Brazil's President on Verge of Suspension by VOA News Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff could be only hours away from suspension from office as the country's Senate begins debate Wednesday morning on whether to put her on trial. The vote on suspending Rousseff and beginning an impeachment trial is expected late Wednesday night or early Thursday. Newspaper polls have indicated that 50 senators are expected to vote for a trial - many more than the majority needed. However, it is not clear that these senators would also vote to convict her. Rousseff is accused of manipulating funds to hide the state of the country's finances during her 2014 reelection campaign. She says her opponents, including Vice President Michel Temer who also is under investigation for corruption, are attempting a coup. The Rousseff impeachment proceedings were thrown into confusion Monday when the interim speaker of the lower house said last month's vote to send the matter to the Senate was invalid. He said Rousseff never had an opportunity to defend herself, making the impeachment vote illegitimate. However, he later reversed himself, and Senate leader Renan Calheiros said the debate and vote would go ahead Wednesday as scheduled. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/brazil-president-on-verge-of-suspensi on/3324661.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/brazil-president-on-verge-of-suspension/3324661.html
