Gunmen Attack Shi'ite Shrine in Kabul As Hundreds Gather for Religious Ceremony At least three gunmen in Afghan security forces uniforms stormed a Shi'ite shrine and opened fire in the capital Kabul Tuesday night. Hundreds were gathered there at the time for a religious ceremony. Witnesses claim to have heard an explosion as well. An eyewitness told Afghanistan's Tolo News TV channel that one attacker blew himself up while another was shot dead by the security forces. The third seems to be still holed up inside the shrine in the Kart e Sakhi area along with hostages. Reports on casualties are still sporadic. Several ambulances are outside the shrine to transport the wounded as soon as they can be evacuated. Tuesday was the ninth day of Moharram, the first month of Muslim calendar. Shiites around the world take part in processions and gather in large groups to mourn the killing of the grandson of the Muslim Prophet Mohammad on the 9th and 10th of this month. Security was tight in the city before the attack. The Afghan government had asked the Shiite community to not take out large processions on the roads but to gather inside their mosques or shrines for fear of an attack.
