara bureau. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/turkish-journalists-on-trial-for-arms -smuggling-story/3254445.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/turkish-journalists-on-trial-for-arms-smuggling-story/3254445.html
