Tuesday, December 20th, 2022 Some POWER too ============== Jirka illustrated in his phlog post [1] that he has no problems torturing his POWER9 desktop to the max from time to time. Well, I made it look like mine has been doing nothing in my last post [2], but that isn't entirely true. My machine has twice the computing power of his, as it has an 8C/32T CPU and 64 GB of RAM. Even when I installed four systems in QEMU-KVM virtualization in parallel [3] or ran five different systems emulated [4], it was barely visible in the CPU load meter. But then I edited videos in kdenlive, rendered the result to H265, turned on the parallel processing, and voila! full load the whole night. I even had to manually turn on fans on the case that are off most of the time because powertop reported a consumption of 496 W and the CPU soon reached 70 degrees centigrade. I just don't do stuff like this very often. If I did, I'd consider buying some generic PC box for it, because my POWER9 darling is too precious to be bothered by such things.
