                           US Soldier Killed in Iraq

   A U.S. serviceman has been killed in combat near the northern Iraqi
   city of Irbil, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Tuesday.

   Carter told reporters in Stuttgard that he had no further information
   at this time.

   A U.S. military official told U.S. news agencies that the soldier was
   killed while performing his duty as an adviser to Kurdish Peshmerga
   troops.

   The official also said the serviceman was killed by "direct fire" after
   Islamic State forces penetrated the Peshmerga front line.
