"You get me?"

It's in this moment that Welch's perfect onomatopoeia eclipses whomever she may be. Her interior life, her desires, her fears, her being — it all fades away because she's produced such a rich and accurate sound effect for a specific kind of fellatio. Hailey Welch is no longer. Hawk Tuah Girl is born, and the people love Hawk Tuah Girl. From Hawk Tuah Girl, explained by straight dudes [Vox]

It was inexplicable for me. I mean, that's not ... how ... ? But it did make me a little homesick for Tennessee, where I spent a lot of time trying to get extremely drunk in the hopes of happiness.

One of those moments when pop culture feels like a random text generator.

I wish her a fun and profitable 15 minutes without regret or unpleasantness.

At the same time, this feels like something out of a recent William Gibson novel, like a synecdoche for pre-Jackpot cultural weirdness.

I unabashedly enjoy memes but I don't spend anywhere near enough time on the internet, tiktok, instagram and whatnot to be up to date on them. I like seeing MetaFilter have a meme that's close to current as an FP.

"Spit on that thang!" Yet another indication that porn always leads the internet to new places.

From the Vox article: social media clout grifters are attempting to turn Hawk Tuah Girl into a right-wing martyr.

Turns out she's not a Trumper. I wonder how quickly the bro-white-right will turn on her, and why they jumped so quickly to conclusions about her.

As a gay man, in general I feel like I don't understand straight people at all sometimes. But I like Hawk Tuah girl, I understand her. She is admitting giving blow jobs is fun. Of course it is, I think to myself. Giving blow jobs is fun, and, like she says, you do just kinda have to enjoy yourself and go for it. She says all this, when she says hawk tuah. I appreciate this candor, this honesty. The woman speaks the truth.

You have no idea how much this meme confused people who could speak Malay and Indonesian or aware of the maritime southeast asian cultures as it was bubbling up because it's just two letters away from a cultural historical/mythical figure. I guess like imagining if you were anglo and found out Albanians are making sex jokes about Merlin lol

I mean, anything Conor MacGregor finds interesting is probably shit.

I mean, people have been saying "hock tooey" or something similar, as a characterization of a spitting sound, as least since I was a kid, if not since the dawn of man. Not in this context perhaps, but good lord, they've written it up as if the sound itself is some kind of innovation.

Turns out she's not a Trumper.

One punishment for my sin of not abandoning twitter dot com is knowing even more about this than MetaFilter.

Laura Loomer lamented this and some ridiculous non-Tesla billionaire showed up to Well Actually she was just talking about who she'd blow, not who she'd vote for. (Though watching the Supreme Court it's understandable why one might assume the latter entailed the former.)

But I only mention this to quote two other comments I enjoyed:

having "fuck you money" means watching the hawk tuah girl's interview while you're on vacation and then coming to x dot com to correct a journalist's take on a clip from the interview

Revealed preferences of billionaires prove that poasting on X dot com is the most sublime terrestrial joy yet conceived by man. Despair not, anon, for even a pauper can sip of this sweet draught.

AliExpress is already selling hordes of bootleg Hawk Tuah T-shirts, some featuring her, some featuring just her mission statement. That's usually one of the major signs that this is not going to go quietly back into the box any time soon.

When I saw the clip, my first thought was of someone else -- Libby Hoeler.

Libby was a college student who was one of the first major victims of Internet revenge porn. Whether that was her real name, whether she cheated on her boyfriend or not, and other details are lost to history; what is known is that she recorded a series of short striptease videos for a young man, obviously intended for his eyes only, and they ended up on the Internet and widely distributed with her name emblazoned prominently on them.

She had no intentions of becoming a household name amongst the young males of the world; there is no reason why I or anyone else should know her name in that context. But for daring to be a young woman who expressed sexual desire, she'll spend the rest of her life with her name associated with that.

If this young woman is comfortable with her 15 minutes and can at least make a quick buck from it, good for her. But at least at the time, she didn't ask for this.

Never heard of this woman or her onomatopoeic fame. But I have to say that, while she was likely exaggerating for effect, the notion of someone, basically, hocking up an oyster (or a "loogie," as we used to say) during fellatio is super not-arousing. Using saliva, yes. Even enthusiastically and noisily applied. But not the back-of-the-throat garbage collection that "hawk tuah" implies. Bleh.
